(Translated by Google) It is a fascinating site, they sell jewelry, emeralds, salt lamps, the tour is great and there are restaurants to delight in Colombian cuisine. It has a good parking lot and you can see part of the Cundinamarquesa savanna in a beautiful and overwhelming way. Of my favorites, recommended! What can I say about La Primera Maravilla de Colombia (Colombia's first Marvel) that has not been said before? It is just as breathtaking and spectacular as the descriptions. It is truly a magnificent piece of architecture and engineering, and to hear the story of the miners was truly inspiring. This is a must do for anyone visiting Bogota.

The idea of an underground Cathedral, carved in the walls of a still working salt mine is almost out of a fairy tale. Attending mass was a whole new experience. Unfortunately, it was too crowded and with no supervision. People would remove their masks to take photos almost climbing on top of the crosses. Crowd control in times of covid should be a top priority not an afterthought.

I guess it's a must see but the excessive commercial approach American Park style turn the place into a tourist trap. The entrance fee is way above the ground, around 30 dollars per head same as Escobar museum scam. Inside the mine, at the end you feel more in a commercial center like an internal airport... it's nice but the value for money is not there.

Review for February 2019. The salt Cathedral located in Zipaquira. It is a small town north outside of the capital city Bogota Colombia. It's about an hour drive from the Capital of Bogota Colombia. I'm not guilty, to say that I absolutely love everything history to do with the church. The salt cathedral in this case was established back in the sixteenth century. It is remarkable in that it is a literal active Catholic Church Cathedral that is constructed inside a lime Stone Mountain. One of the most interesting things that I remember is that, I had a bottle of fresh water before walked into the cathedral. And when I walked out the bottled water was turned into salt water when I took a sip. Have something to do with the density of the limestone in the mountains.

Definitely the best place I have ever been to in my entire life. It was something that I never seen it. If you are a gamer, you might feel like you are in a dungeon that you can get the final weapon or a place to upgrade your classes.

I went to the other salt cathedral in the world, in Poland and liked that one much better than this one. This one was not exactly what I expected. For foreigners the tickets are around $30. The tour guide only spoke in spanish, but they did have an audio guide to purchase. It's a good idea to bring headphones for that. The first part of the tour is just crosses representing the stations of the cross. The big cathedral area was cool, but the rest of it was very commercialized... shops, coffee stands, food for sale.. I was kinda bummed it wasn't more rustic or mine/cave like. I mean they even had a movie theater down there. On the positive side, I didn't feel claustrophobic at all as the ceilings are high. Also, this mine is pet friendly and they have carts you can put your pets in as you do the tour.

One of the coolest experiences we've had from a spiritual and architectural point of view. The work that went into this is amazing. My advice is to ditch the tour group and go at your own pace. It's much more personal this way. There are also many other great attractions, stores, and a spa inside the mine. It is a must see for all!

Awesome place; really a wonder. Once you start walking into the mountain, you get a sort of sacred feeling out of all this pilgrimage through the stages of Jesus crucifixion. I got the regular ticket, which gives you access to almost everything, but if I were to go back, I would take the premium package to have all the miner experience. Also, make sure to buy some souvenirs to support local businesses, as this town literally survives on the salt mines.

So cool! They carved a cathedral out of an old salt mine. We went in 1978 and again in 2023. They added the stations of the cross in the 90's which was really interesting. We were able to get a wheelchair for my mother with just a driver's license. We took a guided tour, but they also have audio tours for languages other than Spanish. They were doing two different visual media pieces in two caverns. I am not sure how often that occurs. there was an ice cream vendor that was really tasty.

It’s nice to walk down through the mines. I especially enjoyed seeing the emeralds sticking out of the walls in the mine tunnel display. It certainly is different than seeing them mined. The tree of life is incredible. And the show was amazing. The tour was in Spanish, which I don’t speak. And the place was a blast. It will be in nice to do it all over again.

The trip was very simple. I didn't pay for the tour, but it was cool they had a electronic interpreter for english speakers. I paid for my tickets through Google. Although I think I paid more for my Colombian friends it was a lot simpler. As for the trip it was amazing, very gorgeous, not cold except for a few drafts of wind that I was not able to pinpoint. You don't have to be a Catholic to appreciate the time and effort it took to carve out this Cathedral. But if you are there was a mass while I was there. "Yes" the church is still being used. I'll let the photos speak for themselves. My favorite is called the Dome. Its suppose to represent the gateway to heaven. Second was just the view of the city below. And the cultural artifacts. And many more 😊😊

The first part of the cathedral is really. It has a very unique way of showing the 14 stages of the cross. Definitely do the audio tour since it gives a lot of insight on this and the rest of the cathedral. After all the impressive stuff you come in the commercial area and what a shame is that. The 3D movie is interesting but so much of the commercial area seems like a bad cash grab, to the point that they constructed some sort of village with all kinds of shops, not fitting the underground atmosphere at all. It's sad to see something so beautiful commercialised so badly, it's almost as bad as Amsterdam in that remark.

The salt cathedral is AMAZING. Religious or not, youth cannot help but be impressed by the craftsmanship on display in this salt mine After going through the stations on the cross, you end up in the cathedral far below the surface. They're is a free audio tour that will answer most all of your questions. Disappointingly, the tunnels end with some tourist trap vendors, but if you can push past them, you'll see an incredible art exhibit. Plan several hours to explore this salt mine, which is still in production today.

An absolute wonder. Very rarely do you get to see what a deep mine looks like, let alone one that has been converted into a church. Well worth the day trip from Bogota. The main hall is incredible and the size of the chambers are amazing. Also there is a free English walking tour which we recommend as they tell you all about it. Like anywhere the shops are tacky but watching the movie they have inside that is free and understanding that you are in only one small part makes it even more amazing. One of the best things we did in Colombia.

The cathedral is very interesting in it's concept. Huge salt mine in deep cave. First rooms you enter are mysterious and main hall is magnificent. But market area really spoils all the atmosphere. Worth visiting if you are in Bogota.

A must visit in Colombia. Impressive structure and design. I was very impressed even as a person of no faith in any religion. The miners must have been strong in their believes to construct what has been designed and accomplished. Please go and experience your feelings.

Truly unique but it’s not worth the time and money. We hired a driver to take us from bogota. With tragic it took over 2 hours. Then they charged 113,000 per person so it’s very overpriced. All you see are crosses of the same type and size, a few coloured LED- lights. Take the stairs down from the angel to the cathedral… it was beautiful took my mind off the 2 hour ride back.

This salt cathedral is the most amazing spot so far in my Colombia travel. The tunnels and cross are just amazing. We are lucky to see a lightning show and a wedding ceremony. I wholeheartedly recommend this place for anyone visiting Colombia. They did change different prices for the local people and foreigners.

This is the third time that I've been here but the first time in about 15 years and it sure has changed a lot. It's more commercial or touristy now, for lack of better terms. They practically have a shopping mall down there, which wasn't in the mine before. I probably shouldn't complain since I bought stuff in there, LoL. The "mine" part of it is still good and worth the trip though.

Dangerous diesel exhaust from people mover “train” to the surface. My group got headaches while waiting at the bottom of the diesel exhaust particulate filled cave. For a place that boasts the alleged health benefits of the salt on the body in the lungs it’s all fully invalidated by the carelessness of the diesel poisoning, a carcinogen, which causes lung cancer and has a positive association with bladder cancer. Most importantly is the staff that spends weeks and months inside the cave exposed to the horrible diesel exhaust fumes. Aside from that, cool hole! With the vast abundance of inexpensive local strata 6 labor may the “first great wonder of Colombia” serve as a memorial for all the souls it still claims daily.

I visited back in January, and there was barely a line to get in (during the week). A true unique experience that I’m so glad was recommended to me. I’m not a religious person, but it still was interesting to walk through, and makes for beautiful one of a kind photos. The different color lights throughout were a great touch. The shops at the end were not pushy for sales, the food shops were delicious and priced well.

There is a long walk from the parking lot to the ticket booth. Once you buy your ticket, you go to a second booth to get your audio your if you don’t understand Spanish. Then you walk into the mine and join a guide. You can’t go on your own. The guide gives information about how the sculptures were made and the meaning of the abstract art for the various stations of the cross and then the cathedral itself. The English audio tour was very good and there was time for everyone in the group to take pictures. We really liked the cathedral itself and were there at 5 pm when they do a multimedia production around the Angelus prayer. It is a long walk down and fortunately when you exit a little train takes you back near the ticket office. We enjoyed the work that was put into the carving by the miners as well as the religious significance. We did not go to any other activity as it was getting late

This is an amazing experience. I have been here a week in Bogota and this is the best thing I have seen (well, climbing Montserrat is a tie) If you can try to be near the main altar for the light show. Worth it. I attached a video of it. I was in the upper chamber during the show.

This cathedral is about an hour drive from Bogota. The cathedral is is quite big and it takes about an hour an half to see the whole place. They asked us to show passport for a questionaire, then when you are buying tickets and again when you are getting a guide. It was definitely better than expected. The entrance fee is 98.000 and you can pay by card.

The salt cathedral is considered one of the top tourist destinations in Colombia. This attraction is carved out of a huge salt deposit that has been operating as a salt mine for two centuries. There is a small gift shop area that carries a small, but nice collection of emerald jewelry. This is a unique and interesting visit.

Many friends and locals spoke highly of it and recommended that we went. We are glad we did. Make sure to purchase tickets ahead of time as it will help you cut the line as it was fairly long. Bring a sweater and tennis shoes. The floor is fairly uneven and it gets pretty cool as we work your way down We are glad we did all of these things. When you go, take your time before you go in to take pictures of the beautiful statues and the view. It is breathtaking up there. Also, stop at some of the souvenir shops. Once you make your way towards the end, there are some coffee shops where you can rest before you start your way up which you can make it by foot or by train. We recommend the train and there is no additional cost to it.

On a recent trip to Columbia, I decided to visit the Salt Cathedral. It's located about an hour and a half outside of Bogota, and it's a very scenic and relaxing drive. The countryside actually reminded me of Vermont in the summer. The entrance was somewhat unassuming, but after going 180 meters down into the mines, you'll start seeing the true beauty of this place. The stations of the cross, the Cathedral and the many, many other intricate religious displays here are simply amazing! My guide, Samara, spoke excellent English, and we had a very good conversation throughout the whole experience. 😊

What an unexpected place. It's truly amazing to see the sheet scale of the salt mines in person, and then see what they have now done with them. Please not if coming from Bogota out driver told us traffic is always bad. We came from the AC Hotel and took 90 mins there and 120 mins back for a 24 mile total drive.

Beautiful and unique cathedral, awe inspiring size! It is not expensive ($21 CAD), and the basic passport includes entry, audio guide in English, a movie and a virtual reality experience. They call it the first wonder of Colombia, for good reason! Bathrooms are free and inexpensive food is available for purchase inside. My friend and I had lunch for $4 :)

This place is a must see in Zipaquira! It's truly an amazing experience. When you arrive you will be given an electronic device that provides an audio guided tour in English or Spanish. I would highly recommend having a pair of earbuds on hand. After the tour is complete there are plenty of souvenirs to commemorate your experience. The immense size of the cathedral is awe inspiring, and the carvings are absolutely stunning. This trip to Colombia was wonderful and we created many memories here.

This famous cathedral is underground in a geologically stable former salt mine. The stations of the Cross and the Narthex display amazing stone cutting. All representations of the symbols of faith are figurative. You will enjoy and be amazed by this spectacular work underground. Temperature is pleasant.

We had a frustrating experience trying to get tickets - what should be a fairly mundane thing took more than twenty minutes with a line that was out the door and barely moved until a bunch of people left. Once inside, however, it was incredible. Every view of a cavern illuminated by soft light was as breathtaking as the last. The information provided on the listening devices was helpful and succinct. Overall a great experience!

(Translated by Google) It really deserves to be a wonder of Colombia, it has advanced a lot in commercial spaces and services, the coffee that is inside is delicious although not so cheap and as for the souvenirs, there is something for all budgets, the one located at the exit It is the cheapest and has a variety of gifts. To get out I recommend walking to the entrance, it does not take more than 20 minutes to return at a good pace and you can take advantage of the spaces to a greater extent if you want to take photos. The train departure is a bit delayed and has little capacity. Additionally, with this type of transport, one is more exposed to social interaction not suitable for the pandemic.

A cathedral of salt 660 ft (200 m) below ground that inspires and awes. When the Prussian naturalist Alexander von Humboldt (1769–1859) visited Colombia in 1801, he believed that the deposits of halite (rock salt) mined at Zipaquirá were larger than any of the mines found in Europe. The mines had been exploited for centuries, during which time miners had carved sanctuaries where they prayed for protection in their dangerous labor. In the 1930s, they had excavated an underground church, and in 1950 N. SouthAmericabegan to turn this church into a salt cathedral, dedicated to Our Lady of Rosary, the patron saint of miners. Structural and safety problems led to the cathedral’s closure in 1992, but in response, the miners built a new cathedral 197 ft (61 m) below the old one. Inaugurated on December 16, 1995, the cathedral has three naves and 14 small chapels for each Station of the Cross, their icons and architectural details carved out of the halite rock.

Great experience. All the photos you can find don’t show the immense size of the place. Everyone is extremely polite and the tour is worth every penny. Bring money to buy unique souvenirs too.

Wow, so deeply felt, the heart in the craftsmanship was displayed so perfectly. Do not miss this on your trip to bogota, just one hour away in the quaint and historically rich town of Zipaquira, a town who fought so tirelessly for their independence. I didn’t want to leave!

A one hour drive from Bogota. The Salt Cathedral is breath taking at the least. It's hard to believe they built a Cathedral 600 feet below the surface. No need for a guided tour package like most vendors try to impose on you. Once you arrive you'll be given a audio headset that will inform you and guide you along on the tour. You'll save yourself some money and time. You can expect to spend approx 2 hours. On your way back to Bogota stop at Andrés Carne de Res for another incredible adventure. The food is amazing and this is a must see.

Terrible experience, we acquire the standard package which included the city tour. It was a total rip off. City Tour was just a train to take us back to ticket booth and the tour guide didn’t keep the group together, we lost him after 10 minutes.

Amazing Place! I never thought it would be such an amazing and unique place! The destination name is totally wrong, it doesn't describe what it really is! Salt Cathedral makes me think of just another church make out of salt or such, but boy i was wrong! It is an underground Salt mines development that is as huge as a city! it is not just a simple cathedral, it is an HUGE underground development!!! This is a MUST visit in Colombia! it is like visiting the Pyramids in Egypt! It is that magnitude but all underground at around 180 meters below surface, so it is mind blowing! and pictures cannot describe it!

Definitely a must see site whether you are religious, Christian, or not. Remarkable use of an old mine

  • 4/5 Seamus M. 2 years ago on Google
The salt mine church feature and all of the obviously difficult work completed is impressive. The massive injection of commercialism is quite over the top unfortunately. Worth one trip.

Must visit tourist place in the heart of Zipaquira. The underground Cathedral will surprise you with the architectural work. Plenty of stores inside to eat & you can even buy souvenir to take back home as memories.

This place is amazing! Definitely take a bottle of water because you will be walking a lot. There are a couple of cafeterias and a spa. You can buy a lot of salt souvenirs there and they accept credit cards. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. I really recommend the tour where they take you mining salt, for me it was the best part of the trip.

It’s a bit of a drive north of Bogotá. There are lots of different salt cathedrals. After the 4th or 5th we just started wandering around. I believe there is also an available tour of an actual salt mine which in hindsight I regret not inquiring about as I think that would have been interesting.

No words to describe this incredible experience in my life. How people had the idea to build a cathedral underground. Almost in the end of the visit, start the business of selling everything related the cathedral that in my opinion worth. Second time in Colombia, first time at the capital Bogota , just 1h20m and I can say, YOU MUST TRY.

This place was amazing. One of the most beautiful sites around Bogota. A must see. I recommend a private guide and get there early before the crowd.

Very unique cathedral located 600ft underground. If you go, take the tour - so much to learn. I paid for the highest package and did not regret it. Expect about 3hrs to complete the cathedral tour. If visiting the area, plan to get there at 8am so you can do all the activities. About 30 dollars allows you to rock climbing, cathedral tour, private experience as a miner, history movie, and tour of the town. A must if in bogota - paid $90 for a private driver from bogota and back.

Amazing place to visit if you are in Bogotá. Take into account that is a round trip of >3 hours in private transportation (from the airport area). I recommend purchasing a tour or at least tickets in advanced via internet, and attending the guided tour where they explain the history of the mines.

  • 4/5 Matthew R. 1 year ago on Google
Super cool attraction, worth a visit if you're in the area. The audio tour is definitely the way to go, and allows you to explore the space at your own pace. The whole tour is a bit of a hike, but it's not very strenuous and should be achievable for most people. The sculptures are beautifully lit and the history of the place is very interesting.

Having visited Cathedral de Salt in 2011, this was my second time. We had bought our tickets at one of the restaurants. This saved a lot of time. On arrival, we could therefore walk straight to the entrance. It can be quite crowded, so make sure you have enough water. At the entrance are several snack facilities, souvenir shops and toilet facilities. At the entrance, you queue up and go in dosed per group with a guide. For tourists, they have audio guides. The route is 1 kilometre there and 1 kilometre back and along the way the guide tells you about the history of the site. They have highlighted different parts beautifully. You can also choose to walk by yourself.

  • 2/5 Alexandra K. 10 months ago on Google
We got in line at the ticket office and they wanted us to preregister online with all kinds of personal information. Like this you get a code that you show at the counter. Why are you collecting all this information? We didn’t see the point of doing it and just walked up to the counter without the code. It was fine but they still wanted to write down our ID numbers. Additionally at the next (Audio guide) counter they ask you for your phone number. We said we don’t have one but they said “it is necessary“. What for? Not everyone has a local number, and isn’t it enough that I pay a lot more (extranjero price) than a local? (98k cop vs. 61k cop) Once inside there are some interesting places where you can see ancient underground tunnels that they made into what you see today… Plus lots of shops and a whole commercial area.

It was amazing. I didn't know what to expect but I was surprised by how high the roof was in many rooms of the cavern/mine. I took a taxi from Bogota to the Salt Cathedral and got the ticket with the english audio option. I did the tour on my own time and explored all the stations of the cross. Each room has a history, and it was so beautiful to see people being so reverent. The carven/mine transitionsed into a more commercialized space with booths, shops, and even a theater. You have the option to take a shuttle out or walk back to the entrance. I enjoyed it.

  • 5/5 Ken A. 11 months ago on Google
From the scenic views, rich history and seeing Cathedral de Sal for the first time was truly memorable. Best to go here in the morning and spend until the afternoon as there are lot of shops after the stations. There is also a cool spot for coffee and desserts near the photo printing area.

  • 5/5 Emanuele 7 months ago on Google
Amazing, even though super touristic. Yes the ticket is a bit pricey, but IMHO it’s worth it as the visit really takes 1.30-2 hours to do properly. It’s so weird the shopping mall at the bottom of the cathedral… less shops would have made the place feel more authentic. Nonetheless, you can walk inside, and then go and visit Zipaquira which is a real Colombian “village” and enjoy there as well.

  • 5/5 Ana Maria V. 8 months ago on Google
Overall super impressive from the last time we where here which was about 10 years ago. There is stores, massage places, coffee places and of course the churches inside. I didn’t expect it to have developed so much. I do want to point out that price increase for foreigns, I know that countries all over the world do this too so I can’t really complain about it. I live in the US but was born in Colombia so this didn’t apply to me which I am glad, but I still find it weird and pretty unfair. Especially considering not all foreigns come from locations where their currency is higher than pesos so it can be expensive. On the other hand, I did like that there were translation audios for those who spoke another language (not sure what languages they had). And this is more of my personal style, but I also wasn’t a fan of having a tour person for the first half of our visit, we had a big group and it took a long time. I typically like to visit locations peacefully and to learn about it, I rather read from posters or maybe an audio. This might not apply to many but I still wanted to point that out. Even so I still loved the experience and would visit again in the future since it’s something very special and different from many tourist destinations. If this is your first time traveling to Colombian this is definitely a must go place.

A marvel of the world. The stations of the cross presentation were wonderful as well as the church itself. A bit more could be done to preserve a more prayerful atmosphere, but overall a good experience.

Hands down one of the most remarkable and unique things to do in Colombia. Absolutely stunning. Be aware that the last ticket is sold around 5:45pm, and the cathedral closes around 7pm. Highly recommend the free included tour guide.

Beautiful must see attraction. The tour was pretty informative and they even offer you an English audio device if you can’t speak Spanish. I also met some wonderful people that were traveling from other countries. It’s a sight to see.

Magical place. So many things to see and discover, it's really a wonder. Apart from the medical benefits of staying inside and breathing the salty air that does wonders for the body. 100% recommended.

Don’t make the mistake that I did, and make sure you get your ticket first, before standing in the line to get into the cathedral. If you come to the Cathedral, on the bus, you can’t miss the tickets stand. However, if you walked up to the Cathedral like I did, the ticket stand is easier to miss. It’s actually a short walk (20minutes) up to the Cathedral from the train stop. Steep, but nice. The staff was incredibly helpful and let me skip the line to enter the cathedral the second time around, since I had to go back and buy a ticket. They also provided me with an audible tour in English, since all the “live” tours were in Spanish.

It was incredible place. It’s really worth to visit if you go to Bogota. I’m sure you will be surprised more than your expectation. We were impressed seeing such huge and beautiful architectures. We went there by guide tour from Bogota. It seems difficult to go by oneself, so it’s better to join the guide with large, small group or private.

A wonderful place to visit and appreciate how what was once a salt mine was turned into a sacred work of art. You don’t have to be catholic to enjoy the various works of art and it’s a wonder how they were able to engineer this attraction. I don’t know if they offer any tours in English so be mindful that you may not get the full experience unless you are able to speak Spanish. I would definitely go again.

Must do! You have to take the trip and see this place. It's stunning, even if you are not religious or follow a different religion to see this mine and learn the history of the people and the area is interesting. This place is mind-blowing and for the price worth it.

Tours are available. Multiple languages are available. We had brought the premium ticket which gives you access to mine for salt, see other exhibits, and explore additional museums. It was preserved well and we had been able to spend over three hours here and still had not seen everything. The cathedral is beautiful after hearing how it was built. Active mining was also going on and it looks as if they are adding more! City tours are also available with the premium ticket price.
