Update: I’m removing a star after their response since they clearly didn’t read/comprehend the review and are blaming covid for their lazy employees ignoring me. Best pulled pork I’ve had in Hawaii. They lose two stars because they left me standing at the entrance with nobody greeting me or telling me whether I seat myself or need to wait to be seated or order first or what. Multiple employees saw me and just ignored me.

My favorite restaurant to eat Hawaiian food when I’m in Hawai’i. The food was delicious and fast service.

We ordered takeout on Saturday, 1/29/22 @ 2 pm. There were a few parking stalls available. There was no line to order takeout. The indoor dining area was open. We ordered two combination plates. The Kalua Pig combination plate included Lomi Lomi salmon, pipikaula, brown rice, and for dessert haupia $15.25. The squid luau combination plate included include a squid luau, pipikaula, Maui greens, brown rice, and haupia $15.25. Portions were generous and so onolicious! Definitely highly recommend this place.

The service is quick and friendly. I felt like auntie was bringing me a plate at a cook out. The food was delightful and filling. I can't recommend this place enough.

I haven’t been here for ages! The last time I came was when they were across the street from what use to be Gem store (Now Don Quijote) in the corner of a strip mall. They were crazy busy then and now. Nothing like a taste of local foods!

Very traditional food 🍱 the server was a little bit rude they need to provide a better orientation a give to the costumer the best options to try this kind of food, they validate parking ticket and read a tutorial before you go. This was our first stop and first time once we get Hawaii.

This place has turned into our go to for Hawaiian food especially with visitors in town. There are many choices for food and everything we've tried, from the loco mocos, noodles, chicken, and pupus are so good. Everyone is super friendly and are willing to go through the menu with you to find just the right meal. Highly recommend visiting this place. You will leave full.

It was our last stop on our Honolulu food experience and it was honestly one of the better meals that we had. I had the beef stew plate and M had the LauLau and both of them were excellent. The flavors were perfectly set. The rice was ono

I had a wonderful dinner here while waiting to meet up with some X Factah friends. Beef stew, lomi salmon, fried rice, smoked meat, chicken long rice. This was followed by some yummy haupia for desert. This wonderful, amazing, traditional Hawaiian meal should be part of an "Introduction to Hawaii" class given to any Haole that steps foot on the island. It's a mix of traditionally inexpensive foods made with, as John Cruz so wonderfully put it, "Island Style." Take the hodgepodge leftova and make a miracle. Memories (and traditions) are built on food like this. My local girl wife made beef stew like this years ago, and I wouldn't eat it. Damn I was a fool. She left me, moved to Vegas, and now I gotta buy the stuff. Don’t be me, eat da fricking beef stew, build the memories, respect the culture, and cherish the miracle that is Hawaii.

We don't live in Hawaii, and during our brief visit we wanted to escape the tourist traps and experience some of the real local stuff. Some googling led us to this place. I am *so* glad we went here instead of the glitzy place on the beach. When we got there, there was a line and we were the only tourists - both great signs! After a brief wait, we were seated and helped by an incredibly friendly staff. Thanks to some other reviews we knew to order the chicken long rice for our picky eater, but we went more adventurous for the other family members and got a poke bowl and a Hawaiian sampler. Oh my gosh - so delicious. The atmosphere was very much "you are eating at a local restaurant," right down to the formica countertops and corrugated plastic cups for the drinks. A family next to us had their dog at the table and were feeding him from their own plates. This is REAL Hawaii, folks!!! Was reminded of my favorite comfort food spots back home in Boston. The focus here is clearly on great service, delicious food, and you leaving with a smile on your face. It's a 20-30 minute drive from the city (or it's literally across the street from a train stop if you want to take public transportation), but it's absolutely worth it to come and experience some of the authentic local flavor. Definitely will come back if we visit Honolulu again!!! Shown in pictures: Hawaiian sampler plate; salmon salad; mini loco moco; poke bowl. All wonderful!!!

We got the highway inn sampling plate. Loved the Kahlua pork and octopus plate. Their haupia was also very delicious. I did not really like the tomato and squid salad.

Homey welcoming vibe! Love the place, the people and the food. Wish we had more time but this will definitely be a restaurant we will come to in future visits

A local diner with amazing Hawaiian faire. The area was a bit rough but the place, people and especially the food was amazing. We went there for dinner and had the moco loco mini and kalua pig sliders. I bet it would be a good spot for brunch/breakfast! For sure the tastiest and most affordable meal we've had while visiting the island. Gluten free friendly spot (it's listed on their menu which is super helpful!)

This review is only for the chicken long rice since that’s all we had. My toddler is super picky and yet he loves the chicken long rice here. It was our first time having chicken long rice and we all loved it!

Service was a little slow, but also, they were busy during lunch, so no big deal at first but after we were seated it seems that we had to ask our waitress for items that should already be on the table right after we sit. Food portions are large and tasty, lots and lots of food, so choose wisely. My major complaint is that they do not tell you in advance that they are charging you 5 dollars more when you choose fried rice with your meal that brings rice. That's not cool. Overall, that experience and taste was what we wanted since arriving in Hawaii, the authentic Hawaiian flavors.

The original location in Waipahu. Great service, endless coffee, and they have vegan substitutes for local Hawaiian food.

Ono Hawaiian food !! Everything tasted great and the service was good too !! It was too busy when we went so the food came out fairly quick.

We heard they were on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive Ins and Dives about 10 years ago. Our family of 10 decided to give them a try. We had some picky eaters and adventurous. There was something for everyone and we all enjoyed our meals. Tons of flavor and perfectly salted and seasoned. Some of the dishes that knocked it out of the park: Hawaiian Moco- with lau lau chicken - the chicken fell apart it was so tender. The pig sliders were amazing and had a awesome smoked flavor. The kids enjoyed the bbq chicken and mochiko chicken, the flavor was subtle but amazing. Hands down if you want an authentic Hawaiian meal while in Oahu check them out!

Most of the Hawaiian food plate was good. Lau Lau though was a little too dry and not hot enough. Place is nice and open. Staff very friendly.

Very Good Hawaiian food. Very clean dining area and friendly staff who will explain the menu if you are new to authentic Hawaiian food. The Poi and Lau Lau were my favorite.

Great authentic Hawaiian food! No dine-in at this time but the take out we got was great!

  • 5/5 Nick P. 2 years ago on Google
Delicious, authentic Hawaiian food! I would highly recommend getting one of the tasting plates so that you can try all of the different dishes. I got their namesake, the Highway Inn Tasting plate, which included pork Lau Lau, poi, squid lū'au, kālua pig, lomi salmon, chicken long rice and sweet potato! I left very full, happy, and with leftovers for the next day. I would highly recommend this place to anyone, whether your home is Hawaii or not!

I have been looking forward to returning to this restaurant since the last time we visited the island over three years ago. It did not disappoint. The Loco Moco was fabulous with a rich gravy and flavourful beef patties. A definite must stop for good authentic island cuisine.
