Hinton Ampner is a national trust house and gardens . Parking is off the driveway , but feels a bit non permanent and a bit of a free for all. The house itself is a fairly typical stately home, with knowledgeable volunteers. The real joy is where the house sits in the landscapes and the wonderful gardens around it. There are many places to have a private picnic and you feel that you are the only one there. As with the majority of NT places there is a shop and a cafe , which can get very busy particularly at weekends and BH's . We'll worth a visit

Having been to 7 or 8 National Trust Christmas displays this year this was by far the best. Such a creative and beautiful display. As always the room guide volunteers made the visit even better. The vegan pasty in the cafe is also a must if you are visiting.

Near Winchester, it is easy to find (however the sat-nav will bring you short when arriving from the east so look for the entrance sign about 70 metres round a bend). There is ample parking with overflow onto fields. The house is open, however the gardens are the main attraction. You enter into a walled vegetable and flower garden with one corner reserved for picnic near the shop. Behind the shop is a courtyard with a small (slow) coffee shop with a limited range. A second hand bookshop. Toilets. The courtyard sells pots and some plants. You can only walk around the left hand side of the house. This leads to a formal gardens and a church. You can walk further away from the house into fields shared with cows and sheep into the countryside. About a 1.5 hour visit or longer if you walk further into the countryside. There is not much shade so on a sunny day take precautions.

Lovely walk around Hinton Ampner. The house and gift shop were closed but we enjoyed the lovely grounds. As National Trust members we were able to park and enter for free although prices are not unreasonable, particularly if the house is open. Don’t forget that membership for the NT is excellent value on monthly direct debit and we pay only £11 a month for our family of 6. Parking is straightforward with ample space and disabled parking available a short walk from the small ticket office which is just next to the walled garden which must be beautiful in the warmer months. There are pleasant toilet facilities right next to a small but well-stocked cafe, surprisingly warm for an outside block and very clean. Staff were warm and welcoming and the whole place had a very comfortable feel. It’s a comfortable walk around the house even for a slow walker and mostly even ground. The best part is the opportunity for walkers, dog lovers and families with three enjoyable walks to enjoy.. a 45 minute stroll, a one hour (max) 2-miler and a longer 4 mile walk. We opted for the middle ground and enjoyed the walk in front of the house through the sheep field although it was bracing in the wind. There is a lovely wooded area to explore but pack your wellies in the wetter months. We will visit again when the house is open and in the summer where we will look forward to enjoying a picnic at one of the many outside picnic benches. Another lovely National Trust win.

Lovely day out helped by the glorious weather. Had coffee and sat outside service was really good. Walked around the house- it doesn’t take long as not all rooms are open. Strolled through the gardens Tulips we’re fantastic. Then a walk round the surrounding countryside. The fields full ewes and their Lambs . Lots of plants on display to buy. Very Happy Only down side was each parking spaces probably needs to be wider to accommodate cars.

The Hinton Ampner is a large parkland garden and house, with lots to discover. When we were there they were renovating the building and the first floor was inaccessible. Scaffolding was covering the back of the house facing the gardens, so we must come back sometime to see how these renovated areas look. Take plenty of time to stroll through the various parts of the nicely layed-out gardens.

It's a nice place but I was expecting bigger gardens. The price they show on entrance is members only the actual cost is £10 which I felt was too much for such a size. The guides and staff are lovely 5 stars to them!

First visit to Hinton Ampner the National Trust property was lucky enough to be able to visit two of the bedrooms on the first floor that are undergoing restoration the guide provided detailed explanation of what works are to be carried out, the ground floor rooms were beautiful with a guide in each room providing detailed information if needed, the house is not too large and has a real nice feel to it, the gardens are certainly worth a visit and although our visit was late September there was still lots to see, NT cafe on site served light meals and cakes etc. Definitely worth a visit and as usual with NT properties very knowledgeable volunteers. I hope that sometime in the future more of the rooms will be open

Lovely place to visit! Welcoming staff and volunteers. Gorgeous gardens and lovely walks to enjoy. The house is interesting too. On-site cafe is good value with a good range of cakes and hot drinks on offer as well as other snacks such as pasties, soups and sandwiches. NT shop has quality gifts/souvenirs. Worth taking out a NT membership as it's lovely to come back and see the gardens in the different seasons plus the membership gets you into all the other NT properties across the country.

Despite the National Trust’s increasing tendency to behave like a large profit making corporation, it still manages to do a great job looking after places like this. A beautiful house, wonderful grounds (with loads of trees for kids to climb) and friendly + helpful volunteers. We had a brilliant day out that was totally worth the hour’s drive. If we could just persuade the Trust to stay out of politics and look less commercial, it’d be perfection!

We were told about this National trust property, and encouraged to visit, as it wasn’t too far from home. It’s nestled on the edge of Alresford in Hampshire, and has many hidden gardens, and surprises around every corner. Unfortunately, the main house was virtually closed when we visited, with only a handful of ground floor rooms available to view, but enough of a taste to ensure a return visit when it’s all finished and back to its former glory. Friendly and helpful staff are on hand to explain what’s going on, and help with bringing its history to life. A quaint little tea room offering tea’s, coffee’s, sandwiches and snacks to suit every appetite give you the opportunity to sit down and relax, whilst taking in your surroundings. Several walks around the estate give interesting rambles to suit all abilities, with a hand map to help decide which walk will suit your needs best? We will definitely be going back, and can’t wait to see the house back to its former glory!

The eye catching architecture of the mansion at Hinton Ampner is unashamedly Neo-Georgian. The history of the house dates back nearly 500 years with alterations being made over the centuries. The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens separated into ‘rooms’. Some of the highlights include the Dell and year round floral displays in the Sunken Garden. The estate is nestled in the South Downs National Parks with beautiful views and delightful walks through the countryside and surrounding woodlands.

Lovely house to look around. Wonderful gardens to wander around and country walks. Cafe had good selection to choose from. Had pea and mint soup and chocolate tart. Both were tasty. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Big selection of plants to buy.

Wow what an amazing garden and a lot to see for it's size. There's a really good variety of plants from herbaceous to woody. The gardens are well laid out and easy to find your way around as well as been well maintained.

Another of my favourite places along with Scotney, Sheffield Park, Greys Court and West Green Garden...a really super garden, here, with beautiful views. The House was shut so we couldn't go in. I believe it's only open on weekdays. The church, the walled garden and the thousands of daffodils make a stunning backdrop for a beautiful, relaxing walk around the grounds. Not much more to say other than there are the usual NT amenities...loos, cafe, (free) parking, plants and other garden related things on sale. Smashing place to visit and would come back in another season to see the changes...and maybe go inside the house.

Lovely gardens and a beautiful location however not that many of the rooms in the house are open to the public. We thought it was expensive given this if you didn’t have a membership. They also could do with a few more staff in the coffee shop.

One of the most beautiful National Trust sites I have ever visited. Although, it is reflected in the entry price! Thankfully we had a free visit pass. Would've loved to be able to see more of the house as it is so well kept.

Lovely helpful and informative guides in the beautiful house. The Church is wonderful with a wooden internal roof. The vast gardens are dotted with interesting items and the flowerbeds still blooming.

Came today using the free voucher with the Escape into Autumn National trust scheme. Which I was really happy about, plus no parking charges. Myself and my partner loved it here, pumpkins were soo big! And nice to walk around and see the gardens and generally just get out into nature. The house itself we looked around within 5 minutes, the artwork was beautiful. Unfortunately upstairs area shut so I wouldn’t have paid personally to view the house. Nonetheless a nice enjoyable day out!

Beautiful gardens with lots of information about what was growing. The views from the immaculate front lawn were stunning. The house itself was interesting with guides at hand in every room to talk to and amazing furniture. We were a little disappointed that the upper floor was closed but our visit was free so no complaints, we'd definitely go back. We didn't eat on this occasion but the restaurant was packed and the food looked amazing. Free cucumber or lemon water was a really nice touch. With more time, we'd definitely explore more of the walking routes. Our 11 year old was overjoyed at the thousands of fallen conkers on the main lawn.

This is a fascinating place to visit. It is not very large but the rooms contains some very good quality furnishings. The gardens were still colourful even when I visited in mid October The room stewards were all most helpful and were happy to answer questions and give a lut background just about this delightful building.

We had a free pass for entry and we picked a lovely day to visit. The staff and volunteers were very friendly. Parking was very busy but we found a spot! The grounds and gardens are very well kept and beautiful to walk around. The kids liked trying to spot the fish in the pond. The cafe is pretty small but lots of extra outdoor seating is offered. LOTS of benches throughout the ground. There are toilets by the cafe. And a small gift shop on site selling gifts, plants and produce. We wandered the grounds, looked through the lower floor of the house and went into the small church. Though its not the largest National Trust we’ve been to; It’s still easy to spend a couple of hours here - longer even if eating/picnicing and if the weather is nice.

Really nice atmosphere the weather was awesome when we visited the place. Upstairs was closed in the house unfortunately we couldn't go there. The garden, views behind the house and the little church is great. There's a small cafe inside and food is available until 2.30pm and then sandwiches and pastries are available. The food area got so many wasps around so be careful.

Hinton Ampner is a lovely National Trust property to visit. The house, gardens and wider estate are fabulous to spend some time at. The gardens are well kept and when in flower look simply stunning. The estate walks are great, with the chance to walk through cattle and sheep grazing fields. A cafe, second hand book shop and gift shop are well worth a visit. The house is lovely to walk around to learn about the history of Hinton Ampner.

We loved the estate walks and formal gardens. The cafe staff were friendly and super efficient. Great place to chill and enjoy the long views (and the bees)!

Beautiful House and Gardens in Hampshire, surrounded by lots of farms that you can take a long walk. So peaceful and pretty. Unfortunately the house second floor was closed temporarily for visiting. Staff were so friendly and chatty. Their cafe is good too. Lots of benches around garden.

Dahlias looked terrific, as did the veges in the walled garden. Still some roses in bloom. Queue for coffee kiosk was rather long (for undisclosed reason the cafe was closed)

Stayed om winchester and seen this place Wasn't too far away so decided to visit. Apart from the rain it was very enjoyable. Parking close to the house. Cafe, shop, second hand book shop as always with n/t. The house was impressive however slightly disappointing that only the downstairs was open

As we are members of the national trust we decided to visit this place and yet again we were not disappointed. It's absolutely stunning and well worth the visit especially if you like flowers.

Four out of five stars ⭐️ simply because today just a gardens and walks visit and not the house. Hinton Ampner is one of our two local NT properties and gardens. We visit in ‘all Seasons’. Wonderful walks to choose from the property, lovely gardens and a splendid cafe with very friendly accommodating staff…. e.g fresh water for the 🐶 … oh and dog 🐶 friendly. We’ll be back…. Soon 👏👏😎😎

Hinton Ampner is a beautiful, but modest property (7 bedrooms) - it has a warm atmosphere and you could actually imagine living there. The walled garden is lovely and the extensive grounds are delightful with plenty of walking routes available - for dogs as well as their humans. The views across the grounds from the rear rooms and terrace of the house are simply amazing. As with most National Trust properties, there's a cafe, a garden shop and ample parking. All the staff we met were charming, knowledgeable and friendly. On the day we went there was a three-piece trad' jazz group playing on the lawn at the front of the house, which also added to the atmosphere. I'd highly recommend Hinton Ampner for a day out.

We went last week, the house was shut which was a bit of a disappointment and the gardens were OK but nothing special but yet again might be worth a re visit in the summer and when the house is open. We are national trust members so not too bad when it isn't as good as you expected. But like I said defiantly worth a re visit when house open and in summer. Kids needless to say still still had a great day and a lovely cup of coffee and cake at the end! X

Lovely place to walk the dogs, tasty food and all the trees! (Yes I’m aware I take pictures of the bare ones 😂)

Popped in for lunch and a look around the gardens in October. We saw on the website that the house was closed for renovation work but didn't realise it was covered in scaffolding. Gardens were still looking good though and the cafe was nice with gluten free options.

  • 5/5 Raghavendra V. 1 year ago on Google
Great day out site with ample walking trails, loads of shade with picnic areas, a cafe serving hot-cold delicious food n drinks (I particularly liked that they keep fresh water for refills next to the cutlery), beautiful garden & ample parking. The shop offers plants and plant pots (medium to fairly large ones). Definitely worth a visit or a few to explore the entire site. Highly recommend.
