Standing near the Golden Jubilee Bridge, It has an interesting history. Made during the reign of Thutmose III circa 1450 BC. It was presented as a gift to Great Britain in 1819 but not moved to London until 1877, due to the cost. Made of red granite, it is 69 feet tall and weighs 200 tons.

The obelisk dates from around 1475BC. It was presented to Britain in 1819 by the Turkish viceroy of Egypt. Due to transportation problems, it didn't arrive in London until 1878. Due to subsidence on its planned site (Houses of Parliament), it finally found its home on the Victoria embankment.

A large statue by the river. The needle is one of a pair of obelisks. Together named cleopatra's needles. Moved from ruins in Egypt. The other needle is in New York. Either side we have sphinx watching the needle. It looks bold to look at, and makes an excellent statue in front of the beautiful London skyline.

For a simple walk-by monument, this is a pretty neat piece of history. This ancient Egyptian Obelisk sat on its side in Egypt for ages until it was gifted to England in the early 1800’s but it didn’t make its trip to where it is now until 1877. That makes us a solid 150 years old here in London. It’s flanked by a pair of Sphinx and adorned with hieroglyphics and a couple sneaky scarabs. There is a matching sister obelisk in New York City which made the trip right around the same time.

A very impressive obelisx given to Britain by the Egyptian government in the 19th century. It is over 3000 years old, standing at almost 70ft tall with 2 sphinx on either side. Great views by the river Thames on the embankment side.

I love Cleopatra so much 😍😍😍 and I learnt that we have Sphinx in Embankment in London😱😱😱 I did rush there and went to see the Bronze Sphinx, Cleopatra's needle and Cleopatra banksπŸƒπŸƒπŸƒπŸ˜Ahhh Cleopatra Ahhh😍she takes my breath away. By the way I believe that I am reincarnated now but before I had a past life in Ancient Egypt and I believe that I was Caesarion who was Cleopatra's first son from Julius CaesarπŸ‘ΌπŸΌ. I was so excited to see mini Cleopatra face and the Sphinx as well as Cleopatra's needle, it has been more than 2000 years passed since I have seen my past life mother Cleopatra. I can't express my feelings and I was over the moon. I didn't have to go to Today's Egypt to see the Sphinx. I am also planning to go and visit Egypt soon. The right time is coming for me. I am proud of my past, now and future. I came back to finish off what I couldn't. Program 1 is in progress, borderless world order will be delivered. My darlings, I definitely recommend you go and see these precious sculptures in Embankment, you will not regret it. Magnificent Ra will be happy to see you allβ˜ΊοΈπŸ‘πŸ’™πŸ’ŽπŸ’«βœ¨πŸ‘ΌπŸΌπŸ’«βœ¨πŸ’™πŸ’ŽThanks for reading my review, love you all and thanks for accepting me as crazy as I amπŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

It's worth passing by this site as you walk along the Thames. As you head to more popular sites, it is likely to be close to your path between areas. The plaque provides the needed background on the column to appreciate it as a piece of history.

Lovely place to sit and have a game of chess. I dropped a pawn into the Thames, but that was admittedly entirely my fault. Luckily, after my friend and I tied a plastic bag to a plastic bag to my sweater to my friend's polo shirt I was able to hoist the pawn to safety, and it was reassuring that a passing fire boat stopped to make sure we did not require assistance. This was a 4.9 star experience, minus 0.3 stars for having suffered minor sunburn, taking us to 4.6 stars which rounds up to 5. The obelisk someone stole or rescued or whatever verb you'd like to start an argument with from Egypt was also impressive.

It was gifted to Queen Victoria in 1819 by Mohamed Ali Pacha (Egypt ruler in that time) but the PM (Liverpool) thought it would be expensive to ship it all the way to Britain. So, it was delayed until 1877. I dont think the lions are authentic but they are well made as same as the base of the obelisk. Definitely good view with the river and London Eye.

Historical item of importance given as a gift from Egypt to the UK. Has shrapnel damage to it from a raid by the Luftwaffe during WWII. On the banks of the Thames worth a wander if your in the area.

An interesting look into Victorian London, pretty much hidden in plain sight. A great visit for anyone who enjoys ancient Egypt or historical London or even want to see different compared generally day to day city life. Add it to your list especially if you are in the area

Amazing historical landmark that no one ever talks about sitting in plain sight...the adjacent spinx also has an interesting story... definitely worth the short walk to see.

If you love Egyptian archaeology and even if you don't go and see it. The oldest statue in London. Has shrapnel holes left in place from world war one. Great views of the Thames and a nice walk through the park opposite to get to and from Embankment station.

It was interesting to see this after having been to Egypt this spring and seeing many obelisks. The London air hasn't been kind to this work of art though, it's been thoroughly corroded but it's still an amazing thing to see in London.

A lovely walk along the Embankment on a sunny spring Saturday in February. I arrived eventually at Cleopatra's Needle and decided to take a few pictures of the two Sphinx and the Needle. The view across the Thames of the South Bank of the river was great. An enjoyable lunchtime walk.

It's interesting to learn about the monuments that make up our landscape. I read the inscription but to be honest dont know much about the history behind this sculpture. Hoping to read up about it and find out more.

Visited twice as part of research into the needle, which I find fascinating. Theres always someone there visiting it. And ive had numerous conversations there about its history. Its a lovely spot but imagine very exposed in the winter. This doesnt help with the erosion and some of the inscriptions are beginning to fade. Well worth a visit if your near Embankment tube station.

Fabulous views from the point to most of the massive landmarks of the city. The connectivity is fairly good and this is so much less crowded than the other Thames walk paths.

Great monument (really wish it were housed indoors, though!) - The story of its arrival is absolutely mental. A gift from the Egyptians, lost at sea!

Cleopatra Needle in London, . We can find the only spink statue in the city. Great design, realy beautiful. There is an Obelisk beside the monument. You can reach the site from Embankment tube station or waterloo station via Jubilee Bridge. A stunning view with river Thames's ambience. Hidden gems in London !

This was GIFTED, not stolen by the ruler of Egypt and Sudan, Muhammad Ali to Queen Victoria. A small piece of ancient Egypt for all to see for free.

Obelisk from the Ancient Egyptian New Kingdom erected by Tuthmosis III and later on repurposed by Ramses II (the Great) by adding the 2nd and 3rd line of hieroglyphs on each side of each face, after a long trip full of perils the Obelisk arrived to England and was erect in this side of the Thames alongside two purposely made sphinxes of the Original Pharaoh, also you can see the shrapnel damage from the the German bombing during the war

One of the lesser visited sites in London. It is a really interesting landmark that has a great surrounding view of the river and has a good view of the main city.

there is a place where you can sit on the side of the river away from passers-by, with a glass of wine or a book. an incredibly peaceful view. And I found an art object on a stone on the Thames side. It was like a signπŸ’œπŸ™
