wait, what do you mean “motor oil wings?!” 🍗 ⁣ ⁣ i know, the name is confusing, but hear me out. i’ve been sitting on this favorite of mine for a while but i’m ready to share it with you. ⁣ ⁣ i’ve been going to @rubbies1989 since i was in the womb. this spot is a southend institution. they’ve got character, family vibes, & most of all amazing food. ⁣ ⁣ so, back to the motor oil wings. i won’t lie, these are the only wings i will eat. the “motor oil” is the sauce they are drenched in, along with the sauce you dip them in. i wish i could explain it, but i can’t. all i can say is it’s DELISH. ⁣ ⁣ while i’m at rubbies, i can’t leave without getting their epic potato skins. i’ve seriously not had better ones anywhere else. they are unreal. ⁣ ⁣ also pictured here are their fried mozzarella sticks & hot brown - both which are also delicious. ⁣ ⁣ if you have read all this, then you know it’s time to head over to southside drive & experience this divine food yourselves.

A friendly little grill with several delicious dishes and VERY friendly staff. 5 stars for nearly all of our dishes - Onion peddle appetizer (such a huge portion it's no joke), potatoes skins (a bit odd having raw onions, but super crispy skin), and the reason we came - the HOT BROWN sandwich. This is a classic in Louisville and their version here was very good! Really that cheese sauce pulls it through and makes it. Last, we had their cookie dessert which easily is for two and is super gooey. The 4 stars really is because of one of our dishes - Their BBQ "Spicy" sandwich. For being ranked highly for their BBQ, this was a disappointment across the board. It basically had no flavor. Even the chips somehow were super bland and mostly just tasted like oil. Not sure how that happened as, and I mean this, everything else we had was delicious!

This place was AMAZING! It was recommended by one of my coworkers and we loved it. Great bourbon selections and a fun environment. We got the hot brown (which we were told was really good), the truffle fries, and the Texas brisket sandwich. Would highly recommend all those items as they left us very satisfied! Especially the truffle fries…best I’ve ever had!

Last night my husband and I came in to eat at the bar. Not only were we immediately treated like family but we had some of the best food I’ve EVER had. We ordered the spinach & artichoke appetizer - it was perfection. We then ordered the truffle fries, baked beans and Motor oil wings. I don’t know the last time I’ve tried to eat so much. The portions are amazing and the atmosphere was up lifting. I can’t wait to return and bring friends when they visit town.

Great food, a little pricey. The waitress will overcharge you if you don't check your ticket. I hate to have to say this but it happens every time we eat in there. And I love the food but money is tight. Come on, do better.

Great atmosphere for a casual meal. Food was good. Kitchen and or server were a bit off as we didn’t get the all the food we ordered and items were brought out very haphazardly.

Food was fantastic! Pleasantly surprised. Got a gourmet quality burger at a bar that looked a little run down and older, Service was outstanding! Don't let the age of the building or decor fool you! This place has class A food and service. Kudos to the chef....most impressive food!

First time visiting. Came mid-day. Not too busy. Great food. Great atmosphere. Super friendly bunch. We had the Mammoth Burger, Kentucky Hot Brown, motor oil chicken tenders, smoked chicken sandwiches, onion strings, west six amber Ale, iPad, walnut brown Ale, bourbon barrel, flights (Candy store tour, toasted barrel tour, & Duke walking dead)

I wish I could say I enjoyed my time here. My problem was much like everyone else’s. Understaffed, leading to a long wait time. I try to support local businesses in my area which makes what I’m going to say unfortunate as I wanted everything to be good. When I got my food it was very uncomfortable because I was the only one in the restaurant eating at that moment. Portions are absolutely enormous too. The burger I ordered was VERY well done to the point of being burned. Once I got home I was sick throughout the night, couldn’t hold down any water and ironically I got to taste my Rubbies again. Had to call out of work because I’m pretty sure it was food poisoning and had to sit on the toilet with a bucket in front of me. I’m not sure what they’re doing in the back but I hardly ever get sick and this knocked me out of action. Besides all that they were kind and polite. Probably wouldn’t eat here again unless the improve.

Wow. It's my 3rd time here 1st review... this place is much much more than barbecue! Today I had the fried fish - best fish in town! Better than Mike Linnigs, and definitely better prices. White linen table clothes and real silverware for $12pp. And, The cole slaw is the bomb. And, and, This place is an incredible museum for rock and roll and movie stars, come check it out it'll be worth it. prices awesome food incredible.

We came in town for the Jack-o-lantern spectacular on a Saturday night. Onion straws are really good. The liver is fantastic! I liked the fried chicken sandwich. Service was great also!!

I had read rave reviews about rubbies and decided to try. I don’t know if I built it up in my mind or not. The hot brown was good but I don’t know if it was any better than others I have had. My husband’s burger was just a burger not bad but not the best burger ever either. Apparently the Simon and Garfunkel fries were supposed to be great but I felt they were over cooked and even though they had tons of seasoning lacked taste. The waitress was really nice. I would eat there again if I was around the area but would not go out of my way to make a trip there and probably would not be a first choice

Great place. Great food. The chili cheese fries are one of my favorite foods in the world. My Dad loves the ribs & their chili. My Mom likes their fish. And I’m pretty sure they won best wings in the city over a wings exclusive place.

One of our all time favorites! It’s a fun, casual, family friendly place with one of the best Hotbrowns in the city! The burgers and pulled pork sandwiches are great too! The staff is friendly and down to earth. It’s just a great place to grab a bite to eat and make new friends. 10/10

We're here for a week long event and have eaten here twice. The food is good and the atmosphere is fun, but be prepared to wait for your food. Both nights it's taken 45 to 60 minutes to get the food out to us.

We went for dinner at 5:30 on a Tuesday and they were packed. They took great care of us and the food was delicious! The brisket was tender and juicy. My friend said the club was the best she ever had, others had the wings and raved about them. We will definitely be going back!! Good job !

I stopped here yesterday, it was my first time. Ordered the chicken dinner. I was told everything is from scratch but the green beans were definitely from the can. The waitress said they were not. The mashed potatoes had zero flavor. The gravy was on its way to being a chowder. I had read soo much about this place I wanted it to be amazing. But the drinks were just OK not great. The service was lacking. The kitchen produced two chicken dinners after 60+ mins. The AC unit leaked from the ceiling at the bar. The smoked wings, omg solid, but after spending $75. I wouldn't say I'd repeat this venture. The French fries come out piping hot but over cooked and burnt. Sighing.

Called ahead to make sure the kitchen was open late - they kept it going until 12am! Excellent BBQ and sides for a late night adventure, and a ton of local bourbon for dessert! Scott and Summer were holding it down and made our experience an excellent one. Highly recommend you swing through this joint!

This place is a hidden gem. I had an apartment out 3rd st. about 5 years ago, and I never knew about this place. So I go in today for lunch and it was great! The food was so good, the atmosphere and the waitress was amazing! I even got some food to go (I had to get some food for My Baby!) Needless to say I will definitely be back.

They seemed to be short staffed but the waitresses hustled and really took care of customers with pleasant attitudes. The food was out of this world! The burgers were cooked to perfection, and the brisket was the best I ever had. Highly recommend.

The BBQ at Rubbies has never disappointed. I think it is one of the best in Louisville. The last visit the food took a while to come out, otherwise I would have given 5 stars. Even with that, I would still highly recommend if you've never been.

OMG this place has the best burgers, salads & wings ever. Great value for your money. You won't be disappointed. Our group was celebrating a birthday. Loved the wings and cocktails too. They were so accommodating. Our waitress supper sweet and entertaining with her birthday dance Loved it!

I am from the east coast! Our food was ordered to go. Absolutely amazing! I got the Brisket sandwich...Friend got the ribeye! If I am ever back in the area I will go back again!

Nostalgic decor with great service. Food was phenomenal. Family of four (2 adults and 2 kids) with entrees and appetizer for less than $70 is a great deal. Onion strings are tremendous! Brisket sandwich and the motor oil sauce on wings are finger licking good.

3.5/5. I came in and was attended to quickly . Lady at bar was pleasant. I ordered smoke wings , a cheeseburger and fries. I thought this would be a bbq restaurant because that’s what I googled it but it’s actually a bar with plenty of seating inside and out. Food took around 40 minutes to get done and bagged for me. The burger was delicious (cheeseburger with pepper Jack cheese and lettuce only), the smoked wings had flavor. The fries disappointed. They came out looking fine but they were over cooked and felt like biting into a hard potato chip . Every bite turned to dust . I would try this place again . Has a decent menu but I would try to order something that seemed simple and fast next time to avoid a wait that long.

An absolute gem. The staff gave us exceptional service and the food was amazing in every way. We flew in from the west coast and arrived hungry after their kitchen officially closed and they still served us. The smoked wings everyone talks about really are worth the reputation. Do not miss if you are traveling. My friends and I will be back in October and this is our top recommendation for food.

Awesome place and excellent food. My first time there, the owner was there and recommend some items and the brisket sounded delicious and it was. Got treated like family and felt welcomed. I went my second time and was able to drink then (didn't have work that day) once again the food was awesome and everyone there, customers and workers treat you like they have known you for years. Highly recommend for food, drinks and great atmosphere.

A little dated and understaffed...but a really great hot brown...fried chicken is amazing...also a very reasonable and lengthy bourbon list staff is extremely helpful.

Food was delicious! We had the moto oil wings, the Texas brisket & the cod sandwich. I love how they are whole wings. And the motor oil sauce was amazing. The brisket was ao good and the cod was very delicious. We kind of had two different servers. The first one didn't even acknowledge us for like 20 minutes and we were debating on leaving. We FINALLY got our drinks and then waited a while for the food but it was hot and fresh. Then we got our second server for some reason .. but she was very nice and attentive. It wasn't a busy night so we were very confused and thought maybe it's because we had our baby.. but anyways all in all great food.

The best! Even though the establishment has a "For Hire" sign out front, and who doesn't now a days. I appreciate the ones who are there working even more. Because even though they are shorthanded, they still have the best food and we enjoy every visit. Thank you for great service and wonderful meal.❤
