The mixed reviews sort of make sense but we loved it. Don’t go in there expecting super attentive service or gourmet food but you get an authentic experience - loads of great dishes, pretty good prices, and a bustling vibe. Definitely will be back! Cash only though

Was once famous for its bad service but now changed. Waiters are polite and patient. Decor is still in its 80s and comfortable. Went in around 9pm after a day of pub crawling with friends. Cheap and filling dishes. Average £9 a dish. Fast and efficient service. Not your 5 star but good enough. Great atmosphere with locals and tourists. Cash only

Haven't been to Wong Kei for many years and the food was as good I remember although the waiters are no longer as hilariously abrupt (or even rude) as previously...I almost miss it. Anyway, we had a chicken sweetcorn soup, sweet and sour chicken with rice and if memory serves, beef in oyster sauce on rice. All dishes were very well cooked, delicious and arrived promptly. Although prices have increased since my last visit I did not feel hard done by and they were reasonable considering the portion size. The only thing missing was the entertaining rudeness of the waiters who seem to have moved up market probably losing some of the WK uniqueness in the process. But most people would probably prefer less abrupt serving staff. I can wholeheartedly recommend based on quality of the food, it's taste and the price. Decor is a little bland although this time we were seated downstairs. Free pots of green tea are always served and if you wish for another pot, just lift the lid and it will be swiftly replenished. Overall, highly recommended.

So so so great food! We usually don’t eat Chinese food when traveling since we live in Taiwan. But my husband took me here because he had Chinese food for the first time here many many years back. All the dishes that we ordered were all very tasty and packed with flavor. We really loved their Singaporean fried rice noodles that we dined here twice while we were in London! Great portion and reasonable price which was a big bonus. People complained that staffs are rude but it’s actually part of their trademark. It’d be odd if they’re being polite! They only take cash payments so prepare ahead but you won’t be disappointed with the food.

Pretty garbage food. Not even cheap and service was bad not sure why there are so many people who go here to try. Everything tasted so bad. Very not recommended and would never step back again. Service bad, place was not clean and everything was just really bad. Not even recommended to try not worth your time.

lovely wong kei ❤️ from my childhood coming here after chinese school on sundays ❤️ I usually go for, beef brisket with rice noodles in soup, freddie had beef brisket with egg noodles in soup, and we shared some wontons ❤️ if you are in a hurry go for noodle soups because they cook them on the ground floor and the masters are so quick at dishing it up —heaven for £6.90 for dinner~ sweet and sour chicken on rice (my new obsession from last year I never ate this dish growing up but i love it so much now) and freddie had stuffed pepper (w minced prawn), bean curd and stuffed aubergine in black bean sauce on boiled rice 🍚 no.165 other things to try: roast duck with ho fun in soup ‘hot pot’ (which is clay pot) wind dried sausage on rice (with salt egg and salted fish if they have it) dry fried beef ho fun roast duck/ any of the barbecue meats on rice wonton noodle soup morning glory with preserved bean curd (so special and delicious) 🍚lovely hakka dishes and cantonese dishes ❤️ i think the sliced fish with bean curd on rice sounds good and the salted egg and sliced pork vegetable soup for 2 will be amazing monks vegetables always yum pork chops eel with bitter melon… very headsy choice ❤️love you wong kei thank you for (mostly) always letting me sit on the ground floor 🥰 also, look at the line outside ! ❤️

It’s authentic Cantonese food spot, the stirred fried beef noodles is one of the best I’ve had in years, so nice and strong flavor of wok stirred fried scent. Enjoyed the crispy pork belly also. I took down 2 stars, as they become very rude to me when they realized that I didn’t have cash. As a hungry traveler just arrived in the UK, I was focused on looking for the food that I wanted to eat; honestly I didn’t see cash only, neither any of the servers told me about it. And I can’t believe that after the covid, there’s a restaurant that doesn’t offer credit card service and got mad at their customer that visited from far. It left a bad taste on the experience.

Upstairs, downstairs!!!!!! I have been a returning customer for a long time. I had the won ton ho fun, and they always provide free tea. The food is really good, the prices went up a bit but it is still cheap and cheerful. I don’t expect any service in this restaurant, they are just there to guide you to the table (upstairs/downstairs), take orders, dish out and take your plates back (my plate was taken within 2 minutes and the bill came, they are too efficient 😂.) It is a quick turnaround for them, so the next customer comes in. Just remember to bring cash and they don’t add service charge in the bill.

I love chinese food. I remember coming here 20 years ago when the restaurant was known for its bad service. Today's food really was bad. I left it all and paid the bill and walled out. I feel yuk inside. The crispy noodles were bad The rice was fine bit nothing special The crispy Duck was yuk. You couldn't actually eat any of the crispy bits because they were top hard The plum sauce had some weird aniseed flavour in it. The aubergine dish was bad. Oh and eating on plastic.plates! . Wasn't a good experience. I won't be returning.

As wonderful as usual. Less surly and rude than the 80s but still a London institution. Still cash-only with table sharing and amusingly indifferent staff. Reassuringly a good percentage of Asian customers getting a reminder of home, and a great range of options. Perhaps not a place for a first date, but despite living overseas now I always try and pop in when passing through London.

I have been a loyal customer at this establishment for more than 25 years. While the food, particularly the duck noodle soup, is delightful and highly recommended, the customer service leaves much to be desired. Unfortunately, rudeness and poor service have been ongoing issues, despite the recent addition of a seemingly friendlier manager. Although there have been slight improvements, the overall customer service experience has not seen significant progress. Nonetheless, the delicious food continues to bring me and my family back time and again.

Tummies filled with 2 plates of freshly cooked healthy food for £19.80 did not disappoint as always. Service has mellowed over the years. My first experience was going back 40 years ago.

A very good experience. Food taste great, service was quick, staff were accommodating. Only downside, is they asked to pay with cash. But definitely recommend if you want good authentic Chinese food.

I guess I was expecting to more Taiwanese or Cantonese flavor so I was a little bit disappointed. The Aromatic Duck was a little bit too dry but a quarter of a duck for 3.5 pounds is really a good deal. The Hot and Sour Soup was good with various ingredients in it and had many surprises when finding them out, but once again it was not the same taste as those in my memories. The Stewed Oysters had big a mount of green onions and made the sauce taste good although I didn’t quite enjoy the texture of the oysters. (FYI, 生蠔 should mean you cook them when they are raw and alive and that was not the way they tasted like😂.) BTW, if you come alone, you might need to expect they put other customers at your table.

The duck was utterly disgusting , and the picture on the menu didn’t say wether it was cold or hot which they need to change so that customers know it will be cold rather than finding it on the menu. Before customers come in they should tell them that it’s cash only not when they have there food in front of him. But overall , the other food that was ordered was delicious but I would never come back here at all

Salt and pepper tofu was horrible. Eggplant hot pot was too salty, and two chunky pieces were not cooked properly. The Hakka pork belly was too salty too. The waiter said we could not order any tab water because tea was already served at our table. We could only have one or the other. This place is cash only.

Excellent as always. One of the few places in Soho that you can arrive with a large group 10+ people (without booking) and not have to queue to get a table. Ignore the decor, the food is freshly cooked to order and authentic. Important to note that it's CASH ONLY!

Watched a youtube vlog about this place and decided we should try this place out. Ordered the Beef brisket noodle soup, Barbecue pork noodle soup and the Fish ball soup plus the Braised Pork Belly with vegetables and rice (this tasted very much with Sesame oil and was not spicy -- Braised Pork Belly was super soft) All i can say is AMAZING great portions, with the meat overflowing. The beef brisket was tender and tasty. I loved the Bbq Pork as it was thinly sliced ( in a good way) and seasoned well. The broth to the noodle soup was almost a bit salty for me but overall the noodle portions were huge. Complimentary Asian tea i dont know what it is --was a plus on this food journey :) All noodle dishes are now at £7.20 each (yep, its prices went up) Overall, paid £32.30 which was good value for money for 4 people dining.Bring cash for payment.

Have been visited this place often in the past particularly for the excellent duck noodle soup as it's tasty and cheap but it was not the same taste as those in our memories. The service was fast and the staff weren't yelling or anything. They're famous for their wonky rudeness but I see they improve a little bit. Cash only.

The best and authentic Hong Kong restaurant in London. Food is AMAZING and very reasonably priced. The duck noodle soup is very good, if you like Chinese egg noodle you have to try it. Looking forward trying all the siu mei(燒味) next time, the roast duck is very very nice. I think the restaurant offers a very complete Hong Kong style food you can get and I can't wait to try them all. I can see many comments about their service, I think the staff are just doing their job, I don't feel they are rude or impolite.

Been hearing about this legendary place for a while. I had prepared myself for the infamous service (I thought it was a chinese version of Karen's Diner 😅) which later would be redeemed by authentic chinese dishes. But everything turned out good. Service was not the best, but more than tolerable. Dishes were all good that I came for two days in a row. I ordered mapo tofu and boiled rice during my first visit and beef brisket on boiled rice and hot & sour soup during my second one. My husband ordered cold BBQ pork, crispy belly pork, and roasted duck on boiled rice. Please do try their chili oil. It's THE BEST. Overall, good experience. Good food.

Again, not my first time here but definitely the first in 5 years. Seems like they renovated and the red carpeted floor is gone. Bustling as ever and authentic Chinese food at an affordable price. No cards accepted. Make sure you have cash with you and be prepared to Q.

I came here for the first time after being recommended. Although I've seen several reviews about rudeness (seeing that they're known for this), in my experience, they were pretty decent, and the service wasn't bad at all. (They weren't extra friendly, but they also weren't rude; the server we had just didn't speak much). The food was also tasty, and I highly recommend the duck starter; it was delicious. The food came out quite fast as well. The bathroom also wasn't dirty, which was a plus. All in all, everyone enjoyed their meal.

Food is Excellent, service is much better and no sharing tables anymore. Can't miss or go wrong with chicken is Sweetcorn Soup, Wonton Noodle Soup, Kingdo Spare Ribs & Triple Meat on Hot Rice. Plain Friend noodles is a must. Chilly Oil is 👌 Green Tea is complimentary as much as you want. They just need ventilation, no fans or air conditioning.

Service is there to serve not to entertain, yet because of that rather "interesting" attitude this institution has some of the most fun atmosphere in China Town, food is authentic Chinese, solo dinning is an epic experienced, you stand in the doors they ask "how many" you say "one" they point at the chair, say "sit", if they know you "what you want" if not, you get the menu thrown at you, awesome. Also you get to sit next to and opposite random strangers. I met hundreds of incredibly interesting people's out there. Enjoy.

we ordered the hot & sour soup, special fried rice, sweet & sour pork, pork slice in chili (something…) sauce. came in from the airport so we were very hungry and so happy that the food was on point! service was to the point and the food came out within 10 minutes i kid you not. like they knew we were starving haha. so everything was great. don’t forget to add their superb chili oil to spice up ur taste buds. would definitely come back!

Wong Kei, I have been going here since over 18 years now. It certainly has mellowed down from the “ rude” label. The food is the same, good portions, quick bite if in town and you need something filling and substantial. The roast pork and duck hot rice was good. Not much roast pork on the plate, but the duck was really good, it suprised me. For the section it caters for it’s a 4 star, for my overall liking it’s a 3 star. The prices are great and what you would expect. No gimmicks, tea was Luke warm, which wasn’t a great thing. Cleanliness great and staff, what one would expect. They do their job. But would I go here again? Most likely yes, to satisfy my hunger.

Just solid food with great tastes and ni fuss! Has the capacity to cater for larger groups upstairs. Service is much 'nicer' than the old days, but you'll struggle for a smile!

In the early 2000's when I came as a student, Wong Kei was known for good, cheap food although horrifically rude service (they wore this latter as a badge of honour). Today, they are just rude and their food is offensively terrible. My spicy eggplant was just overcooked slop and they didn't use the purple Asian eggplant, if you come on your own, they force you to sit downstairs, bark at you in barely understandable English. Others must agree since it used to be always crowded, no longer. DO NOT GO!

I've ordered a food and they brought everything together, I didn't think everything will be served together. I started my soup and main dish was already cold. I've ordered a sea food noodles but there wasn't any seafood inside maybe 3 shrimps. The food was cold and very oily. What was very strange for me??? When I ordered I had to paid straight away not after ... It wasn't good ....
