Whether you have only a few minutes or an hour or two, enjoy a delightful visit to the Kolkata Police Museum. Occupying 2,000 square feet, the Museum reflects the rich tradition and history of policing in our city. The Museum seeks to collect, preserve and interpret objects related to the history of Kolkata Police. Our exhibit includes various items seized during the freedom struggle of the country. The museum is open to the general public Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the museum is FREE. The museum is more than just a display of historical artefacts, however. Indeed, it could be described as a ‘three-in-one’ combination of museum, library, and cafeteria, spread across its two floors, open to all members of the public, on all days of the year. An annual library membership costs you Rs 800, should you be interested. One other point of interest, particularly for Bengalis, is the building itself. For those who are unaware of this bit of our history, this was the house where the Bhawal Sannyasi, of ‘Sannyasi Raja’ and ‘Ek Je Chhilo Raja’ fame, frequently stayed in, while fighting his hugely controversial case in a Calcutta court, in the early part of the 20th century. In 1948, having changed ownership a number of times, the house finally became the residence of the Commissioner of Calcutta Police, and in 1972, it was converted into the headquarters of the Wireless Branch.

(Translated by Google) Calcutta Police Museum If you have a few hours on your hands during the holidays in Kolkata, and if you want to be a witness to history, come here. 113 Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy Road, Raja Ram Mohan Roy's house, here is the museum of Calcutta Police, waiting for you with a lot of evidence of forgotten history. This destination is not very popular yet so hopefully you will be able to roam freely in this corona. My wife and I went on December 26th and practically the whole time we didn't see anyone special except the two of us. A couple of people came much later and they left in a very short time. If you just want to see, you can easily visit this museum built on 2000 square feet in a couple of hours. If you want to do research work, it will take much more time. It took me a long time to take a few notes and scrutinize them. Why go? The museum is a documentary of the evolutionary history of the modern Calcutta Police (from the first British Police Commissioner Samuel Walkhop in 1857 to the present Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma) from the Calcutta Police Force of the British period, but the most interesting part of it is the British Revolution Seizures, weapons, bombs, documents, letters and other used items, which are not only seen, but also felt. Which in my opinion every Indian should see and know. What do you see? In every corner of this museum there are patriotic sentiments, testimonies of armed struggle in the war of independence, adventures and thrilling campaigns and the heroic tales of those fearless revolutionaries of undivided Bengal who gave their lives for the country with a smile, perhaps whose contribution we almost forgot. You will see how revolutionary Hemchandra Das made the first improvised explosive device, the book bomb, in 1906 to kill the tyrant Douglas Kingsford, which did not come to fruition in the irony of fate. Later, Prafulla Chaki and Khudiram Basu took charge of the unfinished work, or a .442 bore Webley RIC revolver and a .450 bore British Bulldog revolver which were bravely delivered to the jail by Sudhanshujivan Roy and Srishchandra Ghosh, with the help of Satya Chandra Bose. The traitor Naren Goswami K taught. You can see in 1914 R.B. Two of the 50 Mauser pistols looted from the Rodda Company shook the foundations of the entire British administration at the time. Any short-lived thriller movie can match the rate of events. With this .30 caliber C96 Brumhandle pistol, you will see five fearless Bengali youths fighting valiantly on the shores of Buribalam with a huge British force. Bagha Jatin, Chittapriya Roy Chowdhury, Jyotish Pal, Manoranjan Sengupta and Niren Dasgupta. Or the heroine, "Veena Das" who shot at Stanley Jackson at the college convocation. The collection also includes his used .360 bore Belgian Bulldog Pattern revolver. I will not make the list long, there are many more revolvers, pistols, guns and rifles that were used at some point in the armed freedom struggle. After standing here for a while, the corners of the eyes get wet, the head comes down in reverence. In addition to guns and pistols, there are 26 kg wooden mallets used by the revolutionaries to get a glimpse of their physical abilities, as well as weapons and equipment used by the Calcutta police force, Japanese bombs dropped on World War II in Calcutta, Hetal Parekh and Devyani Banik. Artifact of murder, The collection includes a bomb squad suit, a rare statue recovered, a bat signed by Sachin Tendulkar, and more. The latest addition, 64 classified files have been opened on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Great collection. The museum is located in the house which was once owned by Raja Ram Mohun Roy. From 1814-1830, he lived here. This house also accomodates the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North and North Suburban Division). The house has been given grade-I heritage status. The exhibits are arranged in two floors. The 7 rooms of the ground floor contains- 1. Timeline of evolution of police force in India. 2. Related photographs 3. Police Medals : President's Police Medal for Gallantry, Poorvi Star Medal, Shourya Padak, Prime Minister's Police Medal for Saving Life and many more. 4. Firearms of pre-independence era : Here you can see a silver pistol. The interesting fact is that it is said to be used in the film, Shatranj ke Khilari. You can also see a small cannon. Besides, different types of revolvers, pistols, muskets, rifles have been showcased here. You can see the guns used during the Swadeshi Movement e.g., liquid pistol, Stanley style pen pistol, walking stick gun, Damascus barrel gun, six chamber pen knife pistol. 6. Maps of different Police Stations 7. Replica of newspapers (Jugantar, Swadhin Bharat, Liberty) and circulars issued on the Swadeshi Movement. 8. Proscribed Literature : Example- Shikher Bolidan (Sacrifice of a Sikh) by Kumudini Mitra, Mukti Kon Pothe (Which way liberty can be found?) by Shree Abinash Chandra Bhattacharyya. 9. Information about Traffic Police, Detective Department, Armed Police, Headquarter Force, Control Room, Transport Section, Kolkata Police Directorate, The Pass Section, The Building Section, Security Section, Women Police, Arms Act Department, Homicide Squad and so on. 10. News about notorious crimes, skull and bone of a murdered person as an exhibit etc. 11. Properties seized by Detective Department : Elephant jaw, Radha Krishna (20th century brass figure), Goddess Ganga on Makara (18th century AD stone carving of Eastern Indian origin), revolvers, pipe-guns, Hayagriva (form of Vishnu, 19th century brass figure) etc. 12. Burglars' tools : Hacksaw blade, hammer, screw driver, wire cutter, wooden log etc. 13. A bomb disposal suit There are many other displays. Many of the collections related to the independence movement of India have been transferred from this museum to the Police Museum housed inside Alipore Jail Museum. On the first floor, there are 64 confidential files on Netaji. Open everyday except Monday. There is a memorabilia sales counter where you can buy T-shirt, coffee mug, wrist watch, magazines etc. and a set of 9 DVDs comprising of soft copies of 64 confidential files related to Netaji and his family. Opening hours : 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. No entry fees. Photography is prohibited.

A wonderful museum of Calcutta Police showcasing the eventful history of how the Calcutta police force was formed. Artefacts include ammunition used by freedom fighters. Pictorial representation of various events which will take the visitor down the memory lane. We also saw some mind boggling items such as the swing on which Hetal Parekh was killed, or the skeletal remains of Biswanath Dutta, who was murdered and then plastered inside his home by his brother and accomplices. Or for example, the jackets worn by the assailants who attacked the Kolkata American Center. There is an entire section dedicated to Netaji's classified files, digital copies of which can be accessed with due permission from authorities. Surprisingly the place did not have too big a crowd. But this is a must visit place for anyone interested. As a bonus, the officers were extremely courteous and understanding. We got a free booklet and got ourselves some memorabilia for remembrance!

Free entry, very nice collection of pistols and guns of legendary freedom fighters of Bengal and India. The museum also tells us about the history of the Police force in Kolkata, from the British period. Very intriguing collection. The people taking care of the museum (mostly police personnel) are also very well behaved and good. The museum also hasna bomb (which might have been dropped by a fighter aircraft and has not exploded) of World War II. This museum is a must visit for all tourists coming to Kolkata.

One time home of Raja Rammohan Roy. Good place to visit. One of a kind meuseum, depicting the journey of Kolkata Police through 1670 to present day. Entry free. PHOTOGRAPHY restricted. Contains various arms, guns, ammunitions and the description of the working of Kolkata Police is shown as per case study. It also contains the declassified files of Netaji which were released on 2015. Though these files are not kept in a way wherein the visitors could read them properly . A bit more publicity of the place required. A worthy place for visit if you are in the area.

The Kolkata Police Museum situated at 113, A. P. C. Roy Road, Kolkata 700 009 was built for Raja Ram Mohun Roy around the year 1814. In 1996 this building was converted into a Museum of Kolkata Police. Recently 64 files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and his family members are kept there by the Government of West Bengal for public viewing. It was commissioned in 31st August, 1996. At the time the museum predominantly showcased arms and ammunitions seized during the revolutionary movement of British era. In 2007 the museum renovated under the guidance of the Indian Museum to present to the visitors a holistic view of the city police force, development of force, pre and post independence political upheaval as well as the city police force today. There are so many things related with Kolkata Police has been displayed here for public interest.

The Calcutta Police Museum is a little museum dedicated entirely to the historical activities of Police - pre and post British era! There is no need for fees or registration to gain access inside. The only thing you need to do is to fill up some initials on the attendance register at the entrance and to keep your baggage outside on a table-top. There are about 5 rooms showcasing all the items of historical importance. Most of the items are concealed within glass cases and the incidents related to it are vividly described. The items at display especially the guns and sharp instruments are worth having a look. There's a suit kept at display used by personnel for diffusing bombs. I found it quite interesting. There are several rock carved idols confiscated by the department from illegal trading which are absolutely delightful to watch. Please make a note that: PHOTOGRAPHY IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Do not make any attempt to take any sort of photographs.

Great experience indeed..!! Very well-maintained museum and very co-operating staff. Well classified galleries and self-explanatory description of exhibits. Rare insight into the history and evolution of Calcutta Police/ Kolkata Police. An exclusive gallery on declassified Netaji files is on the upper floor. A souvenir shop at entry is an added attraction. Free entry for all with any valid photo identity card. A must-visit for everyone. But very few people are aware that such a museum exists, that too in Raja Rammohan Roy's residence. Request the authorities to publicise the museum for the greater interest of the citizens and to continue to maintain it well. The very best wishes for this landmark address.

Showcasing an impressive collection of weaponry, artifacts, photographs and information from its very inception as one of the country's oldest police force in 1704 till present times also covering the turbulent period of freedom struggle, this repository of knowledge is located in a heritage building which once belonged to Raja Ram Mohan Roy close to APC road and Sukea Street Xing. Photography is prohibited inside what is undoubtedly one of the best maintained museums of our city.

A small but well maintained museum exhibiting items related to the police and policing in Calcutta (now called Kolkata). Their firearms gallery is very interesting as is the gallery on the epaulettes, letter and exhibits related to crime and solving of the same. They have the shell of a bomb dropped on the city by the Japanese during WW2 and have a section for archives where a lot of once classified files and documents are exhibited. Researchers may access the same with due permission. One thing I would like to highlight is the extremely friendly and polite behaviour of all the staff we encountered. Be it the policeman at the gate to the gentleman guiding us or the gentleman in the office, it was a pleasure dealing with them. Entry is free. Another plus from a historical point of view is that this was where Raja Rammohun Roy spent 16 years of his life - this property was his house.

This museum, located within a historic building, houses some extremely interesting exhibits. Certain exhibits relating to famous criminal cases in the nationalist era and beyond have now been moved to the Alipore Jail Museum. I would suggest that in order to compensate, the early history of the Kolkata police and how it contributed, as well as evolved along with the metropolis, should be given more space. Some of the laminated prints of documents are fading. They should be replaced by new copies. This museum has so much potential, it needs to be built upon.
