The castle is really beautiful! It’s peaceful and green. Loved the atmosphere. However we were very disappointed by the restaurant’s staff. If you’re foreigner and understand German even a little bit, get ready to hear some things you don’t want to hear…

I went for Halloween and that was a mistake. Starting out with the buses, they packed people on them like sardines. However, I was willing to overlook that. Unfortunately, the experience just got worse from there. The website doesn't mention that you need to check your purse in before going in. Which requires you to pay an additional euro just to have your purse checked. This caused a longer wait time to get into the actual event because people were not prepared to check their bags. After getting in, we quickly found out that you couldn't enjoy yourself because you were having to navigate through the crowd. You could see the actors scaring people, so it wasn't much of a surprise. When someone did get scared, they would try to run away only to be running into other people in the crowd. The shows were okay but what really bothered me about them is the fact that security did not promote safe crowd control practices by shutting off the area when it reached maximum capacity. They allowed hundreds of people to gather in a small area to watch the first show while the actors encouraged people to move closer when there wasn't enough room in the crowd to begin with. I'm honestly surprised that no one was trampled over. I could not enjoy the show because I was worried about my safety. After walking through most of the castle, we found a show guide, which wasn't very helpful because the crowd had gotten bigger and there was no way to go back to the other stage. Would it have been too difficult to put this guide in the front before going through everything? The toilets ran out of toilet paper and were not clean. For the amount we paid for tickets, they could have at least had decent toilet accommodations. I wasn't able to get back into the castle ruins to see the fireworks because of the overcrowding. When it was time to leave, it was pure madness. Having to get my purse took longer than it needed to and an emergency pursued requiring an ambulance for one of the attendees. There were so many people trying to walk down the hill that the ambulance had trouble getting to the castle. The trip back to the car required being packed into the bus again. I'm not sure how this event was legally allowed to have this many people in a small area, much less allow people to pack on a bus the way they did. The planners of this event put the lives of the attendees, emergency personnel, and their employees in jeopardy. If a mass panic were to ensue, someone could have been seriously injured or killed. The actors didn't scare me but the complete disregard of everyone's safety by the event planners is the real horror in all of this.

Closed!!!!!! Nothing on the internet says it’s closed. Checked its website, the onsite restaurant’s website, and Google. A lady that seemed to work there informed us it was closed for renovations with no reopen date. We were able to walk around the entire outside of the castle on trails that circle the grounds. There were also lots of other trails but we had kids so we didn’t do too much hiking. There is also a cute herb garden by the restaurant we were able to walk through on our way around the outside of the castle.

Spectacular views from the top of the castle ruins. I went in January so I didn’t get any of the Frankenstein vibes like I got when I visited the Frankenstein castle in Frankenstein, Germany. I hear this place is a blast during Halloween though so definitely check it out!

Good to hike, you can drive down there easily too! Lots of parking. The ruins of the castle and the views from the top are superb. You can even see the Frankfurt skyline.

A lot of places are dependent on atmosphere. Sometimes it's the location and sometimes the people. Our waitress was great. Humour, multilingual, and could explain the menu. The location also plays an impact because you are in a historical Castle. The food menu seemed small, but the portions were decent in size and taste. Save space for the desserts. Good fun.

To many people. No room to move anywhere. It's not worth the money you better off going to a theme park. You cannot enjoy anything.

Very impressive castle in the top of a cliff with free access-at least early in the morning- and amazing view in the fields! Also the road is good enough!

Appears to be the true castle that inspired Mary Shelley's Frankenstein story. Easy access from convenient parking lot, few minutes below, cheap, voluntary contribution, kiosk and restaurant on top. Plus, you can access remaining wall and the tower of last defense, where you can enjoy beautiful view of Rhein River valley and further the famous wine region. Definitely worth to take a swing.

Perfect place to travel with family and friends, If you go by car don't need to walk so much however, by foot from tram station at least 30/40 min walk depends on your walking speed. Good for hiking and mountain biking.

Great and simple to complete hike with a good and interesting castle that at least currently is free to visit if you enter before opening time. Good place with some sweet views. I am removing a star because right now one of the walls is being completely renovated and repaired so there might be machinary in your pictures.

A great castle to see, nestled at the highest point of the mountain, the castle also offers a stunning view of the German countryside. After the castle tour, stop in at the refreshment shop, the Radlers there are great!

Enjoyed the restaurant! The staff was so friendly, and they have Frankenstein-themed cocktails. It's a bit of a fancier restaurant than we expected for the top of the castle, but we enjoyed it very much.

Based on the story of Frankenstein I had high expectations when visiting this castle however I left there feeling a bit disappointed. if you in the vicinity then a visit is ok however I don't recommend spending valuable time and energies to add this destination to the bucket list. There is a great restaurant adjacent to the Castle though.

We came on a July weekday afternoon with our three kids ages 5,3, and 1.5 years. The parking lot was easily found and the path to the castle was marked, only a 5 minute walk at toddler pace down some steps and then up a paved road to the castle entrance. I’m sure a stroller would have been fine if we had walked only on the road, but wouldn’t have worked once inside the castle. Once there, you walk into a courtyard that has a gift shop, restaurant, bathrooms, chapel you can visit, and the entrance to the actual castle on the right with a donation box for coins. You walk through a gate underneath a tower visitors don’t have access to climb. There isn’t actually much to explore aside from a small amount of ruin rooms and a different enclosed tower with nice views. On top of that, there was a stage set up and wires and lighting EVERYWHERE, as well as litter and equipment and lots of other tripping hazards, unsightly views for photos, and blocked off areas. The whole thing took us about an hour, and we left feeling kind of disappointed. I think his castle is better suited for events than for exploring, but I bet it is amazing for concerts and Halloween events. The man at the gift shop didn’t speak English but was very nice. The restaurant has a huge amount of seating and a better ambiance than the ruin itself, though we didn’t eat there. I’m glad we went but I’m not sure I’d recommend it unless going specifically to eat at the restaurant or for an event.

What a delicious lunch with superb service! We ordered pork medallions in mushroom sauce and a salad, salmon special with spinach noodles and arugula, and the stuffed beef special with onion gravy, red cabbage, and potato dumplings. The coffee was brewed fresh and the white wine called "Dr. F" is partly dry with a smooth taste. The views from the window seat were nice even with the mist and overcast weather. Burg Frankenstein is a fantastic destination restaurant. Thanks!

More for venues than local historical castle. This is said to be the castle that the Frankenstein Novel was based on, and how this Castle is advertised. Research says that it "may have been" but no evidence to verify the truth. The castle itself, really not much to see, a wall and a tower. Part of this is new as you can tell from the rocks and mortar. I was really disappointed here. As this place is privately owned and set up for hosting venues. A stage was set up within the castle area when we visited with barriers and wiring all over. There are so many other better castles and ruins to see that offer more for historical value in Germany. Signs describing the castle are in German only (Standard for Germany. Other countries - France, Belgium, Czech, Croatia, Netherlands to name a few, offer signs in multiple languages for tourists that visit).

The castle looks abandoned. All the lighting etc for their shows it strewn about the property with no regard for the history of the place. Very disappointing. Graffitti is all over the inside of the tower, along with empty beer bottles.

Very dissapointed. It's super small, nothing is really maintained, there only the tower that you can visit with a nice view. But the rest is forgetable. In 10 min you're done. Hard pass, the only good thing is that it's free to visit.

This castle owes its fame to the fact that it has been portrayed as the namesake for the book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley for several years, but sees no connection to it and The described localities are questioned, and no castle is mentioned in the novel. Nevertheless, it is quite a spectacular castle with great views and interesting history...

Went here for Halloween. They have this function every year for 2 weeks. The whole ruin is decorted for Halloween, and turned into a huge outdoor haunted house. This is my second time coming, and it gets bigger every year. This is definitely a must for Halloween fans. You can purchase tickets online, and it is worth the extra 6 euro for the fast lane. This gets you to the front of the bus line, and the front of the security line. Be prepared, as the actors can “touch” you unlike in the states. You will possibly be grabbed and put in a cage or box. It is great for older kids, but they do a “light” version on Sundays for the younger kids. This was started by US military members back in the 70’s, but has grown into a huge thing. If you want to come on Halloween day, I suggest you purchase tickets well in advance, as it sells out quickly. Food and drinks are also available for a very reasonable price. If you want to spend the extra, you can get VIP which gets you a Buffett, and saved table for the night. If you plan on coming, be aware that you have to park in town, and take a 15 minute bus ride to the castle.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful castle ruins located in the Mühltal, south-east of the Darmstadt-Eberstadt district. There are several forest trails that you can hike up to the castle, but the serpentine climb up the road is also popular with cyclists. There is also a nice restaurant at the top of the castle, from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Rhine plain. The prices are rather high, and it is advisable to inquire about the opening times and to reserve a table so that you do not have an unpleasant surprise and find yourself in front of closed doors or all seats are occupied. However, there is also a small kiosk for strengthening and refreshing. Admission to the castle ruins is free, and there are often themed exhibitions (just find out beforehand on the Internet). The Halloween festival is also very popular, attracting huge crowds of spectators and participants year after year. In any case, from the highest (residential) tower you have a wonderful view of the Rhine plain (if the visibility is good you can even spot the Rhine) and the surrounding Bergstrasse and adjacent area. Frankenstein Castle is also very popular with families, and children in particular can let off steam there and experience adventures from a bygone era up close. However, the name of the castle has very little to do with the monster of the same name from the novel by Mary Shelly. There are enough articles and research on the internet for this. Personally, I can definitely recommend a visit to the ruins of Burg Frankenstein. But tastes are known to be very different.

Nice place for a short day trip from Darmstadt. This place is located 15km south east of Darmstadt city center. It is easily accessible by car. However one can even cycle or hike and reach the castle. The path is steep though. The castle is located on a hill and offers good views of the surrounding areas. There is a restaurant and a kiosk too.

It’s a beautiful castle! We went last week to there. I can’t wait to go back the next year, but please, take care to check if no one is still in the castle before close! We try to go outside at 20:00 and the doors was closed, we tried to call and no one answer.😩😩 luckily people outside the castle help us to find a way to get out. It would be nice to have an advice that it’s going to close, like a Bell or something similar 🥲 however, the castle it’s beautiful and very well cared..

It is interesting, a cute little castle but nothing super incredible. Might be a good event location. It looked they had a stage built for theater pieces or music evenings - this would be a cool experience. I wish it had some point where the history was written. It does not cost anything specifically to enter but there is a box in which you can donate something (they recommend 1 € per person).

Fun castle ruins to visit. Cute bier Garten and a nice restaurant (although we only ate at the Bier Garten and the bretzels were GOOD!!)

Me and my daughter are vegans and yesterday after a long day we were served there a delicious, comforting vegan dinner. The waitors were very friendly. The view from the terrace beautiful and green. Totally worth visiting.

Interesting historical place, however I felt like someone had no idea what to to with this place. A few parts were closed just because, fence parts were lying anywhere for quite a long time I guess, because the plants have already grown in inbetween. Restaurant was closed when I was there and the small shop didn't offer anything interesting to eat. All in all, good potential but needs some work. The wandering paths around are nice however.

Finding this castle was a nice surprise on our Germany road trip! The castle was closed for renovations, but the restaurant here is amazing and not expensive for the amount of tasty food you get. I recommend a visit and a meal here!

This is a wonderful place to visit and explore, and historically significant for Mary Shelley fans!

(Translated by Google) In summer, the Frankenstein culture festival is held in the castle, with great performances. There are also delicious snacks, drinks and all from the very friendly service staff. At the cocktail bar, I like the drink J.F. found. Very tasty. First, I love a castle so it’s hard to disappoint me. This castle has a lot of legend and myth around it which makes seeing it very cool. They also appear to host a lot of events, I’d love to visit again when an event is going on.

The castle was smaller than I anticipated. There isn't very much to explore with the castle itself, but there is a restaurant and snack bar nearby with some great views of the area.

One of the best natural spots of Darmstadt. Great view from here. You can enjoy some snacks and bier with a great view. Also a good hiking area.

A neat place to visit but in my opinion it would be best left as it was. They are currently doing renovation on ruins that should remain as is.

Nicely preserved castle, with a unique story. The fantasy of course, creates too many expectations for this place, that they are not reflected at the end. The sourounded forest, worth's a walk

Not really worth going out of your way for. Not much to see and very little information. It is a bot of a mission to get to. Make sure you don't follow Google maps pin to castle, follow the directions to the carpark

This would've been a great day if they had actually been open like google had said. We drove 4 hrs just to see the castle closed sign.

👍👍 Was soll ich sagen.

Einfach top! Weiter so…!
