One of the most popular tourist spot in Kolkata, its Asia's largest planetarium, it has a dome/stupa like structure. Ticket price is INR 120. Programs are conducted in multiple languages- English, Hindi, Bengali. You should definitely visit this once to learn more about the universe, galaxies, stars etc. It's really good for kids, specially for those who like science. The planetarium has awesome projectors, sound system, and the star all presents the most realistic starfield in the dome. It's just opposite to Victoria Memorial.

Ticket is costly. 120Rs just for a 20min show. Cost is little much that it should be. Overall it's a nice place. No one is allowed to go in before they again open the door. Once the show is started they close the main gate.

The Birla Planetarium (officially M. P. Birla Planetarium) in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, is a single-storeyed circular structure designed in the typical Indian style, whose architecture is loosely styled on the Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi.[1] Situated at Chowringhee Road adjacent to the Victoria Memorial, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Maidan in Central Kolkata, it is the largest planetarium in Asia[2] and the second largest planetarium in the world.[3] There are two other Birla Planetariums in India: B.M. Birla Planetarium in Chennai and the Birla Planetarium in Hyderabad. Popularly known as taramandal, the planetarium was inaugurated on 2 July 1963[4] by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. It has an electronics laboratory for design and fabrication of science equipment. It has an astronomy gallery that maintains a huge collection of fine paintings and celestial models of renowned astronomers. The Planetarium also has an astronomical observatory equipped with a Celestron C-14 Telescope with accessories such as ST6 CCD camera and solar filter. It offers to the public and students more than 100 astronomical projects dealing with various facts of astronomy, astro-physics, Space Science as well as myths concerning stars and planets. It has a capacity of 6800. Daily programs are conducted in English, Bengali and Hindi. The show timings are as follows: 12:00 PM Hindi, 1:00 PM English, 2:00 PM Hindi, 3:00 PM Bengali, 4:00 PM Hindi, 5:00 PM Bengali, 6:00 PM English.[5] Programs are occasionally conducted in Odiya, Tamil and Gujarati, as well.[6] Extra shows are arranged on holidays. The Planetarium was constructed by ML Dalmiya & Co. which is owned by Board of Control for Cricket in India former President late Jagmohan Dalmiya. Awesome experience 😁

We really enjoyed the place and the show. Many shows running in different languages like Bengali, Hindi, English. When we reached there it was time for English show (45 min show). It was very nice experience. There is also a museum inside, with many interesting facts to be explored. Very enjoyable.

Very good experience for full family interested in stars and galaxies. Around 30 min good quality show but too technical in which most of us slept. Well organised and systematic space overall.

Absolutely in love with the place. I am surprised that even with the lesser number of audience, they carry on with their amazing shows in 3 languages- English, Bengali and Hindi. Go there sometime before the show timing. Ticket price is Rs 120 per person. It is worth it totally. Building looks so nice and serene .Seats inside are comfortable. Just when the show starts, someone dictates the introduction. Just listen to how smooth he/she is, what strong skills he/she has! I have watched the show 'cosmic collisions'One show is for half and hour. It shows how collisions in space affects us. Loved the show.

Good Experience. Planet history can be comprehended with great graphics and sound. There is a three-language show: English, Hindi, and Bengali. Show times are available on the website. Before the show starts, you have the option to purchase tickets using either a card or cash. The waiting time is approximately 10-15 minutes. The duration of the show is 30-40 minutes. This is a place where everyone is welcome. But the ticket price is too high, at 120 per head, which is quite expensive.

Mind blowing viewing dome that shows the true vastness of the space and the complexity of the international space program: the viewing dome within the planetarium is the biggest I have seen and this is bigger than the one in Greenwich London! The program presentation on stars and Kepler’s planetary laws and the international space program is possibly the best in the world. The visit was worth it after all these years as the planetarium is doing well even after so many years! Well done to the management team! Only one downside is the waiting line outside the building is beside a lavatory that smells a lot but everything else is above par excellence here! Highly recommended!

In spite of the hype, this place is no longer a place worth the long line. They need to upgrade the facility to remain a novelty. Moreover, there are two big issues with the content of the show: 1. The narrative mentions Stone Henge; ancient Greek, Roman, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and Chinese contribution to Astronomy - but never mentions anything about India. This beats me. 2. The content is at least 10 years old. How difficult is it to update it, say, every year?

Personally I did not find the reason of so much hype about this place because, 1. The price of the ticket is way more expensive than it is providing to you. 2. Though you are buying such an expensive ticket but still you have to wait in a way long line to grab a better seat because they do not provide you any seat number. Who comes first have the good seat. So there is always a rush in the line pushing each others. 3. This is only a 30 minutes show and will just give you the idea of different constellations, nothing else. 4. The gapes between your row and front row is very narrow, so you will find the person infront of you has almost leaned upon you. Also if your height is above 5 ft 6 inch you will feel that you have very low amount of leg space. I personally felt it. This was not a good experience for me. I have heard a lot about this place but it was not even close to that mark.

It reopened to public on 18 July 2017, after closing down for 28 months of renovations work. The new planetarium system for the Birla Planetarium is a so-called ZEISS Hybrid Planetarium, with the STARMASTER, an optical-mechanical planetarium projector (also called “Starball”) working in synch with a dome video display system. The Starball presents the most realistic starfield in the dome with superimposed images of constellation outlines, space objects like nebula and galaxies, planets and moons by the VELVET digital video system, called fulldome projection. The technical upgrade was delivered and installed by the German company Carl Zeiss AG.

Good thing is that this place is open during Durga puja. We watched a show here and I am not sure if the projector was not working properly or it was meant to be that way: the entire show was displayed only at one side of the planetarium dome and being at the "wrong" side of the hall, we had terrible neck cramp after the show. Rs. 120 per person was not worth at all because of this experience. I wish the display was rotating so that every person in the hall could watch the show. However, they are maintaining Covid protocol and managing crowd as much as possible, which was good.

Got chance to see universe beyond from the eyes of the voyager. Nice show and the projections were mesmerising. Your eyes get filled with night sky, constellations, galaxies and wonderful planets. The show is available in three different languages hindi, English and bengali on different timing. Entery ticket is ₹120 per head. They maintain good ambience and had also followed covid guidelines very well. The only issue we faced was that the show was mostly projected on the other sides from our sight, due to which we have to turn our head constantly on right side of chair, which was very uncomfortable. They can provide panorma kind of view so that everyone seated on different directions can see properly. It is real close to maidan metro station and rabindra sadan metro station as well. One should reach atleast 45mins before show begin, so that they can buy tickets and get seated properly before show begin. As there was huge line when we reached for show and planetarium got limited seats near 286 due to pandemic.

I had a plane to catch after evening. Had nothing to do for a few hours in Kolkata. I came here and enjoyed a 30 min show called "Cosmic Collisions". Best decision ever haha! The quality of the video and audio was unexpectedly good. Btw, when you are purchasing the tickets make sure you are purchasing the tickets for your preferred language. The one in English started at around 6PM. They also have the same show in Bengali and Hindi earlier in the day.

It has a small exhibition hall, which has pictures and description about different galaxies. It has a weighting machine which shows your weight with respect to different planets including Earth, so that you can compare..it is really fun. Birla planetarium runs shows where you can get a view of night sky and get to know about different stars in the sky and their positions, it also explains the history of Universe. The show runs in 3 different languages; English, Bengali and Hindi. Ticket is 100 Rs for any show. It's a worth watch, specially for children. Birla planetarium is well decorated and clean.

Good projection and explanations. The experience would be grand if the management can consider some shows in 3D. Clean toilets. However did not find any attendent at the souvenir shop

Situated in the city of joy - Kolkata, Birla Planetarium is a magnificent edifice set up by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 2nd July 1963. It is one of the three planetariums present in India. Also known as Taramandal, the Birla Planetarium regularly holds many shows and programs are in various languages including Hindi, English, Bengali, and other regional languages. In addition to being a planetarium, Birla Planetarium also has an electronics laboratory and an astronomy gallery that has a collection of paintings and astronomical models. People, especially astronomy lovers, arrive from all over the world to experience the amazing shows organized here. Silence rings loud while the show goes on, which in itself is a testament to the mesmerising effect of the shows here. The Birla Planetarium in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, is a single-storeyed circular structure designed in the typical Indian style, whose architecture is loosely styled on the Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi. Situated at Chowringhee Road adjacent to the Victoria Memorial, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Maidan in Central Kolkata, it is the largest planetarium in Asia and the second largest planetarium in the world.[3] There are two other Birla Planetariums in India: B.M. Daily programs are conducted in English, Bengali and Hindi from 12:00 to 19:00 hrs. The show timing is as follows: Mon to Sat - 12.30 PM HINDI, 1.30 PM ENGLISH, 2.30 PM HINDI, 3.30 PM BENGALI, 4.30 PM HINDI, 5.30 PM BENGALI, 6.30 PM ENGLISH and two extra show on Sunday and Holiday is 10.30 AM HINDI, 11.30 AM BENGALI (updated on 15.08.2017) Programs are occasionally conducted in Oriya, Tamil and Gujarati, as well.[5] Extra shows are arranged on holidays. The Planetarium was constructed by ML Dalmiya & Co. which is owned by Board of Control for Cricket in India former President late Jagmohan Dalmiya.

We watched a show on cosmic collision. It was wonderful. However the problem is with the management of the planetarium. There is a long queue even in this pandemic situation and no online booking system. That increases the gathering. Also there is no way of knowing that if you are waiting in the queue will you be admitted inside as the no of seats are limited (reduced due to Covid). So if ulyou are going on a weekend , better be there almost 1.5-2 hrs before the show you want to attend. Else you will end up at the end of a long queue and may not get entry. Bike Parking is available inside St. Paul's. And clean washrooms are present inside the planetarium. So when you are waiting outside in a queue there is no way you can access it.

A must to visit place when you are in Kolkata. Ticket price Rs 120/- per head irrespective of age. You have to buy tickets for children below 3years also. The queue for ticket counter is on the right side and then you have to be in another queue on the left side for entering the main hall. Try to take seat on left row after entering the main hall or take the seat near the projector for good and convenient viewing. Don't sit on the right side. Sound and projection is very good.

Had an awesome time. But I think Rs 100 price was bit expensive for many people especially in terms of only for 28 minutes. Also I am seeing this same show about Cosmic from years after years. I meant no changes even after such a long span of time. But the toilet and bathrooms are super clean which is really great. Filtered water is a blessing. Also additional information at the back side of the building was really impressive. Over all had a good time there...

All good about this place. Great show; no more just mechanical projections of constellations; But a full fledged movie show with fx and narration. The shows are enjoyable for the whole socio-economic, religious and cultural cross section of our society. There are three shows daily from Monday to Friday, one each in, English, Bengali and Hindi. On weekends, there is an additional English show post 5pm or so. All visitors are advised to check schedule of shows before visit from the website. The pandemic has necessitated entry of all members of a group together; get one coupon only, for all the heads together, present that coupon at the ticket counter, show the cash and drop it in a box kept there (₹100/head for Indian citizens), get the tickets, queue up then and there, enter the auditorium, witness the show and come out, all that in one go. The plush interior of the building complements the ambience well. The arrangement inside the auditorium is pleasant and well managed. The men's room is nice and clean but reportedly the women's room is ugly unclean. It's a fact that many of our fellow countrymen and women are yet to find out the best use of the modern wash and sanitary amenities; But that should not mean that the facility cannot have an attendant keep this important place squeaky clean.

M.P. Birla Planetarium, Kolkata, is the largest planetarium in Asia and the second Largest planetarium in the World. This planetarium is situated adjacent to St. Paul's Cathedral Church and at a walking distance from both Rabindra Sadan and Maidan metro station. Here, the shows are timed and also available in different languages like Bengali, Hindi, English and each show continues for 40 minutes that can be enjoyed along with family and children. 1. Once you enter there is a blind spot i.e., to the right but no one will guide for the same. 2. It's a show of just half n hour that too with no updated stuffs about aur solar system. 3. The staff here is very rude defaming West Bengal's reputation as well as Birla group. 4. Birla group should definitely take some action so that people from PAN india never hesitate to speak about BIrla Planetorium.

The M.P. Birla Planetarium in Kolkata is an iconic structure which architecture as based on the famous Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi. Situated at 96, Jawaharlal Nehru Road, adjacent to St. Paul's Cathedral and near Victoria Memorial. The Planetarium opened its door on 29 September, 1962 and was formally inaugurated on 2 July, 1963 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime Minister of India.

Ok for kids and beginners for once. In the present time of Graphic advancement, this is a faded show. This Planetarium should mind following points to improve: 1. Seats are not arranged to look up and see, it will left the people with neck-pain. 2. They unnecessarily have fixed a cabin of presenters in the main round hall for their ease, but a big part of screen-projection remains covered by the shadow of that cabin, which breaks the wonder experience. 3. The recorded narrators keep shuffling the matters and don't present the show chronologically. 4. The management keep allowing late comers in the show for their earnings by offen opening doors which flashes the light from the doors to the screen projection. 5. No covid protocol followed by the management: all shows are allowed with offering all chairs. And also at the end exit ways remain so much in crowd. 6. Not very clear visuals.

  • 5/5 Shreya B. 2 years ago on Google
The shows are awesome, and it is offered both in English and Bengali. The tickets are 120 per person, and on Saturdays and Sundays it is very difficult to get a seat. There's always a line outside on holidays. One can have street food after coming out from the show and also visit the St. Paul's Cathedral which is right next door.

Fantastic place for 8 to 80 years old. Coopeartive staffs. Easy booking system. Affordable tickets. Multiple and multilingual show timings. Nice seating arrangement. Good sound system. The shows are real cracker. Very neat and clean inside. No restrictions on photography. Only concerning point is people are splitting on the boundary walls from outside carelessly. ALL, please take care of this.

Very good place, you can take your kids here..☺️☺️☺️

  • 2/5 Vikas S. 1 year ago on Google
As I have already seen some other planetariums I find it least intresting. Ticket is 120/- per person (child 3 year above full) which is too high for only 30 minutes show. Show is cosmic creations which is average. No parking arrangements. Even no sitting arrangement for waiting before show started. You have to wait on footpath. In my opinion it's waste of money and time.

  • 3/5 Kushal S. 1 year ago on Google
As the name this place shows us the solar system planets and all in that round screen. They take 120 per person and every hour they run this show from morning 12 to 6 pm! I personally think that for just 15-20 mins show 120 rupees was way higher and it was not worth it. It's just that if some parents want to show there children something different you can take them. Outside you will get some food and all they run the show in hindi english and bengali all timings are different

  • 4/5 yash_rajput1547 10 months ago on Google
The visit is very interested and they took 120 rs per head for 30min show which is good enough for everyone. The show will be run in three major language of west Bengal. 1 HINDI 2. BENGALI. 3. ENGLISH. if you are interested about space and rockets like me so you must visit there. thank you 😊✨💥.

  • 5/5 Shaurav B. 7 months ago on Google
I loved the show. You will get a panoramic view of the space, stars and the planets. Kids, and also the adults, will definitely enjoy the show. The shows are presented in 3 languages viz English, Hindi and Bengali. Also a mini museum is there and other space related scenes are shown on the TV screens. The planetarium can be easily reached and Maidan metro station is very near to the place. The Victoria Memorial is very near and the St. Paul's Cathedral is located just beside it.

Next level experience Show was only 20mint if in future the add VR glasses that time it's was supposed. Price 120₹ per person, Comfortable seat, But brighter I feel little low,

  • 3/5 Souradip C. 4 months ago on Google
This place was very nice by it's look but the main thing the space show was very basic and just 30 minutes long. On the other side the rate of ticket is 120 Rs. Per Person . We think the rate is not justified. I visited this place with my Girlfriend on 17.11.2023.

It was my bad luck that I have missed seeing this show since birth! It's such an amazing experience, and no doubt, it's so popular among kids. The best part is that it is available in Hindi, English, and Bengali. The clarity of the visuals is perfect, and the sound quality is top-notch. The tickets are priced at 120, and the show duration is 1 hour. One of the best experiences, the show was very interesting. There are shows in English, Hindi, and Bengali. You can find the show timings online and plan your visit accordingly. There definitely is a wait time of 15-30 minutes, so I would suggest reaching early and buying tickets. The place is good and well-maintained with beautiful premises. Shows are available in Bengali, Hindi, and English languages. Before going, confirm the timing of the show in your required language from the official website to avoid waiting. The show consists of various astronomical events, which are really informative and educating. After the show, you can also visit a small gallery that showcases information about astronomical events and Astronomers.
