Pies baby! Damn good pies! Yes I’m reviewing this as an American who went to this delightful restaurant on his Holliday. Our tour guide pointed it out mentioning how “Red Lion” was a common name and my wife and I decided to try it. He should started with “If you want some delicious meat pies that give you a taste of British cuisine, go there!” Also dope toffee pudding… get it.

Wonderful atmosphere in this pub. The dining room is on the second floor and gives you a fun experience eating in this classic British pub. We loved the food that we had as well the meat pies and chips were all full of flavor and well deserving of 5 stars. Definitely worth a visit if you’re near by!

Fabulous service and good food. Hubby had fish and chips and the fish took up his whole plate. I had smoked salmon, much like lox. Very good. The stairs are very narrow, so beware of imbibing too much!

Visited during The Queens final journey through London. What a day. Staff on site were calm and collected, even though they were herding humans left and right. We had a club sandwich which was delicious and dished as nicely as a sandwich could be. Great location, great views, great day all round. Photos taken from our position outside so looking into the road/buildings

Fantastic late lunch! We had a big day of bus tours, boat rides and the London eye and our kids had gotten hangry. They were rocking busy and about ready to transfer dinner service, but saw our situation and found us a spot. We were grateful and treated to some amazing food. The two adults had the pie platter for two, which was more than plentiful. Our son got the burger and fries and our daughter shared off our plates. We had a few beers and all left ready for an evening of musicals! Amazing old building and ambiance. Highly recommend…but make a reservation and show up on time. It turns out we got a table because another group was 8 minutes late.

Classic English food with a dining room that overlooks a bustling street. Interior is super cozy. I ate the Fish & Chips. If you've never had English food, expect it to be much milder than the normal fare (if you're Indian like me). Fish was battered nicely, chips tasted like chips and the sauce was nice. Service was amazing and our waiter was pleasant. We arrived early, so there was time to chitchat. Come here once for the experience while you're in london.

Really quaint pub right in the political heart of London. The staff are wonderful! Attentive, welcoming and chatty which is exactly what you want. And an amazing sloe gin and mulled cider drink...it's worth it for that alone

Classic quintessential pub. Wonderfully located near serious attractions. Food was superb. Not cheap but superb. Walking distance from Victoria. Close to Parliament and Palace and more. Comfy relaxed friendly. Bigger fuller restaurant upstairs but wee pub is gorgeous.

I’ve visited this pub numerous times across the years and it’s always been ok. It’s massively over priced but that’s the area. Currently though, apart from one Asian male member of staff, the workers are like surly and scruffy teenagers. They were curt and unhelpful. The food is extortionate, kitchen only open from 12pm. Ordered chicken goujons, 4 for just under a tenner with some cumin ketchup - they were dry and not worth half the price! Still, people pop in for the location not the service and food, but be warned.

Ended up here by chance and sure glad we did. Even though the fryer was broken so couldn’t get the fish n chips or the scotch egg - we got the pork pie instead and it was amazing! The fries were so delicious as well. Very sweet staff. Cheers

An incredible choice -especially for those of you who want a taste of 3 different scrumptious pies. Sophia gave us great advice and we couldn’t be more pleased. Five stars are not enough for how much we enjoyed our meal. My spouse had the special Jubilee pie and gives it high marks as well.

Fantastic food and atmosphere. We have eaten here two or three times over the years. The meat pie was the best I have ever eaten and the kids loved the fish and chips. We had even more fun taking pictures in the basement lounging area that may not have even been associated with the restaurant up top! Great place to visit and eat.

Our server was friendly and attentive, overall fantastic. We enjoyed a late lunch and several pints. The bathrooms are a little tricky to get upstairs and back, but the place is a neatly adorned and sets the bar high for English pubs.

I love this place. I actually visited it twice during my recent trip for London. The first time was just for drinks during a rain storm and then I came back two nights later for dinner. The atmosphere is great and the staff is wonderful and friendly. The Camden IPA is one my favorite IPA's ever. The food was great and fresh and it could not be in a better location in Central London and price is great! Definitely check it out!

4 stars for the fish & chips ! Not the cleanest place but they cleaned it up when we dined in . Service is a tad slow due to the lack of manpower but worth the wait. Limited space to dine in as this is a pub . Cash is still accepted here. Apparently Winston Churchill used to have lunch here back in the days .

Walked by here strolling through westminster, could see the atmosphere from outside and wasn’t disappointed! Warm and welcoming, friendly servers, didn’t grab any food but it looked good from other peoples plates. Grabbed a cider, Cornish orchards was worth the money! Crisp and delicious. Would definitely run in here again. A great spot to bring a crowd, very lively.

The pub downstairs was fine. Busy, lively and good fun. The dining room upstairs... Awful. The picture shows the £18 turkey Christmas dinner. I've had better school meals. We ordered starters and mains but everything came at the same time. Felt like an overpriced tourist trap.

After visiting the Parliament and Big Ben area, we stopped by this historical pub. Lived up to its reputation, it was packed and filled with suits lol. According to the pub, Charles Dickens and Sr Churchill were regulars here. Nice beer selection and of course we tried a few. I enjoyed the New England Pale Road Soda. Actually had a several of them hahaha. I say check it out.

We loved this Historical Pub, where Sir Winston Churchill, among many other notables, quaffed a pint or two. And the mini steak pie was so good we brought 9 others back later in the week with us to try it out. Must stop by and raise a toast.

An old bar with lots of history and you can feel it with the pictures in the atmosphere around you. The pie was small but quite enough for a small snack for two and the drink Was delightful and not expensive compared to the pubs in the area.

It was a great experience. English pubs are always a good time. If it's a little too much you can always sit in the dining area upstairs. I had the Fish and Chips and a Gin & Tonic and my husband had a pie. Both were amazing and we enjoyed it.

Great place to stop for a British pub meal or just a beer. This is a small pub, with a friendly staff and good service. A full service bar and large selection of beer. I enjoyed my fish and chips. Great atmosphere and history. I had an unexpected layover in London And found this place for dinner. Made my day.

Yummy food but VERY poor service. Adequately staffed but no hustle. Twice, waitstaff sat down and ate their own meal at adjacent tables while we waited for service. No response to requests, no checking on our needs, no attempt to provide/sell additional items to our order. Poor washroom conditions. The great food did not make up for an overall disappointing (at best) experience.

Slow service, staff struggled to know if there was a restaurant area or where the toilets were, it wasn’t that busy but was stood at the bar being ignored till I asked to order. Beer was good, club sandwich was mostly bread with a very thin slice of chicken and 2 very thin slices of bacon. Probably better options around this area.

Great fish and chips & pies. Prices between the $18-$25. Big portions. Expect to wait a little foe the food because it is small and very popular. But great food for a pub. Well maintained and clean. We sit at the bar because the dining room was reserved. Staff friendly and fast

Very good fish and chips. The chips were crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside. The peas which I'd never had before were lovely, great flavor and texture. The fish which was obvious the main event was crispy, moist, and flaky. Very good portion also, I couldn't finish it all. The cider I had was delicious, refreshing and not too sweet. My only complaint is if you go alone there no way to hold your table while you go up to bar and order your food and drinks. Someone tried to snag my table while I was placing my order. I reclaimed it but not without him making a hissy fit like a toddler. Spoiled an otherwise great experience.

Didn’t have reservations but they gave us a table as long as we could be done by about 8pm due to the tables being reserved at that time. The four of us ate our meals which were very good, had a drink and desert and we finished just before 8pm as we got there around 6:30pm. The service was great and the food was very tasty.

I’ve been to this place many times over the years and it encapsulates a number of the worst things about U.K. pub culture: expensive, shabby and (some) downright nasty staff. The final straw was last Friday. I was sitting at what turned out to be a very wobbly table in the front window, a friend came over with a full round, set them on the table and then accidentally knocked the wobbly leg. The beers went everywhere. A particularly surly female member of staff working the floor came over, extremely annoyed to have to clear up, said she knew it was wobbly and implied we should’ve been more careful. And then my friend had to pay for the full round again... essentially we paid double to be insulted. This pub sucks, try The Clarence or The Old Shades up the road. They’re so much better.

  • 3/5 Adam D. 4 years ago on Google
There's no space, the choice of beer is pretty standard, and there's a weird smell. But it is iconic, and the default for Westminster drinks...

Went here with the family for a roast last night after doing some touristy stuff in the city, arrived around 6.30pm. My beef was dryer and tougher than an old leather boot. The Yorkshire pud was stale and like sponge. My girlfriend has to peel the skin off the chicken as it wasn't nice. Red cabbage had a truly unusual taste to it. My girlfriends mother had the fish and chips which she told me afterwards was cold. Due to how quickly the food arrived, I think it was quite clear that the food had been preprepped under the heating lamp, where it had been drying out all day. Girlfriend's red wine must have been weeks old, as it was like vinegar. To add insult to injury, the staff put the air con on freezing cold after we had finished out food. After 10 mins of sitting in the arctic, I asked them if they could turn it off, so they replied saying that they turned it on as the room closed in 15 mins. They literally tried to kick us out by putting on freezing cold air!! £100 for 4 terrible meals and 2 alcoholic drinks. Terrible value, will avoid like the plague.

We found the Red Lion while we were nearby. They have food up the stairs above the bar and there are lots of your typical options for pub food. I ordered the classic fish and chips and they were delicious!!l I don’t think you can go wrong here.

Absolutely wonderful. Our second time visiting. The last time there was nothing available. This time they had 30 min until a reservation. They said if we could get in and out in that time, they had room. We did! Food was excellent. Will visit again next time.

Best Fish & Chips on the island! Special thanks to the gentleman managing the tables for he found us (my daughter, my wife and I) famished and waiting outside in the side lane, so he called us back and arranged a table during the peak lunch hour (without a reservation). God bless him. Wonderful staff. Waiter was helpful, too.

My daughter and I visited the UK in July of 2019. The tour guide we hired took us here for lunch. It was absolutely delicious!! I'm not one to eat fish and chips back in the States but I tried them here and it was one of the best meals I've ever had. She had the lamb shepherds pie and was raving! (Had she ever eaten lamb before? Nope. I would never make it while she was growing up because I hated it as a kid with that green jelly, come on, what the heck is that?!!). The vinegar fries were awesome too and I'm unable to recreate them at home, sadly. We spent five days in London aa well as the breathtaking countryside with good food aplenty but the Red Lion was my favorite. So much more to see we have to go back. Red Lion will be visited again on day one of the return trip!

This was our favorite place for dinner and drinks in London. Great food and atmosphere. My wife loved the fish and chips. I loved the blonde ale (and the food too!). Definitely will return on our next visit to London.

Conclusion: Great drinks, Awesome food, Great Service Most of my family ordered “traditional” UK food like fish and chips and mince pies. They did not disappoint- the food was great. The service was also great, the waitress was patient and attentive with our group of 7. Everyone ordered a variety of drinks, from beer to liquor (also very good). There is also a combo of 3 beers with 3 mince pies (should check it out!)

Excellent classic British pub, a nice, fun and cheerful environment on the ground floor, and a great cozy atmosphere on the first floor. The waitresses were very nice and the food/beer was excellent. Needless to comment on the location and history of the place, it all adds up to a great experience. We had the fish and chips and the steak pie. The pie was accompanied by one free pint, which was also a great deal.
