The place isn't hard to find taking in account where it's situated. Had a nice time here too bad the tour isn't longer. Walking with the petroleum lamp makes you feel more close to the underground feeling. Was interesting to learn that famous people held concerts underground. It's amazing what people dug the tunnels back in the time without technology. It can get chilli. Next to the caves you'll The Labyrinthe where you can have role play fun. Coming with public transport closest stops are Chislehurts Train Station and bus stop Chislehurts Station (stop A and B). The caves are 10 minute walk.

This was an wonderful experience with a knowledgeable, funny and interactive tour guide. The cafe has good food as well and a welcoming atmosphere. The caves at Chislehurst in Kent, are a labyrinth of man-made tunnels, forming a maze covering over 6 Hectares and are up to 30 metres below the surface! In World War 2 up to 15 000 people stayed there sheltering from the bombing 💣 of London!

It is an interesting place. Good historical value. The caves are really impressive, and think that it once was a venue for live music... and hosted the likes of Hendrix, beetles, and Led Zeppelin to name few; it's really impressive. The price is right... but I think they can create a longer tour and take us a little further into the caves.

I didn't expect that its such a great experience and it's in London at a very affordable price. I popped in randomly on saturday 5 min to 3pm and I got on the tour at 3. They only allow people with a tour due to health and safety and you can easily get lost there, its massive! Love the tour and history of the place, experience walking with an old oil lamp and endless tunnels around. Perfect for a windy or rainy day. Already recommended to all my friends!

I took my wife here last Sunday for the first time. The cave itself is very impressive, I won't say too much on the caves as they need to be experienced first hand. Our tour guide was a Great guy called Peter. He was very professional, and explained the history of the caves with humour and amazing knowledge. Peter was also available after the tour for any questions or just a general chat. If you've not been to the caves before, and fancy something different I totally recommend it. It's great value as well.

Lovely 1 mile walk through the caves with a sometimes nice but very grumpy snappy tour guide providing the history of the caves, although we dare ask a question! Lit up by the adults carrying real lanterns which makes this an exceptional experience for the family. Tour is about 1 hour, wear masks whilst inside and please dont wake the cat whose snoozing in the office. There is a cafe providing a varied menu, suitable for all, ice creams and drinks, large car park and toilets. Easy to get to and a Harvester is nearby if you prefer a more substantial menu for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Yes I would go again.

There's just something great about being underground. Feels otherworldly. The touch of just having the gas lamps meant it was pretty dark all the time but that adds to the atmosphere. Peter, the guide, had a kind of spiritual faith healer vibe about him and it was kind of spooky watching him walk backwards pretty quickly the whole way around - like he was floating as you couldn't really see his feet! He clearly knows those caves like the back of his hand and loves being down there. When we went to the "haunted pool" and he aimed his torch at the water, it created some beautiful wave patterns across the cave...loved that bit. I think I'll go again at some point as the tour seemed fairly random and the place is massive so you'd get a different experience every time.

Fascinating place to visit, full of a rich history - Saxons, Romans, mushrooms, and World War II. The guides are experts and take you safely through the cavenous tunnels

This place has strong roots in my own family history and of the nation during the second World War. It was the biggest air-raid shelter in the country! In addition it has made many other roles throughout the life of the caves- all man made. Lots of the war relics are still there and the guide did a reasonable job of explaining them. Good atmosphere with the hand held lanterns. Small cafe with good service.

Didn't prebook tickets as it was a last-minute decision, but I didn't wait long to purchase on the day. Really affordable day out! I paid £20 for me and 2 teenagers plus 2 drinks! If you took a picnic, there is a seating area I noticed outside, but there's also a cafe on site. Really interesting and interactive, the tour guide clearly LOVES his job and kept us entertained with his quirkiness. You're not allowed to take pictures down there which is a shame but it does make you be more present.

It's definitely a little historic gem, meaning to visit for the longest time, only 30 mins drive from home, parking ample, reception staff, tour guides knowledgeable and bubbly. If you go as a group defo book in advance for a slot, I went by myself but got in smoothly. It's a marvel of history. Shame photos weren't allowed in the caves. As I noted and see on the reviews, plenty were taken! You do need to be able to take a couple for memory alone and show people, so the proprietors need to be more linent on this matter, I would say, to get the word out. I managed to get one but felt ever so guilty 😔, I don't really see the problem. I can understand about using flashes, but otherwise, why not, we live in a digital world. The caves are really impressive, and the venue for live music... and hosted the likes of Hendrix, beetles, and Led Zeppelin, to name a few; it's really impressive, Dr. who used it as a film set. I believe you can hire the spaces out. Tour was short (maybe do two types, with half an hour 45 mins extra), as I think it would have been nice to go into and through some of the other interiors of the cave. Defo photos should be allowed. There is a little theatre spot outside, which isn't advertised. They could specify a theatre show to do with the caves, era, etc. There is a walk at Hawkwood estate,(I didn't get to do as rained down, but could have planned ahead had i known - next time - if i come with my grown children?), and if the theatre had show times, people could come back after to see it, so making a real day of it utilising the space and time. The cafe is warming and well-earned warm soup from the caves which were cold. So if you go in autumn or winter wrap up. They even do birthday parties. To enter was reasonable £8 for the experience and knowledge, though at times the guide can not be heard at the back, so need to be upfront, but he was charming.

Absolutely a great place to visit. Very interesting especially with having guided tour. Uneven floor but is possible for people with some walking difficulties. Nice cafe for a little snack and drink.

Bard inspired: Prepare to be spellbound by both the majesty of the cave and the magic of Peter, your guide through this subterranean wonderland. Don't be fooled by the green jacket and scholarly spectacles; this man's a bard of the underworld, weaving tales of tough times from the war. He'll have you peering into crevices with newfound curiosity, not just for the geological wonders, but for the whispers of history tucked away within. Yes, there might be moments of nervous giggles, but Peter's captivating stories and insightful knowledge will chase away any shadows of doubt. This isn't just a cave tour, it's a journey into the heart of the earth, guided by a master storyteller with a beard worthy of Merlin himself.

We were today. Makes an amazing impression, you can feel all the energy accumulated there, the place has many interesting and terrifying stories at the same time. Definitely worth visiting. In the cafe you can eat a tasty burger with fries or have a good coffee.

What can I say? A great location, steeped in history. Made even better by what was one of the best tour guides I've ever had. Peter made the tour so much more interactive with his tales, jokes, and activities. I really would recommend this experience to anybody, and hope that you get Peter as your tour guide!

Went inside Chislehurst Caves for the first time yesterday, I was absolutely mesmerised and could hardly speak it was so breathtaking! Our wonderful tour guide Maria made it a very interesting and magical experience with that wonderfully loud voice! Can not wait to visit again child free so I can take more time to look at things in detail! Hopefully visiting again soon with my best friend! Beautifully run by really interesting and kind people, thankyou!

When going to this place, make sure you bring or wear warm clothing it gets really cold once you enter the cave It cost £8 it's best to book online just to make sure you get a place it roughly about 1 hour to 45 minutes to do the tour you are not permitted not to any photos or filming while the cave make sure you wear sensible footwear To protect your feet You are given an oil lamp to help you see the give you the effect of the mine /cave It's dark down their lots of different ways to get lost. The guide was good he was friendly & everyone felt at ease I would go again only I'd I could take photos the next best thing was the museum ,& cafe located in the building

Very enjoyable visit. Tour lasts just under an hour and is very atmospheric. The guide was entertaining and very well informed. There is even a pleasant cafe there if you fancy lunch or a snack. Lots of free parking too or a short walk from Chislehurst Station.

I recently had a tour here and l found the caves very interesting. The tour lasted about 50 mins and the guide was very knowledgeable. While on the tour you are not allowed to take photos/videos of the cave or use any flash. I would recommend wearing good shoes and taking a jumper as it is cold underground even if it is a warm day. Take a lamp for light and warmth too! There is a cafe selling food and drinks and a shop too.

A fun way to spend an hour! The tours cost £7 per adult and last about 50 minutes. Our tour guide, Chris, was engaging, knowledgeable and funny. He stuck around to chat to visitors afterwards. The tour covers about a mile of the vast cave network, sometimes the ceiling dips a bit low for tall people, but otherwise it's an easy walk. The temperature is pretty cold down there, and the atmosphere is quite spooky! The cafe upstairs is good value with decent choices. No cameras are allowed in the caves, and lanterns are given out to light your way around. Well worth a visit if you're in the area!

Guided experiences such as this one are always made better by a guide with personality, and that was certainly the case when I visited with a friend on the Easter weekend. Though I didn't catch his name, our bearded guide was immensely knowledgeable, patient, friendly and hilarious, in spite of the slightly less-than-considerate families chatting over him. Spending an hour in those dark tunnels with mostly just hand-held oil lamps to light the way, it really does take you back in time. Definitely a unique day out, best enjoyed by kids over 10 and anyone under 5ft 7! (the ceilings can get a little low)

What a fantastic find this was and well worth the hours drive. I’d recommend booking your tickets in advance because it’s busy and you could end up disappointed. Tickets are cheap and the cafe was reasonably priced, and although not a large selection of food it was nice. The tour guide was brilliant, funny and knowledgeable. Made it interesting. The caves were brilliant, absolutely amazing and really enjoyed it. The tour was about 50 minutes in total. No photos allowed. The lamps were a nice touch. Shame can’t see more of the caves but will definitely go again.

Great experience. Our guide was Peter he seemed very experienced and knowledgeable, was humorous and spoke clearly and eloquently. He demonstrated a game that children played down the caves during the war, but didn't really explain how it worked, so that was a little confusing. But all in all a very good experience, enjoyed by the wife and i and our granddaughter.

A brilliant tour, wish it could have been for longer. Our guide (sorry don't know his name, shorter bearded guy) was a great host. He walked backwards the whole time on a tour of just four of us which was insane considering how bumpy the floor of the caves are. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff, that definitely make me want to return! If a longer more in depth tour was available I would definitely book that. Also the option for a small group in the booking form for maybe a higher price would be a good, I would happily pay a bit extra.

I revisit the place every few years, there are so many stories and each guide of the tour has a different angle. Love the atmosphere - great adventure!

We have been several times previously and always enjoyed the tour. Today was mind crushingly boring and the young person who was with us visiting for the first time couldn't understand why we had rated the caves so highly before . The guide spoke of nothing apart from the war and didn't point out anything else. He asked pointless stupid questions and we weren't the only dissatisfied visitors , others were voicing the same views. Such an interesting place was turned into one of the most boring 50 minutes of our lives. Shame.

Really enjoyed a few hours with the grandchildren at Chiselhurst caves. Excellent guide, who was both informative and fun. Nice cafe for a coffee and a bun beforehand. Good value and run in a family friendly way. The grandchildren loved it. Parents of noisy children go at their own risk! The guide might leave them all to find their own way out! Quite right too. Large free car park.

I'll give them that, it is a cave. As an important part of ww2 history as it may be, the tour does not reflect it. The guide is recycling old jokes without even trying to look interested, and a lot of the site history remains untold. Any questions voiced are either ignored or answered with one sentence. The Shop and exhibition at the entry is very poor. The coffee machine is powder based and the burgers seem to be straight out of an Iceland freezer. Other than that, everything was great. It is quite cold down there, so it might function as a cool break on a hot summer day. Nice if you are already around, but not worth a trip for itself.

  • 5/5 Alexandra C. 7 months ago on Google
The tour was fantastic! Darren was an amazing guide and extremely knowledgeable about everything. Still can’t believe he did almost the whole tour walking backwards in the dark. Thank you for an enjoyable experience and the extra info at the end (Imperial was worth the walk up the hill!) I would highly recommend this adventure. Great on a hot day as the caves are cool (bring a sweater)

Accompanied my son's school as a parent volunteer. Had a good time. Kids had a great time as well. The caves have a great history and quite intriguing to learn that more than 40 thousand people took shelter in the caves at its peak.

Very unique experience close to London. Well connected by public transport and very well priced. Makes for a great half day trip from London. Special shoutout to our guide Peter who was amazing. The cafe is also great and has lots of good vegan and vegetarian options. Highly recommended.

Interesting local tourist attractions, I knew nothing about the 'Caves' beforehand and you wouldnt suspect they were there driving in the local area. The guide was very entertaining and my husband and I enjoyed it. My young son and some of the young ones on the tour were a little scared at points but able to complete the tour and my son enjoyed it in the end. Small cafe with reasonable prices attached (above ground) and small museum. I thought the museum part would benefit from a bit more information and structure.

The caves are fab! You're given a paraffin light to carry as it's pitch black in the caves. The guide was great although he talked mainly about the war and nothing about why the caves were dug for chalk etc. He flashed his light over interesting things but very quickly so you missed what he was talking about and if the tour party is more than about 4 pple, you've no chance of seeing what he was aiming at. Not suitable for disabled pple or those with walking difficulties as the ground is uneven. If you're hard if hearing, keep close to the guide. Well worth going to see these as they have lots of history

Great visit to the Caves. It’s a guided tour format lasting just under an hour, so you can’t really ‘have at it’ yourself (but this is also the case in most such places, and for good reason). I liked soaking in the ambiance of the place, and just seeing all the generations of human activity that have left their mark. Our tour guide (Darren) was pitch perfect in his narration (and I also really appreciate how he would walk whole stretches entirely backwards without looking). Overall, if you’re passing by, definitely worth a visit.

Visited the Caves (mine) with my girlfriend. She visited as a child and recommended it for a day out. Within ULEZ boundary on A20 do bear this in mind however there js free parking on site. Bus services ran nearby but I do not recall the service numbers. Very enjoyable and engaging tour courtesy of Peter. His intimate, personal knowledge and near lifetime affiliation with the Caves gave it a layer of affection as he gave us a guided tour. Paraffin lamps for 16+ visitors added a charm and fanfare to proceedings. An enjoyable 1+ hour tour of a unique corner of the London/Kent suburbs.

My family came form the US and as always, I wasn't disappointed. The tour took a different route and we got to see a few sights that aren't often shown. Our humorous guide and the other staff were very knowledgeable on not only the caves, but our surrounding area. Had the best time and will, as i have for many years, visit again abd again to the cave. Thank you guys, had an awesome time and my family loved it too. See y'all again soon

Absolutely worth a visit. The tour was approximately 50 minutes long. Our tour guide was very engaging with interesting stories about the caves. Can feel a bit chilly in caves so wear a warm layer. Floor a bit uneven so wear sensible shoes.

We absolutely loved our experience! The stories, the scare and the sights. Maria was an amazing tour guide. He showed us around, gave us lots of information and answered our questions. He really knew what he was talking about and you can really tell he enjoys the tours. I cannot recommend this tour guide enough! First cave I’ve been too and definitely not the last! PS. Be sure to use your lanterns to look closely at walls as the residents at the time have scratched their names and DOB/dates at the time. I personally loved that!!

On a recent trip to England, this was one of my favorite places I visited. The guide was fantastic - knowledgeable, funny, personable, and handled children in a kind but firm way. My only issue was I wanted to explore so much more, I could have stayed down there all day.

  • 5/5 Sam Q. 6 months ago on Google
Went with my wife and 6 month old (in a Bjorn) and had a fantastic time. Peter, our tour guide, did a great job of telling the story of the old mine whilst also telling us related stories of his time in exploring it. He was very light hearted and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend it.

It is an excellent and very reasonable trip out with the children for a couple of informative hours. There was an interesting, relevant tour for 45 minutes with a good mix of facts and humour. My children of 9,7, and 5 all enjoyed it. Peter, the guide, was great....
