I remember hearing of this restaurant back when we had cable and Anthony Bourdain was alive and well. So glad that I finally made it to LDN and had a chance to venture and try this, even if it wasn’t the original restaurant. It was just as good, though! Interesting menu - if I had to do it over again I wouldn’t be so adventurous. With this menu it was easy. We had fried pig’s tail - def what it is - a decadent fried pig tail. And some standard English fare like this lamb roast that was excellent. I would come here just for their excellent wine selection and bar service. I had the best martini I had during my entire stay in London and another great cocktail - the owner’s version of an Negroni. Can’t remember the name but it was clever and cute. Ended with gooseberry fool - I feel like you only hear of it in books. 🤓

I just love St. John's, the food is exquisite and the staff is simply delightful. I had the Lamb's heart with radicchio and anchovy as a starter,it was tender, juicy and well-balanced. Beautiful flavours! As a main, I had the grey mullet with leeks and saffron, the fish was perfectly seasoned and the leeks were perfection. I was quite full already but I still had the blood orange and almond cake for dessert. I typically go for the double baked chocolate cake or the to die for Madeleines but the almond cake didn't disappoint. The service was top notch and as delightful as ever! I'll be back for more. Thanks! 🙏

Visited as part of a large party and ordered the feasting menu. The food was all excellent, particularly their signature bone marrow which was incredibly tasty. The fish (and everything else) was also very good. Nice atmosphere and pretty busy, even on a Tuesday evening in September. Would definitely visit again.

I was told by many people that this was one of their favourite restaurants in London, but I was quite disappointed with the food. The service was great, and the wine was great! However, none of the dishes we ordered stood out, and for the bill to round up to £90 for a mediocre meal was a bit disappointing. Hopefully the dishes can improve because the restaurant itself has a nice ambience.

Don’t come here expecting beautiful food… it’s quite rustic and simply plated, and in fact it was impossibly hard to take nice photos, but the food is delicious. Amazing toasts with chicken liver, and we snagged a specials of the day which was sea whelks with the most delicious herb garlic butter sauce. Found the mains to be a bit of a letdown though the little gems salad is amazing, but had the best bread and butter pudding to finish the meal perfectly. It’s served with clotted cream and a lovely caramel sauce.

Very good restaurant opposite Spitalfields Market about 5 minutes walk from Shoreditch High Street Underground Station. One of the three restaurants operated by legendary chef Fergus Henderson of nose to tail eating fame. We have eaten at Bread and Wine many times over the years and it has always been very good. Most recently we had lunch there and enjoyed it very much. We had a squid dish, a bowl of mussels, a crispy pig's skin salad and Eton mess. All were very good although to my partner's taste the mess would have had less whipped cream! The food was accompanied by a couple of glasses from the excellent French wine list. Very friendly and helpful staff. And good value for money.

This is the type of place you will either love or hate; it’s quite peculiar. First of all please note St Johns has a few restaurants across London including its famous Michelin starred restaurant in Farringdon. Also this NOT a place for vegans. FOOD The lady said it was meant to share and 4-5 plates with a mix of small and big plates would do it. We didn’t understand a single dish in the small plates so went straight for large plates. We took the 3 most expensive which includes the venison, the hake and the partridge. The hake was the outstanding dish I would happily eat again but the partridge disgusted us a little especially when the waitress said it may contain traces of bullets from when the bird got shot. Talking about disgusting, we saw TWICE a man pass by the middle of the restaurant with a dead skinned pig on his back, not even sure this is legal to do. We also had a Welsh Rarebit which was the best thing ever but very small portion for 10£. Overall the dishes were super small and very expensive for the simplicity of the serving. Finally we had madeleines for takeaway as it seemed to be a thing here. Honestly they were good but wouldn’t rave about them. Paid £100 for two with no drinks. STAFF/SERVICE This is the part where I got annoyed. They kept trying to upsell us but then when it came to basics, they were absent: -forgot to bring extra bread which they even offered to me -forgot to refill our water jug -forgot to place the madeleine order which take 15min to make (despite me mentioning them when ordering twice) -we were served one dish after the other all spaced about 10min from each other for some reason even though the group table next to us was getting speedy service ATMOSPHERE/LOCATION Just opposite Spitafields market, prime location. Atmosphere is a bit like in an old school tavern; small basic tables, basic chairs, basic cutlery, basic dishes but food not served quickly unlike in a tavern. Also the personal space was ridiculous, i was sat 10cm away from the next couple next to us and staff constantly passing behind me. CONCLUSION: although some dishes were good, I was overall pretty disappointed in the experience and would not go back.

Restaurant menu changes all the time so there’s no way to know whether the food will be good when you make a booking weeks in advance Menu had mostly kidneys and blood pudding and liver Ran out of pork at 7.30 and they substituted with lamb Cooking time was a bit long, about 45 mins Madeleines were good and fresh

We had a fantastic time! We stopped in to share a few plates. We had the pigeon, Welsh rarebit, grilled sardines, flowering broccoli with sheep's curd, and crispy pig bits. The service and food were top-notch.

We had a fantastic evening there with a lot of tasty food and drinks. Thanks a lot to the whole team. Wonderful restaurant and team. Since 20 years it’s open. Highly recommend it.

Nice meal at st Johns bread and wine. Stand out dish was probably the butternut squash. Had high hopes and left feeling like the meal overall was nice but not stand out...

No one can do what St. JOHN does as consistently well as JOHN does it. Everything is delicious, no matter what you choose. Make sure to make a reservation! It is priceless to have a place you can come back to in a beloved city that upholds the same high quality time and time again. It was a pleasure to bring my partner for his first time. We promised to come back before we leave for home. The chicken liver with brandied prune was my favorite. Our other small pick Smoked Cod's Roe, Egg and Cress was knockout. For large plates we dabbled with a vegetarian option. I was nervous as I ordered the Roast Squash, Sheep's Curd and Watercress, but “Wow!” This dish was perfect and satisfying. The duck leg was awesome! Less chive with the aioli might have been better, but a bold choice none the less. A note on beverages, the sidecar was amazing and perfectly balanced. Can’t wait to return many more times!

The St John brand doesn’t really need any new endorsements. It’s one of the most iconic restaurant groups in London. This was my first visit to any of their establishments, and I had high expectations . I started with the smoked eel with pickled cucumber. Probably my favourite dish of the evening. The mutton with chard and anchovy was a bit of a mixed bag- the mutton was delicious but IMO the accompaniments didn’t go very well with the meat. Dessert was bread and butter pudding, oldie but goldie. They have an interesting selection of cocktails and wines too. I tried the Fergroni, but tbh it wasn’t anything special. I did like the other wines by the glass. Servers were all lovely and helpful. Overall verdict: good but I wasn’t blown away.

Great food and excellent service. That squash dish is the best squash I’ve had. Very underrated dish but absolutely outstanding! Highly recommended!

We were 4 people sharing 4-5 starters and 4 mains and everything was delicious. From the starters, our highlights were the roast bone marrow and parsley salad and the smoked cod’s roe, egg & cress. These two were some of the most delicious things I’ve eaten in 2022 :) we also had the dexter mince as a main - it came with some type of horseradish sauce/pairing and it was delightful. Can’t wait to return and try out whatever new menu they have on that day!

Very simple yet very good British food restaurant. Restaurant itself is also very simple and rustic too. This is second location of St John I’ve visited and neither of them didn’t disappoint me. Its a place to share so good for date, group, friend and all occasions.

Great meal. Highlight for me was the smoked Cod's roe with egg. Salt Hake with baby gem also delicious. Great choice of wines by the glass. Buttermilk Pudding was my favourite pudding (we worked through four of them), make sure you get some freshly baked madelines too

Great food! Super lunch. We had a selection of 5 dishes and a dessert to share; possibly 4 would have been sufficient. The saddle of Rabbit and Ox Tongue were standout alongside the other wonderful dishes. The wine list matches the food in style with great pairing recommendations. The no-nonsense decoration somehow reinforces the importance of the food. You see the chefs in the kitchen calmly serving up divine dishes. The serving staff are knowledgeable and fun. There is good wheelchair access and space. Recommended.

Went in with high expectations but left a bit disappointed. We were a group of four and ordered a few different dishes to try many things. The appetizers were good, but nothing spectacular - we tried the hard boiled eggs, which were too simplistic, gladly they had a small piece of anchovy to add any taste to the dish. We also tried the smoked mackerel toast, which was good. I didn’t try the chicken liver toast but my friends liked it. The big issue, which brought my rating down a lot were the main dishes. We had the duck (more like rubber duck) and the dexter (very hard and a bit cold). We also had the fish with chorizo - a weird mix that was surprisingly good. We also tried some side dishes that were good, like the welsh rarebit. Overall the service was great, the prices were high and the food was subpar.

A restaurant full of London atmosphere. The food was interesting, but not for everyone who maybe doesn't like meat that much. The waiter is a gentleman who looks a lot like the footballer Ronaldo. Take a photo with him at the end.

Went to this branch if St. John twice recently, the food quality is always pleasing. One time my friend is a pescatarian, so we ordered a lot of veg dishes and the smoked cod roe. But the waiter didn’t take the order so I went back a second time to enjoy it. Eventhough we had all veg dishes and I’m not a vegetarian, it didn’t feel like something was missing. All dishes re very flavorful. Try the Welsh Rarebit - it’s a refined cheese on toast and surprisingly good and unique.

3.5/5 Pricey wine bar and dinner dining experience. I tried a couple small plates which were okay but not overly remarkable given the price. A bit too basic frankly. What did capture my attention was the fantastic butterscotch bread and butter pudding with clotted cream. Fantastic! So good I ordered two. Contrast of the darkly sweet butterscotch neutralized by the non-sweet clotted cream works well. I know they’re also known for their donuts which sadly I didn’t try but it’s clear they’re a real winner with sweet stuff.

Went twice in one week - menu had almost completely changed, which means the produce is absolutely fresh. My friend has been dreaming of the salt cod roe for the entire week, the bread is obviously fantastic, the venison was perfect (especially with a very well chosen red). The desserts are divine - we came after dinner on Friday night and got glasses of heavenly dessert wines to go with our date loaf (delectable) and apple crumble (surprisingly sharp). I would not regret coming back a third time in one week. Service is welcoming and knowledgeable. Decor is sleek and clean and minimalist. Great location.

Classic British Food While most people think of fish and chips when thinking of British food, it encompasses many more dishes of both baked, cured, and oven-varieties St. John’s Restaurant is often recommended as representing traditional British fare and their convenient Bread and Wine location at Spitalfields Market is an easy stop after browsing all the great market goods The menu changes daily and we sampled a variety of classics from braised beef and mash to a welsh rarebit and several types of cured fish The prep here is top notch and the flavors are more diverse than the bland British food you might find at a tourist stop: worth a stop to sample real British fare 📷 Smoked Cod’s Roe, Egg, and Cress £10.80 / Anchovy, Boiled Egg and Mayonnaise £11.10 / Welsh Rarebit (hot cheese sauce over toasted bread) £9 / Smoked Mackerel and Pickled Cucumber £10.10 / Braised Beef and Mash £22.90 / Greens (Cabbage with salt and oil) £5.60 / Bloody Mary £8.50 / Bread and Butter 📍St. John Bread and Wine (London, United Kingdom)

OMG. What a fantastic lunch! Everything on the menu was so flavourful. The grilled lambs offal and the cuttlefish were the two dishes that just edged it over a completely outstanding series of plates.

Love the service, adore the food and the simplicity of presentation. It's a small but comprehensive list of beverages. I miss these kinds of places, time seems to have stopped, it in truth seems like it is fast-forwarding to a future where origin and quality matters more than easy access and readymade.
