Established in the year 1905, Royal Indian Hotel in Chittaranjan Avenue, it's is a top Mutton & Chiken Biryani 😋 One of the best place for non-veg food lovers ❤. Under 1000 Rs 2-3 people can easily enjoy their meals. It's near to M.G Metro 🚇 from there take auto or bus to Chittaranjan Avenue.

Dirty! Very dirty! Bathroom and restaurant dirtier than that of public toilets. This place is running only on brand value. Neither the biriyani was tasty, biriyani rice was not of good quality, mutton not juicy, taste was also average. 3 star only for staff behaviour, firni taste and 100+ years of legacy it has in kolkata. Would not recommend, unless you don't find any other good restaurant in that area.

Bit on the heavier side but one of the tastiest biriyanis in Kolkata for sure. And their mutton chanp is prolly the best you can get in the city. Great place overall.

I don't know what the fuss is about for this place. This restaurant urgently needs an inspection by a food safety officer at the earliest. Previously the seating which was non-AC has been converted to AC seating. In spite of that there were too many flies flying around on all the tables. There was no insect flasher installed there. Coming to the food, I was so disappointed to see their Chicken Biriyani. The normal plate cost ₹315 which is not very less, yet it did not have potato or an egg. Even the rice quantity was not enough for 1 person. The chicken pieces from chicken curry were very hard. We also ordered rumali roti which was cold and looked undercooked. The 300ml glass bottles were served when we ordered cold drinks for which they charged ₹70. They did not even pour it in a glass. All of the food tasted average. Nothing extraordinary. It's definitely not worth the price. Fake hype has been created by the food bloggers for this place. Some roadside biriyani joints are much better than this place. It was our 2nd visit and I'm never going to visit it again.

Food is so so yummy. Yes you have to be aware that the food will have more oil. The taste and amount is very nice. They have good space as well. You might or might not get a seat because it's a popular place. We ordered mutton Keema and rumali roti. And it was delicious. Also we didn't go through any inconveniences in our stomachs after eating (because we are not habituated of eating spicy food). Also if you're ordering biryani, you should know that you'll get a meatball in place of alu.

Royal Indian Hotel, One might call it as one of the legendary biryani places in kolkata. So with high hopes i visited it today, but i am sad indeed to say that it has lost its charm. I hate to see this esteemed icon loose its taste. The biryani was just not worth it anymore, same was the story with the soggy and oily paratha, if it was not for the mutton chap it would have had been a complete waste. I wish they enforce quality control and save this old gem.

Went there after a decade. Enjoyed mutton biriyani and mutton chaap, with a thumbs up. Very nice portion size, not too big, rice and meat proportion is good, and you must try mutton chaap here. Seating arrangements inside is big enough. Not very congested. No parking as such for 4 wheelers. But 2 wheelers can be parked just outside the restaurant. Recommended 👍

This place has remain unchanged since last 15 years of my visit. I'm quite amazed to see their consistent service and the quality they've maintained. Mutton chap with butter naan is a must try here.

Try : Mutton Chaap & roomali Roti Chicken liver Chicken chaap Mutton biryani Mutton burra kabab Mutton tikia (morning time ) Phirni Shahi tudka Ambience wise you won't find this restaurant appealing for your insta post or fb but food part is totally amazing and rocking Highly recommended 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍. This place is my childhood favorite. They have introduced a new kebabs ie. Jojo chicken kebabs do try , and biryani and chap is to die for. You can surely go for a family dinner. Ambience and service both are good.

The biryani (even without aloo) and mutton chap is love. Galouti kebab is also good but a bit heavy on the stomach. They have recently upgraded the interior and now it gives a fine dining restaurant vibe. Service is good but can be improved. Clean washroom, Prompt order delivery are some other plus points. Must visit if you are shopping at Bara Bazar.

One of the old and famous biriyani house of Kolkata. They don't serve potato & egg with biryani. Their biriyani is very smooth and low spicy. One of the best preparation is mutton chap, but it's very much spicy. Must try food shop for Kolkata. Satyajit Ray also loved their cuisine.

One of the oldest biriyani house in Kolkata. The food is quite tasty and well-cooked here I ordered special mutton biriyani, mutton chap and rumali rutii. Biriyani's mutton is well-cooked and soft and the rice quantity is also good, too oily. It's price is high. The only con about this restaurant is the space. All over is ok.

STILL THE BEST PLACE TO HAVE BIRYANI. Such a unique taste of Biryani compare to other big brands. It's dense, full of aroma and great blend of spices. Please try their signature dish which is Mutton Chap. You cannot get this chap anywhere else.

Royal needs no introduction. This iconic heritage restaurant is located at Burrabazar. If we are to talk of the ambience, it's nothing great. In fact, very very ordinary. But then we come to food and oh goodness, how do I gather enough words to describe it? Their biryani comes without any potatoes, but it tastes amazing. The aroma and blend of spices will satiate you the moment it is served on the table. Their rumali roti and mutton chaap is also a must try. I have heard a lot about their phirni too, but was so filled already that couldn't try it. Not much to say, but - "If there's heaven on earth, it has to be at Royal. It has to be at Royal." 😭❤️

It is a very popular hotel in Nakhoda Masjid area. Famous for their biriyani, chanp, shahi tukra, firni. They didn't give aaloo in their biriyani which is pretty big unique cause you will find aaloo in other restaurants biriyani in all over kolkata. But Royal lost their charm and taste, food quality is not upto the mark like it used to be, price is also bit high compare to quantity and quality served by other good mughlai restaurants in Kolkata. The ambience is not so good and it's very unhygienic. Their staff behaviour is also not so good with their customers. But I hope they will be able to regain their lost glory in the future and we can get to taste good and tasty food.

The food here is horrible. Complete waste of money. We ordered 1 Special Mutton Biriyani, which was stale and was not eatable. Mutton rezala same story, stale. The mutton piece was just a lump of fat. Check photo for reference. The only item that we enjoyed was the green salad. Highly not recommended. Complete waste of money and time.

One of the best in class mughlai food restaurant in the city. Located just opposite to Nakhoda mosque. They have separate family section, ac section open after 7pm. Mutton biryani, mutton chap and mutton rezala are something to must try. Washroom available, wheelchair not accessible.

One of the best places near Nakhoda Masjid to have a proper biriyani meal. We visited on Saturday and as usual it was pretty crowded. We had - Mutton Biriyani Mutton Queema Mutton Galwati Kebab Shahi Tukda The biriyani was pretty good both taste and aroma wise. The galawati kebab was soo smooth and melted in mouth right away. The Queema on the other hand was a bit average in taste and had lots of bone fragments in it. The shahi Tukda was good tho. Perfect for family visits during occasions. *DO KEEP IN MIND THAT THEY ONLY ACCEPT CASH*

The service is the worst. They think that they are running free charity to feed you. Food is also overhyped. If you have ordered any Biriyani you will get only rice and the meat. There is no Aloo for which Kolkata Biriyani is famous. Also Egg is not there. The price is so much yet the quantity is also not fulfilling for one person properly. It is located in Burrabazar/Barabazar Chitpur area. While traveling from Howrah to Sealdah, get down at Chitpur Crossing and walk for a minute to the outlet. However, the Mutton Chap can be a count to satisfy your taste buds, but again the quantity is very less. Rumali Roti is undercooked. Also, they need to pay special attention to tidiness. I felt very untidy.

Food is just awesome..we were having Biriyani and chicken kadhai and butter nun. Highly recommend the biriyani. Not very oily and the chicken pieces are also so soft. And lastly the atmosphere is also so great. Service and their behaviour is also very fast and polite accordingly.

Biryani taste is excellent with perfectly cooked chicken. One humble request for owner to give at least one cooked potato with Biryani (as Biryani price is high enough to add that) . Paneer butter masala was also very tasty. 👌

This is an old Calcutta charm, which needs to be experienced. We tried their biriyani, mutton rezala and chicken reshmi kabab. The restaurant might look slightly shabby, but the food is delicious. The quantity is pretty good and the pricing reasonable. For those who love their food will go there over and over again.

It is a very popular hotel in nakhoda masjid area. The ambiance is really good, specially in first floor area. We ordered biriyani with chicken chap. I must say both were really awesome. Specially the taste of the chicken chap was just heaven. It's a top selling dish here. The length of the rice is little small but still very tasty. The staffs are very helpful too. You can definitely visit here at least for mouth watering chicken chap.

I have tried biriyani from various restaurants of many cities and countries but Royal has its own charm. Obviously it was even better previously and currently the quality and quantity is little less. Still the smell of biriyani and the taste of chaap are just unparalleled according to me. No matter how many types of biriyanis I have, Royal's biriyani and mutton chaap are like nostalgia to me

This is a century old restaurant situated at Rabindra Sarani, beside Nakhoda Masjid at Burrabazar area. The place is in a very crowded and congested area. Their seating is on the 1st floor. They have 2 seperate seatings, one with the AC and another is non AC. The overall decoration is very simplistic. Overall food quality is not exceptionally good, to me it was average. The biryani is a bit authentic and not that "Kolkata Style" as you won't get potatoes in it! We ordered Chicken Reshmi Malai Kebab, it was very tasty indeed and the chicken was very soft. Mutton Special Biryani was okay-ish and so was the Chicken Biryani. On their recommendation, we ordered Royal Mutton Chaap, which they claimed was their 'Special Item' but I'm utterly disappointed with the item. It was overly spiced up and the maximum portion contained bones and fats.

I don't understand what's the hullabaloo about !!!!!!! The seekh kebabs are below average, the biryani is average and the mutton chaap is good, but nothing extraordinary. Service was fine, well behaved staff and fast servings. But Food, i mean I am just being honest. It's really not worth to travel so much because there is no surprise. Still if you visit there, order mutton chaap only.

Probably the worst Biryani I have tasted so far. Had so much expectations while visiting this place but completely disappointed. The taste of Royal Mutton biryani is so cheap and ordinary that even the street biryanis would taste better than this which costed us ₹325+taxes. Then in sides we ordered Nargisi Kofta by the wonderful name and in turn it came out to be Egg curry which tasted awful. Don't know why people visit this worthless place for biryani.

Go for their biriyani and chanp, which do justice to their reputation. They taste delicious BUT the chanp is very very greasy(mostly due to melted fat) to an extent that you can see the grease solidify when the dish cools down a bit. The portions are less compared to the price. Other items like paratha, mutton Qorma, firni are quite commonplace. Another point to note down, the ppl serving food tend to serve salad even when you decline, they charge you extra for this. We had to ask the salad to be taken back twice.

Never eat Mutton Chap. There are lots of pieces of bones in the mutton chap. Quality is very poor. In 100 gm of mutton chap you will get 60 grams of bone pieces. Biriyani is quite good. Not Marvelous. But the mutton piece in biriyani was nicely cooked.

Went with the legacy of this place, but to be honest, people who have developed their tastebuds for Hyderabadi biryani's will not quite love it. Still you can give it a try if you are really craving for biryani and in Kolkata.

Good food and service. The place is usually a little overcrowded but there are separate spaces for accomodation both at the ground floor and on the top floor. The top floor space is separated into two room, one with Air Conditioning and one with no Air conditioning. The A/C section is well furnished with sofas and comfortable lighting and the non A/C section is divided into normal tables and tables inside family cabins. Overall, good service and good experience.

Absolutely waste of money !!! The food is expensive and is utter rubbish . Had ordered mutton chaap which was basically bones mixed in oil . The biryaani was ok ok but the mutton was as hard as a piece of tyre!! I was recommended this place by some locals but trust me even if the ambiance would have been good I would hav still liked the place but even the ambiance is bad . No soap in the dispenser . They are basically making money by serving bad food .

Food quality hits a new low here. They sometimes serve food not hot enough. Today I ordered Mutton Quorma and it was a single piece only a big size bone. You can't eat that. Coming to their staff behaviour you just can't spare them. They won't help you enough during the order and they always ask for tips. If you don't give they are rude enough to spoil your day. It was quite pathetic that our beloved an don eof the kost visited place turned like this. Hope for good old days back again.

The sitting area is too small and very crowded. The most negative thing- NO CARDS ACCEPTED. So we have to go to ATM and after that able to do lunch. By the way the Biriyani was tasty but the quantity is medium.

  • 4/5 sourav s. 2 years ago on Google
The best biryani shop. I must say. Perfectly cooked meat. And 1 thing I realised you haven't any digest issue. I took mutton Biryani, kadai chicken, salad & firni.. as per my advice never take kadai chicken which is absolutely bogus.. strong flavour of onion make your lunch complete disgusting. I'm also attaching the menu. So it may help you. Thank you.

Best Biriyani in Kolkata. Chicken and Mutton chap is also famous. There is no potatoes in biriyani. Delicious food. This is located in North Kolkata, Zakaria Street. 15 minutes walking from M G Road metro station.

Biryani was light but little dry. Mutton chaap was sooooooo good, had it with rumali roti.. soda sikanji was life saver. Lastly, the Shahi tukra was so delicious 😋.. Firni was so so

Heard a lot about this from many people couple of years back. Got a chance to visit it today (March 2022). Ordered Mutton Chops, which was great by the way. Their special Biriyani was supposed to be the best, but didn't felt that great. Just normal Biriyani, nothing special about it. Staff behavior is awesome and thats the only thing I liked about the place.

  • 4/5 Debjit G. 10 months ago on Google
Kebabs are GREAT, juicy & finger-licking good ! Just melted in the mouth ! Mutton Biryani is GOOD but i expected more according to the price ! Food quality is GREAT ! Food quantity is sufficient enough !

Worst Biriyani in Kolkata. Road side Biriyani is more tasty and in more quantity than Royal Biriyani. If you want you have lots of money and 300/- is not valuable or 260/- chicken chap is like disgusting. I taste many restaurant Biriyani but this is Kolkata Worst Biriyani ever. In Biriyani it not like a chicken peace its like crow's meat and in chicken chap the smallest piece of chicken I ever see without no gravy. Don't go there.

It is on Zakaria street on the 1st floor. Service are really poor. Only food is good, for the reason they are getting good crowd. They must have place insect killer machine. Also 200 ml pepsi they cost 70 rs

In 1905, the Royal Indian Hotel was born when Ahmed Hussain, a descendant of Nawab Wazid Ali Shah, set up an eatery. Over the years, it became a favorite spot for luminaries like Satyajit Ray, Uttam Kumar, Khushwant Singh, Raj Kapoor, and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Let me introduce you to the Royal Biryani, a 'brainpower booster' endorsed by Feluda in "Napoleoner Chithi." I'm a die-hard fan of the mutton chaap, another masterpiece from the Royal kitchen. Pair it with roomali for a perfect meal. The flavor of the biryani may have lost it's charm, but don't miss Royal if it's on your bucket list.

😐 Simply come here for the atmosphere and history. Nothing should be eaten here. Cold coffee was a letdown. It was cold water that had been sweetened with a pinch of coffee.
