Nicely located by the beachside and walking distance to shopping area and restaurants should you wish to have a walk and dine outside the hotel. Security is located everywhere around the vicinity of the hotel so that's a good thing. Room was found to be clean, with fresh white linens and towels. Only fault is the window. It doesn't seem to shut properly and I can hear the wind and music from the bar downstairs. One feedback with music, I think the management should have it turned off once it passes 11pm as you have rooms located right above the poolside bar, which happens to be my room. Service and hospitality by staff is good but another feedback would be them asking for tips in everything they do. And asking for it is not customer service at all. Be genuine in the service industry and not do it just for tips. Maybe staff could be briefed on such issues so it doesn't create an uncomfortable and awkward situation with hotel guest?

This is an enormous hotel that is reasonably well run, but overpriced for what it is. Don't come here for a relaxing time. Come here because there aren't any other good options in Maputo. The pros: - Breakfast is excellent and pushed this review from a 3⭐ to a 4⭐. Variety and quality is fantastic. - Clean rooms, comfy beds, good air conditioning - Staff (particularly the waiters) work very hard and generally do a great job. - Gym with views of the sea with decent, working machines The cons: - Food on the terrace was terrible. The seafood basket was a soggy mess of chewy seafood 🤢 - Bathrooms are little tired and in need of a facelift. Or perhaps just our shower head needed a good clean! - Hotel couldn't cope with New Year traffic. Waiters couldn't keep up (despite working very, very hard). - The pool area is chaotic rather than peaceful. Great for families with young kids, not good for others. I would guess this only affects holiday season - Very few sun loungers. Seemed to be around 15 sun loungers for ~250 rooms.

The location of the hotel is good and it is a quality hotel. However the gym was not as well equipped as it should be. The staff were helpful and friendly but it felt more like they were angling for a tip rather than being genuinely helpful. Breakfast was really good and the pool was nice. We also stayed 2 nights at the Polana and had better value for money there.

The only thing I find could be improved was the edc machine for payment...... I paid my bill twice once the machines worked and next day when I went to pay the machines didn't work for the same card ... and the receptionist tells me maybe I don't have enough funds in that card which was a joke probably I guess .... anyways I paid through another card .... the breakfast was amazing ..... very good hospitality and definitely enjoyed my stay .....

Very classy Hotel, stayed there recently and was really taken aback by the quality and ambiance. The hotel is placed in front of the ocean and has its own private beach. Staff all speak English and are very accommodating. They are also very friendly and make you feel welcomed and at home. Rooms are super clean and super spacious. Breakfast is fresh and special, catering for a wide variety of palates daily. Currency exchange options at the reception desk and the hotel is situated in a super safe and secure area.

The hotel's location is superb. Right off the beach which means stinning views of the sea. The hotel itself is beautiful. Lovely reception area. Comfy dining area and lounge, clean too. The staff is very accommodating. I'm withholding one star for two reasons: 1) the service in the lounge / terrace was terribly slow. The area seemed to be understaffed. We felt neglected at some point. 2) the pool area needs more towels. Waiting for towels to come back from the laundry is disappointing & having so few pool loungers meant that many either had to sit on the grass or not come out to the pool at all. As a side note: please look into adding entertainment for kids as well.

Amazing place with amazing service. Truly enjoyed the stay. We were taken care of. Our transfer drive was at the airport on arrival and made sure we were comfortable. See you again soon.

Beautiful hotel. Buffet was incredible. Loved the huge banyan/fig tree and it’s proximity to the ocean.

It has a serene environment with a nice beach view. Rooms are comfy with all the necessary facilities. The food is good and fits all people from diverse areas. Staff are nice but they can do better.

From the moment you set foot in you can tell this is a top star rated luxury hotel. It just smells of quality. Plus it's literally on the beach side. So the views especially from the restaurant are amazing. Speaking of the restaurant, the food variety is also top notch. Even when the hotel is fully booked there was more than enough for everyone. All these come at a cost though so if you are looking for a fairly affordable accommodation this may not be it.

I had the pleasure of trying out the prego at the restaurant and I have to say that I was shocked at how good it was. It was remarkably delicious with high quality meat. It was huge, tasty, juicy and the optional peri peri sauce was the cherry ontop.

The pros : trusted choice for hotel accommodation in Maputo for many years. Nice location on the water, nice layout on both sides of the reception, short drive from city center, and an excellent buffet spread for breakfast The cons : shuttle service to/from the airport let us down twice and we had to use taxis

Exceptional Experience at Southern Sun Hotel My stay at the Southern Sun Hotel in Maputo was truly exceptional. From start to finish, the experience was top-notch. The staff at this hotel stands out for their politeness and professionalism. Their warm welcome and willingness to assist made me feel right at home. The cleanliness and aroma of the hotel are remarkable. The pleasant scent that greets you upon entering the reception area, along with the beautiful orchid flowers, create an inviting atmosphere. What's more, the hotel's location is simply amazing. The moment you step inside, you're greeted with a breathtaking view of the serene blue sea It's a sight to behold. I wholeheartedly recommend the Southern Sun Hotel in Maputo for an unforgettable and delightful stay. It's a true gem in this city.

I'm in two minds to write this review, because we had a fantastic stay back in August on our family holiday. The hotel, the staff, the food, the room, on the whole all were great and it was a really pleasant surprise and felt super plush after 10 days in more rustic Xai-Xai lodgings! The reason I have given two stars is because, over two months later, the hotel has been unable to refund me the holding deposit they took on my UK debit card when I checked in. I've spoken to reception, to the Financial Controller, all numerous times, but there is simply no urgency in helping me to get my money refunded. They blame the bank, the bank blames them. The deposit is a relatively small amount. But it does beg the question - should a guest have to be responsible for checking their bank balance to ensure that their deposit has been refunded? I think not. Come on guys - it's simply unacceptable in this day and age. If you were happy to take my money, be happy to refund it to me

Loud kids running the halls which makes sleep difficult especially after midnight. Nice location and facilities with the exception of a few problems with the room AC, also a great view of the beach and surrounding areas.

We had a great overnight stay on our way to South Africa. Our room was very comfortable and Reception staff and porters were extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast was a real highlight - a huge variety of options and all delicious! The ocean views were spectacular and the hotel has a classic old-school charm. However, it has to be said that the waitrons at the restaurant at dinner and at breakfast were sole of the most rude and aggressive I have ever come across, and they are definitely in need of some customer service training. I would be more than happy to share specific details if management would like to contact me.

Amazing hotel just next to the ocean. Recommending to go for buffet breakfast as the food is really nice and fresh. Customer service was kind. The hotel is literally paradise. Thank you!

Great location, very helpful and attentive staff in reception and restaurant. Got upgraded to a sea facing view with balcony. Thank you. This hotel is very tired though and desperately needs a thorough refurbishment. Rooms are old, locks broken, outdated interiors. Sliding shutters between room and bathroom are pointless as they allow light through when someone goes to the bathroom at night. Cleaning staff make a noise every morning from 7am chatting loudly to each other. Not the first time this has happened, which is very annoying when trying to enjoy a sleep in whilst on holiday. Breakfast is ok, nothing special. Nice location to meet for business meeting or casual chat.

I was sure they went out to the high seas to get my fish because I waited 1 and a half hours for it. Then I was given the bill while still having my lunch and made to pay it then and there. For a 5 star hotel, more organization is needed.

Southern Sun situated close enough to the city centre to be easily accessible yet far enough out of the hustle and bustle makes for an ideal location for any traveler. The General Manager and his friendly staff always goes the extra mile to make every stay memorable. The view from the hotel is spectacular, the food well prepared and efficient service makes for an all round excellent experience.

We had the privilege of having a quick stay at Southern Sun Maputo on our honeymoon, organised by the General Manager. It is brilliantly situated by the ocean with very friendly staff. Great food as well. Highly recommended.

Stunning hotel with some of the most incredible views you will ever see. Their buffet breakfasts are an absolute treat (think Sun City 10 years ago). Rooms are outdated and could use a revamp

The place met my expectations and their buffet had quite a wide variety dishes and everything tasted delicious. They have a fully stocked up bar too👌.

I stayed at the Southern Sun for work. Great staff and service. Nice buffet for breakfast and dinner, and menu service as well. A short taxi ride to the downtown if needed. Quality cocktails at the bar. Highly recommended.

I was last here 10 years ago, and the hotel still looks as perfect and better! Good variety of breakfast and very helpful staff! Julena who helped me with my booking months prior to my stay and Julia at reception. Clean rooms and beautiful well maintained grounds . Always will be my first choice

This is an absolutely lovely hotel. The rooms are large and comfortable. It is located literally on the beach. Most of the staff speak good English. BUT.... The food and drinks are really very expensive. It was R85 for a not so tasty cappuccino. R350 for a largish margarita pizza and R225 for a chicken and mayo sandwich (prices in South African Rands)

The people employed at Southern Sun make all the difference making ones stay there like being a home away from home. The set up makes it not so many ch a hotel but a family home. Chris and Julia and the Manager John gave us a memory of a lifetime experience. The restaurant dining and bar staff were friendly and helpful, the housekeeping warm, approachable and customer focused even and especially when letting one know what they have run out of and proposing a solution. It made sense to feel like this is acceptable and helpful as you would react to a family

Lovely views from the hotel of the ocean. I had a short but sweet stay for a work event. I enjoyed the dinner dessert selection to tame the sweet craving. There is a huge variety of food breakfast to include traditional chicken soup, smoked haddock, omelette, sausage, etc. The cereal variety is impressive as well the seasonal fruit. Also the security in the hotel parking helped me get parking as the parking lot was full. Muito obrigado team Southern Sun.

What a phenomenal hotel and property this us! The moment I walked in, I felt right at home! My checkin process was so smooth, thanks to Jorge! He was super professional, and very accommodating! The room (219) was perfectly appointed, with stunning views of the pool, garden, and beach. The bed was very comfortable, and it had all amenities necessary for a great stay. The restaurant was outstanding, especially my amazing server Deonildes! He was attentive the entire night, and made me feel like family! The food was delicious, especially the Grouper fish, which was perfectly seasoned and cooked! Overall, this is one superb property that you can't miss! The landscape is beautiful, the food is delicious, the rooms are well appointed, and the staff was outstanding and friendly at every turn! I highly recommend staying here while in Maputo!

Another favourite relaxed hotel with great AC and Wifi connectivity. I love the extension at this facility as I was last here almost 9 years ago. Perfect get away right on the Bay yet close to all other amenities
