This is the second RBI museum in the country. I had the opportunity to visit this museum as a part of general public. I found that the displays have been organised into three main galleries. First one -The History of Money explains how economies grew after money replaced the barter system. Various objects used as money – including grains, salt, cowries and even giant stones – are on display. The second gallery called Story of Gold and it also features a full scale vault for demonstrating how gold is handled and stored. The third gallery is Genesis of RBI where one can learn about the history of RBI. Some old machines used for minting of coins and printing of bonds and stapling of currency notes can also be seen. Apart from these galleries, there is a gaming zone on the first floor on the theme of money, targeted mainly at children. There is a small sale counter near the entrance, where one can purchase some souvenirs of one’s visit to the museum, including artefacts made from shredded currency notes. A great place to spend an hour or two. Here is a no entry fee, so you do not have to part with your money to gain knowledge about money.

This is The Reserve Bank of India Museum. Money is an intrinsic component of the cultural heritage of a country mirroring its socio-economic history. India was one of the earliest issuers of coinage in the world and has been home to many-a-monetary experiment recorded in history. The Museum will immerse you in a one-of-a-kind experience that explains the money, its role in the economy and your role in it, in a fun and interactive way.You can also explore how money has evolved over the centuries, how and why gold still holds an important place in our society and also about the genesis of RBI.The RBI Monetary Museum aims at documenting and preserving this heritage. The Museum proposes to put in place permanent, temporary and itinerant exhibits of the representative coinage of India, paper currency, gold bars as well as financial instruments and curiosities down the ages.

RBI The interior decoration of the museum is very good. Very advanced technology. Various events are explained very nicely through videos. Bengali, Hindi, English in three languages. Free entry. No waiting time. Everyone can go & see how beautifully each & everything is displayed & maintained. You will see the revolution of currencies of different countries. In 1st floor there is games for the kids that are very informative & interesting at the same time. Clean & tidy. From the colonial era to the modern banking system, the exhibits provide a comprehensive overview of the country's economic journey. The currency gallery is undoubtedly the highlight, featuring a captivating assortment of coins and banknotes that reflect the diverse cultures and historical periods of India. The rare coins, including those from ancient civilizations, Mughal emperors, and the British colonial era, left me mesmerized. One of the museum's strengths is its commitment to interactive learning. The touch-screen panels and audio-visual presentations engage visitors in an educational and entertaining manner. The "Monetary Policy" section, where visitors can simulate the role of the RBI Governor and make policy decisions, was a standout. It provided a glimpse into the complex decision-making process that impacts the country's economy. Additionally, the real-time stock market ticker and interactive quizzes made learning about economics and finance enjoyable and accessible. The RBI Museum beautifully encapsulates the historical significance of the central bank and its role in shaping India's financial landscape. Engaging narratives, photographs, and personal accounts of individuals associated with the RBI shed light on the institution's pivotal moments, including its establishment in 1935 and its role during India's struggle for independence. The section dedicated to the history of the RBI building itself, a colonial-era architectural marvel, added depth to the overall experience. The museum's ambience is serene and conducive to learning. The well-designed layout and ample spacing between exhibits ensure that visitors can navigate comfortably. Adequate lighting and clear signage enhance the viewing experience. The museum is easily accessible, located in proximity to major landmarks in Kolkata, making it convenient for both locals and tourists. Overall, the Reserve Bank of India Museum in Kolkata is a treasure trove for history buffs, finance enthusiasts, and curious minds alike. Its meticulous curation of exhibits, interactive learning opportunities, and historical insights create an educational experience that is both captivating and enlightening. While it may have some areas to enhance, the museum's commitment to preserving and showcasing India's financial heritage is commendable. A visit to this museum is not just an exploration of the past but an understanding of the economic forces that have shaped the nation.

Established in 1935, the Reserve Bank of India started operating from this building. Built by Martin & Burn, the same company that built the Victoria Memorial & the Ochterlony Memorial. Entry is free and the museum opens promptly at 10 A.M. They make you store any bags and water bottles once inside. Everything is on the ground level so not an issue for people with reduced mobility. The displays are very informative from the history of currency displayed and described from the ancient world down to today. They've a number of interactive options to have fun and learn from. You can weigh yourself on a scale and get your body weight in terms of gold bullion. My favourite was the option of trying to lift a faux gold bar. Gives you an idea how gold being a dense metal is almost thrice as heavy as anything similar made of iron. A must when in Kolkata and even for locals too.

Many thanks to RBI for the renovations that turned it into a museum. Free admission for everybody. Even though there is free admission, few people visit this museum since they are not aware that it exists. I urged everyone to go at least once. 10 min from B.B.D bag railway station/Fairly jt ghat .

A great museum to enter in. While entering it would seem like a spectacular blend between old and new, modern and ancient, a senile venerable history and a modern architecture and technological marvel. It is located in the first building of the Reserve Bank of India, known as "Currency Building" which is located at No. 8, Council House Street was constructed by M/s Martin and Burn- the same firm that built the iconic Victoria Memorial. It is a two storied museum. In the ground floor the history of RBI is unfolded in a spectacular pattern through objects and presentation and visuals. In the first floor there are various games depicting enormity of RBI functions. It indeed is a great place to visit and learn and play at the same time. Children can also visit this place for learning. RBI museum guarantees a great learning experience.

There are only two RBI museums in India. The first RBI museum was established in kolkata. The other is in Mumbai. The whole of the two storied museum is beautiful & very interesting. Here is a very nice explanation of how the earliest business transactions were done in ancient times. Then gradually when RBI was established....every step since then to the current currency is explained here very nicely. A lot of knowledge can be gained here not only about indian currency but also about foreign currency. Monday this museum is closed.

For budding economists like me (😛) RBI is like a place of worship. It's where all our answers of 'Money and Banking' chapter lies. And it's much more ! You can get your weight in gold, you can see where the demonetized 500 and 1000 Rupees went (I guess this one everyone has wondered). You'll get to see what all can be made from shredded notes and obsolete coins, heck you can bring them home too !! Also there are so many games to play, so much information in one place. A must visit for people like me, and also not like me ! It's a gem ! Must must visit

RBI Museum is the heritage and knowledge center created by the Reserve Bank of India. Earlier, there is only one RBI Monetary Museum, which is in Mumbai. This second RBI museum is opened in Kolkata on 11 March 2019. Here you will get an idea about how money is introduced, its role in the economy, and your role in it, in a fun and interactive way. You can also explore how money has evolved over the times, how and why gold still holds a crucial role in our society and the genesis of RBI. This iconic red and white building was constructed by Martin & Co. It was owned by Sir Rajen Mookerjee and Sir Thomas Acquin Martin. It was that very building where the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was formed under the governorship of Sir Osborne Smith in 1935. Previously this building housed the Alliance Bank of Shimla, and in 1935 RBI took it on lease. In 1943, RBI acquired this property when Alliance Bank of Shimla went into liquidation. Though in the mid of 1950, a new RBI building came up, several departments continued to function from this old office. There is no charge for admission. You can just walk-in and if in a group, you can pre-book your visit. However, for entry a valid ID with photo, such as Aadhar card, driver’s license or passport is required. Photos are permitted but video recordings are not allowed. The RBI Museum is accessible to all. One of the main objectives of this museum is to use storytelling as a tool to create financial and banking literacy. This is very important now-a-days. Surely, in this museum you will get a brief idea about the history and evolution of RBI. If you are in Kolkata, you can visit this museum. Before you exit, you can stop by the souvenir shop, take some of their complimentary economic education resources and business publications. The shop sells items made of currency shreds and coins and bearing the museum logo.

👍 Very good place if u want to know the history. Very knowledgeable area. But the committee are not fully ready. They need to work more for smooth visit. Guard, maintaining statues lot to do. Overall good experience. SUGGESTIONS- Don't touch any statue. Visit with your family,
