Parken kann man im Parkhaus D5. Kombitickets für mehrere Häuser, wie anderswo üblich, gibt es hier nicht. Stattdessen ein (offenbar sehr komplexes) Rabattierungssystem. Im Zeughaus erwarten Besuchende Dauerausstellungen zur Antike, Theater- und Stadtgeschichte Mannheims, sowie Sakralkunst. Ergänzt wird das Programm durch Sonderausstellungen. Ich sehe "Kinderträume: Spielen - Lernen - Leben um 1900". Dabei handelt es sich um eine Sammlung von Puppenstuben und Kaufläden. Die Präsentation ist so, wie man im letzten Jahrhundert Museum machte: Neben den Exponaten befinden sich Textwüsten im Blocksatz. Besonders in den Dauerausstellungen wirkt alles zusammengewürfelt, der thematische Zusammenhang ist oftmals lediglich am Farbcode des Ausstellungsraums erkennbar. Zeug im Zeughaus. Ergänzende Angebote, wie beispielsweise ein Audioguide, sind im Zeughaus unbekannt. Fazit: Aus der Zeit gefallenes Museumsangebot, dass weit unter seinen Möglichkeiten bleibt. Ich war heute in der Normannen-Ausstellung. Diese Ausstellung war sehr beeindruckend und hat mich tief bewegt. Die Kuratoren haben sich viel Mühe gegeben und man hat Exponate gesehen, die sich sonst nur von Bildern kenne. Auch die Beschriftung und die Multimedia-Filme waren phantastisch. Es g hat einstweilen gedauert, ehe man alles verarbeitet hat. Eine der besten Ausstellungen, Die ich besucht habe.

Sehr schöne Ausstellungen ... sehr ruhig an einem Sonntag morgen; beim nächsten Mannheimbesuch sind die Weltkulturen gegenüber dran!

Die Beschilderung im Haus selbst ist sehr sparsam und missverständlich: So gab es wohl eine Wegweisung in Form von Pfeilen auf dem Boden, die ich aber nur einmal wahrnahm, so irrte man etwas ziellos wie in einem Labyrinth umher - Ach, das habe ich auch noch nicht gesehen! -, und am vermeintlichen Ende, wo auch das Gästebuch ausliegt, steht man nach Verlassen des Ausstellungsraums als Fußlahme ziemlich hilflos im Treppenhaus, weil die groß mit "Ausgang/ Exit" bezeichnete Tür, wie sich hinterher herausstellte, nur ein "Notausgang" sein soll und der Aufzug sich dummerweise nur am entgegengesetzten Ende des Gebäudes beim Eingang und dem anderen Treppenhaus befindet!

TL;DR version: An older Russian museum docent here cornered me (an American) and my husband (not an American) into multiple conversations about how awesome he thinks Putin is, then got mad when he found out we don’t think Putin is awesome, and yelled xenophobic threats at me as we were trying to leave. This happened several weeks ago, so this guy might not even be working there anymore. It’s a long story, but I’ll try to keep it brief. Husband and I went through the whole museum, and got the the Egyptian section. There was an older man at the door who was checking tickets, so we showed him ours, and he asked where we were from, mentioning that he is from Russia. We told him, and when he found out I’m from the US, he immediately launched into this a diatribe about how awesome Putin is, how the US creates false propaganda against Putin, etc. He also stated that the US was responsible for starting >every< modern war, (?) and insisted to know if my husband, who is not a US citizen, liked Putin. My husband politely said no, which made this guy further argue that everything negative about Putin is just propaganda from the US, etc. We finally broke away, somehow, after several minutes of this, and wandered the exhibit. (Which was interesting, and they have translations of the descriptive plaques in German and English, btw.) When we got ready to leave, he cornered us AGAIN, and it was several minutes more of how awesome Putin is, how wrong we were, and asking us if we supported Trump (we don’t, but he didn’t care/didn’t believe us), and he pointed at my face at one point and asked, “Why do you think America only has bad presidents? Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton...?” Again, this goes on for several minutes, and since this guy is clearly crazy and has a particular thing against the US, I let my husband handle it. Finally, the guy got frustrated, and walked out the same exit we had to go out. We waited a minute, then walked out too. This is where it got scary. He was outside on the landing, and we began to go down the stairs. He saw us and called out, “Hail Trump! Right?” My husband responded, “No, not ‘hail Trump.’ We don’t support him.” “Hail Trump! Hail Trump! Right?” We’re halfway down the first set of stairs. We hadn’t done anything to draw attention to ourselves, I myself barely spoke during all of these crazy interactions this guy initiated, but he’s clearly so unhinged he’s willing to shout xenophobic threats to a customer in the stairwell of the main lobby, where anyone could have heard him. Unfortunately, when we complained, the gentleman we told was very nice, but seemed to have a limited understanding of English, so I don’t know if anything happened afterward. So if you get cornered by an older Russian worker who starts talking about Putin, disengage/shut down the convo quickly and get the manager, (the manager actually speaks English fairly well, but she wasn’t around when we went to complain) and just know this guy hates Americans in particular.

Wir waren dort mit einer Reisegruppe, um eine Ausstellung über die Normannen mit einer professionellen Führung zu besichtigen. Die Ausstellung war sehr instruktiv, viele interessante Ausstellungsstücke, gut präsentiert und beschrieben. An mehreren Stellen gab es Videos auf Grossbildschirmen in Endlosschleife über die Geschichte der Normannen. Ein sehr empfehlenswertes Museum. Wenn man es besuchen will, sollte man vorher die Öffnungszeiten anschauen. Es öffnet sehr spät am Vormittag. Die eintrittskarte gilt für einen ganzen Tag, man kann also zwischendurch das Museum verlassen und später wiederkommen.

Every couple of years I come and visit Mannheim, each time I stop at the Reiss Museum. So far I have been fortunate that one of their displays always caught my interest and I spend hours enjoying history. Am Ende hat uns die Diskussion darüber, ob uns die ausgedruckten Tickets jetzt mal eben "über die Seite" in "echte" umgetauscht werden, fast so lange aufgehalten hat, wie es gedauert hätte, sich regulär anzustellen. Das Zweite war, dass in der ganzen Ausstellung an jeder Ecke auf U(h)rkunden hingewiesen wird, die man sich am Ende mit eigenen Fotos ausdrucken kann. Und wir haben wirklich Energie hineingesteckt, schöne Fotos zu bekommen und uns sehr auf dieses Souvenir gefreut... und dann mussten wir erfahren, dass der Drucker leider defekt ist! Das kann natürlich auch mal passieren. Aber dass wir auf die Frage, ob wir am Dienstag (also am nächsten Öffnungstag) nochmal wiederkommen und die Fotos, die doch sicherlich gespeichert waren, dann ausdrucken können, die Antwort bekamen, bis dahin sei der Drucker abgebaut, war mehr als enttäuschend und unprofessionell! Es kann uns niemand erzählen, dass die komplette Ausstellung in einem Tag abgebaut wird, und so hätte man den Besuchern doch wenigstens die Möglichkeit geben können, doch noch an die U(h)rkunden zu kommen! Da ist noch viel Luft nach oben im Service! Nichtsdestotrotz werden wir auch der nächsten familienkompatiblen Ausstellung natürlich wieder eine Chance geben (und dann die Tickets gleich vor Ort besorgen).
