At Esplanade, we saw the pre-historic trams on the roads, and out of the smoggy night, we saw a brightly lit Shaheed Minar. Shaheed Minar, whose meaning in English stands for, ‘tower for the martyrs’ towers above the Maidan area. The Monument was erected to commemorate Major-general David Ochterlony, commander of the British East India Company’s main force in the Gurkha War of 1816.Rallies. We walked in the park near Shaheed Minar- Beautifully lit park with fountains.

    (Translated by Google) Shahid Minar Hall is a memorial located in Kolkata. The monument was formerly known as the Ochterlony Monument. The monument was erected in 1828 in memory of Major-General Sir David Octorloney, Commander of the British East India Company. The monument was erected in Delhi in 1804 to commemorate his successful defense against the Marathas in Delhi and the victory of the Company forces under his leadership against the Gorkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese War. The monument was designed by JP Parker. The monument was built with the help of government treasury. The construction cost of the monument was 35 thousand rupees. In August 1969, the then United Front government dedicated the memorial to the martyrs of India's independence movement. At that time the monument was renamed "Shahid Minar". Currently, the government has decided to illuminate the monument at night and allow visitors to climb to the top. Former Governor of West Bengal Gopalkrishna Gandhi and his family are the last to rise to the top of this monument. Features An old picture of Shahid Minar. The Shaheed Minar is commonly referred to as the "Monument". It is located in the north-east corner of Maidan in the Esplanade area of central Kolkata. The pillar is 48 meters (156 feet) high. The lower part is modeled on Egyptian architecture. The column part is of classical fluted style. The surface is Syrian style and the dome is Turkish style. There are two porches above. To reach the top floor of the minaret, one has to climb a coil-shaped staircase of 223 steps. The monument was built by Burn & Company. Shahid Minar Maidan There is a large field on the south side of the Shahid Minar. The name of this field is Shahid Minar Maidan. Rallies and fairs of political parties are organized in this field. The first political rally was held in this ground in 1931. Rabindranath Tagore presided over the meeting in protest of the killing of young prisoners in Hijli Jail. The central bus terminus of the city is located on the east side of Shahid Minar Maidan. Use In 1997, a tourist jumped from the top of the Shahid Minar. From then on, if you want to climb the Shaheed Minar, you have to get permission from the police. A copy of the address and photo ID has to be submitted at the Lalbazar police headquarters. Foreign tourists are required to submit hotel documents and foreigners are required to submit a copy of their passport. The view of Kolkata can be seen from the top of the Shaheed Minar like the London Eye. So the government plans to open the Shaheed Minar to the public once the reforms are over. The renovation work started in 2011. It will end in two parts. The first part of the reforms was completed on June 15, 2012. The cost of this reform is about 50 lakh rupees. The Shaheed Minar has been illuminated from inside and outside. The minaret has also been painted. In the second phase of the renovation, a temporary platform will be provided at the foot of the minaret. This will reduce traffic congestion at the Dorina crossing during political rallies. When the renovation work is completed, tourists and common people will get a chance to climb the Shaheed Minar. A souvenir shop will also be set up in front of the Shaheed Minar. The path to the minaret will be cleared and decorated with flowers. Great Historical Place of Bengal (Original) Great Historical Place of Bengal 🙏🏻🙏🏻

In the past it was known as the Ochterlony Monument. It was constructed in 1828 in commemoration of Sir David Ochterlony, Major General. It's location is in Kolkata Maidan. Again it is devoted to the memory of Martyrs of the Indian freedom movement on 9th August, 1969. It is called Saheed Minar. Now it is a place of meeting point. It is a place of casual conversation. It is a location for gossip and assemble of friends. It is maintained by the government of West Bengal.

Topping the list of must-visit historical sites in Kolkata is Shaheed Minar. This memorial was erected in 1828 in the memory of Sir David Ochterlony, who was a commander in the British East India Company, to commemorate his victories on the battlefield. It was thus originally known as Ochterlony Monument. However, in August 1969, this monument was re-dedicated to the memory of the martyrs of India’s struggle for independence and was renamed Shaheed Minar (martyrs’ monument). Location: Dufferin Road, Kolkata Timings:10:00 am to 5:00 pm Entry Fee:Free

Nothing to boast about this place. It's unclean, lacks maintenance. It's only a 10 mins walk from Chowringhee crossing. It used to be a tourist attraction earlier, but now it's probably not. One can visit for some pictures, nothing else to do. One can have some snacks there from the vendors if interested.

The 48 meter high Shaheed Minar, popularly called the “Monument” is a prominent landmark of Kolkata. Established in the year 1848, it was named Ochtorloney Monument to honour, Sir David Ochterlony who served in the Nepal War (1814 – 1816).  In 1969, this Ochterlony Monument received its new name ‘Shahid Minar’, which means “Martyr’s Tower” to honour the sacrifice of Indian freedom fighters. The architecture of Shaheed Minar shows a brilliant blend of Egyptian, Syrian and Turkish style of designing. There is nothing much to explore here. However this is near to Eden Garden and you can spend 10-15 minutes here.

I walked up to this minar one night to photograph. It looked quite shady at night to be honest due to lack of light and people and vendors sitting around it in the dark. Some probably were just sitting to catch the long distance bus. But I would request the govt to make these kind of place adequately lit at night and the request the people t help keep the city clean. I wish I could get more time to spend here in the morning instead.

Beautiful place. There's arrangement of sitting. No entry fee. Tourist spot. One thing I don't like about this place is, there's no shade. It'll tiring if you visit there in summer. A large field is there. There's no timing of opening of closing. This place is near a bus stop. It's few minutes away from Esplanade Metro Station. Moreover, transportation in this place is quite advanced.

In the memory of Sir David Ochterlony, the Shaheed Minar, roughly translating to the Martyrs’ Monument was constructed. It was earlier known as the Ochterlony Monument. The Saheed Minar is located in the Esplanade area of Kolkata, India in the northernmost end of Maidan next to the Brigade Grounds. Shaheed Minar was erected in 1828 by the East India Company in memory of Major-general Sir David Ochterlony who was the commander of the British East India Company. The monument was made to commemorate and celebrate the victory of East India Company against the Marathas in Delhi in 1804 and the win against the Gurkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese War. The monument was constructed in the memory of Sir David Ochterlony as he was the commander during these wars. He was born on 12th February 1758 and died on 15th July 1825 at the age of 67. He was a Major-general of the Bengal Artillery and was awarded the GCB or Dames Grand Cross award. The monument was designed by J. P. Parker and was funded by public funds.

Standing at a height of 48 meters (157 ft), Shaheed Minar was famously called the “Cloud kissing monument” by Mark Twain. It has a foundation that is based on Egyptian styles of architecture, while the fixed column has a Syrian upper portion and a Turkish dome. The design has a classical fluted column with two balconies on the top. The top floor is accessible by a staircase with a total of 223 steps to the top. The monument was made by the Burn & Company. The monument was designed by J. P. Parker and was funded by public funds. It was rededicated to the memory of the martyrs of the Indian freedom struggle on 9th August 1969 and renamed as the “Saheed Minar '' which translates to ‘martyrs’ monument’ in both Bengali and Hindi, an apt name for this honorary piece of architecture. The last few visitors at this memoriam are Gopal Krishna Gandhi with his family. After all these years, the government of West Bengal has decided to reopen this venue for the public to visit, decorating it with sparkling illuminations. Recently the authorities have become a little lenient with the permission to go to the top of the tower, thus now would be a good time to plan on walking up those winding stairs up to the balcony as you breathe in the history of the place.

Shaheed Minar is a prominent monument located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The monument was originally built in 1828 in memory of Sir David Ochterlony, a British East India Company army officer. However, it was later renamed as Shaheed Minar in 1969 in honor of the Indian freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country's independence. The monument is located in the heart of Kolkata and is a popular landmark in the city. It is a 48-meter tall tower that has a spiral staircase leading to the top from where one can have a panoramic view of the city. The monument is surrounded by a beautiful garden and is illuminated at night, making it a popular spot for visitors. The Shaheed Minar is also an important site for political and social gatherings and has been witness to many historic events and speeches over the years. It is considered to be an iconic symbol of Kolkata's cultural and historical heritage and is a must-visit for anyone visiting the city.

☀️ The Shaheed Minar, formerly known as the Ochterlony Monument, is a 48-meter (157 ft) tall tower in Kolkata, India. It was built in 1828 by the British East India Company in memory of Major-General Sir David Ochterlony, who commanded the company's forces in the Anglo-Nepalese War and the successful defense of Delhi against the Marathas. ☀️ Here are some interesting facts about the Shaheed Minar: ☀️ It was designed by J.P. Parker and is a blend of Egyptian, Syrian, and Turkish architectural styles. The foundation is based on the Egyptian style, the column is a combination of a classical fluted column and a Syrian upper portion, and the dome is in the Turkish style. ☀️ The tower has two balconies and a serpentine staircase with 223 steps leading to the top. The top floor was once open to the public, but it is now closed due to safety concerns. In 1969, the monument was renamed Shaheed Minar, meaning "Martyrs' Monument," to honor the Indian freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country's independence. ☀️ Here are some things to do at the Shaheed Minar: ☀️ Take a walk around the base of the tower and admire the architecture. 🌞 Climb the 223 steps to the top floor (if it is open) and enjoy the panoramic views of Kolkata. Visit the nearby Maidan, a large park that is popular for picnicking and relaxing. ☀️ Attend a political rally or other event that is being held at the Shaheed Minar.

It's a place where you can sit only when the sun is about to set. Because it doesn't have any shades, it's an open place. No entry fee needed, but nothing to see around. Has a shortcut path for people to cross. It's visible from a long distance as this is a tall structure.

Entitled as the "Cloud kissing Monument" by Mark Twain, the Shaheed Minar is located at Esplanade in Central Kolkata in the north-east facet of the Maidan. The tower is 48 metres (157 ft) high. It has a foundation based on the Egyptian style. The column is a combination of styles with a classical fluted column, a Syrian upper portion, and a Turkish dome. It has two balconies at the top. The top floor of the minar is accessible by a serpentine staircase, a total of 223 steps. It has a total of 218 steps until the top of the tower.[View of the Shaheed Minar Maidan The monument was erected by burn PUBLIC USE::::: In 1997, a tourist jumped off the lower balcony of the monument.[4] Since then, police permission is required to climb the steps of the monument.[4] Local residents must submit proof of address and a photo ID at the Lalbazar Police Headquarters, while out-of-town tourists must submit documents from their hotel, and foreigners must submit a copy of their passport.[4] The monument offers a bird's-eye view of the city.[4] The government has planned to open the monument to the public, after the renovation work is completed. The renovation work was started in late 2011 and will be completed in two phases. The first phase was scheduled to be completed by June 15, 2012, and is said to cost about ₹50 lakhs.[4] There are also plans to illuminate the monument, both from inside and outside, and to give the monument a fresh coat of paint. In the second phase a temporary folding stage will be set up at the foot of the 48-metre (157 ft) tall monument[4] to avoid congestion at the Dorina Crossing during rallies. After the work is completed, both tourists and locals will have access to the top of the monument. Stalls selling souvenirs will also be set up just in front of the monument, while the pathways leading to it will be cleaned and decorated with flowering plants.

Quite a great place to explore but would never be recommended in summer. Lack of sheds and resting places makes it a terrible condition to walk around in this place. It is greatly not recommended to visit in mid day or afternoon.

Historical monument. A must visit for family with kids. Recommend all to take ferry from Howrah to Babughat and walk the way passing Netaji Indoor Stadium, Calcutta High Court, Bidhan Sabha Bhavan, Akashvani Bhavan, Eden Gardens and then to the historical Minar.

Popularly known as Monument, Shaheed Minar is dedicated to the martyrs of the Indian freedom movement. This 48 m-high tower has an Egyptian-style foundation while the structure itself has a classical fluted column and a Turkish dome with its upper part being designed in Syrian style. The tower is lit up at night and visitors are allowed to go up to the top where there are two balconies. A flight of 223 stairs leads up to the top. Shaheed Minar is located in the Esplanade in central Kolkata, towards the north east of the Maidan. This tower was initially constructed in memory of the commander of the British East India Company, Major General Sir David Ochterlony. The commander had successfully defended Delhi against the Marathas in 1804 and had ensured the East India Companys win against the Gurkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese War. Shaheed Minar, erected in 1828, was earlier known as Ochterlony Monument. The architect of the monument was JP Parker. But now condition of place is very bad because people come eating gutkha and spitting there throwing garbage no cleanings people are very rude 👎
