Finally had an opportunity to visit Tilbury Fort, as the previous attempt I'd got the days wrong and turned up when they were closed that day... D'oh! An impressive slice of defective history, and a design that was most effective... Be warned, there's a lot to explore outside, and little indoor exhibits, so choose a day that is going to be dry...

This is a lovely gem. We went on a Friday and it was really peaceful. We took a picnic and ate it on the benches and if we had brought out blanket we would have eaten it on a grassy bank. Plenty of space for the kids to run around, toilets were clean, staff friendly and the site was full of history. We bought the guide which helped with some background to the site and was a bargain at £3.50. Would definitely recommend a visit. We spent about 1 hour 40 minutes there. Make sure you go when it's not rainy as the majority of the site is outdoors.

This site covers a good area but there is not much to see. There is an exhibition in one hall. A parade ground and walking around the gun emplacements. Parking right outside.

Tilbury fort is part of English Heritage. I definitely enjoyed the visit. Big open area to walk around. My favourite part was the the tunnels. Staff were really friendly and helpful. If you are visiting with kids they will certainly have enough space to run around and explore the fort. Free parking on site.

Spent over 2 hours here on a wet January day. Imagine would be better in the sun. No cafe but the World's End pub 200 yards away and also a walk along river front.

Initially went as the site has been used in many film/TV productions, might be off the beaten track but worth a visit. It's a fairly large site and only a few of the buildings remain but still enough to look around and learn. It's placed right next to the mouth of the Thames and has been there since the 16th century. You can see how the site has evolved over the years and has some interesting facts spread around the site. There are various retired guns around the fort to keep kids entertained, but to be honest there isn't much for the younger ones. All the staff were extremely friendly, and even the isolated location made it worth a visit.

I've been wanting to visit Tilbury fort for a long time, finally I made it, I'm not disappointed, the facilities are minimal but sufficient, you can get a hot drink but no food, luckily I had a packed lunch, so would advise the same, the sight is extensive on a par with fort George in Scotland, Tilbury fort has a significant impact through the ages for the security of the river Thames, there are many exhibits of artillery piece's on display, some are easy too identify like the 25 pounder and limber as used in many theatres of conflict in WW2 even though the othe artillery piece's aren't labelled they are of interest non the less. Highly recommend a visit.

Very interesting place even in the rain. Lots of places to explore and really enjoyed going down the underground tunnels. I think I chose a good time and day (Friday at 10:30) as I was the only person there so had it all to myself !! I would definitely recommend a visit.

I couldn't recommend it too highly. There are ramparts to climb, artillery pieces to observe and pretend to fire and lots of things to read and hear about. This isolated fortress protected London; soldiers defended it living in primitive conditions while their officers had a good time living in Gravesend (across the Thames). The views across the river are excellent, with plenty of ships to watch as they ply their trade.

Not very lucky with the weather, but the trip to Tilbury Fort was worth it. Plenty to explore and learn about history of this place. Great views from the top. Little one loved the cannons and the tunnels. A bit spooky!

Being part of English Heritage its free for members and is certainly worth a visit The Fort is located on the Thames Estuary and is easily accessible by road and offers free parking.

Well worth a visit, very interesting visit. Do have a few questions because I would like to know more.

A good place to go for a short hour or so visit when heading out of London. (note there is not much close around the fort kind of off the beaten track). Decided to visit Tilbury Fort because its part of the English Heritage (membership). It may seem small and underwhelming from the outside. However when you get in to the fort and get on to some of the high points it does look much better. It is fairly basic in terms of the amount of things to see but there are maintained to a reasonable manner. (Honest opinion they could have put more props to help peoples imaginations better) There is a free audio guide, however kind of pointless when you have a 5 & 7 year old wanting to just leg it around the fort. The grounds (green areas) are well kept so we decided to have our pack lunch on the grounds during the beautiful spring weather.

We had fun exploring this place. There’s no cafe but there’s picnic benches.

Good place to spent one evening with FnF to enjoy the nice breeze over The Thams and also enjoy the nice view. Kids can run in the open space and learn some history.

Really loved visiting the Fort on a Sunday afternoon in glorious weather. Really well kept place and staff were brilliant, admittedly could have been slightly more to see in way of exhibitions but on whole really lovely place

Lovely place to visit along the Thames. Friendly staff and fantastic views. A must visit for all the family especially the kids during the holidays to get them out!

Its OK for a short time but there isn't much to see. Probably great with small children as there are lots of places to run around and play war. Several places that you need to keep an eye on the kids as many long drops. Staff are friendly and helpful

Nice quiet place to visit for about an hour. Interesting building and nice new exhibition. Possibly the dirtiest English Heritage site toilets I've had the displeasure of visiting though. Sadly no tea room due to low visitor numbers I was told.

A well preserved and historical fort protecting the mouth of the river Thames. One of several forts in the area. There’s history here spanning napoleon era to WW2. There is a small free car park out front. The place is now run but English heritage. You’ll notice a complete lack of entry prices listed out front or anywhere at all. It’s only when you reach the ticket desk to they tell you it’ll be £25.90 for a family of 4 to take a look around. Crazy high price for what it is!

A great day out, with interesting history and excellent views. The fort has a large amount of signs and things to read as you walk around the site (and into the tunnels!). You can also buy a guide for a small additional fee if you want. It’s a really interesting day out, with the fort being around in some shape or form since Henry VIII’s time. It’s been designed to protect London by defending the Thames passage, and there are great views over the river (and above), with its distinctive diamond shape. It wasn’t too busy when we went, though be aware the car park is a bit on the small side, and you need to drive through a pub’s car park to get to the fort’s one! It’s an English heritage site too, so if you go to more than a few EH places per year, it may be worth getting the annual pass. Overall, an interesting place where you can definitely spend a few hours learning about local history and watching the ships go by on the Thames.

Can't complain killed a few hours with the kids explored the Fort generally not a lot of information about the history of the Fort but still some interesting reads and some decent things to see, a few of the gun placements you can still move them on the swivel, nice little gift shop on site.

Very interesting & even better on a lovely sunny day. The man on the kiosk was very welcoming & knowledgeable. He even operated the coffee machine! One downside, no real cafe to have lunch. Loved the tunnels!
