This
beautiful
bandstand
is
well
maintained
-
well
done
Southwark
Council
(or
not
-
read
below!)
These
historical
Victorian
structures
are
under
threat
and
many
throughout
England
have
disappeared.
The
Bowie
Bandstand
in
Beckenham
(Bromley
Council)
is
in
a
very
poor
state.
See
Paul
Rabbitt's
books
on
them.
So
use
them!
Perform
a
spontaneous
artistic
event
-
Recite
some
Shakespeare
-
perform
a
mime!
-
Play
a
tin
whistle
tune!
Keep
them
alive!
Postscript
-
apparently
this
bandstand
is
new!
Apparently
modelled
on
Clapham
Common's
Bandstand
-
which
in
turn
was
modelled
on
one
of
two
-
the
sister
of
which
used
to
be
here
in
Southwark
Park!
What
goes
around
comes
around.
It
was
paid
for
(millions!)
by
lottery
funds
and
built
by
Dorothea
Ironworks.
Apparently
the
originals
were
built
by
Captain
Fowke
for
the
Great
Exhibition
and
were
evicted
from
there.
London
County
Council
purchased
the
two
for
Southwark
Park
and
Peckham
Rye
in
about
1889.
The
original
Southwark
Park
one
was
donated
to
the
'melt-down'
patriotic
movement
for
the
war
and
melted
down!
(Very
little
of
melted-down
products
were
used
for
the
'war
effort'.
It
was
a
fraudulent
test
of
patriotism
and
ruined
many
front
gardens'
wrought
iron
designs
still
seen
today).
So
the
Southwark
Park
Bandstand
is
a
modern
replacement.
