Really cool castle! The views of the city are incredible. The walk up is pretty steep so be prepared if you are going that way. Don’t miss the pharmacy museum and the giant wine barrel. The inner part of the castle costs 9 euros but it’s worth it. Also check out the garden in the back for even more great views.

A beautiful, amazing site that has tremendous views! Over looking the entire old town, this castle is a must stop if In Heidelberg! I highly recommend going there during sunset because it’s magical to watch the city and castle grounds light up at night!

This castle is located atop a hill with beautiful views of Heidelberg. There are several displays inside showing what early pharmaceutical equipment was like. You can walk to the top of the biggest wine barrel you will ever see. There is a large open area where you can sit in the shade and enjoy the views. Food is available at a couple of different places on the castle grounds. The castle is accessible by foot (a little bit of a climb) or by train (tickets are available for purchase). You could easily spend a couple hours here.

One of the best “ruins castles” in Germany. We really enjoyed the tour through the castle. The views of Heidelberg from the castle are fantastic as well. It is a bit of a hike to get up to the castle. I would recommend taking the tram if you have issues with climbing stairs and hills or have strollers or older folks with you. The climb is pretty significant. I have now been to this castle several times and I’d go back again and again. Such a great place with such an interesting history.

Amazing views and wonderful medieval architecture awaits you at this place. Lots of steep pathways and beautiful gardens everywhere. The palace has a rich history and it does not disappoint. Would highly recommend packing a picnic with you and having it in the gardens of the palace.

Definitely worth the trip. I took the funicular railway from station Kornmarkt, they offer different tickets, 1 to the castle, single or return, another 1 to the top. I bought the whole trip to the top, cost 14 euro. Price include entry to Heidelberg Palace. U can go all the way to the top then to the palace or stop at palace then continue to the top. I went to the top first, it was very foggy due to rain, fully covered with fog, mist. I just walk around a bit to enjoy the nature n cold. Then I went to the castle, was raining... but it has a much better view at the castle. It is so beautiful, although ruined but still majestic. There are 2 museums, pharmacy and the brewery..is free, just go in to get some shelter...but the wine barrel is so huge and the wood used to construct the barrel is so solid. I would highly recommend a trip to Heidelberg Palace/ castle

Beautiful, highly recommend for a lazy stroll. The views of the palace and the city from the terrace is breathtaking. We went on a rainy day and still managed to have a great time. There’s a short hike, moderately steep but absolutely doable. Wear comfy shoes. I saw some cars up there too, so I guess it’s possible.

Such a nice place! Both the castle and the gardens are worth a visit. You can access the gardens for free but will have to pay to enter the courtyard. Adult ticket is 9€ (August 23), which also includes access to the funicular going up and down. You'll need to pay an extra 6€ if you want to actually enter the castle which is only available through guided tours.

You can reach at this place only by walking only. Either you can use stairs or just walk through. Make sure that you don't have luggage with you, otherwise it could be difficult to reach at the castle. You can have a great view of Heidelberg from the top. If you want to visit inside the castle then you have to pay the fees. There is washroom available. I think it's free.

Ticket is included in cable car ticket. If you dont like climbing up like me I suggest you take the cable car. There is a pharmacy museum inside. Inside and outside there are many places to enjoy the view and take photos. You can take a private tour of the castle as well. There is also the largest wine barrel, wine tasting, museum shop inside.

It’s a must visit while in Heidelberg. For €9 you get to take the cable car to the castle and tour the ground of the castle. For an additional €6, you can join a guided tour to go inside the castle and listen to interesting history of the castle and stories about prince elector and his British bride Elizabeth Steward. The whole castle is magnificent and massive. Because it’s high up, it provides a beautiful view over the old town, the old bridge and the river from the top. If taking the tour, it will take at least three hours to visit the castle.

If you like explore castles, this will be educational and fun. Starting with a hike up the castle is highly recommended! It made me appreciate so much modern amenities - there is a cable car you can purchase to go up and down as well (€9 will get a person up and down the hill for the castle). The grounds outside the castle is fun to walk around simply for the view it offers of the town. Once up at the castle level, get ticket to the courtyard. It can be included in the cable car. It will take maybe an hour or hour and half but seeing the massive wine barrel - it will be the biggest ever! and learning about the start of medicine/ pharmacy in Germany will be a fun experience in the museum inside. Wander around to the front of the castle the view is great not just the old town below but also the castle structure itself. Happy travels

Nice view on the city, but nothing was working when we arrived. We paid 9 Euro just to walk around, not possible to enter the castle. A bit disappointed. And be prepared for the tough walk through the stairs up :)

It’s an amazing castle, I will tell any one about my visit there, the view from castle above the city is beautiful. If you would visit it, try to go before 5:30 pm, because the bus from down to castle through the mountain will close and last trip to enter it will on 5:30. It costs 14€ or 9€ for adults to buy a ticket. Garden around the castle is also nice. Enjoy 😊 (The stairs are long if you want to walk up, you can go up walking but maybe will be difficult for some people)

A wonderful castle built about 800 years ago... It was tried to be destroyed and damaged by the French in the 17th century. Definitely a place worth visiting with its unique scenery and magical history.

Wow what a great place to visit we walk into the same palace that kings and queens walked in back in 1775 . With a tour guide filling us in on all the history of the palace and who was living there and who visited . And the cog tram we had to take to get to the palace it all was amazing to see . We arrived about 9 am and it was not crowded at all no wait for tickets or tram . Upon leaving about 12 o’clock the place was crowded and there was a line for the tram so I suggest you get there early and you should be ok .

I can't find words to explain this place. Perhaps the most impressive castle in Europe! I wish all the interior parts were open to the public. The world's largest wine barrel is also located here.

Beautiful castle ruins. One of the best I have ever visited. Lots of walking to see the best views, wear good shoes (trainers) and bring plenty of water. I visited in 2002 while travelling though Europe and this was one of the highlights for me. The local town was absolutely stunning and full of life. Of course the beer was excellent.

Had a great day at the palace. We bought tickets to go inside the palace. Audio tour are an additional cost, which we had not realized. The audio tour, however, was very educational and gave meaning to what we were looking at. Stunning architecture and views. It's a great place to stop for a couple of hours!

Amazing place, I could spend days just wandering inside and outside the castle, is simply amazing. The views that has to offer are also out of this world! I bought the ticket for €14 that allowed me the funicular and museums and then at the castle bought the audio guide which is totally worth it tbh. They had it in different languages. There’s also a Michelin 2020 restaurant inside the castle.

Great and beautiful castle (or ruins of the original castle). Be sure to do the 1 hour guided tour to see the palace interior and hear the enthralling story of the rulers of the land through the ages.

Just an amazing, huge, powerful (even though ruined) Medieval castle overlooking the town. Entrance to the territory is free (I recommend taking a walk using rather steep stairs to get there instead of taking the cable-car, the latter were crowded and first time was a big time waster for me), but to get to the castle's courtyard and a few small exhibitions there (Medieval pharmacy and some temporary one in a very interesting itself inner rooms) you are going to need a ticket (9 euro if I'm not mistaken). Amazing ruins of the castle's walls and towers, cellars and casemates. Nice infographics, all interesting spots have info tables incl. in English. There is a café, a restaurant (in the castle itself!), a few souvenir shops and a nice info center. Definitely worth a dedicated visit (especially for history lovers) preferably for a couple hours - and do it when it is not too dark outside, as mostly it's an open air museum.

Beautiful location, view is peaceful and idylic. Cafe up top with plenty of drink options and ice cream. Parking up top near palace to reduce walking as well as a gondala. Walk through the town is highly recommended as well, lots of cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Beautiful churches and walks along the river are pleasant as well. Near by parking garages are reasomably priced. Highly recommended visit!

I found the Heidelberg Castle ruins to be an impressive and fun place to visit. Carvings and statues along some walls can still be seen. The view of the town and river from the top of the castle is stunning. There is also an interesting Apothecary museum you can browse through. I was amused with the big barrels in the barrel room and enjoyed walking up to the top of the big giant barrel. This castle is worth the time to visit.

I find this castle ruins romantic, specially when going there before sunset. Start by exploring the old bridge which offers lovely views to the city and the castle. Then walk around the old part of Heidelberg city. There are many restaurants offering different cuisines and amazing architecture. Then walk or drive to near the castle and spend the late afternoon there. There are benches to sit on.

Beautiful palace on the hill above Heidelberg. Great place for events and for tourist visits. Classic German castle experience. Pharmacy museum inside, plus the biggest wooden cask barrel in the world! Not to be missed if you come to Heidelberg. Use the interesting Bergbahn hillside train for the most fun getting up to the castle.

Heidelberg Castle is a true gem nestled in the heart of this historic city, and my recent visit left me utterly spellbound! The absolutely breathtaking view of Heidelberg city. The architecture, the history, and the sheer grandeur of Heidelberg Castle make it a must-visit destination. But the real magic happened when I reached one of the viewpoints overlooking the city. The panoramic view of Heidelberg spread out beneath me was nothing short of spectacular. I definitely recommend also taking a tour of the topmost part of the castle.

A gorgeous site! The grounds are beautiful. Not much interior access. You can rent small lockers for a 1 euro deposit. Little cafe has nice & affordable snack options. Really enjoyed the apothecary museum. Take the funicular!

  • 5/5 Oleksandra S. 7 months ago on Google
Very nice old palace, you should definitely walk around and visit the garden. All the surrounding are accessible for free. But the entrance to the courtyard costs 9 euros. It’s unreasonably expensive, on my opinion. The size of the yard and what you can see inside is not worth the money. The yard is really small and partially closed for restoration, some cars are parked in places, there are too many people... In addition, to get inside the castle you need to pay even more and book a tour. So I was very disappointed. But again, the castle itself is spectacular and worth to visit, just consider thoroughly whether you need to go in. As an advantage, free toilet next to the cash register😉

  • 5/5 Hector F. 8 months ago on Google
Beautiful palace situated up above the town with gorgeous scenery from its balconies and garden terrace. Impressive facades throughout the palace. Must do the guided tour to see its real beauty and learn about its historical misfortunes, the chapel at the end tour is exquisite.

A place that transports visitors to the heart of Germany’s rich past. Even if it’s not how it was anymore, the architecture and expansive grounds offers a glimpse into centuries of history and still leaves you in awe to this day. The view that you get from here is just amazing. This is a must visit place when passing through Heidelberg. I did not get to go into the Pharmacy museum and look at the Wine barrel but I would recommend people to visit those places as I have heard a lot of good things about the places. Overall… it was still an amazing experience.

A truly amazing infrastructure with a breathtaking view of the city of Heidelberg. It was well worth it coming here. I took the stairs going up which I wouldn’t advise if you’re not doing much cardio like me. Better to use the other path or the cable car.

Even though we didn't enter the actual castle, a simple wander around the gardens and surrounding area will reveal to you the beauty and history of this magic place. As a bonus, you get a spectacular view over the historical town of Heidelberg. Also, we came across some interesting species of insects in the little ponds in the garden.

  • 5/5 Billy June N. 3 months ago on Google New
The place was 1 -2 hours away from the city centre, but the drive was okay and worth it. The wine cellars are a must-see. The guide explained the buildings and architectural influences behind it.

  • 5/5 Marilea G. 4 months ago on Google
We arrived a little later in the day. The place is very impressive and the view to see the town of Heidelberg is awesome from the palace. I don’t think the funicular ride was worth it since you can only go part way up without buying another ticket. We loved the palace.

  • 5/5 Blake I. 5 months ago on Google
Do you like fascinating history and great views? If not, skip this place because it has all of it. The palace is a 24 minute beautiful walk up the hill (100+ stairs) from the center of Altstadt, but it’s worth it as the palace and view are fantastic. You’ll need to buy tickets to enter the palace itself, but you can tour the grounds and check out the panoramic view of the Altstadt section of Heidelberg for free.

  • 5/5 An K. 5 months ago on Google
Beautiful sightseeing with good long walks to explore the history. Parking will be an issue though. The surface of the palace is a bit rocky and it would be tricky to manoeuvre the push chair.

The palace is magnificent. You can get a very good view of the whole city from the palace. The world's largest wine barrel sits in the cellar of the castle and it was enormous. The ticket for the funicular ride to castle also includes the courtyard where u can visit the pharmacy museum and the largest wine barrel.

  • 5/5 Susan M. 7 months ago on Google
This is an amazing ruin of an ancient historic sight. If you can arrange to go with a guide it is well worth it to get the history of the Castle. The views of the city of Heidelberg from the back of the Castle are fabulous. You are walking on cobblestones and uneven surfaces so wear comfortable shoes and consider a cane or walking stick if you have trouble walking on some surfaces.

It's absolutely beautiful and incredibly interesting. Definitely worth the trip there if you are thinking about it. The town below is especially gorgeous too, especially at the bridge. Enjoyed the exquisite apple strudel at the restaurant within the castle, and such lovely, friendly service from everyone there just made the trip all the more enjoyable.

It's hard to describe the awe of this castle/palace. It's beautiful, iconic, historical with the most beautiful picturesque view of the city of Heidelberg and the gorgeous Neckar River. I was here just a few short weeks ago on August 16, 2021 traveling Europe from the US. The castle staff at the tram up asked for our passport, vaccination card and had us sign a very short health declaration before traveling to the top where we were again asked for the same documents. It was easy and fast entrance. NOT complicated at all so don't let that deter you. We started in the apothecary museum (pharmacy) and then onto the largest wine barrel you've ever seen I'm sure. We then proceeded along and around the outside path of amazing views and a close exterior look at the castle itself and it's intricate and unbelievable design and architecture. The history and story of this palace and city below is definitely worth the visit.

  • 5/5 Vanesa V. 2 years ago on Google
Such a great place! The tickets cover the castle, the pharmacy museum, the big barrel plus the first stop of the lift so make sure not to miss on anything. There quite some stairs leading to the castle. An alternative could be the lift which takes you from the city center to the entrance of the castle in a couple of minutes only.

  • 5/5 Jess S. 2 years ago on Google
Lots of places to walk without having to pay to go into the courtyard. Nice and quiet on a fall morning, the fog rolling in made it look even nicer. If you want to go into the courtyard, you have to go to the information area and fill out a form with your info on it and show the guards your vaccine paper, or your negative covid test.

  • 5/5 panagiotis d. 2 years ago on Google
What makes the palace unique is its incredible view. There is also the largest barrel of wine in the world at that time as well as the statue of the awesome Italian guardian "PERKEO" which is the mascot of the city. For the ascent from the city, we use the electric train which, although it is very expensive (€ 9.00), offers great interest.

Very interesting visit.. Loved the Apotheke museum & the massive wine barrel "Tun", was mind blowing. We went up using the railway with the entry price included. Seemed to be the same entry price if you walked up. COVID requirements were a bit confusing.

The cable ride itself getting to the palace was an experience. We went to the very top overlooking the entire area and could see for miles. The we proceeded to the castle ruins. It’s one of the youngest castles in Germany built around 1620’s. Obviously it’s huge and the walk around the grounds is well worth it also. We saw some Egyptian geese meandering about, which was really neat. I had to look them up as I never have seen anything so striking.

What an excellent place to visit. We had a Viking excursion tour. Was really fun seeing the castle and walking the town. Walk back in history to see just how beautiful the castle and the town is. Great attraction. There is a train to the top, I learned this after walking up the dang hill. Wonderful views of the city. The architecture and decor are awesome.. Some really great views of the city and the area below. A lot of good walking. There's plenty to see. However, I was disappointed that I was displaced from the ticket shop for not having the right mask on. Apparently the n95 mask that I had on did not suffice. I'm sure this will change in time.

A city like living in a fairy tale! Bridges, alleys, castles and inside the castle a museum with a history of medicines. You can see the castle without paying a ticket only outside and walking uphill for about 15 minutes. But if you want to visit the inside of the castle to see the pharmacy museum and the barrel, you can pay a ticket of 9 € to take the cable car and take you out of the castle. The employees at the tickets are not polite and force you to buy a mask from the place there KN95. Most employees wore a simple mask. I think they just wanted to sell the masks they have left. Also in the same place next to the castle you can see the arch of Elizabeth And amazing view of the town!

Great location, lots of history, and a cheap ticket to go everywhere. On a sunny day you may get lost from morning to evening. Definitely coming again, for a guided tour and the funicular!

The walk up the many hundred if not thousand steps to the top was a good cardio work out. The castle or palace ruins were incredible from all angles. We managed to see a lot of them without paying. There are many paths and lookout points around the site. The garden or lawn space is vast. The views of Heidelberg, the river and old town were really amazing. A worthwhile trip into the city. It was also super easy to leave the city. The roads were fantastic.

Beautiful castle ruins! From its walls, you can admire the beautiful panorama of the city and drink wine from a huge barrel. The ticket cost is O.K. You can find around the castle a few parking lots. Before you choose one I encourage you to check the prices first. I chose one located in the old town near castle hill. Getting to the top was not too demanding

If you want to see a 15th century castle then this is the place. They have guided tours which take you inside the castle to different things to see and if you wish to see just the courtyard then there is another ticket for that. They have plenty to see and food to buy as well as a missive 220,000 liter wine barrel. This place is massive and just a cool all around place. You can take the lift into the city or up to see other sites. The views are amazing and it’s a good little 3 hour visit. The castle overlooks the river and has just amazing views.

Beautiful! A must see for your trip to southern Germany. The gardens are fresh, the courtyard is so well preserved, you can get a real sense for the history of the place. It’s also family friendly and pet friendly. Whether you’re just looking for a place to stroll around or you’re a hardcore history buff—this place has something for you.

I really enjoyed this palace. The entire area is large with so much outdoor space. In hindsight I should’ve visited in the morning and spent the entire day here vs arriving after brunch. What took up the most time was waiting in line to go up and down the upper funicular line. The pharmaceutical museum inside the castle is worth a visit.

Beautiful castle. One of the most complete one I've seen so far but the location on the river is phenomenal. The garden just wow. The history and the story behind it just good. I didn't post pics of the castle because I'm in it.
