Santragachi Jheel is a large lake, located beside Santragachi railway station. It has Chhottodal Club at one end while the Wagon Factory at the other end and adjacent to Sneha Birds View, a residential complex. One of the banks has a local market and railway station adjacent to Baksara market while the opposite bank mostly consists of residential complexes. This lake attracts a large number of migratory birds during winter months, particularly in December and January. The number has somewhat reduced in recent years as the lake is not properly cleaned and is mostly covered with water hyacinth. Birds like sarus crane from North America and Australia,  gadwall, northern shoveller, northern pintail, garganey which come from north of the Himalayas and many other local migratory birds such as cotton pygmy goose and knob-billed duck are spotted here during this season. The lesser whistling duck is the most dominant species visible here.

The best place you can see lots of bird here i live here and i love the place... Santragachi Jheel is a large lake, located next to the Santragachi railway station. It has Chhottodal Club at one end while the Wagon Factory (Reymon) at the other end adjacent to Sneha Birds View, a residential complex. One of the bank has local markets and railway station adjacent to Baksara bazar while the other bank mostly consists of residential complexes. This lake attracts large number of migratory birds in the winter months, particularly in December and January. The number has increased in recent years, as migratory birds have started to avoid destinations like the lakes in Alipore Zoo, Kolkata. Birds like sarus crane from North America and Australia, gadwall, northern shoveller, northern pintail, garganey from north of the Himalayasand many other local migratory birds such as cotton pygmy goose and knob-billed duck are spotted here during this season. However, the lesser whistling duck is the most dominant species visible here. The lake area is owned by South Eastern Railway, though the Forest Department of West Bengal also looks after the place. Every year before the migratory birds are expected to arrive, the Forest department cleans Water hyacinth from the lake, though leaving some portion of it which adds up to an environment suitable for the birds. Efforts are made by local residents, Forest Department and Railways to improve the environment for the birds

This year number of birds 🐦 visiting the jheel has increased. Although the water is not so clean and clear, yet the visitors are happy.

It is a very big water body...under south eastern railways....there are many migrating birds that come here every winter season..... The maintenance of the place is very bad.....nobody cleans the lake, neighbouring houses discharges the drainage water into the lake..... It could have been a very good place if it is maintained strictly.....people must become more aware about the cleanliness of the lake especially the neighbouring houses...

There's nothing to see there. No place to sit or anything. It was a horrible experience. We had such high expectations. It doesn't even deserve 1 star. Absolutely not worth coming.

It's not being maintained property. Nearby flats are directing their waste to the jheel via drains or manually.

With more than 6000 migratory birds straddling the waters of the Santragachi Jheel already, it seems that this year the total number is likely to cross 8000 before the end of the month. A migratory bird census and a bird watching programme, that came to an end on Sunday, were organised at the jheel last week. The fulvous whistling duck, whose sighting is considered to be irregular, made an appearance this year bringing more and more bird enthusiasts to the lake. The annual affair at the lake, which started a little over a decade back, has now become extremely popular among birdwatchers and environment activists. The census is organized every year and a species-wise classification is released to the district authorities and the state forest department at the end of the event. This year, a global optical major, Carl Zeiss, has tied up with the organisers — the local Chottodal Club and environment activists’ groups Prakriti Samsad and Howrah Bijnan Parishad — for the event. A large number of telescopes and binoculars will be available for enthusiasts to watch the winged visitors, along with live demonstration from experts.

In my opinion, there should be some kind of islands where birds can take rest, lay eggs and take care of the chicks. At present number of islands are insufficient. All the time birds cannot stay in water.

The Santragachi Jheel is a lake with birds of many types. It's perfect for day-tripping bird watchers and you could even go on a group trip. The number and variety of birds are decreasing because of global climate change and water pollution, among other reasons.

This small lake is ideal for viewing migratory birds during the winter. However, rampant uncontrolled pollution and poor maintenance has made this place unwelcome for the birds. Every year before the season the lake has to be cleared from overgrowth of water hyacinth. There are no basic facilities like clean toilet and drinking water for the bird watchers. Depending upon the pollution level and the annual restoration work, a few thousand birds make this place their winter home every year.

Santragachhi Jheel is a large lake, which is located beside the Santragachhi Railway Junction. This lake attracts a large number of migratory birds in the winter season, particularly in December and January. But due to unconsciousness of common people, the surrounding area remains filthy and full of garbage. So, the travellers are less attracted. The lake area is owned by South Eastern Railway, though the Forest Department of West Bengal also looks after the place. It is my request to them to take necessary steps to keep the lake and its surrounding clean. Then more number of travellers and bird lovers will be attracted to come here. The affort should also be made to convert the lake to a wildlife conservation centre, if possible.

One of the most famous migratory bird watching spots of West Bengal. It is located just beside the Santragachi Railway Station, surrounded by dense human population. The present condition of the jheel is very pathetic. Sewage water from surrounding houses drain into the jheel. One can see plastic wastes all around it. As a result the water quality is degrading day by day. A mark decrease in migratory bird assemblage is evident now.

Good place for bird photography during winter. It's huge jheel, situated in the residencial area on western side , shops on south-east side and . If one comes from Kolkata, local train is better option. Local trains are frequently available from Howrah railway station to Santragachi Railway station. It takes only 15-20 minutes. After getting out of the Santragachi railway station through platform number one, one can walk upto just 100 meter to reach the jheel. There is a single road all around the lake. Few seats are available on the eastern bank and western bank of the jheel to sit and enjoy the play of birds. Photography can be done from any where walking around the lake. About half of the lake is filled with water hyacinth plant which reduces the beauty. Cleanliness specially on side of residential area is a big issue. Observing sun set is a great experience. A must visit once for the bird photographer.

Year after year this waterbody is loosing it’s diversity and birdlife. In winter the variety of migratory birds are decreasing drastically. It's really a deep concern for me and all other naturalists of bengal. The competent authorities are less concerned about that.

This is lake situated very close to Satragachi railway station. Once it used to be large waterbody where migrating birds as far as from Siberia used to come during the winter . Unfortunately the size of the waterbody has been reduced to half , the access to this waterbody is unimaginable. The roads are broken , full of 2 or 3 wheelers and along with this there is sound pollution from the c noise of the locomotives and car/ scooter’s horn. Not a grt place to go unless u really want to have a glimpse of migratory birds.

It is an underrated jheel in West Bengal. The Govt. should take care about this more. In winter the Siberian migrant birds come here , which attracts a lot of tourists. It is a beautiful location for people to enjoy the nature, running , chitchatting with friends. location : Beside santragachi junction , Howrah, West Bengal people should not pollute the jheel , it should be preserved properly. I repeat understand its value before its death!

Big water body to maintain ecology of the entire area. Place for migratory birds. Poor maintenance of the area not eco friendly. Number of high rise constructed around the jheel. Human waste scattered around the Jheel. Broken boundary wall. Local people careless to preserve the environment. Need immediate action from govt as well as local people to start maintenance to save the jheel and environment.
