A really great tour through Karonga and Malawian history. And just about the only thing to do in Karonga if you have a few hours to kill. Great tour guides, passionate people, and a friendly atmosphere. Don’t miss this experience!

Very informative on general history of Northern Malawi and so great to see the dinosaur artifact! They could do better with outside signage.

Visited October 2020. Looked closed and almost abandoned from the outside, but turned out to be open! Fascinating museum, really well laid out with informative exhibits. The building is beautiful too especially from the inside with its curved roof. The museum director is also a character with lots of stories on the history of the building and museum. Cafe in the car park was open too. Well worth a trip to Karonga.

The Karonga Museum is located in the town of Karonga which is situated on the northern shore of Lake Malawi in Malawi Africa. The museum is known for its rich collection of artifacts and fossils that showcase the cultural and paleontological history of the region. The museum was established in 1985 and since then has been a prominent hub for researchers historians and tourists interested in learning about the diverse cultural heritage and natural history of the Karonga area. The museum is housed in a building that has been designed to resemble a traditional Tongwe dwelling which adds to its unique charm. One of the major highlights of the museum is its paleontological exhibits. The Karonga area has been a treasure trove of fossils particularly those of ancient hominids. In 1913 the fossilized remains of the "Karonga Man" were discovered here adding a significant chapter to the human evolutionary story. It’s a great spot for history lovers. I appreciated seeing the malawisaurus skeleton. That’s probably the closest i could ever get to learning about dinosaurs here in Africa!

Home to Malawisaurus, close to main road, with a secure carpark. I enjoyed my learning journey with guide tours. Has an inexpensive but offering good food, restaurant beside it.

I really enjoyed my visit to this museum. They did a nice job providing the background and history of the local area. Malawi is a neat country with rich history (some Happy some not so much). We learned about the devastating slave trade that happened here, very sad. But that's not the only story. The community and outsiders rallied around this museum and did a nice job. It's not huge but staff was nice and we met one of the founders who spent time with us answering questions. Also, Malawisaurus is super cool.
