Nanmangalam Reserve Forest is a protected forest located in the southern part of Chennai, about 24 km from the city centre. It is located at Medavakkam on Velachery High Road between Velachery and Tambaram. The reserve forest has an area of 320 hectares. However, the total area of the forest is 2,400 hectares.

No permission for public. Only ngo with groups and purpose are given official permission. We went through WGWCt Chennai. The forest is very well maintained and secured around. It’s of total 320 hectare. Best for trek, bird watching, to know flora and fauna of the forest. Take some snacks and water with you stay hydrated.

Government has just now realized and started taking care of this forest. Officers posted here are not just present there for just the job but also really care about the forest and friendly. We cannot enter without proper approval from Forest officer's permission. It's one of the best places in chennai for birding. There is a small exhibition present inside the forest which displays all fauna and flora present in the forest with details. Hope government would reclaim encroachments around the forest and increase the forest area.

Went along with WCIF organisation to know about the importance of urban forestry. The place is peaceful and greenery. Plantation drive is taking place religiously. This forest hosts hooted owl(with horn) on the quarry, upto different types of birds migrating in and out followed by butterflies and colorful flowers. The forest guide gave plenty of information on the medicinal plants and trees growing here. Permission from forest officials is a must to visit this place.

Not much to see here....but I like the fact that they are making conscious efforts to grow more trees and nurture them properly. They have a small nursery garden where lots of small shrubs and plants are been grown. There's a small trek path as well for a small nature walk. They also have a information centre about all the reserve forests, national parks and other sanctuaries across entire tamil nadu.

I love this place a lot. This is probably the most interesting and eco-friendly place I would want to be if I'm anywhere near camp road. This has been a paradise during summer and safe haven for its immigrants at the times of floods and other natural disasters. The place feels so pleasant mainly because of the trees. This is what modern environmentalists refer to as #MicroClimate. Ever watched Mad Max: Fury Road Watch and You'll know what I'm speaking about.

Chennai is the only city which has a National Park within the city limits. This one is a bit on the outskirts but is still very close to the city. The lush green trees are a delight in themselves. Stop by and enjoy the greenery, feel yourself as a part of nature...

Nanmangalam forest is one of the wonders of Chennai. Located between Chennai, Velachery- Thambaram Nanmangalam. Chennai is home to not just one, but two reserve forests the Pallikaranai wetland and the Nanmangalam scrub forest. Located along the Tambaram-Velachery Main Road, the Nanmangalam Reserve Forest is among the last remaining havens of the 'Vandalur scrub', the original natural forest of this landscape. Now Sri Yoganithiswarar Forest Temple is RESTRICTED to the public ad entry to the forest is permanently close to a brick wall. Yoganithiswarar forest temple is in a beautiful and calm location inside Nanmangalam Reserve Forest is a protected area located in the southern part of Chennai, about 24 km from the city center must-see place in Chennai.

Spanning around 320 hectares, the patchy vegetation of the Nanmangalam Reserve Forest thrives across hillocks and plains. While the plain landscape is dominated by thorny shrubs, thickets and grasslands, the thicker and woodier vegetation is found mostly in the hillocks bordering the reserve. A study conducted by city-based biodiversity conservation organisation Care Earth Trust revealed the presence of 442 different species of flowering plants inside the Nanmangalam Reserve Forest alone. “The species diversity in Nanmangalam is phenomenal; it is the highest compared to any other patch of forest within city limits.

This forest area is rich in wildlife. I have seen a lot of monkey bands, dog packs, several peacocks and even varied species ranging from several lizard species to even snakes such as the cobra, common viper and other species native to Indian subcontinent. The plant life is also varied and has a range of medicinal herbs and plants. Most off the trees, planted by the forest department in this forest after a forest fire a few years back, is comprised mainly of eucalyptus trees. Moreover, there is a Siva temple in the forest. It is a really old temple that everyone should visit. The temple has a silent and spiritual atmosphere. Also, the Namangalam Reserve Forest makes a very good trekking destination with a series of small hills which are climbable, but only after explicit permission from the forest department should one enter the forest.

The importance of forests cannot be underestimated. We depend on forests for our survival, from the air we breathe to the wood we use. Besides providing habitats for animals and livelihoods for humans, forests also offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion and mitigate climate change. Due to the many construction the Nanmangalam forest is getting shrink ed. Its one of the best place near the medavakam locality.

I went to the Forest office of Nanmangalam along the main road. They said entry to the forest is prohibited without proper permission. I was directed to get permission from Head of the Forest Department, Panagal Maaligai, Saidapet 18 km away from the forest office and cautioned the office would open only at 11 am. Further enquiry revealed that there were no guides or trained officials to take the tourists inside the forest. In contrast to Kerala and other countries generating income by ecotourism there was no positive encouragement for the tourists to visit the places in Tamil Nadu including this forest . I therefore gave up the idea of visiting though the internet websites were blasting it was a nice place for the tourists to do birdwatching.
