Tsunami Monument honors the victims of a 2004 tsunami that claimed the lives of more than 100 people, destroyed countless buildings, and left nearly two-thirds of Male flooded in the aftermath. The spiraling monument stands on the edge of the sea in memory of those who were affected by the tragedy. Ponder the incredible power of nature as you look out over the sobering memorial and the waters beyond. Plan my day in Male using traveler tips and tourist information provided by Inspirock.

The Tsunami Moment is a freestanding memorial to the victims of the devastating 2004 tsunami, located in Boduthakurufaanu Magu in southeast Malé. The tranquil location is perfect to reflect upon the events of the fateful day, and is frequented by history enthusiasts and kin of the victims. The beach nearby is a popular surfing spot too. The tsunami that struck the Indian Ocean on the 24th of December claimed the lives of 74 Maldivians, and the Tsunami Monument is a monument marvel that stands as a beacon of hope after tragedy. The 20 steel spheres encircling the monument symbolize the atolls of the country, while the rising pillars stand for the waves of the tsunami. The rods of the structure pay homage to the victims of the disaster and the names of the 74 victims are carved on the edifice.

The Tsunami Monument is located on the south eastern part of Male city, on the Boduthakurufaanu Magu. This Tsunami Monument was dedicated for those who lost their lives in the boxing day 2004 Tsunami, originated from Aceh, Indonesia. The sea surrounding of this monument is one of best spot for surfing within Male. The monument is famous not only for its history but also for its uniqueness architecture. The design of the memorial represents different aspects of the 2004 Tsunami in the Maldives which made a lot of Maldivian died; many houses, buildings and businesses were destroyed in that year.

This is a nice place for an outing with a friend or family. This Tsunami Monument was originally erected in Henveiru Lonuziyaaraiykolhu area. It was there for many years. However, it has been moved from there to the current location, to make way for the bridge.

There are places to relax in the area. You can enjoy the view of ocean and sunset here. The monument is not very fancy and is quite small than what I imagined. But it's a good place to visit once.

Tsunami Monument is built on the Boduthakurufaanu Magu (acclaimed area in the Maldives) on the southeast part of Male city, Maldives. The Tsunami Monument is a remembrance of the people who lost their lives in the 2004 Tsunami, which started from Aceh, Indonesia (It’s known for seashores). The ocean encompassing of this landmark is one of the best spots for surfing inside Male. The commemoration plan represents various parts of the 2004 Tsunami (arrangement of waves in a water body) in the Maldives. Numerous people lost their livelihood and their near and dears. A visit to the landmark is a passionate token of the disaster that unfolded that day. The region is also a respected spot for a casual walk or calm contemplation.

The Tsunami monument was constructed as a memorial to the Maldivian lives lost, during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami by former President, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in 2005.

It was a nice walk all the way there. Just a monument and there are no signages, so you may not know what it is unless you are looking for it. Good to visit nonetheless, if you want to show some respect.

a palce built in the memory of the Maldivians who lost their life on the Tsunami disaster.

  • 2/5 Chaand B. 5 years ago on Google
The monument is fine but not creative, too many smokers and it is very polluted since it is right next to the jetty which also makes it very noisy. Tourist should not go there because its a waste of time.
