What
do
I
know
about
rock
climbing?
Nada.
So
when
I
was
told
that
this
hike
is
safe
for
beginners,
I
gladly
said
yes
to
a
Holy
Thursday
hike
to
the
Nagpatong
Rock
Formation
in
Tanay,
Rizal.
The
heavenly
photos
of
climbers
at
the
summit
were
irresistibly
tempting,
but
I
did
not
realize
it
was
almost
at
the
cost
of
our
lives.
I
can
now
laugh
about
it
because
I've
done
it,
not
without
the
help
of
our
master
climber
guides,
Robert
and
Renald.
We
started
the
hike
at
6:12
am,
reaching
the
base
of
the
vertical
climb
to
the
summit
at
7:23
am.
I
had
several
near-miss
slips
because
the
rainfall
from
the
previous
night
made
the
trail
muddy
and
slippery.
There
was
a
point
when
we
were
instructed
to
wear
gloves
because
we
might
have
to
hold
on
to
sharp
rock
edges
and
spiny
tree
branches.
The
tricky
part
was
the
90-degree
vertical
climb
through
sturdy
bamboo
ladders,
interspersed
with
areas
where
the
abrupt
slope
changes
are
sharp
rocks
with
foot-deep
crevices.
Robert
instructed
me
to
hold
on
tight
to
the
blue
rope
with
my
right
hand,
sink
the
left
foot
into
the
fissure,
and
use
momentum,
core,
and
shoulder
strength
to
hurl
myself
up
to
the
next
step
upward.
At
this
point,
I
questioned
myself
why
did
I
do
this?
What
if
my
momentum
and
powers
are
not
enough
to
make
it
further?
Bakit
walang
harness?
Nagpatong
hike
is
scarier
than
sky-diving,
I
now
realize.
A
misstep
can
easily
lead
me
to
heaven
or
hell,
wherever
my
judgment
leads
me.
When
I
finally
reached
the
summit,
the
adventure
was
all
worth
the
beauty
of
what
I
was
experiencing.
It
turns
out
that
Robert
was
not
just
a
climbing
guru.
He
was
also
a
master
photographer
with
camera
tricks
up
his
sleeve.
The
itinerary
also
included
a
refreshing
dip
at
the
Tungtong
Falls.
I
thought
it
would
be
easier,
but
that's
another
story.
It
was
just
as
tricky.
Despite
the
near-misses,
I
went
home
without
a
scratch.
My
husband
cannot
even
say
the
same.
