Great food, great people. Lovely clean and cosy environment. If you stay for more than a single night, do ask for the South African options for breakfast - even if they don't appear on the menu! The landlady is charm itself and the landlord loves to cook and eat! So it's up a slight hill. But then so are most of the attractions of Matlock.

Incredible, absolutely incredible! The best B&B I have ever stayed in. Myself and my partner arrived to an incredibly warm welcome from Anne, and a rich atmosphere especially on the walls of family adventures and culture that embraces you. When we checked into our room for 2 nights we were absolutely delighted. It was a room filled with all of the right sized furniture and aesthetic, and out of the bright window, a lovely view of Matlock. The ensuite was very pleasent too, ready for a good shower even after a good long hike. The Room, 10/10 The garden I want to rate on a separate note. Me and my partner took a stroll in what was a garden ready to burst into life in the early stages of Spring. The design of the garden was well presented and it takes you on a journey, especially if you're a garden lover. The garden is beautiful and the layout surprises you at every turn in a positive way. The standout feature in the garden, what I believe is a Ribes sanguineum (the redflower currant tree) that hangs on the starting lawn from your first steps outside, it's a magical sight. The Garden, 10/10 And finally the breakfast. Wow! The breakfast I am speechless. I had Anne & John's beautiful South African breakfast two days in a row. I won't spoil the surprise if someone hasn't mentioned it on here, but the taste is exquisite, the overall experience at breakfast was fantastic. The Breakfast, 10/10 Though the ratings I have given seem extremely high, I promise our expectations were blown away. Me and my partner hope to return in the Summer and also see the garden in full bloom! For what was a 35th Birthday surprise vacation, it was an experience to remember for all the right reasons with Anne & John and their beautiful B&B. A big thank you from Natalie & Adam 🥰

What an amazing b & b Ellen house at Matlock is. John and Anne, the owners, have a wonderful friendly attitude towards their guests. They take time to get to know you and you’re left with a feeling that you’re part of the family. The rooms are lovely, very bright and airy and the little extras are second to none. John cooks beautiful breakfasts with an amazing choice which sets you up for the day. We really enjoyed chatting about their lives in South Africa with some really amusing anecdotes. Would definitely recommend this little gem of a place. Nigel and Cath Perry.

Easily the best B&B we've set foot in! Anne and John were the perfect hosts. It's almost like they want to leave nothing to chance. An abundance of toiletries, more than enough refreshments and even home baked cookies each day. The breakfast cooked by John was a three course meal and he came to the dining room to check that the poached egg was perfect. I also found the conversation about their lives in South Africa very interesting...no small talk here. A genuine, lovely couple who make you feel welcome right from the start of your stay. The B&B is also in a perfect position, tucked away but close to the town centre. We're booking soon for the Christmas Victorian Market.

Absolutely beautiful! Perfect location for lovely walks. Clean, comfortable, welcoming and the most delicious breakfasts with the addition of poached pears, fresh fruit, homemade jam and marmalade. Nothing is a trouble. I'm looking forward to my return visit.

Highly recommended! We recently stayed for 6 nights and loved every minute, the B&B is immaculate, warm and cosy and Ann and John are wonderful hosts, they couldn’t do enough for us. The breakfasts are amazing, didn’t quite try out the whole menu but the full English, omelettes, eggs benedict, mushrooms on toast and traditional South African mince were all delicious, we would definitely stay here again.

Wonderful B&B....we usually stay in hotels and have variable experiences, there was nothing to fault with our stay, the room was very clean, well equipped and nicely decorated with unique features that made the stay home from home. The breakfast was amazing.....you have to try it to appreciate the quality. Combined with friendly hosts, use of a beautiful garden with lovely views and great location it's perfect.

We have just had a wonderful stay at Ellen House. What a lovely place to stay. We were really well looked after by Anne and John, they are lovely people & wonderful hosts. The service was absolutely outstanding, the rooms are spotlessly clean and very nice. Plus there is a lovely garden/patio and gazebo just outside the rooms which we really enjoyed sitting in. The breakfast is first class. We will definitely be staying again. The location is lovely and very handy for everything too !! Highly recommended Thankyou, Stephen & Suzanne Stephen & Ros

I stayed in Ellen House for a few days in March, and it was a fantastic getaway from the noise and the pace of a big city. Anne and John went above and beyond to make sure my stay was enjoyable, they are incredible hosts that make you really feel at home. The rooms are very clean and comfortable; I had the room with the bath tub, and it was a delightful experience. And the breakfasts – my goodness, they were sooo good! Absolutely loved this stay.

I'd come here again. Stayed overnight as I was working nearby. Very friendly owners, great breakfast, massive comfy bed. They even sent me on my way with home made biscuits. Thank you!
