The Haideri Mansion at Beliaghata is now converted to a museum and named Gandhi Bhawan, as at the time of partition in 1947 Mahatma Gandhi sat here for a fasting(Anshan) against the brutal communal attacks. It was due to his fasting for few days the attackers surrendered their weapons to him as a mark of stopping violence. The surrendered arms, a few belonging of Mahatma Gandhi a few photographs and copy of newspaper cutting is housed in this museum of around 5 rooms in a complex. The Haideri Mansion, such an important part of Indian history is almost an unsung structure, almost neglected, except for some historian, Gandhian's or locals hardly any Kolkata's citizen know about its exisitence.

Where was Mahatma Gandhi on the day of Indian Independence, 15th August 1947 ? Yes “Father of Nation” was in Calcutta (Kolkata). He was in Kolkata from 12th August to till 6th September 1947 but which place did he stay during those days ? Yes the house is still there, intact and really very well maintained. The name of the house was Hyderi – Manzil but now it is named after Gandhi “Gandhi Bhawan” and it is in Dr.Suresh Chandra Banerjee Road Kolkata (earlier Calcutta), India.

This is an old residence now converted into a museum where Gandhiji stayed when Indian got independence. Whirlwind days for the life of Gandhi and the nation. He could establish peace and avoid mutual massacre by Hindus and Muslims fir which Lord Mountbatten called him One man boundary force. Maintenance is so so.

A must to visit in Kolkata for History lover's and Gandhian followers. The place is well maintained. The staff are very friendly and showed us around all the places and explained us about the events accounted in the days of Gandi staying here. The photo gallery is very good. The things used by gandhi is in display. Definitely not just a tourist place. Its a place of national importance.

Metiabruz: Kolkata's 'Mini Lucknow' echoes the legacy of Nawab Mirza Wajid Ali Shah, the last king of Awadh. Deposed in 1856, he found refuge in the cultural haven of Metiabruz, enriching the suburb with his poetic flair, artistic patronage, and a lifetime of stories.

If you expect much.. sorry.. but yes, you can get a view of the rooms, utensils, Mahatmaji's stick, watch, his bed, etc. Actually he came to Calcutta at 1947, resided at Hydari Manzil (now Gandhi Bhawan) and made a fasting for 73 hours as a protest against the violation that arose regarding partition. There are pictures of newspapers depicting leaders, mob collisions, and many turmoil situations in Bengal.

Went there today at 2.30pm. The gates were locked from inside. A radio was playing on a table . No one responded to our calls. Before going there I checked Google where it showed that the museum was open. Went there again after 40 min but it was a futile effort.

A historical place, heritage landmark where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during India's Independence Day in 1947. Once a neglected property now restored to its old charm, turned into a museum with materials Gandhi used. A big prayer hall also at the center of the house.

Very significant part of Indian history you can witness here. But the museum has been renovated and yet to be inaugurated. Today the day is 10/12/22. So plan your visit after confirmation as Google is showing the place as open.

This is the very house where Mahatma Gandhi was staying as India was awakening to freedom on 15th August, 1947. From here, he kept a keen eye on the developments happening around during that time and also requested for the riots to stop. The place is now well maintained after many years of considerable neglect and the adjoining museum adds further to the glory of the place. There's still room for further beautification that will make this place more desirable as a tourist destination.
