👍 The dam built under the guidance of Sir M Vishweshwaraiah is very cool with auto operation The gates are closed and open randomly and the people who work there show the working of dam The sight is very nice to look at with vast stretches of water to see. But go either early in morning or evening as... People often mention water, good, visit, view, road, beautiful, Good, maintained, gates, built,

The dam built under the guidance of Sir M Vishweshwaraiah is very cool with auto operation The gates are closed and open randomly and the people who work there show the working of dam The sight is very nice to look at with vast stretches of water to see. But go either early in morning or evening as there is no shaded area for cover The area /garden below the dam can be improved There are several steps to reach the top of dam No wheelchair access. Cars/bikes can be parked on road leading to dam and there is no designated space. There are some small stall to eat and drink sugarcane juice but better to carry your own food or drink

Awesome Dam with great view during sunset. Roads are not well maintained and entry should be restricted properly at the water gate draining, the water suction is bit high and kids shouldn't be accessing these places for their safety purposes. No watchman too. Few people were seen fishing they too should be restricted.

Peaceful place. Initially the steps are a bit steep but once you reach the top, it is a beautiful place with water on one side and greenery on the other. Walkway is nice and long which is made of concrete. Great sights all around. Sincere request to visitors: Please do not throw your snack wrappers anywhere and make the place dirty. Preserve the natural world and give the gift of nature to your next generations.

It's water dam, kind of felt isolated place, read many bad review about the place such as thief around and rob your car, better be cautious and careful while visiting. But place found calm and good to see cool breeze, good for walking👣 jogging🏃, also the board says restricted entry.

If you come here on a weekday, you will find it very less crowded and can literally hear the sound of nature. The park is not maintained although that gives nature to shape it in its own way. A must visit place I must say but not much to do there other than shoking the sounds of the water waves.

Less explored but can surprise you. Good place to take a stroll in the evening. Easy access from the highway and decent road conditions. Parking also is easy to find and dam is just a few metres away from the road. Recommend to visit during evening.

This is another parameter to explore the gem called Markonahalli Dam is that unlike huge and monster dams of today, that the dam gates are kept open always, still the water does not flow unless the dam is full (it’s cool right). This is because the dam has 4 small, 2 big, and 10 wood siphons which when the dam is full will automatically allow water to pass through. Also, the drive from Bangalore is all awesome, you need to keep paying tolls in return for driving on the best national highway. Then you take a diversion from NH and enjoy 10Km of the rural landscape of Karnataka till you reach the water body. Believe me, the landscape is truly beautiful. Sure, let me very honest with you, Markonahalli Dam or the area around it doesn’t have much to offer if you are a thing to tick of the typical “things to do style”. However, it is a boon for nature lovers and who just want a relaxing day or weekend from Bangalore, the afternoon can be very hot and hence I recommend going either very early or late evening.

It's a good place for mornings, take some nice pictures along the Dam. The reservoir is fairly large and the views will are nice. Better slightly early in the morning, as it can get quite sunny after 11. There are couple of vendors outside selling sugar cane juice and others. Else carry water bottle. Remember to NOT litter and throw away waste in dustbins.

Been on my list to visit and finally I did it!! This place is very close to the highway and can be easily missed. There is a board though which points to this place. Place is clean and hope that they maintain it that way! I entered the dam from a side gate - which is a pretty long walk to the outlets - which were impressive to see. I was guided to the main gate for visit. Few temporary shops were there. Before you walk up- just walk straight and you get to see another view of the gushing water. Paid the man ₹20 to walk across the dam and get down the steps on the other side. Views from here were just awesome. Sat there for a long time soaking in the whole experience. Due to recent rains, they had to let go off water and it has damaged the slender road that you see in the pics. There are no safety railings so please be very careful. But this is a place you must visit in this season ❤️

Fabulous place, never knew that Yediyur had a gem like this one! If you go during rainy season you get to see the water gushing out of the Dam at immense speed! There are 2 view points, one is at the base and for the other you've to climb the stairs. The view point at the top has an entry fee of Rs 100 which is waived off if you're a govt employee. The view is spectacular frm both ends although I would favour the one at the base. Parking and entry is free, however the road leading to this place from the highway is so bad, it's non existent.

Best place watch the serenity of the nature and dam. It was full with water so it was beautiful to watch. Do visit without fail if you have gone to visit Yediyur temple. Road is not so good for 1 km near Dam.

This dam, built on the Shimsha river, is located close to Yediyur. The road leading to the dam is ridden with potholes. There is no entry fee to visit this place. One can climb the steps to the top to view the reservoir and then go see the water being released from the sluice gates up close. The place is not very well maintained with plastic and garbage littered at some places. The installed swings and slide are broken. Also, we are not allowed to go on top of the dam. However, it's a very good time to visit right now as the reservoir has attained Full Reservoir Level(FRL) after many years.

Visited this place 2 months ago, while coming back to bangalore from shravanabelagola. The road to this place from the highway is a bit bad, its muddy and rocky and jumpy,But the view of this place is amazing. The sound of the water and the view just gives us a peace of mind. There were some locals who called themselves gatekeepers and demanded 20 rs for entry(i am pretty sure they weren't officials😄. When i visited the dam wasn't opened but the other side(river) was amazing. You can easily spend time here for a small picnic with an amazing view. Overall this was a good place to visit. see the attached photos and video for my perspective😅.

Well maintained dam, thankfully people haven’t littered the place yet. Beautiful scenery and pretty huge reservoir. One can visit the dam bridge opening by paying few bucks to the folks there who would explain and take you down to a small room where the gates opening mechanism can be seen. The last 1km if road is not good, rest is amazing.

Good place to have to roam on the way to Salem. 60km from Bangalore, the road is clean and open. It's the first automated dam to control overflow in water via air pressure. A small history of this dam from where the water is coming and how this dam is helpful for more than 100 villages and districts by local guide there.

  • 4/5 Vikram R. 1 year ago on Google
This place is very calm and pleasant place. Evening we can sit and relax and enjoy the dam. It's one of the first automatic gates dam built by wodeyars. They have manual gates also. Automatic gates will open once it reaches 89 feet.

  • 5/5 Mohammed Y. 11 months ago on Google
A very beautiful and hidden gem, with local guides educating about the place's history. Spread across more than nearly 500-600 Acres, providing water for many villages around it. No parking issues, No tickets. But don't leave kids unattended as there are safety issues at many places.(no grill for steps Etc) If improved this place can attract a good number of visitors. It is around 90kms from Bangalore with good roads.

  • 5/5 Kunal B. 3 years ago on Google
If you planning for a ride, then this place is worth the ride as the roads are good and away from the city pollution. The best time to visit will be in Winters, the water through the dam is a very rare sight here but you can get close to the water. Water is not so clean to get into it. Looking for a half day trip then this is worth. For couples I feel its safe unless you don't stay after the dark. Enjoy your ride! #garudaclubs?

Markonahalli Dam is built across the river Shimsha in the Kunigal Taluk of Tumkur district. It was built by Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the king of Mysore under the guidance of his Diwan, Sir M Visweswaraiah. It was built to irrigate 6,070 hectares of land and has a masonry structure of 139 m and a pair of earth dams extending to 1,470 metres on either side
