The Wellesley Bridge, built in Seringapatam (Srirangapatna) in 1804 and named after Lord Wellesley (Governor General) who came to India in 1798 at a time when the British were locked in a life and death struggle with France all over the world. The British army attacked and defeated Tippu Sultan in a brief but fierce war in 1799. After the fall of Tippu Sultan in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war, the construction of this bridge was taken up in August 1802 by Dewan Poornaiah during the reign of Mysore King Sri Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. This bridge was completed in October 1804, which is now greater than 200 years old and still carries vehicular traffic including 4 wheelers. This engineering marvel was built using monolithic stone pillars and this has been featured in many Indian movies.

Wellesley Bridge, over the Kaveri at Srirangapatam, was erected in 1804, under the direction of Dewan Purnaiya, at the cost of 5Β½ lakhs, and named after the Governor-General, the Marquis of Wellesley. It is an interesting specimen of native architecture, being composed of stone pillars, capped with stone corbels, and surmounted by stone girders, on which the flags of the roadway are laid. Though rough in construction, the bridge has survived the heaviest floods for a century without injury. That was a description written about the bridge about a 100 years back....

British construction marvelous, just made with rock blocks … has loads of history , this was one of the bridge connecting south of Kaveri to north … while roaming in srirangapattana you can just take a drive on to this bridge and see it’s construction . Won’t be busy. Though river as usual polluted
