The remains of the SS Great Easternā€™s launch ramp. The ship was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to carry passengers and cargo between England and Australia. It was launched in 1858. The SS Great Eastern was the largest ship in the world at that time and it was constructed almost entirely of metal. It took 3 attempts attempts to get the ship into the water. There is an old informative panel but you canā€™t read anything.

Very interesting history, but the information plaque at the site is so badly faded you cannot read it. You have to know what the history is before you visit or go with a tour guide.

I love this peaceful place. Adding history, It has a very calm place. I love to visit very frequently. You can see so many lovely pets fetching and playing. When just admiring nature, pets, and the river will ease your stress, and will forget the time passing by.

Nice for kids to walk around and learn a bit of history. Just need to be careful as easy for young kids to get injured.

Opposite Masthouse pier. You can view this site then take a glorious walk beside the Thames where the light can be phenomenal. Cormorants sit on the pier posts and the light bounces off Greenwich maritime museum and park opposite. Meander down to the Thai and sit outside enjoying a refreshing Mocktail before walking further along to Island gardens with spectacular views, followed by exploring the Greenwich foot tunnel and surfacing into Greenwich, the Cutty Sark, markets and more eateries than you can shake a stick at šŸ¤

Fantastic piece of history and well laid out. Could do with more information boards on a walk round

Itā€™s a collection of wood thatā€™s believed to be the slipway for the SS Great Eastern but the info boards are faded so much you canā€™t read anything on them and thereā€™s nothing here other than the wood and the view of the river.

Just blocks of wood lying around , historical description of the place is missing from sight board so hard to guess what it was before and what's the historical meaning. Other then that good place to have a rest on the grass.

Nice place with an amazing view towards Greenwich. The ramp itself puts your imagination to work and reading the poster makes you understand the story behind.

A really interesting place to visit, and the remaining slipway timbers and rails have been well maintained. The launch site is located just opposite the Malthouse Terrace Pier (serviced by Thames Clipper boats). The information board has also recently been updated by Tower Hamlets Council and makes for an interesting read. Work began on the SS Great Eastern in the spring of 1854 and was completed by November 1857. It was planned that the ship was to be launched sideways into the Thames as it was too long for a conventional launch. To support this sideways launch, Brunel had ordered the construction of two slipways into the Thames which would support the Great Eastern into the water, though it actually took four attempts and three months to finally get the ship, constructed almost entirely out of metal, into the water.

As an absolute geek when it comes to ocean liners, this was amazing.
