The Museum of Ancient Shipping is definitely worth a visit, even if you're on a budget, as the entry is free!! With a lot of love and heart, a lot about shipping in Roman antiquity is offered here! The short 10-15 minute pop up tours on a specific topic are also interesting!!

I have heard a lot of good things about it but unfortunately couldn't see anything because it's closed for renovation and will be opened later sometime in the year 2024.

Small museum about the construction of wooden ships and shipping in ancient times. It's worth a visit if you're in Mainz, as entry is free. Some of the old wreckage can be seen, but sofas are cordoned off and elevated. Taking photos (without flash allowed) is not possible without a tripod. Many replica models can be seen to get an impression of what the ships looked like.

A detour to the small but very impressive museum opposite the Cinestar cinema is definitely worth it. Admission is free. You get a very detailed impression of ancient shipping. The highlight are the two true-to-scale ancient ships. (School) children also get their money's worth.

ATTENTION: Museum will close from July 1, 2022 for approx. 1 YEAR Unfortunately only 5 stars possible - otherwise I would give it 6 or 7 without hesitation An impressive and accessible representation of ancient shipping from its beginnings to Roman times, which naturally forms the focus of the exhibition. The exhibition objects and explanatory displays are grouped in a circle around the 4 ancient Roman ships discovered in Mainz, which are shown to the public here, whereby faithful replicas as well as the actually recovered wrecks can be viewed. Entry is free. You can park in the cinema parking garage.

A very interesting exhibition that includes wooden models, ancient shipwrecks and much more. Lots of information about the objects found in Mainz as well as general information about shipbuilding and much more. What's more, entry is free, so the visit is definitely worth it! A must for anyone interested in history or shipbuilding!

A really interesting museum, entry is free! I was particularly pleasantly surprised that the supervisors also have competent knowledge and are open to questions. Particularly interesting is a replica of a Roman weapon that was common on ships.

Awesome artifacts to see. You can buy an English guidebook for 3 euro. Museum is free so more than worth it. Very informative.

Very nice museum and no charges at all. You can of course buy a souvenir or a book and make a donation if you want. Place has a lot of exhibits and also accessible for blind people and lots of interactive things for kids. If you have some time, definitely worth checking out. 👍

A quiet, relaxed museum, spacious and very spacious due to the design. The finds are explained in more detail with many interesting explanations and tips. You should take some time with you to be able to look at everything in peace.

Free, interesting and modern. There are a few original pieces of ancient roman ships, life-size and miniature models made from wood or 3D-printed and digital media ranging from VR (before COVID) to smartphone guides.

An entrance free, nice Museum with many antique Roman ship parts, they are being restored in here and they also build their own Roman style ships. You can find many interesting details inside this museum. Only thing it was upsetting was there were no English explanations.

It's a very nice focused museum. The collection is based on a handful of artifacts found in the ancient bed of the Rhine river and all the rest are very nice reconstructions

We were on a day trip to Mainz and spent a couple of hours and found it quite nice. Most of the exhibits are replicas. There's more content to read and consume than really experiences, however.

If you in mainz , don't miss this gem ! It located just right beside the cinestar. Entrance is free. Do try their shipwreck virtual reality. It's really fun and help you understand how the romans carry their wine or olive oil and stack them in the ships. The museum are highly accessible. It is very spacious and they also have braille on their exhibit label. Unfortunately, they have very limited english label on the display.

Cool museum about shipbuilding during Roman times, and the importance of the rivers in the area, especially the Rhine. The museum is free Thursday-Sunday. Most of the exhibits are in German only. They also have lots of activities for young kids.

Interesting little museum of finds of Roman galleys used on the Rhine. Two full size recreations give a good sense of what they would have looked like. Some of the descriptions are in English, which helped this non-German speaking tourist. Entry was free, so worth an hour of your time to look around.
