Before preparing my meal, one of the employees hands me Matbucha (Tomatoes, Garlic, and maybe other ingredients), and Green Rice (Lemon, Parsley, Chickpeas, and Garlic) to try: I like the tastes of both of them separately; the Matbucha I try is generally the way I like my tomatoes (if not fresh, straight out the fridge), and the Green Rice is flavorful as well as soft (as I remember the Chickpeas being). My main course, The Falafel Pita, is really filling, flavorful, and tasty: I prefer eating Falafel this way. The fries are good too though maybe serving them in aluminum foil might help them maintain their crisp (or cooking them with less oil/longer, not really greasy, just prefer crispy fries). All of the meal options I mention taste really good without any sauce. Of the sauces, I like the Red Shatta because I like spicy sauces, it's spicier than flavorful which I don't mind since the food already is flavorful, and juicy. The Amba Yellow and Sesame Tahini taste really good. I prefer the Red Shatta on the Falafel Pita and the Amba Yellow with the fries. The customer service is really good: the employees are kind and patient.

Flavorful and fun! They make traditional falafel, but they also experiment with different flavors. Today they had a serrano one, red pepper one and a cinnamon one! They offered samples too! They make the most out of their small space. I'd definitely go back.

As an Israeli that lives abroad, I’m always seeking to find a falafel place that has the “real thing”. Well, I found it! This is by far the best falafel I’ve eaten outside of Israel. It’s fresh and crispy outside and soft inside. Perfect! Try the different flavours and the sweet option too! I also REALLY recommend the Sabich. Yammmmmy. Kudos, we will definitely come back.

Fresh pita bread. Gluten free options (no pita so bowl or cone options). Great falafel really fresh stuff. Very nice people as well. If I lived closer I would be there all the time. And last but not least amazingly good sauces.

Great spot for a quick falafel sandwich. It's an all vegan place which offers falafel sandwiches and fries. The falafel sandwich is a filling portion and would have been enough for me. I did not needed the fries I also ordered. The place has interesting sauce varieties to add to your sandwich or dip your fries in. One of them is a mango vinegar sauce. They also feature a chocolate chip cookie made out of chickpeas. Their place is very small and there is limited seating outside, 2 tables with 4 chairs each. It's a great place to pick up some delicious to go food to enjoy at home, while browsing through 4th street, or to take with you to the arts theater, which is right next to it, and enjoy while watching a movie, if they allow you to bring it in.

That’s a joke to call that pitta with lettuce “Sabich”. we didn’t expect to get an original sabich but at least something close. We got this joke for 15$ and that’s definitely a waste of money. the most important ingredient for sabich is the eggplant. Me and my wife order both sabich and both of us got even one eggplant. When we ask the lady ( she was really nice ) about that, she told us that she’s sorry but they’re out of eggplant. ( Oh ok so just let’s fill it with lettuce instead ) Also the Malabi supposed to be sweet and not sour. Bottom line - the place have potential, and I don’t care about the price if that’s worth it - but I can’t believe that I paid 35$ for 2 pitas with lettuce.

Very good and very fresh. I was pleasantly surprised. The falafel is high quality - it isn’t that dry hard falafel that so many places serve. They also don’t skimp at all on amount. The falafel pita was very filling.

I’m not a vegan, but a good friend suggested it and Im open to all types of food so why not. Fed 3 people for under $50, and its the only vegan meal I’ve ever eaten that didn’t feel like a compromise. I’d eat here again for sure. Outside seating only, food made fresh for you, so expect to wait 10 minutes or so.

Falafel tastes okay, I think it could use a little more salt and more of the spices. Parking is a mess around this area.

The HipPea is a delicious place to get your next amazing meal. The restaurant may come in a small package, but the falafel is out of this world! You will not be disappointed by this terrific, well kept secret!

Bear falafel sandwich ever. Best pita bread I’ve had in my life - it has the most delightful spongey texture and doesn’t fall apart. The hummus is great and the mango sauce is delicious. Also it is packed to the brim, so it actually is worth the price. The woman who owns this place is always so wonderful to interact with. Wish I could rate this even higher.

We were welcomed with a sample of two different falafels - regular and barbecue. Later they brought us a sample of Churro falafels, 4 pieces. So generous! I would never imagine falafel as a desert, such a unique flavor, but a little sweet to my taste. Everything we have ordered was super yummy. Both bowl and pita were filled with delicious veggies. The pita bread was fresh and fluffy. Falafels absolutely one of the best I've ever had.

Overpriced for what you get, ordered a falafel combos which comes with fries and and purchased a large hummus. The falafel was over dry. Normally when you buy a side order of hummus you normally get a pita bread or two to eat it with, not here even when you ask for it they said no.

Magical. One of the city’s best businesses and not well-enough known. They always offer a sample of that day’s special, so sometimes you get to try whatever the imagination brought forward! Pickled onions are a must and try ALL the sauces for a culinary lift to your meal. I’ve eaten there for years (but not often, I admit bc: fried) and each visit reminds me that I need to spread the word better. French fries in your pita/falafel sandywich? Yes, please. She’s got a good thing going, here!

Whether you’re vegan or not, The HipPea is SO delicious and affordable. It’s also in a great location with interesting shops and The Bluffs nearby.

Falafel was very good. Was missing some additional items in the pita (hummus, fries, schug, tahini,, etc) to make it perfect.

The best falafel in the west!! The falafel balls are exactly how it should be, the pita is so fresh and hummus/Tahini is delicious. I’ll be back…

OMG. This place is UNREAL. Hands down the best falafel sandwich I've ever had. I was in sheer heaven. I round make the trip in LA traffic all the way back down to Long Beach just to eat it again. I don't know what they do to make it so good, but, WOW. My only complaint is that we were one of only 4 people there and it took FOREVER for our food to come out, but luckily it was worth the wait and the staff was very friendly. Keep it up, guys! This is vegan heaven!

Everything is amazing. Owner is delightful, team is usually outstanding. Recommend the hummus and fries pita with everything, plus tahini and the picked mango sauce! New parklet is sweet and don't forget a glass of wine or beer nextdoor atvArt du Vin 😉 Street parking can be a challenge but city parking lot across the street. Follow them on social for the 50¢ falafel deals!

Amazing staff, great falafels. Who knew BBQ and Green Rice on falafels is where it’s at. I’m always happy when I stop by the Hippea. Thank you for all that you do!

  • 5/5 James K. 1 year ago on Google
Oh Hippea, how do I love thee? With plenty of the yellow sauce and turnips. I haven’t been here in probably two years and I just got misty eyed after inhaling an indie box. I was so happy to discover that nothing has changed. Everything is so fresh and delicious and perfectly prepared. All the flavors are the same and the staff was just as friendly and inviting as I remember.
