Gandikota Camping- what it is and what it is not As I walked to the river view point inside the ruins of the Gandikota fort, the evening sun lit up the canyon in gold. I realized that I was not prepared for the enormity of the canyon. It’s a must see place. Sitting there, looking at it, in the sun and the cool breeze, is an opportunity to ground oneself. Now about some tips that might help for overall planning. 1. It take almost same time from Hyderabad or Bangalore by road. As of Dec 2021, the road from Bangalore is 80% decent and the rest patchy. The route I took went from Bangalore - Kadri - Pulivendula - Gandikota. Thanks Google maps 2. Best to reach by early evening, camp over night and return or move on after breakfast. 3. On arrival, visit the fort. Inside the fort there are ruins of two temples, fort in general, masjid, Granary, river and Canyon view point. There are boards that shows the directions inside the fort. 4. As you reach the fort, the vehicles can either be parked out side or driven to parking place inside the fort. If you park outside there is easily a 500 m walk in to the fort. Inside the fort there is a whole village where people still live. If you chose to drive inside, you will have to go through stone laid village road. It’s a narrow single lane road for going in and coming out. Road is big enough to take even larger SUVs but not anything larger than that. If you run in to another vehicle on that road, it could become a bit tricky. But plenty of people take their vehicles all the way in to the fort. 5. After visiting the fort. The road towards camping site is the one that goes to right as you stand facing the fort. There are sufficient boards for camping right there and shouldn’t be confusing at all. Even otherwise, local people are extremely helpful- feel free to ask. 6. About camping operators: there are many. All camps are adjacent or colocated. There are probably 500 makeshift tents like the ones in the pictures. All of them are right at the cliff. Among the camping operators- “Freakout Adventures” alone has permanent tents as well. Freakout also has a perimeters for their camp which could give a sense of security where as others are just outdoor camping. 7. Safety first: the place appeared safe - men, women, families and children. 8. Challenge: Only Freakout has permanent tents that has attached bathrooms. Other campers have shared bathrooms which are at least 500 mts away from the camping site. This could be a problem for few. If you have to go to bathroom, you have to pick a vehicle and go. 9. Food: food options are very basic. Not the place you go for “food”. 10. The operators arrange a campfire at sight - mostly in the package. 11. Unless you have asked specifically to come along, operators would just guide you in the direction of other sightseeing spots like water fall. They may not come along. I personally found it challenging to walk a KM through the forest to the water falls unguided - and not recommended- not for security reasons , but one could get lost. Airtel reception was poor. Would recommend that this is clearly spoken and agreed while booking. Operators have a tendency to say yes as if it’s in the package. What’s in the package is usually the camping and food - and not the guided tour. 12. How to get there: I rode a motorcycle. Riding up and down from bangalore in one day was a bit tiring. 13. Canyon is a one overnight trip. Pls note that, the make shift tents are suitable only for night stay. If you are staying for more days, go for permanent tents of the resort. 14. Best time to visit is the winter - Oct to Jan. 15. Chose a full moon night to make the whole sight spectacular. 16. The operators give basic rubber bedding in the tents, carry sleeping bags. Tents are clean- no complaints 17. Pls don’t litter

The views are very picturesque and sunrise is very beautiful. But the maintenance is very worst no basic amenities available, and no cleanliness. Many over night campings are available.

“Gandikota”, Gandi means Gorge and Kota means Fort (Fort built on the gorge). This place came into limelight because of its natural beauty, the gorge wherein River Penna flows through and got a tag as “Grand Canyon of India”. Slowly and steadily it started getting popular and people from across the country started visiting this place. Now being very developed by tourism department, this place offers various stay options, adventure activities such as rappelling, rock climbing, zipline, etc. Food still might be a problem. Resorts like Haritha have their own restaurant offer great food and drinks. Just be aware of Colobinae(langur) at the view point, though they are not harmful. One can have a splendid view of the gorge with river penna flowing through and also you can view the Mylavaram Project (reservoir and dam) on the other side. These breathtaking views can’t be missed when you’re here. Just sit on the edge of gorge and relax.

One of the most unique places in India , Climbing the rocks for the view point can be bit tricky , so on needs to be very careful while doing it , the view is very beautiful, It is mostly dried in summer and weather is quite hot as well ,Highly suggested to go in winters ,There is not lot of facilities near , Area lacks shops and restaurants, Haritha resturant nearby is not maintained properly, better to prepare and go. Best visit the view point is to reach before sunrise. I spotted few lizards between rocks as well.

Gandikota - the Grand Canyon of India is a must visit place. Sunrise and sun sets are 2 key things that we should see during the trip to Gandikota. We stayed in the Punnami resort and this point was walkable from that place. In the early morning, amidst the rocks viewing the Pennar River and the Sun rising slowly is a magnificent sight. You go to the Gorge and pick up a nice place, sit on it and view this. This is once a lifetime experience and will treasure it for years. U recommend you go there during the afternoon, witness the sunset, rest there in the nearby place or Punnami resort, wake up in the morning, View the sun rise and head back home.

This place is known as Grand Canyon of India. Located in Jammalamadugu village of AP. Its 390 KMS from hyderabad, one night journey. We have tent stay here to stay from Haritha Resorts. Food and alcohol are available here. Recommended to carry alcohol as it is bit costly there. Camp fire is arranged here by the management. You have a beautiful view from top of the mountain. Penna river flows from middle of these mountains We have many activities like river rafting, Trecking and others Perfect weekend spot to hang out with friends and family. A decent and well maintained place

Most of the reviews are regarding the tents but my review is for the view point itself. The view point is amazing and provides a beautiful view of the gorge. Some idiots are spoiling this beauty by throwing bottles and waste here and there but cannot do anything about them and they are always present everywhere to spoil India. Overall, this place is a must visit if coming to Gandikota. You can sit here for several minutes and enjoy the view.

One should not miss the sunrise at this canyon. That was a best experience had there. The canyon was formed by Penna river makes you feel so fresh and had the beautiful landscape. Be careful while hiking as the rocks are bit slippery and avoid going to the edges. Along with this you can get to view the Gandikota fort which is adjacent to the canyon for the architectural brilliance.

Idk why there are so many reviews about the campground here. This is for the view point. Calling this the "Grand Canyon of India" is a wild exaggeration. Does not come anywhere near the scale of the Grand Canyon. That said, it is nice to see India attempt to preserve such natural beauty. It was great during both sunrise and sunset. Practically deserted during sunrise. Very crowded during sunset. The Penna river was fairly full when we went - to the point where boating options were cancelled due to fast currents. There is a trail nearby that takes you down to the river. It is fairly steep with very little shade. I would recommend going very early in the day. The views on this trail are pretty great and because it is away from the roads and other people, you can hear all the sounds of nature. It gets incredibly hot. It was 43C when we went. Take lots of water.

Gandikota canyon; where the actual view point is located. There are two viewpoints in Gandikota; one is inside the fort (the most popular one) and other one is outside the fort where people also camp out. In Gandikota every thing is inside the fort only; Gandikota river view point, Madhavaraya tmple, Jumma Mosque and Raghunatha Swamy Temple. There is no system of parking here you can drive your car all the way to the mosque inside the fort where the Gandikota river view point is located OR you can park outside and walk. The walk is like 700m from the fort entrance. A small village is also inside the fort through which you go to view point. This canyon is nothing like grand canyon in Arizona/Utah but still worth appreciating it.

Gandikota is a hidden gem in the heart of Andhra Pradesh, India. This small village is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery and historical landmarks that I've ever seen. One of the main attractions in Gandikota is the stunning Gandikota Fort, which dates back to the 13th century and offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's rich history. But that's not all there is to see and do in Gandikota. For adventure seekers, there are plenty of exciting activities to enjoy here. One of the most popular is hiking in the nearby hills, which offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. You can also go on a thrilling rock climbing expedition, or try your hand at rappelling down the sheer cliffs that surround the village. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, you can take a boat ride on the river Penna that flows through the village, or simply soak up the peaceful atmosphere and enjoy a picnic by the river. For history buffs, there are plenty of ancient temples and other monuments to explore in the area, including the Jamia Masjid and the Ranganatha Swamy Temple. Overall, I would highly recommend Gandikota to anyone looking for a unique and memorable travel experience in India. Whether you're an adventure seeker or a history buff, there's something for everyone to enjoy here. So pack your bags, head to Gandikota, and get ready to make some unforgettable memories!

View point is great. We can enjoy a pleasing sunrise here. Proper footwear should be used to climb the rocks to reach the view point. Care must be taken when you are on the way to reach the view point as the way to reach to top is not a normal and easy way. You can get lifetime best pictures here.

The Grand Canyon of India a must visit!! Though it's a walk on the boulders n rocks so wear good shoes, cover up yourself and wear a lot of sunscreen. Gorgeous Rocky terrain with the river front. We visited it in the afternoon as there was less crowd. During sunset it will be over crowded. A night stay is recommended so that you can rest n enjoy the place. We stayed at Freakouts but it was over crowded for a Saturday about 350 extra tents. If you want to really enjoy the place go on a weekday. Food is only Andra Food n some food stalls selling maggi n omlette. Haritha is the only restaurant style place but limited options of Andra food available. Bathrooms are not clean, so manage it. We stayed in Swiss tents in Freakouts so we had a personal washroom n a tent room. Recommend that but it's expensive!

Great Indian canon of India...Beautiful place for night camp & a day visit. Night camping was the best & awesome experience at this place. Have to be careful at rainy season as the rocks would be bit slippery. Best time to visit is during Oct-Feb - after rainy season & during winter season. Summer would be very hot here.
