I was very excited to go to Bake & Broil because of all the recommendations from LB Food Scene. I was even more excited to see a lot of people waiting to be seated, that a good sign! I didn't have to wait long because I was by myself so I could sit at the counter instead of a booth. The young lady that took my drink order was very nice and the young man that took my food order was just as pleasant, both extended excellent customer service! I started with French Onion soup, I've had better but it was satisfying on a chilly day! I wanted something savory so I ordered the Chicken Pot pie. I knew when he sat it down, it wasn't going to be good. The broth and crust was VERY bland, even after adding salt and pepper. There was hardly any vegetables and the chicken itself was very bland. Because of their great customer service, I didn't want to return it, but after a couple of bites, I couldn't eat anymore. I wanted to return it and I asked the waitress for another menu so I could try something else instead. Andy (Owner) comes up to me very loud and said, "What's wrong with it?" Now mind you, I'm at the counter and everybody is looking because he made such a big deal about me returning the food. He said loudly, "You're going to pay for it!" I said, "fine!". After sitting for a minute embarrassed and mad that I paid $15.38 for a very small cup of soup. I went up to him and asked why he wouldn't return my money. With a very red face he said, "We sale thousands of these, I'm not going to just throw it away!" Mind you, he never DID ANYTHING OR SAY ANYTHING to help me enjoy my first time being there. He was very condescending and very angry. I remained calm until the end when I asked him his name, he in returned asked me mine, I said, "fu"! I can't say he is racist, but I guarantee a 58 year old White woman wouldn't have been treated like I was!

Family owned and operated since 1965 Jongewaard's Bake n’ Broil is as close as it gets to “iconic” in Long Beach, many of Carol Jongewaard’s recipes even now in use across a menu featuring Comfort Food still sold at a reasonable price. Brought to Atlantic Avenue by Carol and husband Roger, their children still in charge and Restaurant staff partially unchanged for three decades, guests arriving at Bake n’ Broil begin by putting their names on a waitlist, tables available within twenty minutes for most while others whiz in and out for Pastries available at the counter. Open from 8:00am until 3:00pm daily, most of the savories unavailable until 11:00am, Coffee should be a pass for all but those willing to tolerate acrid drip while menu-advertised Skim Milk was apparently unavailable at 8:45 on a Saturday. Known primarily as a Bakery, specials joining the daily offerings based on season, it was after a quick stop in the Microwave that two Muffins and a Cinnamon Roll were delivered, each with a ball of chilled Butter that proves necessary for moistening both of the former and all but the center of a glazed spiral. Less sweet than usual across Carrot Cake as well as Pecan Pie, though in the case of the latter an inspired choice that ranks amongst the best of its kind, Quiche falls short due to insipid Crust plus a laughable side of flavorless Fruit while “Banana Walnut Pancakes” incorporate neither into the Batter and tries to sell Artificial Maple Syrup as acceptable by placing alongside a mountain of Whip.

I freaking love this place. I've been coming here for YEARS - not as often as I would like, but still, taking into account that I live in Anaheim that's something. I always get the 1/2 sandwich, 1/2 salad + dessert special. And it's always with the half turkey (that cranberry sauce tho). The desserts are always hard to pick! But I've tried their coconut pineapple cake (amazing), carrot cake (also really good - very dense tho), raspberry peach pie, and German apple cake. I've never been disappointed. I recently went on a Saturday at around 11:30am, and it was unsurprisingly pretty busy. We waited about 20-30min for a party of 3. To add, their servers have always been really friendly and attentive.

Very nice place to have breakfast, the place is super clean with an old fashion look and feel. The servers are very attentive and the food is top notch. I will be back and bring back more people with me. The hash browns and cut larger than traditional hash browns and very good.

This place is really solid for breakfast. Love the food and the service. At the time of this posting (with current COVID restrictions) there isn't any dine-in seating yet and you must order at the counter before sitting at a table to eat. The line usually looks long (cuz the food's good) but it moves quicker than you would think. I usually come here on Saturdays (my cheat day) and load up on all the best unhealthy things, and so far I've loved everything. They have a lemon blueberry pancake that is awesome. Their muffins are always fresh too and they change regularly which is fun. The only downside to this place in my opinion is the location. One side of the outdoor dining area is right on a very busy street so occasionally you'll get super loud annoying trucks and cars speeding by, which is disturbing when you're just trying to enjoy a quiet breakfast and cup of coffee. Also, that side is right where the sun rises and there's not a lot of shade. If you can, get a table on the other side where there's more shade and it's a little quieter.

This is an excellent breakfast/lunch spot in Long Beach. Very popular, and deservedly so! I had fresh strawberry pancakes as part of a combination breakfast with eggs and sausage. The pancakes were light and perfectly cooked, with crispy edges and a fluffy soft center. The pancakes were topped with a large helping of strawberries and the optional whipped cream. The berries were delicious, and sweet enough so the maple syrup could be used sparingly. The sausages were of good quality, and the eggs (I had mine over medium) were as ordered.

My brother took us here this weekend and wow. This was the best American breakfast food I’ve had in a while! The pancakes were fluffy and flavorful. I loved that the veggie omelette had a creamy avocado in it. The blueberry muffin was perfectly moist on the inside, crisp on the outside. It had a home-y, friendly diner atmosphere and our waiter was great! Would recommend 100%. Can’t wait to eat here again when we’re in town.

I feel like I ordered the wrong thing — I had good expectations and I’m sure their foods are deserving of four - five stars but I ordered the sourdough sandwich thinking it was going to be a sandwich not a grilled cheese type of styled sandwich. It was average for me — the sourdough was okay, the turkey was okay too; I didn’t like the texture and it was with melted cheddar cheese and tomatoe slices. though I had it with fries on the side - which were good, I liked the fries and my friend enjoyed her burger. I wish I ordered something different because the sandwich was disappointing (mainly because I didn’t understand they said it would be a grilled sandwich) but if you like grilled cheese this will be a good sandwich for you. I wanted an actual sandwich or a toasted sandwich with lettuce in it, maybe like a turkey and avocado club etc. The sourdough was okay. But the customer service was good, the staff was friendly and the desserts seemed great. Probably would come back again to try their other menu items!

One of those places I can't say enough about. And I kinda don't want to, cuz it's already crazy busy. I'm glad they did well during the pandemic. Food, drinks, baked goods, staff, layout, design, bathrooms; all of it is done very well. Currently no outdoor seating. Only thing that has been subpar is the fruit salad option w/ the quiche. It's mostly apples n oranges, n not terribly tasty at that. The quiche itself was flaky, balanced, flavorful, and a good portion. When they say banana pancakes, they mean BANANAS. Not 4 meager slices. You know it's all good when no one wants to share their meal. All the muffins are downright fun in flavor, and of the soft fluffy variety rather then oily and dense. Lemonade is from scratch, which makes for great arnold palmers

One of my favorite breakfast spots in town. This place gets pretty busy in the morning/lunch time. I've been coming here for years. The seasoned hash browns are my favorite. Quality food and service.

Yum, yum, yummmmm. There’s a reason they’re busy on a Wednesday. Their roast beef on sourdough was incredible. Good hearty chili as well. The showstopper was the lush lemon pie. Thanks Fiona, everything was perfect!

Great cafe known for their chicken pot pies and pastries. Food is good, but they tend to under season with their older demographic. Service is always great. Had their huevos ranchero and it was ok. Been coming here for years and will continue to support this local spot.

If you plan to dine in, be prepared to wait. This place is incredibly popular. We ordered take out the last time we were there. We ordered several chicken pot pies. A few were frozen for later. If you like chicken pot pie, be prepared for your taste buds to be blown. The gravy in the pie alone would hold its own as a hearty soup. The chicken is delicious and the crust is something else. If you're a fan of lemon merengue pie, get there early, because they sell out of them fast.

Only street parking. The service was fantastic! The food was so good, truly enjoyed the flavors perfectly combined and the salsa was so yummy, specially over the home hash-brown! We also ordered a blueberry lemon pancake, it was so fluffy, not too sweet, well balanced

I love their blueberry muffins. I wanted to try their pumpkins and banana pancakes next time. We had the chicken fried steak breakfast and it was huge but tasty. The huevos rancheros and breakfast burrito were okay, the tomatoes sauce didn’t have much seasoning to it but I understand this is not a Mexican restaurant… so it was okay. Next time we will try something else the wait was about 20 minutes on a Monday. About $70 for 3.

It's busy on the weekend. People write their names on the list. They can accommodate gluten free but not officially on the menu so not gluten free bread. It's not small but rectangular and seating is somewhat limited. Street parking. The service and food is good and the price is average.

“GO FOR THE PIES!” We went on a Tuesday around 11am, it was busy and they had about a 20 to 30min wait for a table so we decided to go for the “first come first serve” counter seating. We shared a bowl of their Soup of the Day, Tomato Basil with Cornbread and it came fast, hot and delicious! We ordered the Lemon Blueberry Pancakes with Raspberry Sauce and the Tomato Basil and Jack omelette and both were just ok…they also took a long time to serve…the Pancakes were really just Blueberry pancakes no lemon flavor at all and the raspberry sauce fell short on the raspberries. The breakfast potatoes were supposed to be seasoned but tasted super plain and the omelette was just ok. Now the Pies, WOW!, what a treat! We had the Lemon Merengue and the Apricot Pie and they were Amazing! Also met a regular client sitting next to us, she said she has been a patron since 1965!!

1st time and it was excellent, the waitress was great and prompt, coffee was just ok. The breakfast plates are good, the hash browns kinda suck. Parking is a drag also. The atmosphere is chill.
