THE OLDEST CHURCH IN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES Welcome to the San Miguel Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. San Miguel Chapel is known in Santa Fe simply as “The Oldest Church”, and it is referenced in Wikipedia as the oldest church in the continental United States. The chapel is located in the Barrio de Analco, a national historic district of Santa Fe. Oral history holds that the barrio was founded by a group of Mexican Indians from Tlaxcala. The adobe church was constructed under the direction of Franciscan friars to serve a small congregation of soldiers, laborers, and Indians who lived in the Barrio de Analco. It was partially destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. The present building dates from 1710, although it has undergone significant structural changes.

The San Miguel Church was an interesting mix of history, beautifully carved wood and artifacts from Spain which I am just amazed how they were transported back in those ages! The mud plaster is an interesting technique which one can see in ancient and middle-age buildings in Europe, which adds to the influence you can see brought over the ocean. It does amaze how such a simple technique (with some maintenance) can stand the elements and time. Also, the woodwork, which you can see throughout Santa Fe is just amazing. So wish we could have this level of craftsmanship in our homes today!!

Beautiful historical chapel. Well worth a detour if you're in Santa Fe. Curator is highly knowledgeable about the chapel and it's oral traditions going back centuries. Free admission but donations welcome.

The oldest church in the United States. This church is over 400 years old. New Mexico was founded back in the 1500’s when it was part of Spain. New Mexico was New Mexico before Mexico. New Mexico was named after a mountain range in Mexico. This church is cool. You can see the hay sticking of if the mud casing. The inside is sparsely decorated but beautiful. It has a “feel” to it of history. The church is not open on Saturdays and it’s hard to find parking. There is a small store next to the church that houses the oldest house in New Mexico, along with a decapitated skeleton still in its coffin. It’s a free must see. The store is good too.

It's only open 1-3pm on Monday, so we lost out. Limited information outside the Chapel. Was particularly interested in how they treated its destruction and rebuild during the Pueblo Revolt

Architecturally, sedate. The original chapel is early 17th century, with repairs and additions added throughout the centuries. The reredos dates to 1798, although it has undergone many alterations and additions. It was a ‘slow’ day when I visited, yet the exhibit space and the narthex area were a bit crowded due to the diminutive size of the chapel. The story about the indigenous laborers who built the original chapel is ambiguous: slave labor or not? The site upon which the chapel was built was an important site to the indigenous Puebloans.

Very beautiful adobe walls. You can feel the history as you walk through the chapel towards the altar. Do not forget to ring the bell to ensure you visit in the future!!

What very piece of history that is still around , the history behind this chapel is a worth looking into. The director of this place I didn't catch her name but as people waited to go inside and she open the doors she gave a small presentation about the call it was amazing to hear. Glad I stopped by

Went to their once a month mass, and it was absolutely awesome! I was surprised how few people were there, but happy to have a small intimate service.

We explored Sante Fe yesterday . We visited a 400 year old church and went inside to look around and say a few prayers. The narrow streets are oneway and are bordered with round edge Adobe walls that open into a maze of flat roof shops and restaurants The ambiance emits a sense of history to give verisimilitude to the aged town.

More than 400 years old church. The oldest church in the US. Still an active one today. The bell was from the mid-1300s. History right before your very eyes. Do visit and enjoy a moment of time travel back to pre-US times.

One of the oldest churches in US. Come close to the altar to see the original foundations circa 1610. Look up the roof beams dated 1710.

If you are in to history, you should visit the San Miguel chapel. It is the oldest church in the U.S.. You would think the oldest church would be on the east coast. Nope. It's right here in Santa Fe. Beautiful! It has a rich history both good and bad. Well worth the visit.

We really enjoyed our visit to the San Miguel Chapel. It's amazing that this church structure was built in 1610 and still survives today. Nestled in the heart of Old Town Albuquerque, you could drive by and nearly miss it with its unassuming architecture and surrounding businesses. The donations you can give at the front go to help maintain the structure. Highly recommended!
