One of the oldest and holiest temples of this region , the Narasimhaswami temple at Maddur , according to sthalapurana , originated in Dwapara yuga . The built part can be dated back to Chola times . The spacious corridors are clean and well kept . Very serene atmosphere . Just next to this temple , upon a mound, is the famous Varadaraja or Allalanatha installed by the Hoysala king , Vishnuvardhana . A huge, beautiful murthi that should not be missed .

Situated in Maddur, on Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway, Temple which is more than 1000 years old, it is believed that Krishna Himself got Brahma to carve a Murti of Ugra Narasimah and gave Darshan to Arjuna. (Arjuna whated Krishna to give Darshana of Narasimha form; Krishna then replied to Arjuna that it was not possible to show that fierce form).Ugra Narasimha Deity is one of the most ferocious forms of Lord Narasimha worshiped. The Deity of Lord Narasimha has eight hands and three eyes. Two hands are tearing Hiranyakashipu apart, who lies on the legs of Lord Narasimha; two hands are holding the intestines of Hiranyakashipu which appear like a garland on the transcendental body of the Lord; other four hands are holding the weapons of the Lord – Sudarshana (chakra / disc), Panchajanya (shankha / conch-shell), Pasha & Ankusha. On the right side of the Lord is the Deity of Prahlada and on the left side is the Deity of Garuda, standing humbly and praying to the Lord. His third eye got manifested while killing the demon Hiranyakashipu.

The Narasimha idol is very beautiful with 8 hands & 3 eyes. It is built by the Hoysala dynasty, there are multiple idols carved on the pillars to the temple. I also liked the beautiful art work in the temple compound a lot.

The Narasimha temple is a very old temple.Β The history of the temple dates back to Mahabaratha times when Arjuna wanted to see Krishna in Narasimha Awatara. However Krishna denied him the same. Lord Brahma then installed the idol of Lord Narasimha for Arjuna to view at this place. Hence it was named as Arjunapuri. As years passed by this place was used to prepare maddu gundus (Kannada words for arms and bullets) during nizams time and gained the name of Maddur. This deity is one of the most ferocious form of Lord Narasimha (with eight hands and three eyes) on earth. With two hands he tears Hiranyakashipu apart, with the other two he is holding the intestines of Hiranyakashipu which appear like a garland on the transcendental body and with the other four he holds the weapons of the Lord – Sudarshana (chakra / disc), Panchajanya (shankha / conch-shell), Pasha and Ankusha. Deity of Prahalad is to his right and to the left is the deity of Garuda who stands humbly praying to Lord Narasimha. While killing Hiranyakashipu his third eye was manifested. There is Sri Varadaraja swamy temple adjoining the temple.

Lord Narasimha temple in Maddur is beautiful and ancient. The main deity is Shri Ugra Narasimha, a form of Lord Vishnu, after killing Hrinyakasibu. A seperate sanctum for Lord Rama, Sita with Shri Hanuman kneeling and holding hand near his mouth is unique. The outer pragaram requires cleaning and maintenance. The temple is on the southern side of Bangalore Mysore Highway.

The power of Narasimhar can be experienced here. The oldest temple thousands of years old. But new improved pictures and painting available which brings vision of deities to the youngsters to understand. The stone carving in the pillars are mix of chola and pallava models. This is art of ancient India to cherish and safeguard for the generations to come.

This Narasimha Swamy is very special with 8 arms. On request from Arjuna, Sri Krishna appeared before Arjuna in this Narasimha form. One more important Sannadhi is there wherein one can see a unique Yashoda Krishna which is very very rare. Very close to this temple, 16' Lord Varadaraja Swamy is there in standing posture which will mesmerise people.
