Già Marco Polo della sua opera "Il Milione" narra di tribù di mercanti del Tamil che trasportavano il sale verso il medio oriente verso la fine del 1200: ne rimase stupito perchè, nonostante lui fosse uomo di laguna, non aveva notizia di sale diverso dal sale ricavato dalle miniere (salgemma). L'area è costellata di saline coltivate in maniera piuttosto rudimentale, non ho individuato sistemi di pompaggio meccanico, tuttavia i luoghi sono molto affascinanti e meritevoli d'una visita accurata
