Beautifully maintained place. Beautiful gardens and ponds surrounding the white marble monument. Some of the sculptures are fabulous. The gardens open from 0530-6 in the early morning and that seems to be the best time to go nowadays. The sun is up and it's cool. The entry to the garden is Rs 20 per head. Toilets inside are well maintained. Lots of trash cans around to help people keep the gardens clean. The museum opens at 11 am. I've put lots of snaps.

The monument kind of construction in Kolkata in the name of Victoria memorial. Had many objects on display from the freedom fights like guns and swords and sharp knives used in riots at that time by Indian freedom fighters. Audio visual presentation makes it more captivating experience for interested visitors. Very well kept and maintained gardens and small ponds in the surrounding area makes the visit memorable for sure

Seeing such a beautiful building will blow your mind. The building looks very beautiful during the day and at night. It was evening when we visited. Lighting and sound shows in Bengali and English are held here every day except on weekends. The history of India and the history of the creation of Bangladesh after the division of Bengal are all in this 45 minute show. A very nice and clean environment. Ticket: Yes Wheelchair ♿ accessable for the inside please

Victoria Memorial is a British-era structure built entirely of white marble. A 16-ft-tall bronze statue, the figure of the Angel of Victory, stands atop the grand building. It’s mounted on ball bearings & revolves with the wind. Victoria Memorial is the signature building of Kolkata, which was once the capital of British-run India. It's another example of the intriguing mix of Indian and European architectural influences.

As we all know, Victoria memorial is a great historical architecture. It is an amazing experience to visit the museum. It enriched my knowledge very much. It is also a great photogenic place and hence draws the attention of many photographers. There is a security check at the entrance which ensures the security of the visitors. The reflection of the museum on the lake provides great photographs to the visitors. I would definitely recommend you to visit Victoria memorial at least once if you ever come to Kolkata.

Entry fee ₹30 per head No fee for camera. To reach Victoria Memorial, take any bus towards Theatre Road or cab from Howrah Station. You can enjoy the walk towards the gate to Victoria. Perfect time to reach here is afternoon. You can roam through the garden and wait for the sunset. At evening enjoy the beautiful reflection of Memorial in water. Light and Sound show us organized at evening and special ticket is required for it.

The Victoria Memorial is the most palatial structure that was constructed during the British Raj in India. The elegant memorial has hybrid features with Italian style statues near the entrance, Mughal domes and Other European styles of architecture is just a fabulous blend of architectural marvel. The Victoria Memorial also contains a museum which houses the art and artifacts of Victorian era. It also has a Collection of Oil paintings and Water Colour paintings of various European artists. After the Indian independence, portraits and relics relating to Indian independence found place in the museum. This place is so damn nice for satisfying your historic knowledge hunger. Friends, lovers, families all come here and spend time like themselves. One can enjoy the wonderful art scene in the tranquil green environment. There is drinking water and toilet facilities. The natural environment is very pleasant. The only drawback of visiting this place is, that the hall is very far away from the other main gate and you'll have to take a walk to the hall. So, It is a worth visiting place for the ones who are looking for a historic tour.

It is a great place to be with family and kids. Memorial is open till late afternoon. In evening don't miss the light and laser show. Keep an eye on concert schedule, it feels amazing to witness.

Victoria Memorial is one of the most famous landmarks monuments in Kolkata, it was built in remembrance of queen Victoria. The building is a beautiful site to watch along with the lawn wherein you can walk or enjoy a picnic. The entry fee is ₹50 if you wish to go inside the monument. It has a display about India's freedom struggle and about the freedom fighters. When you enter the main hall it looks so beautiful especially when you lift your head and see the dome. There are 2 floors in the building. At evening time there is a light and sound show around 6:30pm for which you need to buy the ticket separately.

A great historical place. The lake and other monuments were marvelous. This memorial is architectural beauty. This is a museum which was built to honour Queen Elizabeth. The place is good to visit with family, friends or even solo. The architecture is awe-inspiring and the garden around the place is maintained very nicely. The lakes and gardens surrounding the whole place make the atmosphere soothing and make you feel closer to nature and away from the noise of the city. There is a museum inside of it . There are too many items , weapons , manuscripts etc to watch which were used by our freedom fighters. There is also an art gallery. This magnificent monument cum museum stands as a reminder of the city’s colonial and architectural heritage. Apart from the magnificent edifice, the sprawling green lawns surrounding the memorial are an ideal place to hang out and go for morning walks in Kolkata. A must visit place if you are in your Kolkata trip. I visited in weekdays so did not notice any queue or waiting. But in weekends or public holidays more people might visit in this place.

Its a majestic landmark with impressive architecture and well-maintained gardens. The museum inside offers a fascinating glimpse into India's colonial history. However, some exhibits could benefit from more interactive elements. The audio guide enhances the experience, but a few areas lack proper signage. Overall, a splendid place for history enthusiasts and a picturesque spot for a leisurely stroll.

Victoria Memorial Hall is a very interesting place to visit. I am a historic lover and this place is just incredible. The lush green gardens as themselves very beautiful. Inside there is a museum with a lot of paintings, a display of armory, guns, and other things which are of great interest to anybody. It took me an awfully long time to really look at things and to crown it all and the magnificent statue of Queen Victoria takes your breath away. The Victoria looks even more beautiful by the night and the special sound and light show is held every evening at the gardens of the memorial. The only drawback of visiting this place is, that the hall is very far away from the other main gate and you'll have to take a walk to the hall. So, It is a worth visiting place for the ones who are looking for a historic tour.

It was a unique treat to be back here since my childhood. I went as early as possible to avoid the crowds. I suggest buying the composite tickets for ₹30/person which gives you access to both the gardens and the museum. I came at 8 A.M and spent two hours exploring the wonderful gardens, public toilets are clean and available within the garden area. The museum opens at 10 A.M & I was amazed at the quality of the Raj era paintings including possibly the world's largest painting. I thoroughly recommend it for lovers of architecture and landscape designs.

One of the landmark structures of Kolkata. Built in memory for queen Victoria over the span of 15 years from 1906-1921. Built completely in Makrana marble mined in Rajasthan. It comprises a memorial building and museums. Museums explain about the history of Kolkata and British colonial exploits over them. Total atmosphere is very calm and peaceful with meadows and lakes around it. Worth to spend a day with your family. It requires a entry ticket which is very minimal. Must visit place in Kolkata.

A lovey place to go to. Only 20 rupees to enter the garden area. Although entry to the museum needs another ticket from the counter. Overall very clear and very beautiful. Kudos to the maintenance. I had gone there during the day and mostly found tourists and couples hanging out there. And since the pandemic, it's not that crowded now. You can easily sit on the benches provided or walk around in the garden maintaining social distance. This is also a good place to chill and relax.

Its one of the most iconic places of Kolkata. Those who like to visit historical places will definitely love this. It was built around 100 years ago. Victoria Memorial has a huge architectural value. Its has been converted into a museum. Its made of white marble and is surrounded by lush green gardens. The entry fee is Rs. 20 which may have changed over time. Although you find a lot of couples here, it is a decent place to visit with family.

It's a beautiful place. But I visited it right after the Christmas so it was very crowded. Apart from the crowd it is a very beautiful place. The paintings and other art works are explained properly also they have guides and all. The greenery is very eye pleasing. If you are interested in history and likes museum you would like this place. A basic place for couples to hang out... there is a pond too which is also very pretty. My experience here was nice would like to revisit sometime but when there won't be this kuch crowd.

The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria, then Empress of India, and is now a museum and tourist destination under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The memorial lies on the Maidan (grounds) by the bank of the Hooghly River, near Jawaharlal Nehru Road (better known as Chowringhee Road) In front of this , there is a park for all. One can spend time with charming calm environment in busy Kolkata. The Victoria Memorial has 25 galleries. These include the royal gallery, the national leaders gallery, the portrait gallery, central hall, the sculpture gallery, the arms and armoury gallery and the newer, Calcutta gallery. The Victoria Memorial has the largest single collection of the works of Thomas Daniell (1749–1840) and his nephew, William Daniell (1769–1837).It also has a collection of rare and antiquarian books such as the illustrated works of William Shakespeare, the Arabian Nights and the Rubaiyat by Omar Khayyam as well as books about kathak dance and thumri music by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. However, the galleries and their exhibitions, the programmatic elements of the memorial do not compete with the purely architectural spaces or voids.

I was amazed by its beauty and grandeur. The entire white marble building stands in the middle of a lush green garden, surrounded by fountains and statues. The memorial has art galleries where one can see beautiful and old art pieces. They have displayed portraits, coins, pillars, arches and sculptures. You can also some of the personal belongings of Queen Victoria which were used by her. It is one of the landmark and signature locations of the City of Joy Kolkata. It is a must-visit place for all. It represents majestic British architecture. There is a huge park inside and it takes around 1.5 hours to visit the whole palace. One can spend time sitting in the park with the family and kids. The ticket price is 20₹ (keep a change) and weekdays are less crowded. Ticket Counter closed at 5 PM. There is availability of drinking water inside. In the evening, they also have a half an hour light show which starts at 6.30 pm and the ticket price is 100 per person. The ticket window opens at 6 p.m.

Iconic symbol of the city. I loved the place... It is one of the best heritage place in the middle of busy city. The best thing about this place is the wonderful architecture of the monument. Victoria Memorial is known worldwide built during British rule in India for the queen. Inside the memorial there is a museum where you can see the dresses of the queen.. There are different kinds of weapons which are kept over there that were used during that era. There are various other things as well that you can see..One can explore inside Victoria memorial. The structure of the memorial is just amazing and mesmerizing.. It is very attractive to look at. The chariot ride in front of the Victoria Memorial gives a memorable experience to all the person. The fountain show in front of the memorial is just awesome. Overall it's a perfect place for outing with friends and family.

Elegant domed shaped large marble building. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria, Empress of India from 1876 to 1901. Today, the memorial has been turned into a museum that has many galleries. It also houses paintings from the British Raj, along with memorabilia and manuscripts. Commodities used by the soldiers of the INA, founded by Subhash Chandra Bose, are preserved here. The building takes you back to ancient times of the British Raj. The park surrounding the building is a very relaxing and soothing place.

Kanchrapara railway station is a Kolkata Suburban Railway station in Kanchrapara on the Sealdah–Ranaghat line. It is situated in North 24 Parganas district, on the outskirts of Kolkata in the state of West Bengal, India. It mainly serves the Greater Kanchrapara town region and the surrounding areas. This is a considerably important station on the Sealdah-Ranaghat line because of the existence of the Kanchrapara Railway Workshop. There were plans of making this crowded station a junction stop, but this has not been initiated yet, mainly due to the less space available to expand the station. The distance between Sealdah railway station and Kanchrapara station is about 45 km.

The place is very beautiful... No doubt about that... Probably the most visited place in Kolkata... There's an entry fee of Rs. 20 if you only want to roam about the open area around the Monument... One piece of suggestion to the management... Please don't allow food to be taken inside... Neither the management should allow people to carry sporting kits inside... For people like us, It takes no time to turn such a beautiful place to a picnic spot... Rest everything is just immaculate.

There is really nothing to see inside. There are some historical and movement photos, newspaper cuttings and pistol rifles in two glass showcases and other things were not available which they have written in the back side of ticket. But the structures were beautiful. The white marble stone building looks good in the evening light. Foreign tourist 100 rupees Indian 30 rupees. The ticket collector forced me to pay more 60 rupees. Which in not a loss but an experience.

i had heard a lot about this place so it was a must go place in the list i loved the well maintained garden hall architecture and surrounding around this place you can spend couple of hours there , evening is best time to visit Truly an amazing collection of India’s glorious past. Loved the free guided tour , the tour guide Mr. Amrit gave a great overview on the artefacts and the historic details . If you are visiting Kolkata anytime and are interested in knowing about our glorious colonial and medieval era history , this is the place to be . I have visited here before a couple of times actually. This time was a night visit if you go before 8 pm it is lit up with different hues of colour. Worth seeing and good for photos. Had a splendid experience walking around the monument and learning about it's construction, the British era and the history of India between 1700s and 1950. The monument is grand and surrounded by beautiful lakes with some amazing Flora and Fauna. We also spent some time through the galleries depicting images from the bygone era and some regal paintings by British artists. It's a must visit for those who are interested in art history, architecture and the city of Kolkata.

Built in early nineteenth century in memory of Queen Victoria after her death is perhaps the most popular structure in Kolkata. The marble structure combines variety of architecture styles like Indian & British along with touch of Egyptian, Venetian & Mughal. A tour of building is very educative as you get glimpses of British colonial ruled period. The white marble structure reflects city’s colonial past.

A trip to Calcutta is incomplete without a trip to Victoria Memorial and a buggy ride like the roaylty itself outside the memorial. The building is well maintained and the surrounding gardens well manicured. The use of Greek columns on the eastern side lend a beautiful touch to the building. In the middle of this crowded city. Architecture of Victoria Memorial can remind Taj Mahal. Nice Night lightning of this monument is also a great piece of work. Victoria Memorial Hall surrounded by lovely manicured gardens is really amazing in this noisy and polluted town. On January 23, 2019, the Union government inaugurated a museum dedicated to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at Red Fort. The museum was inaugurated by PM Modi and the Bose family had gifted the cap to him for the archives.

I will share my personal experience in Victoria . Now before I proceed I want to tell you guys that never ever take your family to Victoria . It is a park for couples. I mean they take 20 rs per head and they allow everyone to come in . The environment is very bad as because maximum couples go their . It is a very bad place for families and children’s . The place is not at all clean and we can see couples cuddling and stuff like that everywhere you can possible imagine offf. I would never suggest someone to go to Victoria memorial specially to the families because it is horrible and it will be an awkward situation for them also .

The memorial is an example of good architecture but I feel very envious jealous and angry that how Britishers looted our country to put such a pomp and show off their kings and Queens and generals commanding the India even the queen Victoria's proclamation very much irritates me I strongly feel that these monuments of colonial Era must be changed into some Indian colour and Indian ambience to erase the bad memory of that colonial era

One of the best place to visit in Calcutta. This is in the honour of Victoria queen .this is located alongside of river in Calcutta. The ticket is 20 rs for Victoria memorial and 50 rs for museum.one of the best memories of queen who ruled the world the queen victoria. The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria, then Empress of India, and is now a museum under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The memorial lies on the Maidan, near Jawaharlal Nehru Road (also known as Chowringhee Road). The Victoria Memorial's architect was William Emerson (1843–1924), president of the Royal Institute of British Architects. The design is in the Indo-Saracenic revivalist style which uses a mixture of British and Mughal elements with Venetian, Egyptian, Deccani and Islamic architectural influences. The building is 338 by 228 feet (103 by 69 m) and rises to a height of 184 feet (56 m). It is constructed of white Makrana marble. The gardens of the Victoria Memorial were designed by Lord Redesdale and David Prain. Emerson's assistant, Vincent Jerome Esch, designed the bridge of the north aspect and the garden gates. In 1902, Emerson engaged Esch to sketch his original design for the Victoria Memorial. After designing the temporary exhibition building for the Delhi Durbar of 1903, Curzon found Esch to be a suitable assistant for Emerson. If you are in Calcutta you have to visit this palace once.

Iconic symbol of the city. I loved the place... It is one of the best heritage place in the middle of busy city. The best thing about this place is the wonderful architecture of the monument. Victoria Memorial is known worldwide built during British rule in India for the queen. Inside the memorial there is a museum where you can see the dresses of the queen.... There are different kinds of weapons which are kept over there that were used during that era. There are various other things as well that you can see .....One can explore inside Victoria memorial. The structure of the memorial is just amazing and mesmerizing.... It is very attractive to look at. The chariot ride in front of the Victoria Memorial gives a memorable experience to all the person. The fountain show in front of the memorial is just awesome. Overall it's a perfect place for outing with friends and family.

The place was easy to locate on maps and the navigation was accurate. (I took a cab, so don’t know about parking facilities) Victoria Memorial is a famous spot and landmark for tourists visiting Kolkata, and is beneficial for learning about its historical importance. There are lawns for picnics etc and the water bodies around the memorial are well maintained. Inside the memorial, you can find exhibits of statues and oil paintings and their descriptions in a museum-like fashion. The place can get really crowded during events like Christmas etc, so planning might be required. Photography is allowed inside without charges. Overall, this place is worth a visit.

Mughal domes and Other European styles of architecture is just a fabulous blend of architectural marvel. After the Indian independence, portraits and relics relating to Indian independence found place in the museum. The Victoria Memorial is the most palatial structure that was constructed during the British Raj in India. The elegant memorial has hybrid features with Italian style statues near the entrance, This place is so damn nice for satisfying your historic knowledge hunger.

The ticket price is 30 (keep a change) and weekdays are less crowded. Ticket Counter closed at 5 PM. There is availability of drinking water inside. In the evening, they also have a half an hour light show which starts at 6.30 pm and the ticket price is 100 per person. The ticket window opens at 6 p.m.

Well I have been visiting there since 1993 onwards almost every alternative year or so, the place is vast and beautiful, earlier the upper levels were accessible but it has been closed for public. The upper levels had some really cool artifacts that are now not on display, a security guard told me that all those artifacts are stolen or maybe sold to British as its their heritage. The place is good for picnic with family and friends. But since there is not much activity to do here. Usually half a day trip is best Here. The place is well connected via all modes of transport. Visit there when it's overcast or hard winter you will enjoy most.

Victoria Memorial is one of the famous and beautiful monuments of Kolkata. It was built between 1906 and 1921 to commemorate Queen Victoria's 25-year reign in India. After the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, the British government gathered the reins of control of the country directly, and in 1876 the British parliament made Victoria the Empress of India. Her reign ended with her death in 1901. The Victoria Memorial is possibly the most awesome reminder of the Raj to be found in India. This huge white-marble museum, made from Makrana marbles from Rajasthan, is filled with a vast collection of remnants from the period of British Empire rule in India. The forms in the museum like the great dome, clustered with four subsidiary, octagonal domed chattris, the high portals, the terrace and the domed corner towers speak of a splendid richness in architecture. The Memorial is situated on 64 acres of land with the building covering 338 ft by 228 ft. Lord Curzon, who was then the Viceroy of India, placed the question of setting up a 'stately' memorial for Queen Victoria, on her death in January 1901 to the public. The princes and people of India responded generously to his appeal for funds and Lord Curzon derived the total cost of construction of this monument amounting to one crore, five lakhs of rupees (Rs.1,05,00,000) from their voluntary subscriptions. The Prince of Wales, King George V, laid the foundation stone on January 4, 1906 and it was formally opened to the public in 1921. The Victoria Memorial is a landmark in the history of Indian architecture and the credit for that justly goes to Lord Curzon who chose persons like Sir William Emerson, President of the British Institute of Architects, to design and plan the building and entrust the construction work to the very famous Messrs. Martin & Co. of Calcutta. This grandiloquent structure presently houses a museum of British India memorabilia like a large collection of oil paintings and water colours by famous European artists like Charles D'oyly, Johann Zoffany, William Hadges, William Simpson, Tilly Kettle, Thomas Hickey, Bultzar Solvyns, Thomas Hickey, Emily Eden and others. Besides these, the Memorial also houses the largest collection in the world of the paintings by the Daniells. The Royal Gallery is a storehouse of oil paintings of Queen Victoria receiving the sacrament at her coronation in the Westminster Abbey in June 1838; her marriage with Prince Albert (1840), the christening of the Prince of Wales, the marriage of the Prince of Wales (Edward VII) with Princess Alexandra and others. The Memorial's grandeur at a height of 200 feet (184 ft up to the base of the figure of Victory, which is again 16 ft high) is accentuated by the serenity that engulfs you in its corridors. The groups of figures above the north porch represent Motherhood, Prudence and Learning. Surrounding the main dome are figures of Art, Architecture, Justice, Charity etc.

The Victoria Memorial Hall was built in memory of the Queen Victoria by the then Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. The memorial celebrated the 25 year reign of the queen over India. She became the figure head of India after the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 and ruled till her death in 1901. Lord Curzon wanted to demonstrate his gratitude by dedicating a monument to her and the stunning Victoria Memorial of Kolkata was constructed. The design of Victoria Memorial is based on what is known as the Indo-Saracenic revivalist style that uses a blend of architecture styles lent from Egyptian, Mughal, British, Deccani, Islamic and even Venetian elements. This becomes apparent by its great dome, the chattris that is octagonal domed in shape, corner towers that are domed again and the terrace.

After being under construction for 15 years, the memorial was ready to be visited by public in 1921. The construction work of the memorial was given to Messrs. Martin & Co., Calcutta. The memorial has been constructed using funds of about 10 million rupees, contributed by the Indian princely states. Architecture The memorial has been designed in white Makrana marble following the Indo-Saracenic revivalist architectural style. A product of Mughal, Deccani, British, Egyptian, Venetian, as well as Islamic designs, the white memorial was under the architectural supervision of William Emerson, the president of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Emerson also had the credit of designing the Crawford Market in Mumbai. The bridge of the north and the garden gates have been designed by Vincent J. Esch, the assistant of William Emerson. On the top of the central dome is a figure of 'Angel of Victory'. It is a 4.9-metre-tall statue and weighs five tonnes. Royal Gallery The gallery has numerous paintings by Jansen and Winterhalter, depicting scenes from the lives of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The treasured artifacts at the gallery include: A piano that was gifted to Victoria in 1829 when she was 10 years old. The piano is famous as the grand piano. Recently the piano has been shifted to the central gallery of the Victoria Memorial.A writing desk which was used by Queen Victoria at the Windsor Castle. The Jaipur Procession: It is the third-biggest oil painting in the world. It depicts King Edward VII visiting his state in 1876. Some of the paintings depict: Victoria receiving the sacrament at her coronation in Westminster Abbey in June 1838.Victoria's marriage to Albert at St. James' Palace in 1840.The christening of the Prince of Wales ((Edward VII) in St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle in 1842.Marriage of the Prince of Wales to Princess Alexandra in 1863.The First Jubilee service at Westminster Abbey in 1887.The Second Jubilee service at St. Paul's Cathedral in 1897. Calcutta gallery The Calcutta Gallery at the Victoria Memorial is the first city gallery of India. The initiative to set up the gallery was taken up by the then Education Minister of India, Prof. S. Nurul Hasan with the aim to attract intellectuals from all over the world to the memorial.

This is the first time i went to Victoria memorial kolkata. Due to covid they have given a fixed time and some regulations which you need to follow. It is open now and the tickets for the entry are 30rs per person. You can see the beauty of the indian artisians as they have created this magnificent building. Inside you would see many more informative paintings and collections of the early britishers. It's a really good place for all to get knowledge about. They have beautiful oil, water and pencil paintings as well. You cannot click pictures inside. Note: kids below 10 years are not allowed the museum. They are allowed in the park but not inside the museum.

The Victoria Memorial Hall, or Victoria Memorial, is a memorial to Queen Victoria. It is located on the banks of the Hooghly River in the city of Calcutta. Its construction started in 1906 and it was inaugurated in 1921. There are huge doors on both the north and south sides of this building. Inside there is a beautiful garden. Built on about 64 acres of land, the building is 103.02 meters long and 69.49 meters wide. This building is made entirely of white stone. It is now a National Museum and one of the most important tourist attractions in Kolkata. This is the most beautiful place in Kolkata. When I visited it I was very surprised to see its construction and surroundings. The authorities always keep it very tidy. There are separate tickets for the entrance to the garden and the main building. At that time the ticket price per person was 10 rupees for Indians and 200 rupees for foreigners. This beautiful place is still fresh in my mind.

Beautiful architecture from the British India era. The hall consists of a museum and displays various artifacts which are great for historical knowledge. The place consists of the throned Queen Victoria's statue. I visited on a public holiday so it was very very crowdy. I'd suggest to visit on a weekday as it is anyway a highly popular as well as populated tourist destination.

One of the most iconic historical place in kolkata. Now a newly build museum inside the Victoria memorial hall where it shows all the sacrifice of the freedom fighter is a great way to showcase what it took for us to get our freedom. The place is huge and if you are planning to visit then do wear sport shoes and keep a water bottle handy. Ticket Counter closed at 5 PM. Weekdays is less crowded and if you are outside during the sunset you will be able to capture some breathtaking view of the sunset with the place. Place has entry and exit point which needs to followed while entering.

One of most overrated monuments in kolkata according to me. Maybe a fan of Architecture and history would love this place but otherwise it's not that great. Although the ambience is quite good when compared to other places. One can take a taxi or cab to reach this place. It takes a maximum of an hour to see the whole place. Parking is available. Ticket is a bit overpriced. Only visit this if you have plenty of time.

The Victoria Memorial Hall is one of the most magnificent monuments of not only the city of Calcutta but of our entire country. Representing the resplendent and majestic British architecture, Victoria Memorial Hall stands today, as a veritable icon of the city of Kolkata. Located on 1 Queen’s way, the VMH was envisaged by Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of British India, as a memorial to the deceased Queen Victoria. Hence, according to Curzon this memorial should take form of a great marble hall, which was to be erected on the Calcutta maidan to serve primarily as a monument to the Queen and secondarily as a national gallery and Valhalla of the Indian Empire. The national gallery which Curzon speaks about would in future take the shape of a museum. The Victoria Memorial hall was therefore set up to function more than just a memorial for the deceased Queen Victoria. The memorial was to be designed with a museum housed within its realms. The  memorial with the museum would act as  a “standing record of our wonderful history” This was to be a historical museum where people could see before them pictures and statues of men who played a prominent part in the history of this country and develop a pride in their past. Curzon’s writing bring forth that it was a part of his imperial duty to put into execution to set up a “Great Imperial memorial worthy of Queen Victoria and worthy of India. Within few weeks after Queen’ death in January 1901 a great meeting was convened in the Town Hall of Calcutta on 6th February, 1901, whereby a resolution for constituting an all Indian Memorial Fund for building of the memorial was moved. The princes and people of India responded Architects generously to his appeal for funds and the total cost of construction of this monument amounting to one crore, five lakhs of rupees, was entirely derived from their voluntary subscriptions. King George V, the then Prince of Wales, laid the foundation stone on January 4, 1906 and it was formally opened to the public in 1921. William Emerson, the then president of the Royal Institute of British Architects was the chief architect of the memorial that was designed in Indo-Saracenic revivalist style. The style encompassed a blend of British architectural style with that of Egyptian, Venetian, Deccani, Mughal and other Islamic styles. Build of Makrana marble brought from Jodhpur, Rajasthan, it measures 103 m by 69 m with a height of 56 m. Scottish physician and botanist Sir David Prain and Lord Redesdale were entrusted to design the vast garden areas covering 64 acres while garden gates and the bridge of the north aspect were designed by Vincent J. Esch. Messrs. The garden is presently maintained by a group of 21 gardeners. Martin & Co. of Calcutta carried out the construction work of the memorial. Certain additions were made to the memorial post independence of India.

The gardens at the Victoria memorial are covered of 64 acres (260,000 m2). They are maintained by a team of 21 gardeners. They were designed by Redesdale and David Prain. On Esch's bridge, between narrative panels by Goscombe John, there is a bronze statue of Victoria, by George Frampton. Victoria is seated on her throne, wearing the robes of the Star of India. In the paved quadrangles and elsewhere around the building, other statues commemorate Hastings, Charles Cornwallis (1st Marquess Cornwallis), Robert Clive, Arthur Wellesley, and James Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie. Approaching the Victoria Memorial building from the south, visitors pass the Edward VII memorial arch. Upon the arch is a bronze equestrian statue of Edward VII by Bertram Mackennal and a marble statue of Curzon by Frederic William Pomeroy. The garden contains statues of dignitaries such as Lord William Bentinck, governor-general of India (1833–1835), George Robinson (1st Marquess of Ripon), governor-general of India (1880–84), and Rajendra Nath Mookerjee, a pioneer industrialist of Bengal.

Victoria memorial one of the best historical place in Kolkata. The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria (1819–1901) and is now a museum and tourist destination under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The memorial lies on the Maidan (grounds) by the bank of the Hooghly River, near Jawaharlal Nehru Road (better known as Chowringhee Road). It's most beautiful, peaceful place in Kolkata. Everyone love this place. I love this place. In January 1901, on the death of Queen Victoria, The 1st Baron Curzon of Kedleston (later created The 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston), the then Viceroy of India, suggested the creation of a fitting memorial. Lord Curzon proposed the construction of a grand building with a museum and gardens. The building is 338 feet (103 m) by 228 feet (69 m) and rises to a height of 184 feet (56 m). Atop the central dome of the Victoria Memorial is the 16 ft (4.9 m) figure of the Angel of Victory. Surrounding the dome are allegorical sculptures including Art, Architecture, Justice, and Charity and above the North Porch are Motherhood, Prudence and Learning. The Victoria Memorial is built of white Makrana marble.  In design it echos the Taj Mahal with its dome, four subsidiaries, octagonal-domed chattris, high portals, terrace, and domed corner towers. The Victoria Memorial has 25 galleries. These include the royal gallery, the national leaders gallery, the portrait gallery, central hall, the sculpture gallery, the arms and armoury gallery and the newer, Calcutta gallery. The Victoria Memorial has the largest single collection of the works of Thomas Daniell (1749–1840) and his nephew, William Daniell (1769–1837). It also has a collection of rare and antiquarian books such as the illustrated works of William Shakespeare, the Arabian Nights and the Rubaiyat by Omar Khayyam as well as books about kathak dance and thumri music by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last ruler of Awadh. However, the galleries and their exhibitions, the programmatic elements of the memorial do not compete with the purely architectural spaces or voids.

It's charismatic beauty and inside historical heritage remains as a special attraction for me for years, from my childhood I went there many times and find this place truly beautiful. Many people just like to spend their time outside because there are beautiful trees 🎄🌴 all around the places but I would highly recommend anyone not just history lovers but to all kinds of people to visit the inside of the Victoria Memorial. It is not like any other museum but it's a very special of its kinds of heritage within a historic place there is rare in India. I have visited more than 35 major museum of India, Thailand and USA but it is not just a museum but something more to offer. Last but not the least the surrounding places definitely would make your day if you plan to visit Kolkata, many other attraction is very nearby.

Kanchrapara railway station is a Kolkata Suburban Railway station in Kanchrapara on the Sealdah-Ranaghat line.

The vastness and splendour of Victoria Memorial can be comprehended from the fact that it has been divided into different divisions like the garden, library and others for maintenance and also houses a host of valuable articles like the dagger of Tipu Sultan, a cannon used in the battle of Plassey, rare books that date back to 1870, valuable manuscripts like the Ain-i-Akbari by Abul Fazal, rare postage stamps and Western paintings to entice the visitors to this awesome monument.

Visit to Kolkata is incomplete without visiting the Victoria Memorial. This monument is the trade mark of Kolkata. The place is open now. The garden area is accessible to everyone until 5pm everyday. But due to the corona situation the museum is restricted for children under ten years of age. Go there in the afternoon and spend two hours to feel the vibes of the City of Joy.

You already know who is this and whom he's holding in his arms. She's none other than Mr. Irrfan Khan's beloved wife. This picture was taken long ago when Irrfan had just started his career in films. He has done films like, "Life in a Meteo", "Piku", "Jurassic World", "Billu", "Life of Pie", "Tiffin Box", "Zid". The famous Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" movie was first offered to Irrfan, although he reject the film as because he was engaged with his "Hindi Medium".

It is a museum also inside the building and there is places for live exhibition of historical freedom movement. Garden is spread in a large and wide area. Man made lakes and water fountain are there. Outside the place there is so many shops, but a little bit costly than usual price. Entry fee for the garden is 20 Rs only, and the museum along with garden is 30 Rs per person. We didn't know that Victoria Memorial closes at 6:00 PM. I would suggest going there after lunch to spend quality time there. It's advisable that you visit this place when the weather is not hot like June. It was unexpectedly hot in Kolkata in June (mostly humidity). The museum is nice, also the structure itself looks classic. It's worth visiting with your family.

Its grandeur and meticulously maintained gardens offer a serene escape in the heart of the city. However, the crowds during peak hours might hinder the full experience. The museum inside provides valuable insights into history, though some may find the collection limited. Overall, it's a must-visit landmark that captures the essence of an era gone by.

Its a historical landmark and one of the most visited places in Kolkata. The architecture of this museum is at the finest. Basically an architecture of a bygone era. Nowadays we don't find such kind of architecture in the modern world. The whole museum is surrounded bt beautiful parks, fountains and statues of leaders of the past. The museum is mainly dedicated to the British rule and our struggle for independence. Along with photos of the leaders of British Raj, you will find pictures of our heroes (Especially people belonging to Eastern India) who sacrificed everything for our country. Weapons, newspapers, flags are also under display. If you love history then you must visit this museum.

This memorial is architectural beauty. A must visit place if you are in your Kolkata trip. Beauty differs in day time and night time. Recommend going in the afternoon so that you can enjoy the beauty both in daylight and night time. I visited it after sunset. That time the perfectly placed lights made the memorial look even more mesmerizing but could not enjoy the greenery of front part lake. I visited in weekdays so did not notice any queue or waiting. But in weekends or public holidays more people visit this place.

There is also a gallery where many things are restored during the Victorian era.The most disappointing thing is there is no facility to book tickets online. I have visited Jaipur & Delhi where every archaeological structure tickets are maintained by the archaeological survey of India but here we don't get that facility.

This is a not-to-miss experience in Kolkata. You can plan one complete day here. The area is lush and serene. Eating options inside are alright, all snacky. Enough green cover to stretch a leg or two, although some third class couples in the park do ruin the zen with their cheap indecency. The memorial itself is grand and photogenic from all the angles. Inside, you really get to know some interesting facts about British era lifestyle (area could use some cleancliness though), tech (liked that first-ever laid radio line wire), weaponry, and that Queen's practice piano! DO NOT miss the first floor. Its got some really priceless letters written by our star freedom fighters and lots of independence-era memories you'll enjoy.

One of the best place in the city, the lush green fields, the pond all around, the flowers, the trees everything is perfect for a everything. It is all rounder place for everyone 😉😉. If you are in a relationship than it is the best place to hold your partners hands and take a walk around the garden, if you are a photographer than you will get plenty of shots, to capture, if you are broken, then you can just beside the pond and enjoy the silence and the beauty, so that your heart recharges itself for the next battle. But a request to the couples, please don't cross the limits because there are plenty to people, around to just see you doing those things and they even tend to record your pleasure moments, so be careful from those people.

Victoria Memorial in Kolkata needs no introduction. On my first trip to this wonderful place brimming with Art, Culture, Poetry, Food and Heritage.. can sum up my first look impressions with Ace Filmmaker Guru Dutt’s words (from the classic ‘Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam’) that crossed my mind at that moment- “Pehli baar jab Calcutta aaya aur iss haweli ko dekha.. kya shaan thi”.. aur kya log thae Two hours at Victoria Memorial is nothing.. next time will need to devote atleast two full days! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🌹🌹🌹 look forward to visiting again 😍

Victoria Memorial is an iconic place in Kolkata, it it basically famous for its design and architecture, Mainly it is a construction of marble. It is located in maidan mainly known as chowringee road, Except a building there was a very good and awesome looking garden and a beautiful small pond.. and everywhere in the park lots of small stone on the floor. Inside the memorial there are lots of historical things are there for example Guns that was used in the first world war and second world war, statue of UK queen Elizabeth, and lots of English rulery statue. There are lots of galleries in the Memorial like ART GALLERY, DESIGN GALLERY, Statue gallery and many nore.. The design of the inside of the memorial is also looking good. The Victoria Memorial has some very strict rules and regulations that are indian residents have to pay only less than 50 rupees while a foreigner have to pay approx 500 rupees.. I want to recommend you that whenever you come Kolkata you should come to Victoria Memorial because it a enjoyable place, you will feel good and charm... Hope you enjoy my review :)

One of most beautiful place to explore, "the Victoria memorial located in kolkata. It's infrastructure and interior design is sharply covered with edges of marble. It's architecture is so fine and beautiful which is more appreciable than today's technology , entering inside it contains ancient oil painting large heavy size of weapons around 80-90 kg of each with size of 5-6feet long along with king dress and chair (the fashionable wear of that time).

It is a great place of pass time, leisure playing , to understand each other and feeling for past. Sit in front of the monument and think for some moment, an invisible time machine take to the Victorian era. You would see the darwar of Queen Victoria. That was unthinkable greatness. A great hearted man, whose thinking is so broad , can only set up this type of great monument. People like us can't even imagine to build up a palace even in our mind. Nea nationalist are trying to abolish the every sign of foreign ruler. It may be seen that it has been broken down to earth. May God save us and Victoria Memorial.

Magnificent architecture The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria, then Empress of India, and is now a museum under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The memorial lies on the Maidan, near Jawaharlal Nehru Road .

Victoria Memorial When was it built: Built between 1906 to 1921 Who built it: Conceptualised by George Curzon, Viceroy of India Where is it located: Kolkata, West Bengal, India Why was it built: To commemorate Queen Victoria Architectural Style: Indo-Saracenic revivalist style Visiting Hours: 10am-5pm (Monday-Sunday) How to Reach: Located in the metro city of Kolkata which is well-connected with several national and international cities. The Victoria Memorial, a huge monument made of white marble located in the heart of the City of Joy, Kolkata (erstwhile Calcutta) in West Bengal, India is one of the most famous monuments in West Bengal that has become a museum and popular tourist spot of the state. A brainchild of George Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston and Viceroy of India, this monument epitomising beauty and elegance was dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria (1819–1901). This grand and exquisite memorial not only stands as reminiscence to the rule of British Crown in the Indian subcontinent but also stands out as an excellent architectural gem in Indo-Saracenic revivalist style. It is a must visit tourist destination for first time visitors to experience the essence of Victorian era in the midst of the bustling metro city of Kolkata. Queen Victoria who remained Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland since June 20, 1837 and Empress of India since May 1, 1876 passed away on January 22, 1901. Following her demise, Lord Curzon conceived the idea of constructing a colossal and grand building with a museum and gardens where one and all can have a glimpse of the rich past. The foundation stone of the monument was laid on January 4, 1906 by the Prince of Wales George V who later became King George V on May 6, 1910. In 1921, the memorial was opened to public; however it became part of a provincial city instead of the capital city as by the time its construction completed, the capital of India was transferred from Calcutta to New Delhi under the instruction of King George V. An appeal made by Curzon to fund the construction of the memorial saw many including royals, individuals as well as the British government in London to come forward and contribute voluntarily. The total cost of building the memorial came to Rs. 105, 00,000.

Designed in a mixture of Italian Renaissance and Saracenic styles, surrounded by extensive, carefully manicured gardens, and preceded by a typically sober statue of Victoria herself, it remains a major symbol of the British Raj as well as that of Kolkata itself. Inside the building is an excellent museum of the history of Kolkata and various Raj-related exhibits, including Queen Victoria's writing desk and piano, Indian miniature paintings, watercolors, and Persian books. Cameras and electronic equipment must be left at the entrance. In the evenings there's a sound-and-light show, with narration in English, about Kolkata's history. The lawns are used by locals, especially during winter, for family picnics and joyrides on horse-drawn carriages.

One of my favourite place. If you have spare time definitely go there and take a short break. Sit on the ground inside the Victoria memorial garden. If you want to spend some special time with your special one go and spend some magical time with this historical era of love. You can easily spend 2-3 hours by rounding up this large garden and explore the beauty. Are you can spend three to four hour easily by visiting inside the museum.

Kanchrapara railway station is a Kolkata Suburban Railway station in Kanchrapara on the Sealdah–Ranaghat line. It is situated in North 24 Parganas district, on the outskirts of Kolkata in the state of West Bengal, India. It mainly serves the Greater Kanchrapara town region and the surrounding areas.[1] This is a considerably important station on the Sealdah-Ranaghat line because of the existence of the Kanchrapara Railway Workshop. There were plans of making this crowded station a junction stop, but this has not been initiated yet, mainly due to the less space available to expand the station. The distance between Sealdah railway station and Kanchrapara station is about 45 km.

''Victoria Memorial is one of the famous and beautiful monuments of Kolkata".

Victoria Memorial Victoria Memorial is one of the famous and beautiful monuments of Kolkata.

The place is beautiful it has a huge green landscape to sit and play with family. There is a museum inside which has preserved the dresses, tools etc of freedom fighters. The entry ticket is Rs 30 for garden and museum and Rs 20 for only garden for Indian nationals. The place is closed on Monday But few shortcomings which I felt 1. There is no parking space available so if you are coming via own vehicle plan accordingly, the place to park which I found is St cathedral church which is at 1 km distance. 2. It is really suffocating in the museum as there are no ventilation, not even fans. Overall it was a nice experience

Awesome place for one day tour. Historic place. William Emerson, the then President of the Royal Institute of British Architects was the chief architect of Victoria Memorial, and built it out of white Makrana marble, sourced from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India. He was assisted by supervising architect, Vincent Esch. The architecture of the heritage monument is based on Indo- Saracenic revivalist style with a mix of influences from Egyptian, Venetian, Deccan and Islamic elements. The construction of the memorial was commissioned to Messrs, Martin & Co. of Calcutta. The memorial stands at a height of 200 feet including 16 feet height of the ‘Angel of Victory’ placed on top of the central dome. The ‘Angel of Victory’ is mounted on huge ball bearings on top of the central dome which rotate with the wind. Four allegorical sculptures namely, Art, Architecture, Justice and Charity surround the central dome. Three more allegorical structures, Motherhood, Learning and Prudence, are placed just above the front façade or north porch. All the allegorical sculptures were sculpted in and shipped from Italy. The royal coat of arms is sculpted just above the arched entrance of the gallery. The central dome has four subsidiary octagonal domed chhatris clustered at lower level and four domed towers at four corners of the edifice along with high portals and roof. Two massive marble lion statues at the main entrance of memorial grounds represent power. A colossal bronze statue of the Queen Empress stands a few metres away from the main entrance of the garden grounds. The bronze statue was sculpted in England by Sir George Frampton and shipped all the way to India. Coming to the design of Victoria Memorial Gardens, the lustrous lawns and gardens encircling the memorial were designed by Lord Redesdale and David Prain. Vincent Esch, Emerson’s supervising architect, went on to design the most interesting parts of the heritage structure – the bridge of north aspect and garden gates. There are two large pools that adorn the memorial gardens.

Best for spending quality time with family. Also, famous among couples. Its surrounding garden area is also beautiful. Apart from these, there is a Museum inside Victoria Memorial. Good place to spend some time and admire old world charm of Kolkata from British era. The museum itself has good variety of artifacts and collection to go through if you have interest. Weekends get very crowded here. Tickets are extremely cheap for Indians.

If you want to count your steps along with exploring the Tremendous construction this place will be worthy. Very huge radius this place approximately take complete two hours to cove all the four corners. And the Royal outer view of this place can't explained in words . Inside this memorial you can find so many national freedom moments glimpse especially Netaji's contribution. I visited this place at the beginning of Monsoon season When I stepped inside this place it was extremely hot and sunny later at th very next moment I came of the place there was heavy rain continued for hours.

The outer grounds are clean and good for a day's picnic in the vast gardens. Inside only the main hall architecture is worth seeing, rest are the artifacts related to the history of the place. If you are someone genuinely interested in knowing the history then you can go inside otherwise it can be skipped. Mondays closed!!

57 acres of land with an ample amount of greenery and water bodies to spend your loved ones, easily spend 2-3 hours. The memorial building is a good place to understand who the Indian helped the British to rule India for 200 years. I highly recommend taking a free guided tour of the memorial. They have one every 30 minutes. The guide ( Swastika) has good knowledge on this subject and is patient enough to answer even silliest questions.

Compliments to the team for putting up a wonderful sound and light show. Was expecting better in terms of ticket sale which is still hard copy on a window sale, which needed an Explorers Eye to locate the Sale point. Better Q management to enter the complex with seat nos would have been comforting and helped enjoy the show Stress Free though running and locating empty seats made us fitter. Last but not the least, signage for each activity would have really helped. Thanks Victoria team for putting up the great show.

The Victoria Memorial in Kolkata is a magnificent architectural marvel that seamlessly blends British and Mughal influences. Constructed between 1906 and 1921, this white marble structure stands as a testament to the colonial history of India. The memorial was commissioned in memory of Queen Victoria and is situated on the Maidan grounds. The exterior of the memorial is adorned with intricate carvings, portraying scenes from Indian history and showcasing a fusion of Indo-Saracenic and Renaissance architectural styles. The lush gardens surrounding the memorial provide a serene atmosphere for visitors. Inside, the museum exhibits a rich collection of artifacts, paintings, and sculptures from the colonial era. The Hall of Fame within the memorial displays portraits and busts of prominent personalities from the British Raj, offering a glimpse into India's past. The Royal Gallery showcases a stunning collection of Queen Victoria's personal belongings, including her writing desk and chair. The Light and Sound show in the evening is a captivating experience, narrating the history of Kolkata and the memorial itself. The illuminated structure against the night sky creates a mesmerizing spectacle. Overall, the Victoria Memorial is not just a historical monument but also a cultural treasure. It provides a comprehensive view of India's colonial history and serves as a peaceful retreat in the heart of bustling Kolkata. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply seeking a tranquil escape, a visit to the Victoria Memorial is a must.

The marble used to construct the building comes from the same Makrana quarries in Rajasthan that were used for the construction of the Taj Mahal, and the corner domes are faintly Mughal in style. The whole composition is crowned by a bronze statue of the Angel of Victory that stands 16 feet (4.9 m) high; though not a true weather vane, it rotates when the wind is strong enough. The sides of the memorial are linked by open colonnades and in the south entrance, approached through a triumphal archway commemorating King Edward VII, there is a statue of Lord Curzon himself. The entrance hall contains bronze busts and marble statues of royal figures, and the walls are decorated with murals showing scenes from Queen Victoria’s life and texts from her imperial proclamations. The interior rooms display important collections of paintings, sculpture, artifacts, books, and manuscripts, all relating to royalty and empire.

The place gets very crowded on weekends, it's better to visit on weekdays. This magnificent monument cum museum stands as a reminder of the city’s colonial and architectural heritage. Apart from the magnificent edifice, the sprawling green lawns surrounding the memorial are an ideal place to hang out and go for morning walks in Kolkata.
