While
riding
to
Charlton
a
few
days
ago
I
got
as
far
as
Greenwich
when
my
handlebar
suddenly
snapped.
Fortunately
I
was
at
traffic
lights
and
they
snapped
as
I
was
about
to
ride
off.
If
I'd
been
riding
at
speed
when
this
freakish
incident
occurred
this
could
have
ended
much
more
deleteriously.
I
walked
back
home
the
3
or
so
miles
to
Peckham
with
the
bike
on
my
shoulder
and
when
inside
the
flat
had
to
file
down
part
of
the
stem
to
remove
the
headset
and
then
release
the
forks
from
the
frame.
Try
as
I
did
-
and
I
was
brutal
at
times
-
the
remnants
of
the
stem
wouldn't
budge
and
eventually
I
admitted
defeat.
A
local
cycle
shop
in
Peckham
is
closed
on
Monday
so
using
my
brother's
road
bike
visited
Cycles
UK
in
Greenwich.
I
was
met
at
the
door
by
one
of
the
staff
and
explained
what
had
happened
and
he
asked
me
to
wait
whilst
he
took
the
fork
with
the
recalcitrant
stem
to
area
repairs
etc
are
carried
out.
I
waited
outside
and
about
five
minutes
later
the
guy
I
initially
saw
opened
the
door
with
the
fork
and
now
separated
stem!
I
was
expecting
to
be
given
a
quote
for
trying
to
remove
the
stem
and
instead
was
given
back
usable
forks
and
NO
CHARGE
for
doing
this!!!
Gobsmacked
at
such
brilliant
service
and
delighted
to
offer
a
5
star
review
of
Cycles
UK.
PS.
The
Chas
Roberts
bike
that
I
ride
daily
has
been
neglected
and
left
outside
in
all
weathers
since
2017
as
I
sleep
in
a
MPV.
It's
a
beautiful
bike,
the
best
I've
ever
ridden
and
unfortunately
the
rust
is
seizing
up
the
seat
stem,
pedals
and
the
frame
might
possibly
suddenly
disintegrate
one
day...
but
I
hope
I
can
get
many
more
pleasurable
miles
from
it
before
it
goes
to
the
cycle
graveyard.
