This Rail Museum is an exemplary tribute to the Indian Railways. It features a vast collection of heritage & antique railway coaches, engines, vintage machineries and a lot more. It's spread across a huge area of lush green garden, which also serves as a perfect spot to spend some quality time amidst nature. This museum houses multitudinous large galleries, each containing vital information about the history of the Indian Railways, with a special emphasis given to the Howrah Station & Eastern Railways in particular. The "Hall Of Fame" & the "Hall Of Heritage" are the two must-visit halls, which shouldn't be missed while touring this museum. During my visit to this museum post Covid-19 lockdown, I was extremely pleased with it's maintenance standards. The entrance fee is ₹30 (2021). Highly recommended to visit, at least once. 👍🏻

The place was easy to locate and the navigation was accurate. (Walking distance from the Howrah railway station) First up, there is no dedicated parking spot available, so it’s recommended to use the parking spaces opposite the Railway station. The entry fee is low and the place is well maintained overall. The museum is famous for its collection of old locomotive carriages and artifacts of Eastern railway services from the same time period. The toy train and scale models of locomotives are another attraction. This place also doubles up as a picnic spot as there is a lot of open space that’s well-maintained. Overall, this place is a must visit if you come to Kolkata.

One of the last places we visited before the covid19 second wave stalled everything... The place is not maintained well... Although it is a museum but you would find many couples visiting here for spending quality time in corners or behind the bushes...💏 Situation might become embarrassing when visiting with kids...😁😁 Coming to the collection part the collection is decent with some of coaches been kept here belonging to the British Era... Entry Fee to this spot is ₹30...the entry fee has been increased post covid19 wave 1 lockdown... For ₹30 the place is not worth it...just a personal take on this...

A super loved placed place, with so many Train models along with the Engines, making the place a historic one. I went there with my old pals of IIM SHILLONG, thereby feeling more nostalgic. The entry ticket charged ₹ 30 and it was all worth to me. The place was clean enough. I would love to visit there again.

Honestly the place was great but, now it is not that good anymore. But, Authority should give more attention to this place. In one word, the place seriously need some maintenance. Also, this place place need some popularity. I only saw two-three couples and a family there. Also, the fans were not in working conditions. Only the boogies and engines placed outside and the garden is in nice condition. Also, there's a food stall there. But, items like Patties, burgers didn't look appetizing. Also packed items like chips, crakers had them belong from unknown local brands.

The railway museum is situated beside the Howrah Railway Station Goods Yard and just opposite the Riviera Auditorium. The entry fee is 30 rupees. They have nice exhibition of old railway wagons and engines. Also, there is a toy train ride which gives one round around this museum to show a surrounding view and it costs another 30 rupees. I visited this place on weekdays and it was not much crowded at that time. Also, there is a nicely maintained and decorated garden with varieties of plants inside this museum.good place 4 kids

Great spot for picnics, maybe. It also has a toy train service(₹20 per head). The entry fee is ₹30 per head. There are no canteens/stalls/ eateries inside. The Rail Museum, Howrah is one of the Regional Rail Museums of India and is managed by the Eastern Railways. Although much smaller than the Indian Railway Museum in Chanayakapuri, Delhi but it still offers an insight into the history and evolution of Indian Railway. On the right hand side of the entrance of the Rail Museum is a open area with railway tracks housing a array of different vintage locomotives. It contains an interesting combination of narrow gauge steam engines to electric and diesel locomotives. It also consists of a railway engine belonging to the East Pakistan Railway. During the 1971 Indo – Pak war this Pakistani engine made its way into Indian territory and was captured by the Indian Army. After spending several decades in the Bandel car shed it was restored and put on display at the Howrah Rail Museum. Here are several other exhibits including a giant steam locomotive, which hauled a heritage train between Howrah and Bandel on 9 Sept. 1999. There are also several commemorative coaches celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore and 100th anniversary of Sri Aurobindo’s arrival in Pondicherry. Sadly the coaches are kept under lock and key. Apart from locomotives and coaches the open area also exhibits several other railway accessories like cranes and steam road rollers. One the left is a giant steam meter gauge locomotive belonging to the Badrpur shed and on the extreme right is a tiny Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) engine (Also read: Chasing the DHR and Date with DHR). The third locomotive, a vintage 1855 stem engine, which was in display during the initial days has long been removed. Each of the two locomotives are accompanied by luxury saloons and the third saloon is also in display. Although visitors are not allowed inside the saloons but elevated platforms on either side provides a view of the richly decorated interiors. The Hall of Fame also displays several models of locomotives and coaches and their is a detailed pictorial representation of the evaluation of railway engines, coaches and wagons. The Rail Museum, Howrah is spread over a large area, with manicured lawns and landscaped garden. Several art installation, made out of railway junk are an added attraction. Also scattered are several railway accessories like wheels, signals, signal levers, guard lanterns, etc.

Although I am not a big fan of blacksmithing and machinery, I saw the post in the group, so I thought I would come back to the Railway Museum to spend some time. I was fascinated to go, to be honest, I felt like I had crossed the pages of the past 200-250 years of history in just 2 hours by time machine. What's not there? The story of Stevenson's engine from James Watt's concept of steam engine, 1911 wooden wagon van made in Liluah, India's first road roller from abroad, East Pakistan train that did not return to India during the 1971 war, steam engine HGS 26761 used in freight service in 1922. Gadar-ek prem kotha, Parinita, Bose-the forgottenen hero used in movies, Katwa narrow gauge train and engine, first Calcutta Metro bogie, Indraprastha-shunting engine, hand-operated crane, Howrah station design, Naihati Bandel bridge design, old used signals There is a wonderful collection of nostalgic dresses, tickets, telephones, postage stamps, regional logos, guide books, etc. There are pictures of different times at Howrah station, pictures of the cabin used by Rabithakur. Info collected

The museum is well kept and clean. The main incidents of the independence movement are beautifully designed and depicted. The lawns in front need to be developed and maintained as it will make the place more aesthetic and add to the overall beauty.

IF THEY ANSWER not to thy call walk alone, If they are afraid and cower mutely facing the wall, O thou of evil luck, Open thy mind and speak out alone. If they turn away, and desert you when crossing the wilderness, O thou of evil luck, Trample the thorns under thy tread, And along the blood-lined track travel alone. If they do not hold up the light When the night is troubled with storm, O thou of evil luck, With the thunder flame of pain ignite thine own heart And let it burn alone. -- Ravindranath Tagore

It's really good. From history of the becoming of the Mahatma to archival writings, photographs of him with other freedom fighters in Bengal and elsewhere, this museum has so much. And most importantly the entire surrounding of the place is so much serene with quiet natural ambience and the Ganga just behind the building. A must visit in Barrackpore.

Very well maintained and decorated with rare artifact, best part to see the epitome of ‘charkha’ (spinning wheel) – that represent true spirit of “Indianism”. That motivates every single Indians to use products of "Made in india". A good place for a half-day hangout, good to drive to the part of the town – Barrackpore. A must-see place!
