The Old Royal Naval College is Sir Christopher Wren's riverside masterpiece and one of London's most popular attractions. Nice area to walk around - short distance from the town centre and market. Plenty traditional pubs also in walking distance. The area is perfect to visit with kids and have great connection to the city centre via the Thames Clippers.

Built by Sir Christopher Wren these Grand Baroque buildings were once home to injured and retired sailors. The Center Piece is of course the magnificent "Painted Hall" whose murals were created by Sir James Thornhill between 1707 and 1726. There is a multimedia guide with headset included in the ticket price as well as a free 45 minute tour of the site which leaves from the Visitor Centre. I recommend this tour as you get to see things like the Skittle Alley built in the 1860s for the Pensioners and also gain an understanding of the history of changing use of the site through the centuries. One of the buildings is now used as a Music/Dance Academy and as you walk towards the Painted Hall you hear a veritable mixture of sounds from different musicians practising. The whole site is great to visit on a sunny day and why not finish your visit with a trip back down the river on the Ferry to Westminster Bridge.

This is indeed the sistine chapel of London. The painted halls are simply breathtaking. It's absolutely amazing! The audio tour is wonderful and 'would actually encourage you to take your time and go through it. Having said that, the tour conducted by the volunteers is unbelievable and so interesting. You can also convert your tickets into yearly membership.. so the subsequent visits are free for next year. Highly, highly recommended !!!!!

I love Thor!! 😆 Historical landmark to visit for a day trip. Amazing building structures, place is clean and not much people when we came around 4pm. A quiet place to stay as well if you want to get away from the busy city for a short while 🙂🙂

The Old Royal Naval College grew up on the site of the Tudor Palace in Greenwich, where Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were born. William and Mary commissioned Sir Christopher Wren to design the present buildings in 1695 to house naval pensioners, and these became the Royal Naval College in 1873. The Painted Hall, decorated by Sir James Thornhill, and the Chapel are especially worth visiting as are the beautiful grounds.

The whole complex is not only Grade 1 listed but UNESCO world heritage site including the Greenwich Park. Back in the day when Britannia ruled the waves, it's been associated with all kind of naval related activities due to River Thames water way to London. But the Old Navy College started its life as a royal palace where the notorious King Henry was born. It later became a hospital for all the seamen who returned and docked here from their explorations exhausted and sick. Then Royal Navy got rid off all the ex seamen pensioners, converted it to a college and taught here till 1998. And since then it's been doing regular rounds in movies and stuff.

I specifically went to see the painted hall which, I believe, took 19 years to complete. I was not disappointed as it is stunningly beautiful. I do like the way the seats in the middle are designed to enable you to lie down and study the ceiling. Another modern touch is the tables with mirrors. One in particular gave the illusion you were looking down into a depth and not just seeing a reflection. After I looked at one of the photos I took from the boat approaching Greenwich, I thought how much it reminded me of Venice.

Spent a day around Greenwich last weekend and the painted hall at the Old Royal Naval College is a must if visiting London. I understand that the first Sunday of the month tickets are only £5 but I would suggest checking their website first. Amazing place.

Fantastic experience. Exhibition, plus the Painted Hall (if you like paintings, if you like the Sistine Chapel, you will love it - although it's not for free, it's 13 € but there are free tours). Great picture opportunities outside.

An ode to symmetry! Christopher Wren turned a disused castle into an iconic building, an ode to symmetry. From place of hospitality and hospital, to naval college, university to conservatory and dance training, the Old Royal Naval College may have had various functions, but the beauty of the building has been preserved. Wren's achievement has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Not to be missed when visiting Greenwich!

I'm a wedding photographer lucky enough to work here on a regular basis. When it comes to prestigious wedding venues, this is your Louis Vuitton, your Rolls Royce, your luxury, high end choice. Built by Sir Christopher Wren, who knew a bit about architecture, in the late 1600's, it's breathtaking from every angle. In terms of running on the day, the team are as epic as the building they work in. There are lots of options on the day in terms of venue space, from The Admiral's House to The Painted Hall, there's even a stunning Chapel on site. Should you choose to, you can even arrive by boat! Of course, anything this high end comes at a price and I'm not going to pretend it's cheap, but if you have the budget there really is nowhere else like it.

I've only visited Old Royal Naval College once, but it feels like I have been there 1000 times because ever since that visit, I am constantly reminded of it by the countless movies and TV shows that use the site as a location. Its versatile beauty and timeless appeal make it appropriate for modern and historic representations alike. I visited while the painted hall was covered with scaffolding during restoration. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to tour the conservation and see the ceiling up close. It was astounding. I look forward to my next visit so that I can see it from the floor, as intended.

Will I Am with the Black Eyed Peas in concert in the grounds of the Old Navy College 07. July 2023. Beautiful setting in the heart of Greenwich with all the history of a maritime passed. Hot summer evening. An original setting for a concert, I didn't even know this space was used for such events. Great summer vibe.

During the two decades from its commission 1707 until completion in 1726, the artist had to navigate political events and rethink the design several times. That the end product flows so seamlessly is testament to his great skill as a grand-scale historical painter. Preparatory sketches (today held in a number of London galleries and museums) reveal how James Thornhill evolved the content over time.

We visited the College as a late visit during the local festival. The Painted Hall was really breathtakingly and the amount of details is amazing. The chance to observe it with less crowd and with a cocktail was unique and gave us the chance to savour it. Outside the Borealis Installation by Dan Archer. It was mesmerising. Both the visuals and the music made an incredible installation. Never would have thought to see London like that. Nevertheless the Old Royal Naval College deserves a visit for sure!

This place includes a chapel you can visit (only open to worshipers on Sunday's) and the spectacular painted hall. If you visit on the first Sunday of the month, painted hall tickets are reduced to £5 for a single visit (the regular price is currently £12.50 - but you can use that for unlimited visits for a year).

The Painted Hall was one of the best places that we visited in London. The whole Old Royal Naval College is a really lovely location to walk around, and The Painted Hall itself was stunning. A great cafe and gift shop there too. The staff were very friendly, and we loved that the place wasn't crowded at all - a refreshing change to the other overcrowded tourist areas we had visited!

Absolutely stunning place to visit. The wall paintings of this room are absolutely stunning, totally worth a visit. Do get the audio guide, so you can listen to the whole history of this room and its origin. The ticket is affordable, so I would 100% recommend. Also the view from this is ever so beautiful and you can see the London skyline. There are a couple of restaurants nearby for food/drink. And parking is available either in the streets nearby or the designated car parks around.

What a treat! The painted ceiling is stunning. Definitely take a tour to understand the history of the college and the symbolism and artistry behind the ceiling. Be prepared to get neck strain from looking up! The room to the rear of the hall is also magical. Generally, Greenwich is a lovely part of London. The undercover market, walk up the hill to see a great view of the City skyline, lots of restaurants nearby.

Gorgeous for a sit out for lunch or a walk about and sight seeing. Close to shops and greenwich town centre, short walk from Greenwich Park. I also saw Tom Jones here a few summers ago. Absolutely beautiful riverside walk with benches to sit and take in the view.

Beautiful campus of the former Naval college and Greenwich university right at the riverside of the Thames. The painted hall is absolutely worth the trip from central London. For you entry ticket, you are further given an audio guide, which was super interesting, and an annual membership with free entries for an entire year. If you come here, have some time on your hands to be able to fully take in the beauty of this building

Random events happen here all the time. Not bad, good events. Open air cinema, theatre, music, art events. It's great for summer days and winter evenings as there's a pub at the entrance with good views of the river. Pass through here or sit and smell the roses. You'll enjoy your time.

Sharing experience of the painted hall. Definitely worth a exploring when visiting this area of Greenwich. Audio guides are free and describe great detail the murals on the ceiling and wall which are highly recommended to get. Seating area in center large enough to lie on and take whole new angles - if only the Sistine Chapel had this. In summary it's where the heats at 🥵🔥

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding at The Painted Hall. As soon as I walk in, I couldn't help but be taken in by the beautiful hand-painted walls and ceilings, along with the large windows that let in so much light. It's like stepping into a grand royal ballroom. It's a dream come true for anyone who's ever wanted a fairytale wedding venue. I want to give a big shoutout to Peter, the toastmaster, for ensuring everything went off without a hitch. He made sure the day ran smoothly. I also want to thank Lizzie for her work behind the scenes and for coordinating the entire wedding. Both of them were easy to work with and extremely helpful. As the wedding photographer, I was truly blown away by the numerous beautiful settings available for capturing memorable moments. There was so much beauty to capture that it was almost impossible to use them all in just one shoot.

Really interesting place with loads of history. We visited the Chapel where they hold the graduation ceremonies and then walked down the spiral staircase and underneath to have a tour of the painted hall. Anika was very knowledgeable but also quite quiet so missed a bit of the talk. Ceiling is incredible and we would have missed lots if she hadn't explained significance. Also a cafe with limited good options and the obligatory gift shop

The Painted Hall is an absolute gem that I take everyone to when they visit London. When I first moved the UK 6 years ago, I fell in love with Greenwich largely because of the naval college and the Painted Hall. It is my favourite place in all of London. It's peaceful, serene and truly majestic. I still gasp each time I see it again. It's never disappointed when it comes to impressing guests. If you're looking for an incredible proposal spot- this is the ticket! Add on the market, the observatory, a walk by the Thames and afternoon tea at the fan museum and you are set for the perfect day in Greenwich.

There is a lot of history here and until recent times it was a training facility for Royal Navy officers. Now it is open to the public and you can look around. The Painted Hall has been recently renovated and needs to be seen. Check out the website for events and tours (the ghost tours around Halloween take you to the little-seen areas. The stunning Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College of Greenwich, is the largest painted ceiling in London, one of the most spectacular and important baroque interiors in Europe and known as "Britain’s Sistine Chapel". Originally intended as a grand dining room for the naval pensioners that used to live in this Royal Hospital, it soon became a ceremonial space open to visitors or special functions. Its ceiling and wall decorations were conceived and executed by the British artist Sir James Thornhill between 1707 and 1726 . The hall, instead, was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor. Highly Recommended!
