Interesting example of outdated ww1 defensive strategies at the start of WW2 .Impressive underground fortress which required special attention of the German high command , as it stood in the way for the invasion of Belgium . With the help of new types of explosives and use of glider planes , the Germans made the garrison surrender without much casualties .Well preserved and good representation of how life in this underground complex was organized .Original German glider plane to be seen ( only one left in the world ) .Bring boots as the surroundings are muddy ( Dec.) .

We took a guided tour there. The fort has been beautifully restored. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. You learn a lot about the history before the fort was built and after but also how it was taken in WWII.

I been coming here since 2000, and seeing the changes throughout the years, the Fort is alive with there events and local scheduled tours. It’s a must see and do if your into history, you still can feel the war vibe during peaceful time. Behind the fort on the Prince Albert canal, peaceful and beautiful watch out for the falling rocks.

Had a themed tour of the Fort for 4 hrs into closed areas. Excellent guide and had a fantastic time exploring so many areas and hearing the stories of what the battle here was like. Explosions and blast damage cannot be described in a book to do it justice nor can standing where 4 Belgium soldier were vaporised from the heat blast of an explosion and seeing the explosion damage and the blast damage and the charred tunnel. A must to visit. We had the VIP tour to canella nord and external visit.

A remarkable example of how a state of the art facility can become obsolete just five years later. Designed to guard a crossing of the Albert Canal, it was rendered inoperable in short time by the first deployment of airborne troops and the hollow charge. Areas have been recreated to show how life was in the fort, along with seeing some of the damage suffered in the form of twisted steel and broken concrete. Especially poignant at this time is the memorial to the young men who lost their lives here defending their country from unprovoked attack.

Excellent story of WW2 of how the Germans conquered in 32 hours the Belgian fort. You can walk inside the fort where the atmosphere is incredible and everything is well preserved and presented to take you back in time.

Had a great tour in this largest WWII fort of Belgium. At the beginning of WWII (for Belgium and the Netherlands) the Nazis captured the fort in a very short time, landing on the top of it with gliders. They offer several types of tours but my daughter and I took the 2 hour one. She loved it as we walked through long tunnels and also went up in one of the canon turrets. After the tour we also enjoyed nature and the wide fields on top of the fort.

I don't know where to start. We took the 3.5 private tour and it was so worh it. I think our tour guide was called Marco and he was just excellent. I found out later there was a 6 hour tour and I would.have taken it had I known. For people interested in fortifications this is one of the best, best preserved and significant fortresses I have ever visited Highly recommended.

A wonderful walk over the top of the fort gives a clue as to its Mega size then a Guided visit inside for 3 hours Just an amazing place with one obvious flaw. = it's enormous flat grass roof!! Allow 3 hours at least for the full visit and you will be rewarded with new onsite into the thinking between the wars of how they intended to protect the country

Sehr imposanter Bunker.

Booked a private tour to see the depths of the fort. When we arrived we were greeted by Fred, an amazingly passionate volunteer guide, who absolutely tailored the tour to our interests and showed us the most interesting parts of the fort with fitting anecdotes and matching history. There was literally only one question he couldn't answer, and even that one got resolved. 10/10 great fort, great Fred!

Defense base for ww1 and ww2. Plenty of underground tunnels to explore and above ground a nice walk to view the gun emplacements. Lots of information in English which gave a good feeling of the history and use of the Fort. Lots of free parking too.

History museum telling the story of the attack and surrender of the fort with documents, movies and staged scenes. It's a big place and it gets chilly so bring a sweater. The presentation is a little dated but the story is interesting. Apart from walking inside the fort, it's worth doing the ça 3K walk in top of the fort to get a bearing for the location of the fort

Empfehlungswert!

Definitely worth a visit! Interesting expo inside of the fort/old military base. You can walk through the underground base and discover the different rooms and their occupations.

An excellent place to visit to see one of the greatest WWII battles. An amazing example of how innovative thinking can overcome great obstacles. The English speaking tour guide was an excellent interpreter of the history of the place with a personal connection because his grandfather was there during the German airborne assault on the enormous fortress. Absolutely worth a day’s visit and the extra cost of a tour.

Great place. The people who work there are very knowledgeable and friendly. If you want an English tour I would suggest to make a reservation. The history of this place is extraordinary and I am not a big fan of the Germans but I must say that this mission was amazing. I will be going back to see the goings I missed.

The enterence was €12 in place. I was alone and visit without tour guide but the staff answered all my questions and helped me during finding my way. Some of the informations are not English but they gave me a mini brochure in English to, ask for it. You should spend at least 2 hours inside and 1 hour outside. I strongly suggest you go to the real watchtower, it is far a bit but definitely worth it.

Fascinating piece of history, the guides are really knowledgeable and they do incredible work not just maintaining the fort but also bringing more areas into a state where they can be visited by people. I strongly recommend the private tour if you are interested in history, it's 3/4 hours but our guide René was really amazing and provided some incredible insight to the fort and the German paratroop operation.

If you get anything out of this review, it's that you should get the guided tour. There is so much story that you wouldn't find yourself by just walking around. Prepare to walk some stairs and be told the story of Fort Eben-Emael. I'll leave some pictures without context to get you in the mood. If you feel anything for history and/or world war 2, this is a most see.

Tour guides provided insightful facts regarding the construction, garrisoning, and capture of this defensive fortification. Great visit for those who study military history.

It was the largest military fort in the world. You can walk around the fort (it takes more than one hour and you will have to climb more than 65 meters, but you will have a great vista of the Meuse and Canal Albert. Visiting the inside of the fort is possible, count 3 hours or more. Free visit possible, or with a guide.

One of the largest forts at the time, about 20 minutes south of Maastricht. Fort was taken by German paratroopers in 1940. The place opens at 10am, but you can walk around the outside. There are nearby hiking trails as well as behind the fort.

Wonderful experience. Lots to learn and see. The tour was in Flemish, but I have the option to see the initial short film in English. The tour allows you to see places you won't see if you do the tour on your own.

Awesome piece of history. I really enjoyed the whole place, which is kept in a great condition. I value the possibility to go explore on your own, without the guide. Eternal glory to the defenders of freedom.
