This rating is based on the current situation with banning family from entering the ER. Look, I get it…we’re in a COVID world. That said, banning even vaccinated & masked folks from the protections of being indoors while family members are being treated is unacceptable. Zero places for most family members to sit. Tents that reek of cigarette smoke and zero security to fend off the homeless as they seek to take up residence in these same tents. Leaving discharged patients curbside unattended is truly maddening and heartbreaking. I can only hope the care inside is much better than the lack of compassion for worried or grieving family. Shame on you U of L. You can do better than this.

It was basically a horrible life time experience! I waited 10 hours before the ED doctor checked me. They just throw you in the waiting room and let you wait……wait…. and wait…. Nurses are not nice at all! Nothing is clean. Even when the nurse draw a blood sample she did not use alcohol prep pad! Patients beds are in the corridors! It was a nightmare! Better for you to die outside peacefully rather than coming here to get infected and tortured in this emergency room!

My cousin William Edelen was struck by a car on 9/9/22 and died on 9/24/22 here at this hospital. During these weeks not one family member was contacted. When we called looking for him we were told he wasn't there. They placed him to rest in a homeless cemetery. Shame on every single one of you.

The staff is caring and compassionate. When I ask questions they find the answers in a language I can understand. Has been great with my family!

Oof. Rough for patients. Dad in law's call light in Room 9 on floor one was not working and they didn't tell him. He tried 4 times until getting up himself as a fall risk because he couldn't reach assistance. They scolded him for it. House keeping is not on task, it's almost noon and food from 7am was still sitting. Just disappointed in the overall. The docs came in and sending him home with an "idk what caused it and IDK how your brain is doing since we can't see it (can't do MRI from having a pace maker). ...but we will get you home in an hour." What is this? Lol he has a buddy next to him who has a chatty nurse that hasn't really checked on him. Dirty sheets and sitting out food and drinks. They didn't give meds to my dad in law for two and a half days and finally did an hour ago.

My Mom was hit as a pedestrian and was sent to UofL. At first i was upset she went there because the hospital was known for poor care, BUT Mom received great care. I was really impressed with the way the ER staff handled her situation. They kept calm when speaking to the family and kept us in the loop on everything...great job! After her surgery she was sent to the 6th floor for recovery. I cannot say enough about the nursing staff on that floor...particularly Brittany and Judy...wonderful care each and every day. The nurses were upbeat, positive and took time to really listen and be a part of our family. Not only did Mom receive great care...Brittany and Judy cared for the family. On occassionas when i was emotionally exhausted and overwhelmed the nursing staff always asked if i was ok...they chit chatted a bit and some even had a joke to share to keep my spirits high. The nursing staff will always be remembered for going above and beyond. There were a few bumps while we were there...the ghettoness of the cafeteria staff, being told Mom already ordered her food for the day when she couldn't speak in the phone...this craziness added to the stress of the situation. I must point out once i found the right person to share these concerns with the issues were addressed promptly...the higher ups even came to Mom's bedside to apologize...that meant the world to us. There was also the ortho team...I was not happy with those assigned to Mom. They came in too strong with Mom's physical therapy. Mom had laid in a bed without any therapy for 3 days and she was suppose to jump out of bed and stand on her own. The ortho team also threw us an unexpected bomb...telling us day of they were discharging Mom...she couldn't stand and was barely able to make it to the porta potty next to the bed. I had to request a case manger to mediate. After that point Mom received excellent care and attention that she deserved all along. With the help of a couple of case workers Mom was transferred to a rehab facility and is now doing awesome. I am so proud of her!

No choice given my fathers physicians than to go here after his jtube placed in December fell out this morning. Waited for 3 hours to have the resident doc to place the same tube back. Attending wanted an X-ray to verify its position. Over 6 hours later we learn they want a CT Scan and not an X-ray. Docs should know what imaging they want and why. Hours spent with my diabetic father not being able to have his medically necessary tube feedings because they took the wrong image. Now we have been waiting another hour waiting for the contrast dye so he can get an image. This hospital doesn’t have it together. Only bright spot is that my fathers nurse, Elliot, was pleasant. I’ll give a star for him. Avoid this place if at all possible.

I am only giving 1 star because it makes me do atleast that. Let me start by saying my boyfriend was brought to U of L last October by ambulance due to trauma and the care that he received during his entire month long stay was nothing short of amazing. The care he has received since has been outstanding for follow-ups and surgeries. He had surgery a week ago it was the final surgery but also a very complicated one. He saw his Dr this morning due to infection and was given an antibiotic. After taking the 1st dose he had an adverse reaction and was running 102+ degree fever. Since it was after hours we were to goto the ER. Upon walking in I was asking several staff members for a wheelchair as he was struggling to continue walking and wobbly on his feet. The ones that did acknowledge my existence looked around dumbfounded and shrugged me off. After we trudged to the ER with him almost passing out along the walk we were met with rude, disgruntled employees that obviously had better things to do. I explained the situation and was pointed towards the chairs in which we sat in for hours. When his name was called to register he couldn't get up and walk there so I asked for a wheelchair. The woman got up and disappeared for the next 45 mins!! Came back for a brief second without a wheelchair said not a word to us and disappeared again. I can't say for how long cause we left. We left and came home because he couldn't sit on those chairs any longer uncomfortable and suffering! I am shocked and appalled with the staff of the emergency room and their lack of professionalism, common courtesy, or plain human kindness! This is not the U of L that we expierenced coming in thru ambulance/trauma team or thru scheduled surgery. This U of L needs work and desperately. I am confident the messages left at the surgeons office will be answered 1st thing in the morning and he will get a new antibiotic that he doesn't have side effects from that will help to clear this infection and get him on the road to recovery. If the staff of the ER had been anywhere near competent tonight he may have gotten some much needed relief NOW and not be forced ro suffer thru til morning. ER staff you should be ashamed of yourselves and you should want to do better and try harder to meet the standard of excellence and quality that U of L stands for.

If I could leave 0 stars I absolutely would. This was the worst experience in any medical facility I have ever had. I was very anxious about going to the emergency room with COVID right now but I had an excruciating pain in my left side that was making it difficult to breathe so I didn’t know what else to do. When I arrived, the lady at the desk took my name and birthdate and gave me a wrist band. One by one I saw people get called up to the desk to be “triaged”. The original nurse seemed extremely polite and thorough. She left before I was called up and the nurse that took over was careless and rude. She asked me what was hurting and that’s all. She did not ask any COVID screening questions, current medications, or family medical history (which I figured they’d want to know to rule out any possible underlying conditions). Beyond that I didn’t see one person cleaning, not even wiping down the triage chair in between patients. I was finally brought back to a room where I was quickly greeted by the nurse practitioner who spent less than 1 minute speaking to me, touched my side barely, and dismissed any concerns I expressed to her. She had me in tears with how rude and dismissive she was. I expressed my concerns about possible COVID complications and stated that I’ve had a lot of exposures recently since I am also a hospital employee. She chuckled and said “we all have”. She said they were going to do an X-ray to check my lungs, and give me prescriptions and “send me on my way”. The nurse then came to draw my blood and had to stick me at least 4 times before successfully being able to get enough blood. She kept saying I have to be dehydrated and I kept telling her I drink over a gallon per day, and I drink nothing but water. While the nurse was in there she was talking to be about why I was upset and she also began to dismiss my feelings and concerns. The nurse said “here we basically just put band aids on even really serious cases, we don’t do that kind of digging to figure stuff out”. At this point I was done, done trying to voice my concerns, and done trying to get them to hear me and to help me. They kept saying I should contact my employee health and go get covid tested? But they could have tested me and refused to do it. They told my mom that they have criteria that had to be met to do a COVID test but they never screened me to begin with. Little did they know I’ve had several symptoms over the last couple of days. I had heard such great things about this hospital and as a UofL Health employee, I figured I would be in good hands but this was honestly a traumatic experience and I was extremely disappointed.

My wife had a tumor removed and she can not say enough about the nurses and the doctors who took care of her. I personally was exhausted because we both didn't sleep much the night before. I had to go home and when I returned in the morning she was being took care of and I felt secured knowing that they actually cared for her like she was part of their family. She is recovering very well. I realize people will complain about homeless people and smells of cigarettes where people shouldn't smoke. Get over it Karen and move along. If you don't help your part of the problem. May God bless those who take care of their patients.

I've Been Here Since 1a.m. Wasnt Seen By triage till about 2:50am Currently Sitting In The Waiting Room Still An Here It Is 4:38am Staff very short tempered as far as simple questions, if you even get an answer an not ignored. "Excuse me" or "ma'am" will not be enough to get someones attention. Overall a dreadfull experience. Wana Go To UofL Downtown. Scared ima get the same experience along with a longer wait time.

I went in on recommendation from the UofL School of Dentistry, for an abscess. I didn't even have to wait to be seen. And the resident dentist came down and installed a drain, and I felt no pian at all. Everyone was very professional and compassionate. They sent me on my way with the necessary prescriptions, and made sure I was content before I left.

I had to go the UL Emergency Room due to burns to my face and I couldn’t of had a better experience than I had. From the ladies at the front door to the ladies in registration and the doctors and nurses were all great. I was seen shortly after getting there and was kept up to date on what they were doing. Amanda was my nurse and she was very helpful and checked on me often during my time there.

They are rude. Don't want you to ask questions. If you do they don't answer you. Left my husband in pee until they finally cleaned his bed but left depends wet on him. Was suppose to find him a room but when arrived still same er room. Don't recommend to my worse enemy

Asking the front desk, "is this gonna be like a 1 hour wait or a 6 hour wait" and getting the same response when I walked up of "it'll be a minute" to describe that I'll be waiting a while is not only inaccurate, but doesn't answer my question. Everything and everyone after that was good and helpful. Waited almost two hours to get my x ray and discharge back, no eta. This made getting my ride difficult.

I have been in that er God knows how many times over the years. A majority of time I have recieved great care, but the last time I was there I recieved the worse care I have ever received in any er in this city. I had to call ems to take me there. I was in severe pain in my left kidney area and nauseated. I was back in the er for five hours. The nurse turned my arm into a pin cushion for an iv, That he told me was for a ct scan. That they never did. My pain level was a 9. My repeated requests for something for pain and the nausea fell on deaf ears. During the five hours I was there they did not give me anything for the pain or the nausea. All they did was draw blood and a urine analysis. Once my nurse got the iv he lied and said I needed for a ct scan in he never came back in and checked on me the five hours I was there. Five hours later the er dr. came in and told me my blood work and urine came back ok and they were going to send me home. My nurse came back about half hour later and handed me a couple tylenol and basically told me dont let the door hit me in the a on the way out. I went off and told them I had been there for five in severe pain and nausea and all they were going to do is hand me a couple tylenols and send me home. They looked at me like I was a nut case. The only way I will ever be treated in their er again is if I am unconcious and ems take me there. I live in the projects. One of the drug dealers here would have helped me more than they did.

My ederly father is currently sitting in the er now for 6 days, can't eat because of problems swolling. fractures from a falk, heart issues, COPD, very disoriented. Told he had a bed and room then told he didn't. No bathing or any care of that nature. And yet to get answers or see a doctor. Absolutely worst hospital. We WIll be getting some answers today. Even if we need to contact authorities or a lawyer. This absolutely insane. It inhumane to let someone in a emergency room for 6 days and starving and in pain.

The absolute worst Hospital experience I've ever seen. My sister was in a car accident in rural Indiana and was taken to this ER by paramedics. They proceeded to leave her in a "hallway room" for over 24 hours. "Admitted" but left her in the hallway fo the ER. They even put over 40 stitches in her upper leg and thigh in view of dozens of people that walked by. She had no privacy, no comfort nothing. She even had to call me on the phone to get me to call the nurses station so someone would find her nurse so she could go to the bathroom after asking for HOURS. When I finally got to see her, she was surrounded by Dirty trays and filth. We got to the point that she was being discharged and we found out they called the prescriptions into the wrong pharmacy. We had to track them down to get them to try to send them to the right Pharmacy, they told us they did,we got there, they weren't there. We call the original Pharmacy they were sent to and they only ever got one of three prescriptions. We called back the next day and we were told we were out of luck because the provider wasn't there that day and we needed to drive the 4 hours back to that hospital. It is disgusting, it is not managed well and everywhere you look are groups of staff talking and chatting while you have patience and pain up and down the hallways. And when you call in to try to get an update on a family member and you spend almost 30 minutes waiting on hold, hang up and call back. They chastise you and say you should have waited longer don't you know this is a level one Trauma Center. Do better, it is disgusting.

If you’re looking for a place to pay them treat you like garbage and let you die, this is the place. They are narcissist, incompetent, no regards for human life. Please take your loved ones elsewhere!!

Great Value brand hospital, more security than doctors and nurses, more people probably die waiting in the lobby than they save in the back. Absolutely pathetic and UofL should be ashamed.

Giving it a 3 star because of how dirty the room was before I came in. I use to clean hospital rooms for a living emergency rooms at that and I'm disappointed. The floor was dirty the walls look like they haven't been washed in decades the seat was dirty the table wasn't cleaned off stuff was left in the room and the dirty linen was still in here and there's somebody's body fluids just chillen in here still I'm disgusted and don't even get me started on the color of the floor it blends in with blood this should never be the color of a hospital floor🤦🏽 makes me wanna grab the cleaning stuff and do it myself the correct way. Smh. The staff was amazing though the person who does registration and the nurse I had were my favorite. It would've been a 5 if the room wasn't dirty

The staff was friendly, but when I was getting looked at, they made my wife stay outside to wait for me in the cold with some sketchy people walking around the hospital. The place was VERY DIRTY and needs a good cleaning. I don't recommend this hospital to anyone. I felt like I needed a shower when I left.

My daughter and I walked here during the ice storm. They were great with her. This was the emptiest I've ever seen this ER though and it still felt really slow. Five stars anyways because the staff helped her so much.

I thought this hospital was the place to be if you were sick or hurt but it's not. My dad has cancer and can't hear much at all. The took him back and no one was able to go back with him. It was a cold rainy night and we were expected to sit outside and wait. Do they have a waiting room? Oh yes but you can't sit inside there. My aunt was with me and we had to tag team back and forth the whole night. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. We darn near froze to death and didn't have a clue what was happening inside for the first bit. Vickie Jackson

The 5 stars are for the staff. They were amazing. All the doctors and nurses. But the security guard at the entrance. Horrible. Absolutely rude. Laughed at me. I just had major surgery and was having complications but good to know I can be laughed at when I'm comin to make sure I'm ok.

I would not recommend the ER to anyone. My boyfriend had a major toe injury and they stitched his toe back on IN the ER after cutting a chunk of bone off while he was awake in the ER. No operating room, or IV antibiotics. They sent him out on crutches after 6 hours of trauma and blood loss. They said not to come back unless he was bleeding out on the ground and at that point I would apply a turnaquit and call 911. We felt like things were off so we went to another doctor for a second opinion and by two says later his toe was rotting off. He was admitted to hardin memorial where they took care of him and amputated the toe. By far the WORST ER in kentucky. The podiatrists name was Billy something for future reference. He not only looks like he dissects cats, he did a procedure that should've been done in an operating room and joked about how big the bone was that he cut off.

Besides the hippa violations and four attempts to get a vein, leaving me in hall for 12 hours to pee on myself and general indifference; I wouldn't take an enemy here!

They need to add urgency to emergency room. Took 5 minutes to get someone to even go faster than a walk. I hope this place goes under investigation. It could cost someone their life one day.

My name is Jonathon Thornberry. I went to the ER today for severe leg pain when walking or bending my leg... they rushed me out of there and my paperwork said no work restrictions when I couldn't even walk to the xray room. How in the hell am I supposed to work tomorrow when I can't even walk???
