The webpage suggests that the visit is appointment only. I filled in the form, but has never received any answer. So we called the next day and advised to just come. The boat is actually always there. The views of the castle are fabulous, I only wish we had better luck with the weather. The boat ride is about 2 minutes. Ticket is 4 euros. They allow about 45 minutes for the visit, before taking you back. The castle itself is actually quite small and doesn’t have much to do or see. The information is scarce. If coming with small kids, watch out for them, as the mural can be potentially dangerous as it is quite narrow and has no rails. Even I was kind of afraid walking there.

Pretty cool castle. Not huge, but enough the be worth the visit. You take a small boat over for €4 and it'll give you some nice views for pics. You can then walk up to the castle for some beautiful views of the Targus River. There's also a small restaurant overlooking the river when done to refresh.

I am passionate about castles and Castelo de Almourol is a must-go. Right in the center of Tagus River, the imposing castle surprised me with grandeur. It's the perfect scenery to relish a wonderful day. You can go there by train.

Very nice view of the castle from the harbour. If you wish to visit the castle and the island, be aware of the schedule and frequency of the official boat (summer time it states that goes until 18:30h, but actually when it gets close to 18:00h it is only possible to return from castle to harbour, trips to castle will not be possible).

One of the highlights of our holiday in Portugal! A castle sitting on a little island - the only access is by boat. What a breathtaking view and an awesome experience. We just loved this place so much. The only disadvantage was that we were told we could stay up to 40 minutes here. While it is a small space, I would have rather not spent our time checking our watch. The ticket price includes the boat ride and the castle visit.

Well worth a visit, can buy the ticket from the man on the boat, 4€ each. We are going back…fantastic history!

This was a bargain at €4 per person. You get 40 minutes to explore the castle after the boat docks. We didn’t book beforehand, but were lucky enough to get on the first boat of the day at 14:30, which had exactly 3 places open for us — perfect.

The castle is really pretty, amazing view of the river and it's surroundings. However, there are a few unprotected areas that can be dangerous (i had trouble going there, being afraid of highs and no rail to hang on). Also, the boat trip there is pricey (4€). There's only one boat, so you have to wait (not long, the trip is less than 5 min, which again makes me wonder why its so expensive).

In March which is low season our small tour has the castle all to ourselves. Very interesting defensive design and great views of the surroundings

I had the wonderful experience of meeting the local people, who owe their work to the presence of the castle. The castle can be reached by boat and you can tour it as much as you want. It is in perfect condition and stands majestically on the banks of the Tagus River.

Very nice place to see, unfortunately you can only visit during certain months since you have yo go on a boat to vet to the castle. You can also go around (10mn car trip) and check a viewpoint from the other side of the castle. The area surrounding the castle seems a little sketchy, paper factories and wood/paper production zone and the Tancos military zone makes this a very specific area... anyway its worth to see

I LOVE guided tours! My wife and I took one (8+ hour tour) from Lisbon to Tomar, this castle a church i will comment on and had an awesome time! Like normal, it was hot and I do not deal with heat very well (to say the least)! Side point.... get a decent neck fan if you are sensitive to heat and get stifled by a lack of breeze like me!

I love this place. We went as part of a knight templar tour. This was our first stop. I personally enjoyed being in such an old/historic place. It was amazing. The little boat ride to get to the island was cute, and you got to see the fortress from great angles. Climbing to the top gave a great view of the area. I recommend going with a guide so you can get the history of the place. Otherwise you'll miss out on great information about the place.

Beautiful and well preserved castle! Make sure to plan your trip as the boat that gets you there is having a break from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.

Beautiful...yet small Castle...It's unique setting makes for a long and interesting history...Using the site for tickets is useless...Just show up...pay 4 euros and let the boat dude take you there...Resident Cowboy and supporter of the economy of Portugal since 2016...

A castle built on a river island by the Knights Templars in 1170, for real. The island was given to them by Dom Alfonso Henriques, 1st king of Portugal. The site is well presented, only accessible by boat. Cafe nearby for a cold beer on a warm day.

Fantastic castle! The information at the place says the castle is kept by militar trustworthiness, there is is unit nearby and sometimes you can see them around the area. Take it to notice that is forbidden to cross by walk, you need to buy ticket at the boat or at the cultural centre (templars interpretation center) in Vila Nova da Barquinha. The accessibility to castle is easy and there is a huge park for cars and buses. The cross needs to be done by boat, it's a small fiber boat with top capacity around 20 people, more or less, the first departure is at 10h and it goes and returns on a pace around 40 min or so, with groups. It's not very advisable for people with locomotion issues. After the boat you need to go uphill to the castle. In there there is the ground area and towers accessibility. The best off the castle is to go on top of the tower you have a 360 view of the view an surrounds. Unfortunately the pigeons make it a bit dirty at the tower.
