A museum well worth visiting.Unfortunately, We only arrived an hour before it closed the door, and we didn't see it completely at all. Must go again next time. Take the children to broaden their horizons, and the museum is free.´・ᴗ・`

Last time I went here I was at school.. many years ago, this place has changed drastically and is far better for it. Firstly it's free, so there's really no reason not to go, even if you don't like it you've not lost anything. The museum staff are very helpful, friendly and approachable, they're happy to help and advise not only on the museum but other interesting places to visit in Derby. The displays are modern and interesting with some items in the open and others with signs encouraging interaction. The room displaying the history of Derby is in all honesty amazing, who would of thought that all those objects were found in the city....makes you wonder what else is buried under our feet. There's also objects from across the globe including the Americas, Egypt, South Africa, the Middle East, Australia, Asia and the Far East. There's also a world class collection of paintings by Derby's Joseph Wright. Absolutely superb, definitely worth visiting.

My son asked specifically to see the mummies but was completely blown away by the natural history hall. Full of fantastic fossils. Amazing museum in derby, would definitely recommend.

Just completed The Ram Trail. What a wonderful time. Great day out for Old and Young alike . You can walk as far as you want or as little. Plan your route and see more. We managed 27 out the 30. Coffee and cake, lunch or even a picnic to reduce the cost .

Having been to Derby and only going shopping or out to the restaurant been passed the Derby Museum & Art Gallery looking at the outside it looks like a small Museum but when entering the property it lot more. Bigger than in size, I was very impressed with the size of the Museum loads of interesting, different features, vikings, and military history, plus other parts of the world culture history .I would recommend that you visit the Derby Museum and Art.

Worth a visit with many different artifacts from around the world. The Joseph Wright Exhibition was a highlight, though the gallery has several fabulous pieces permanently in situ too. A little heavy on the anti-British Empire stance, which is a tad disappointing. Its a museum, which always used to be there to display history, not give its own warped, anachronistic slant but I've seen worse things foisted on the general public, so if you can happily roll your eyes to yourself whilst enjoying the overall experience, don't miss out.

Loved it at this museum. Took my 2, 4 and 6 year olds and they enjoyed it too. There is a play area on the top floor which had Aircon which was very welcome when we went on the hottest day of the year. Loads to look at and the cafe is very lovely too with very good coffee.

So, what of the city Museum and Art Gallery? It's pretty good for three prime reasons. Forget the natural history collection; forget the World Culture exhibits; forget the role of the Derbyshire regiments in the fights of empire around the world. No, instead, my attention was concentrated on three other specific rooms. First up, ceramics: plenty of display cases full of beautiful Royal Crown Derby pottery, going all the way back to the eighteenth century. Second: archaeology. Marvel at the Hanson Log Boat, a Bronze Age craft over 3500 years old. It's an amazing ten metres long, was found in a gravel quarry at Shardlow (just south of Derby) and was transporting pieces of stone. Then there's a good selection of Roman lead items, mined up in the Peak District. That was followed by St Alkmund's astounding sarcophagus, found beneath St Alkmund's Church. He died around 800AD. The next pic shows part of the sculptured St Alkmund's Cross of around fifty years later. Third: art. As Joshua Reynolds is to Plymouth, Joseph Wright is to Derby. And Derby Museum & Art Gallery (unlike Plymouth) has a whole gallery devoted to this amazing artist. There was much on which to feast the eyes, from his portraits of early industrialists like Richard Arkwright, through his wanderings in Italy, and on to his amazing renditions of night-time scientific experiments. Simply fantastic!

The museum is beautiful. It has ground floor and 2 other floors, it also has a lift. There was no tour guide. However, you could move around freely and see all that is there. I liked it.

Have been coming here as a child and now regularly bring my own kids. Seemed to have more exhibitions when I was younger as I recall a space area and one with animals and plants. Nevertheless kids love it. Perfect for a budget day out.

Fascinating place with interesting exhibits in the museum, including a boat from 3,500 years ago. Also the Joseph Wright exhibition was interesting with other artworks of interest. We have taken the grandchildren to events there in the past and recommend keeping an eye open for future events. And it's all free!

I especially liked the art gallery section, with works by Joseph Wright of Derby. I would recommend spending at least an hour here to look around. Gift shop included.

It seems like a small local museum, but much bigger inside. It tries to be everything that is important to local education, but I am not sure taxidermied animals are important in this internet user century. On the other hand, the archaeology, architecture, and thematic collections are great. The Joseph Wright room is fantastic, and the description around is great.

Visited as the William Hogarth exhibition was running. That exhibition was superb but also had time to look at the rest of the art gallery and museum. We were impressed by the content, variation and quality of exhibits on show throughout. So worth visiting - thankyou.

First time I've took these two to a museum, they seemed to enjoy it, bit young to understand everything, but they seemed pretty amazed.

We visited recently and were extremely impressed by the whole experience. The staff were professional and knowledgeable and the exhibits were extensive. The Quentin Blake galleries were fantastic, an altogether enjoyable visit, thank you, and the coffee in the cafe was superb, would certainly recommend.

The Joseph Wright art gallery was a fascinating sight, I didn't want to leave. The attendants were very friendly and ready to assist by showing you round, the war artillery was another wonderful sight. A very clean and neatly arranged works of art.

I often come to the Museum. Joseph Wright Gallery, he's one of my favourite artists. There's the natural history display, which is interesting to animals & insects I like the Egyptian mummy. The military display is interesting too. Its well worth a visit, there's a lot more to see than what I've mentioned

A great museum and art gallery which is free to visit. Different exhibitions throughout the year and permanent exhibits on display in different galleries too. The museum covers the history of Derby and the local area from it's earliest days up and until the present day. We have visited numerous times over the years and have found something new to look at every time. The museum is run by volunteers and relies on grants and donations to keep open. So, any donation no matter how small is very welcome.

Lovely staff on hand on arrival and throughout. Plenty of items to look at, especially archaeology from the local area, it's fantastic and mind-blowing that people have been living where you live for thousands of years. Great for children. My son loves the curio cabinets with fossils and rocks and also the musical instruments. Really worth a visit.

Visited today, 23 June 2023, not been for about 20 years. What an enjoyable experience. Staff were so welcoming and helpful. The museum is clean and the artifices well laid out with lots of interesting and useful information. A great place to spend a couple of hours and learn about our city and its past. Didn’t visit the cafe so cannot comment.

I have taken my adult students a couple of times and they always love it. There is now a great exhibition about women history makers. I met the artist by chance before going in and we were all very impressed. Well done.

Night after night, Wright of Derby features on our local BBC's news programme - in particular "The Orrery". In a quiet hour the other day I ventured into the museum for the first time since the Pandemic started. I had forgotten what a stunning painter he was, and the Derby collection of his paintings is stunning, worth visiting for these alone, excellent exposition of his life and work and his place in society at a time when this small provincial town led the world in philosophy, manufacturing, the arts and science, the epicentre of the industrial Revolution. In addition there are lots of other fascinating exhibits dealing with prehistory, the Roman origin of Derventio, ceramics, and other artists and the military history of the area

Without a doubt worth a visit. In my experience very little has ever changed between visits, but I've usually forgotten just enough to completely justify going again. A super eclectic collection of art, taxidermy, and historic artifacts that are never quite woven into an experience greater than the sum of its parts.

  • 5/5 Gregor S. 2 years ago on Google
A good museum to visit. We are lucky in the UK to have free museums and it is well worth a visit. An eclectic mix of exhibits and something for everyone. The paintings were good although I would say the lighting in the gallery is badly installed and some painting are hard to see due to reflections. There is a cafe. The museum entrance doesn't look big but there are quite a few exhibition spaces upstairs and further inside.

Brilliant museum. Well detailed information. Has a coffee bar but we didn't visit. Passed at least 2 hours here with a 14 year old! Free however donations are welcome but certainly no obligation. Parking, paid, close by.

Was here for our Christmas party. Generally very pleasant, food was nice, only thing really letting them down was the unpleasant manner in which they asked us to leave at the end of the day. There was no pleasant comment over the disco etc they just shut it off and the bouncer told us to go in a very abrupt manner
