Awesome food and exceptional service is what you get at Gary Danko. Everything we ordered was amazingly delicious. They make the best French 75 cocktails. We’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in the Bay Area.

The pick up experience was really easy since I parked right in front where their valet service normally would be. Walked right in and the staff were very friendly and courteous. Exactly the kind of service I would expect from GD! My order was ready right on time. I was so eager and excited when I saw they had a whole roast duck on their menu for the week. My thing with duck is that it is sooo good when it is done right and can be dry and so so when not. This is not an equal comparison but Chinese deli roast ducks are often really good. Juicy and tender. The creamy broccoli soup was also just average. The flakiness of the puff pastry crust for the mushroom and asparagus tart was quite good. The baked Alaska looked really really pretty but the flavor and taste fell short because it was quite tart even without the orange sauce. The whole takeout experience at home took about 1.5 hours to prep, reheat and eat. So it is not a simple take home and ready to eat kind of meal. I like doing these kind of fancy takeout meals because I have fun putting the dishes together. On my own from scratch it would take too much time and ingredients to do so.

Celebrated my birthday here! We had the lovely bartender Dee who greeted us at the bar and made us a Last word and a Junglebird cocktail. Both were delightful. Then we got seated and served by Peter who was phenomenal! Our courses were spaced out well and the wine pairings that Peter had for us were superb. We felt the experience was quite honestly better than the food. Our courses were definitely not bad, but we felt there was a slight lack of detail to flavor (the filet course was overly salty and the dessert course was probably the least favorite). At the end of the evening, we were given a breakfast cake (which we ate the next morning and were in AWE!) Last but not least, we talked with the wonderful Greg who is the General manager. Quite genuine and lovely to talk to! All these people mentioned made our experience memorable and fun! We definitely are grateful for the lovely dinner! Thank you!

Really a truly memorable experience. Andrew and Israel were especially attentive. Israel's expertise in the cheese course alone was a special treat. The food was exquisite -from first to last course - and the ambiance and service made for a wonderful anniversary memory. Cheers to Gary Danko and the staff of professionals who make an evening like this possible. We will always keep this place on our list of must returns!

Musy-try: scallop risotto, souffle Highlight: Free selection of courses and professional service. The price of your meal is decided by the number of courses you order. You can make any combination. My friend orders the tasting menu and I choose the 3 courses if risotto, duck brest, and souffle. We did not make reservation and came before 9 p.m . Luckily we got seated and spent a wonderful night with Gary Danko. Everyone dressed formly so we were worried if there is a dress code here. The waiter smiled and told us that our comfortableness is their goal of service. It is really sweet. The kitchen provides us a free soup at the beginning and a muffin upon leaving. I am not a muffin person but this one is quite soft and I like it. Love the risotto. I went to fog harbor at noon for the scallop risotto and I enjoyed that. The risotto at Gary Danko is even much better. Please take a try. The main course is delicious but not fantastic. They did not ask about the well doneness. There is very few parts require some effort to bite. There are two kinds of souffle desserts: chocolate and raspberry. I am not a fan of chocolate and raspberry is a bit sour for me. I hope they can some other options. I chose the raspberry souffle at the end. It is very soft and satisfying taste. If would be great if there is a sweeter version. Worth a try.

There were some real gems in the menus including scallops and lobster risotto but also some somewhat surprising misses including a beef tartare whose taste was barely perceptible and a chewy centerpiece in the lobster salad. Good service despite the heaving crowds in the two small dining areas.

I've been to a few mitchelin star ⭐ restaurants, a lot of them serve good food, but this one has the best service, the service is at a different tier. The food itself is really good, me and my bf came here for his birthday celebration, we ordered a 4 course + a 5 course. He's vegetarian and we both enjoyed the dishes and the drinks. They also prepared a small cake for him which is very nice

A great and fantastic restaurant with exceptional and straightforward food. You will not find the food complicated here in terms of a Michelin Restaurant. Instead, you will see delicious, consistent, fresh, abundantly flavorful, recognizable, hearty food! Here are what I and my friend had: 1. Seared Ahi Tuna with Avocado, Nori, Enoki Mushrooms and Lemon Soy Dressing 2. Glazed Oysters with Ostera Caviar, Salsify, Leeks and Lettuce Cream 3. Roast Maine Lobster with Potato Purée, Matsutake Mushrooms, Edamame, and Tarragon 4. Branzini with Fennel Purée, Niçoise Olives, and Saffron-Orange Emulsion 5. Seared Striped Bass with Winter Root Vegetable Risotto and Brown Butter Sage 6. Lemon Pepper Duck Breast, Duck Hash, Celery Root-Garlic Purée, and Cranberry-Cippolini Compote 7. Pork Tenderloin with Confit Pork Belly, Brussels Sprouts, Chestnuts, Butternut Squash, Apples and Raisin-Pine Nut 8. Herb Crusted Lamb Loin with Farrotto, Medjool, Dates and Orange-Saffron Glazed Rainbow Carrots 9. Warm Louisiana Butter Cake with Roasted Apples, Huckleberry Compote, and Vanilla Ice Cream 10. Espresso Gateau with Stout Ice Cream and Cocoa Nib Sable

We came here for my birthday and did a self-selected 3-course meal. There were so many good options to choose from and you were not limited to one dish from each section (so you could order 3 apps or even 3 mains). The service was amazing and we received lots of complementary items (appetizers, dessert, cake to-go). For the food, my fiancé and I shared the risotto, lobster, quail, and duck. I would say the lobster and the duck were the highlights but everything was great. I took off one star because while the dishes were great, none stood out to me as super unique or memorable. Overall a lovely experience and would come back!

Better late than never. Have eaten here many, many times over the past twenty years and know Chef Gary Danko from Restaurant Viognier in San Mateo. This Birthday was no different than the one from two years before, pre Covid. 5 stars across the board. Food, Beverage and Service spot on. Atmosphere...perfection. You can actually hold a conversation with your guests/company.

You might perceive it as a common theme in most reviews, but the hospitality at this restaurant is truly unmatched. You will encounter the most polite staff who are genuinely happy to serve you (something that is unfortunately quite rare in the United States). The service of the staff reminded us of our experience in the Maldives, which, if you're familiar, is very high praise. The food itself met the highest standards when it comes to fine dining. The risotto with lobster and summer vegetables was among the best I've ever had. I also highly recommend the lobster with potato puree. To quote my wife: "How can mashed potatoes be this good?" I also found the Moroccan herbed lamb to be exceptionally special. The warm Louisiana butter cake was just that - warm, buttery, and delicious in the most Southern way. We wholeheartedly recommend celebrating one of your special occasions with the team at Gary Danko. They will ensure your evening is extra special.

This is a great place to celebrate with your family. I took my husband for his bday and he loved it. We loved the appetizer of oysters with black caviar. We felt that the waitress was pushing us because the dishes came very fast.

We had an overall good experience at Gary Danko. The best part was the service. Attentive, personable, and versed in etiquette. We each selected four courses. I had the salmon, tuna, branzini, and duck. I could not get enough of the branzini and the salmon, just wonderful combinations of flavors. The tuna was cooked well, for someone who doesn't eat tuna, this was a nice change to my tuna perception. The duck, however, was not good at all. It just had a weird taste to me, but worse is that it made my partner feel sick. Definitely would have expected better from a 1-Star Michelin restaurant in that regard. Finally, the little dessert tasting plate was really nice because we got to experience the different flavors. Cocktails were delicious as well. The complimentary to-go wrapped dessert was dry to be honest. Three stars for the service, three of the courses, and the dessert tasting plate. It was good overall, but we would likely not return.

We've been here several times, there is no better restaurant in SF. The people as well as the food are second to none. Seamus used to be our go to guy, but Boris has replaced Seamus and still super incredible and Boris made this last experience even better than ever.

Well deserve to get a Michelin star! The food was incredibly good and interesting! They are very generous about their portions. You could make your own menu, yes, choose whatever you want in the lists. Service was great! Definitely get their chocolate soufflé with two sauces! Rich deep chocolate flavor with creamy consistency! Food: Excellent Ambiance: Excellent Service/ Excellent

From start to finish the staff at Gary Danko blew us away. As soon as I walked in I was wished a happy birthday and they offered to take my coat for me. On top of the amazing meal, we were greeted with a complimentary soup compliments of the chef. We also received complimentary pastries, chocolates, and a birthday cake and candle. Our water was never left unfilled and we always had bread and butter on our table. The cheese selection is amazing and the seafood bisque was as well. Very upscale restaurant and environment. I would celebrate every birthday/anniversary here.

Not the first time but highly chance the last time here. Oyster appetizer was a bit too salty, 3/5. Lobster risotto 4/5 Beef tartare was just okay, 3.5/5. Duck 3.5/5. Lobster entree 3.5/5. Another beef fillet dish was 2/5. Chocolate soufflé was plain. Overall, nothing stands out. Despite the okay-ish dishes, the waiter made a mistake by didn’t mention that we ordered duck twice when I asked what were the dishes we order twice cause we wanted to replace that by lobster entree. He only mentioned oyster appetizers which we did want to order twice. Eventually we got another duck entree after the first one handed to us half an ago. We absolutely didn’t have any appetite to eat it. I then asked the waiter who serving the dish if we can get it replaced, he said yes. Then our waiter came and told us politely no. I reminded him that I did asked him which dishes we ordered twice and he failed his task. He said he would talk with manger. And while we were waiting, we decided to just keep the duck entree to avoid causing trouble. The waiter came back said the lobster dish is already cooking. And he took that duck entree away after we said no to his question whether we wanted to keep it. (One interesting thing to point out is the replacement dish was ready around 5 minutes, making me wondering did they really spent effort on making their dishes outstanding?) After I received the check, I noticed that our three course got updated to four course, and the price surged by 27$ because of that. I did notice we received a -19$ gift on the check, but what about 8$ differ? It is not able the money, it is about the transparency. From ordering to final check, there is no transparency. I still left 20% tip, but I deducted the 8$ from it. We spent $400+ on the meal, for quality and service like this, there is little chance we will come back.

Was our best meal in San Fran. Not only was the food great but it had the best service I have ever had. Peter was our main server and he was very personable, attentive, and not over bearing. The entire staff was polite, helpful, and made us feel truly special. Would absolutely recommend.

Lovely spot for fine dining. The ambience is unbeatable - really intimate and upscale - and the service and food were amazing as well! We especially loved the beef tartare (exceptional), branzini, and duck, but everything was cooked perfectly and was beautifully presented. Of the desserts, the chocolate souffle is a must try, and the poached pears with gingerbread was really unique! We also received these adorable muffins for the morning after, which was such a nice touch. If you’re looking for a classic spot with reliably delicious food and a fine dining feel, Gary Danko should be your go to!

Three-and-a-half stars, rounding up. Let me explain why. The food is seriously fantastic. Some of the best I've ever had and well deserving of it's Michelin star. Service was excellent. One of my favorite things about Gary Danko, and one of the reasons I'm SO glad they reopened, is how flexible and accommodating their menu is. You can choose 3-, 4-, or 5-course menu and you can pick any combination of dishes. You want three starters and two desserts? No problem! The lost star -and-a-half is because of an issue with the menu. Before coming, they check any dietary concerns or allergies (I don't eat pork) and they confirm after seating your party who has the restriction. Which is all awesome. But we were a party of four and my partner and I usually share bites. Again, the food is amazing, I want to try it all--don't judge me! Well, my partner knows this and usually scans his menu choices to accommodate me. Unfortunately, the menu did not show the side on the duck was "bacon-braised endive." It was only after tasting it and asking the waiter what it was that we were informed. After excusing myself to the restroom, let's just say it put a damper on the rest of the evening. I could excuse the server for not pointing it out--after all, it was not a dish I ordered--but I couldn't excuse that it wasn't listed on the menu. I called the next day to let them know and to make sure they updated the menu for any other non-pork eaters, and they were very apologetic and the manager both emailed and called to apologize and listen to me. He assured me that the menu had been updated, seemed genuinely apologetic, and said he hoped I would be back. It seemed sincere and I do think I'll return (if I haven't mentioned, the food is superb) but it definitely felt like a major oversight in the opinion of someone who has dietary restrictions. But that concern and the assurance of rectifying it for future diners was appreciated so I only took off one-and-a-half stars (one for it happening and a half because I was surprised there wasn't some sort of overture along the the lines of, "please return and we'll include an extra course to make up for it" or, I don't know, here's a dessert to get you to come back, or, literally, anything to attempt to get us to return). Anyway, the food, menu options, and service are five stars. I'm glad they're back but it might take a little while for me to return.

Went here for dinner with colleagues as a special treat. They staff were attentive and friendly, accommodating teens and dietary restrictions easily. Amazing caviar, and creative scallop dish, and the Butter cake with apples and ice cream was spectacular. The cheesecake was also amazing. Don't miss dessert! Wonderful and memorable experience. Thank you.

Every city has a few institutional restaurants and restauranteurs that help define it, and Gary Danko is one of those venues for SF. The service is impeccable, presenting each dish to highlight its freshness and meticulous construction. This is a restaurant I’ve been to numerous times and each time the space takes you somewhere special, a culinary journey really. The menu is very straightforward, allowing you to choose a 3-, 4-, or 5-course meal with an optional wine pairing. Caviar service is at an additional cost. If you’re visiting SF for the first time and want to get a true California cuisine culinary experience, Gary Danko has to be on your list!

Last weekend, we visited Gary Danko again after many years (and a pandemic) for a belated birthday celebration. Happy to report that this restaurant is still at its absolute peak. Everything was wonderful, service is impeccable, and food preparation and presentation are superb. What we loved most was that the restaurant still offers maximum flexibility in letting customers choose which courses they want and allowing modifications to accommodate personal preferences. Fantasic experience all around. We will be back!

Delicious. Very friendly and knowledgable servers. And it was not expensive by SF standards. $170 for 5 course dinner. I am very surprised that I just learned about this restaurant.

We loved our experience at Gary Danko for our anniversary dinner. Food was just delicious. I had their Benedict and lamb. Both of these were scrumptious and the wine pairings were great too. I just feel that desserts were probably 9/10. Service was great. Just one thing I wish is that they bring valet parking back. Overall a wonderful experience.

We came here for our valentine’s day dinner and the food was fantastic. We first had a drink at the bar since we arrived a little early- the bartender was great. I had a yummy espresso martini. The food was the perfect temperature and taste. Definitley recommend coming here!

My friend and I came to visit SF on a food trip and Gary dankos was our last stop. It did not disappoint. The food was transcending. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and the chefs are super talented. Worth every cent. I also have some food restrictions and they were able to accommodate. I have had restaurants turn me away so it made me feel so welcome that they were willing to accommodate. I will be back with my husband next year! Thank you again!

We have been to Gary Danko as we are on our honeymoon in California (we have recently got married). It has been such a great experience, service, food, ambience, really outstanding! Staff went above and beyond and we got a celebratory cake as well.

They offer very good service, food is about 4 stars. I like most sea food there, but the meat is okay not too surprise, and the desert is good. Good experience!!

Superb dining experience! Professional yet friendly service paired with delicious 5 course meal. I recommend wine pairing with your dinner, the server or sommelier will suggest what wine would best pair with your meal. The chocolate soufflé was amazing and a must. Definitely would come back when we visit SF again!

We made reservations before we went to San Francisco. Our hotel was nearby and we walked to this restaurant. It was super busy & it was a Saturday evening. The food was amazing. The service was even better. We had an amazing meal and the experience was just great. All the servers were so attentive & there were many. They were all so nice. I decided to go with the 5 course tasting menu - minus the cheese course because I'm lactose intolerant. Course 1: Glazed oysters with ocsetra caviar, leek fondue, zucchini pearls, & lettuce cream. Course 2: Horseradish crusted salmon medallion with dilled cucumbers & mustard sauce. Course 3: Beef filet with soy mustard glaze, egg-plant shiitake marmalade with potato gratin, haricot vert & roasted pearl onions. Course 4: Baked chocolate soufflé with 2 sauces. Drink: Blood & Sand My daughter chose 4 courses - 1. Seared ahi tuna with avocado, nori, & enoki mushrooms. 2. Roast Maine lobster with potato puree. 3. Herb crusted lamb loin with eggplant zucchini tian & creamy polenta. 4. Trio of creme brulee. They gave us snacks for the morning. I don't remember what they were called but they tasted great. If I ever visit San Francisco again we would eat here again.
