The Grounds, Let me start with saying the fit-out of this Venue is amazing. The Parisian nights atmosphere and vibe was simply impeccable from all of the little nuances to the careful designs. We had just arrived from interstate and wanted the city store to be our first food adventure of our trip! Food Presentation: 7/10 • It could certainly have been amplified with visual additions just to satisfy the eyes a bit more given brunch/breakfast culture is constantly evolving. Taste: 7/10 • Avocado and Feta on Toast | Poached Eggs Florentine - We are happy with the taste, very safe but lacking in more flavour whether it should be sprinkled with paprika or some subtle spice to give it a kick. Service: 4/10 • Big props to the Madam Host of the morning and our very own handsome Inigo Montoya in the bar, these two had best service but neither of them were assigned to the floor (Bar Staff looked after us when he wasn’t busy behind the bar). The floor staff were certainly overwhelmed (possibly understaffed), only once were we acknowledged that we would be tended to and never again by the floor staff. I think there is a disconnect between following through and doing things one by one. If you do everything at once nothing will be achieved which seems to be the case. We did notice with several other tables there was something wrong (food missing, no bill check, no water poured). Overall, it is a good experience for Breakfast! I understand it’s a Friday morning and very hectic but we do want to stay true to honest feedback and hopefully more little improvements that I know is the standard for The Grounds. Next time we’ll definitely do a Dinner visit!

PSALM 1 Nov 2023 waitress - You are so UNFORGETTABLE - 1 Nov. 2023 Some of the best coffee in Sydney! The tasting board for two was a very nice set of well made drinks; none of which had a hint of bitterness, most surprisingly the cold brew which was so smooth and sweet my boyfriend wish he could take a few gallons with him back to the South Korea. The beef steak was very good and so filling as well. To top it off the milk-chocolate passion fruit dessert was a very nice patisserie-style desert without too much heaviness. Do yourself a favor; come with some friends, have some good food and some good coffee and enjoy the great environment they have set up for you!

The interior is striking, with an old-school, vintage and almost apothecary aesthetic. It's a warm Parisian bistro theme, and I like the attention to detail in their glasses and plates/tableware. I ordered their smoked brisket sandwich from the Lunch Menu. It came out quite quickly. I would say the brisket itself inside of the sandwich was average, I wouldn't write home about it. But the spread on the sandwich and especially the onion ring inside was quite tasty. I would have to visit again to judge the savoury food A very cute place to visit so close everything in Town Hall. I would definitely recommend the cake here. My last note would be that I wish there was more Vegan options on the menu to begin with so I could bring my family and friends here

Went here today at lunch time, the reception is the best. Nice smile and really positive attitude and energy. The restaurant and decorations are really nice. The real downside are wait staffs, and foods. They all looks delicious and really nice but no. Beef brisket is super dry. The rice dish are undercooked (rice is still hard). Pork are tasteless. Chicken are alright. Overall, wouldn’t recommend to anyone who’s looking for food but maybe for drinks will be better.

We were very pleased to be able to walk in for lunch. Our meals, deserts and coffees were delicious and satisfying. The decor is warm European and the busy vibe adds quality to the experience. The woman serving us was not 5-star helpful when our Northern Ireland visitor asked for more chips to be added to his steak and frites plate! Other than that, all wonderful.

Viewed as a landmark restaurant representative of CBD's charm, the majorly glowing reviews about it will raise anyone's expectations of this place. So when we came around for lunch, we were left dissatisfied and desiring more from its attractive reputation. I believe you're paying for an entry fee into an antique shop rather than a well-rounded restaurant experience. The aesthetic of a classic and quaint diner is undoubtedly captivating when you're snugly tucked under intimate, dim lighting. However, it is extremely claustrophobic to the point where if you open your arms to the side, you are guaranteed to hit the other table in the face. While a busy restaurant indicates good business, I would say it works the opposite for this place. During the pandemic where omicron is still at its peak, the receptionist tried to seat us at a two-seater only a few inches away from the other table. So when we asked to sit at a four-seater to abide by social distancing rules, she turned sour and refused to serve us afterwards. Due to unwavering customer traffic, the staff all seem disorientated in refilling water and supplying the right amount of cutlery but surprisingly, food comes promptly. We ordered a Mediterranean bowl and beef brisket sandwich along with a cappuccino. The salad bowl was pleasantly presented with a tasty combination of yoghurt, halloumi and melt-in-your-mouth roasted vegetables. An alarming sign was the pile of fries appearing greater than the actual sandwich itself, though I liked the authentic touch of leaving the potato skin on the fries. The construction of flavours in the sandwich was pleasant with the sting of the Russian dressing and pickles balancing out the robust taste of the brisket, if only there were more or larger onion rings to unite it all. Despite the praise surrounding its coffee, the cappuccino was nowhere near what it was supposed to be. It was alright, at best. What really dampens the mood is the steep prices for such mediocre service and food, even for the CBD! Tourists, mind your wallets in the CBD and never fall for appearances!

Excellent service from the waitress in white shirt who came to take the order from us. Dessert and coffee was delightful. I would recommend to reserve table otherwise it will be long wait with very welcoming attitude and plenty of space. We would love to come back here again. Everything that I did mentioned above is not what we receive from here. Moreover, when I asked the bill from her she even put the dirty dish from another table in front of me that was totally unacceptable for customers service. Also I would recommend you to have the QR code to order that should be better from the table service that we received from staff. The only star I put here is the good looking decoration and shop atmosphere.

My friend and I had lunch here and I would say this place is a bit hyped. I mean, the ambiance is amazing, it’s like “Down the rabbit hole” effect. Love the pink hue they have over the lights, a bit hot inside, and too crowded. You could literally read what’s on next table person’s phone. I didn’t want to be creepy, but you got it. The lady who took care of our seats wasn’t that friendly. She didn’t greet us or smile. The staff were really nice.

Honestly have no complaints for this place! The venue is stunning (but small so definitely book), and the menu has lots of variety! The service is attentive and we were seated, served and received our food super quick. The coffee is great and the food is yummy!

I've been to their other venue so was expecting a nice meal. What I found was a dining room that was stiflingly hot and much too loud to hold a conversation, a glass of GSM that tasted like it came from a bottle opened 3 days ago, and an under-seasoned veal cutlet so over-done that it came out the colour of dark chocolate and tasted of spent-match. The other meals looked nice, so I think I was the odd one out there, but even so I am not in a hurry to go back. Lastly, I was there as a guest of someone else, so was unable to complain, as I would normally - so I can't comment on how they handle problems.

It’s a cute place located in the centre of the city. Truly suggest to make a booking. They are pretty busy. The place is very cute. Service is amazing. We’ve ordered the lobster Benedict that was pretty good. My coffee was good too. Glad I came here on my last day in Sydney to have lunch with a friend

This place has a really nice atmosphere, it’s very well decorated inside. We both opted for the pancakes which were delicious. I was impressed at the presentation of the iced mocha but it was quite pricey at $7.50. Some of the tables are quite cramped; they originally tried to seat us at a table right beside the tills which most guests also have to walk by so I would try to avoid that one as you’ll have a lot of people brushing against you.

Came here with my friends for my birthday. They ordered a cake from Alexandria and the staff sang to me Happy Birthday along with my friends. I thought that was very nice of them. During our whole dinner the staff was very helpful and always refilled our water. The drinks were good and the food was tasty but a bit expensive for what you get. I got the steak frites and it was beautifully cooked and seasoned. The cake was delicious. Would definitely go back again for the drinks or for a celebration. Everyone was kind and very polite and it was a positive experience overall.

The hot chocolate was good but the service was the worst I’ve experienced. It takes them 20 minutes to take your order (we ordered 2 choc croissants, 1 almond and 1 plain) and they are attentive to refilling water. After another 30 minutes we ask them where our croissants are which took them one minute to plate up and they also said oh we are out of chocolate croissants after we asked them which is not good enough.

Really depends on what you're looking for. The interior is striking and there is so much potential for this place. It's decent for the ambience and a drink I guess. Sadly, the food is really ordinary and some of the portions are small compared to other places charging the same price in the city. I'd happily take my friends somewhere else. The only redeeming factor is that we had an attentive and kind waitress. Pity the front of house staff aren't as welcoming as those working within the place.

Aweful place I paid $40 for a pathetic piece of steak with two leaves as a side, I asked medium rare the steak was rather medium to well done and low quality. Atmosphere is okay the staff were friendly and professional which is why i didn't choose 0.

Great place for breakfast or lunch. Good food, good vibes. Essential to reserve a table if you want to make sure to enjoy your time at Grounds of the City. Unfortunately no all day breakfast - we were a bit late and needed to go for lunch instead.

Friendly and timely service. Beautiful and thoughtful decor. A very nice mood is set inside and it was a wonderful experience. Most amazing of all was the food. Usually hyped up places with all this decor lacks in taste and flavors but each and every dish we tried was amazing! This place is the real deal.. the total package. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

I totally agree with any comments stating it's too crowded. It seems like always busy, all day. It's not spacious but has a vintage vibe compared to another The Grounds. It's a brunch restaurant with sweet location in the city, so the price is expectedly a bit high. Service is good but staffs are really busy and a bit hard to call them over to order. I love their dishes, especially their cakes. It's a large portion that can share for 2.

I love the ambience from The Grounds of The City. The venue transforms you back to the old Parisian day, with vintage pieces of furniture, jazzy music, yellow lightbulbs, and the drink display. One can’t walk past and ignore this wonderful aesthetic. The cafe is so popular that it left many diners disappointed without a booking. The staff are lovely and efficient. The coffee and cakes are great. However, I think the food is very average, with small serving, and expensive price. I’m happy to pay to relax here with a drink or dessert and the ambience. But not for the savoury items.

Great food and the most incredible interiors. Book ahead to guarantee a table as there can be a wait. Beautiful spot for dinner/date night. Leave room for dessert or pop in for coffee & cake/pastries during the day. The strawberry chiffon cake is a must try but is only available in the day/until sold out.

This restaurant has a nice classy ambience and it is child-friendly. The staff were really lovely and engaging. The food came pretty fast even though it was relatively crowded. I would recommend the Fresh Egg Bucatini Pasta and the desserts. I also saw many people coming here just for coffee and desserts, which I guess that's what it is famous for. Although the price was slightly pricey (though reasonable), my family and I had a great experience here.

Service is fantastic, wait staff are all friendly and very helpful, the atmosphere is great, the venue is beautiful. The food is good but I doubt it is good enough for the price you pay. Not really any vegan options, other than salad. The one Salad that is actually Vegan is beautiful. I had have the tomato salad altered to not have buffalo mozzarella. I payed $22 for a small plate of tomatoes, I feel if I remove the main component of a meal to either receive more of what is left on offer or at least a discount. I probably won't be back.

I had a fantastic time at The Grounds of the City. Despite my friend feeling unwell, a staff member went the extra mile to assist her, for this we’re most grateful. I’m sorry I didn’t ask your name, if you’re reading this review, please know we’re most grateful and commend you on your empathy, professionalism and maturity. The delicious beverages and lunch were thoroughly enjoyed, and the ambiance made it feel like we could be anywhere in the world. Thankfully the experience was superbly enjoyed and easier because we booked our table a couple of days ago and didn’t have to wait or discover there wasn’t a table free. Thank you!

Came here for a mate’s birthday on Sunday around 11AM! The breakfast menu was great (mushroom crumpets a 👍, as was the french toast and other items), and great atmosphere - a shame about the service though. An Asian waiter with glasses took a photo of us, then said my eyes were squinty in the photo and made a squinting expression! I’m Asian too and it’s true, but I can’t give it a pass - I felt uncomfortable and don’t think that service belongs anywhere. The food’s good, but because of the above I’d give this place a steer.

The food was superb. I had the King Crab Linguine and it was just the right amount before my jeans button was going to burst. I had to eat very bite of it! My friends enjoyed their schnitzel and lamb very much so that one even licked the plate! Service was professional and welcoming. Ambience and decor was well done as though you don't feel like you are in the city having a birthday lunch with friends on a weekday! Will come back to taste more items on the menu.

I’d say the Grounds of the City is the best cafe in Sydney CBD and has the best cafe interior in Australia. Their popular desserts are as divine as the ambience. It’s called ??Key Lime Baked Alaska with brown butter caramel, rum raisin ice-cream and toasted lime meringue. Refreshments & coffees are also top notch. Didn’t expect rose petals for the orange & cherry soda and basil for the classic lemonade but why not? Recommend the classic lemonade after a heavy meal.

Definitely one of our go-to city dining spots since it never disappoints. Food is great and atmosphere is like you’ve stepped onto a scene in a Wes Anderson movie. Also love the cocktail specials too, always good to mix it up. We’ve been when we haven’t booked and the staff are always very accommodating.

Excellent service. However the food quality was a let down. I’ve ordered the $39 lobster bisque pasta only to find a huge clump and the dish is lukewarm. The sauce is tasty but I feel like i am eating leftover pasta reheated in microwave. Should have ordered pastries instead. Ambience wise, well decorated interior and very loud.

We strolled by here on our first night in Sydney looking for a place to have dessert and after dinner drinks. Such an impressive restaurant. When you walk in you are transported to a little Parisian cafe (with a little NY city diner thrown in). We sat at the bar and had the best time conversing with the bartender and his apprentice. Drinks and desert were fabulous. We were so impressed we decided to try the Grounds for breakfast on our last day. Coffee and food was fantastic, we each ordered eggs on toast and shared a few sides, all were amazing. The vibe is relaxed even though the restaurant is very busy. They have a lot of staff on so there’s no waiting for anything. Everyone is super friendly.

I'm so glad we discovered this place! The restaurant vibe was like stepping back in time to the 1920's/30s...The food was so good, quality gourmet style. Friendly staff. Nice vintage jazz music playing in the background. I would definitely recommend visiting this restaurant if you want a unique dining experience :)

We had afternoon coffee , great and beautiful presentation of coffee. I have ordered deconstruction hot mocca However there is 0 level of hotness. Another order was iced mocca, it was good. Desserts were good, delicious and good size. Service was excellent. Staffs are friendly. Atmosphere is good. Beautiful decoration inside.

This is a really cool Cafe, but it was quite noisy inside. Unfortunately, I was seated with a view of the wall, which was disappointing in such an interesting cafe. I found the menu boring, perhass a bit too fancy for a cafe lunch, but my cauliflower and haloumi salad was delicious. It was a cold day, and I would have liked something warm, like a yummy pumpkin soup, but the warm choices on the menu were seafood pastas, steak frites, pork something and hamburger. Mum's steak sandwich was mediocre, served on thick cut toast that made it hard to bite, and a few slices of steak.

We came for the high tea and were pleasantly surprised. It was like stepping into a swish 1920s or 1930s tavern. Low lighting, art Deco decor, old jazz... it had the lot. I loved it. The high tea was yum with a quiche, gourmet sandwiches, cakes, macarons and scones. Reading through the menu there are wonderful cakes and cocktails here too Located in the building directly opposite the QVB on George Street, it is a few minutes' walk from Town Hall station.

Such a pretty place! It really takes you into another world away from the street outside. Food was delicious overall but the Mac and cheese a little bland. My gnocchi was amazing though! Only thing that let them down was the service. They were very nice but not present at all we had to call them over for everything and weren’t around much so getting a hold of someone was difficult. Overall a cute fun place to go have some yummy food.

Interesting place to stop by for a coffee. The main plus of this place is that it’s open much later than a lot of other cafes in the city if you are after a coffee late in the afternoon. We tried coffee and a tart. While the coffee was good the tart was fairly average. Nonetheless still worthwhile to give it a try.

This place is excellent for a true Aussie experience. You start off with an amazing introduction to the place by the waiters, this place is so booked out that you have made reservations the night before. The restaurant itself is located in the Galeries, it's very old fashioned but yet modern, unfortunately, I did not enjoy it. For started I had to yell at my friend in order to have a conversation, it was pretty hectic. It was sadly very hard to communicate. The service however was great, they listen, they understand and they seem happy to be there serving. However, a small thing to change that did bother me slightly is that when we were offered water, we were offered water or sparkling water, without telling us we need to pay, I don't mind paying but letting customers know I believe is pretty important. Especially in such a fancy environment. The food was absolutely fabulous, I got the Crab Omelet and I have never ever tasted such a good-tasting omelet. However, for the $29 I spent on the omelet, the portion size was way too small for that pricing. In fact, the bread was much bigger than the omelet which usually isn't a real food sign for a proper portion size. The bread tastes old unfortunately, It did not taste new at all. That was really disappointing. The coffee was pretty nice, I was really happy with it. The Atmosphere was alright, the inside looked beautiful, the kitchen looked amazing, but like I said I couldn't hear my friend speak at all, and that I don't like, however since the place was so packed, what can you really expect? The place also looked quite dirty, it wasn't cleaned properly, I could see the wet stains on the glass in front of me. There was also barely any ventilation, I felt the air being quite heavy. Overall I was quite impressed but I was disappointed with a few points in this place.

Beautiful restaurant. The decorations and furniture of the restaurant were very pleasing to the eye. We came here for breakfast and our food came in a timely manner and the presentation was lovely. Very delicious and filling. The staff were very professional and polite as well. The desserts were great as well, not too sweet and perfect to share after a meal. Our only complaint would be that the strawberry dream latte did not fit the menu description. We ordered 3 iced lattes and one regular, all of which were the strawberry dream however, when it came it appeared to be just a regular latte. We could not taste any hints of strawberry, white chocolate or caramel as stated from the description. Overall a nice experience, would be happy to come back to try lunch and dinner.

Oh my goodness. I don’t live in Sydney but Brisbane I was not sure where to go for lunch today in the city so I asked the lovely concierge in the Hilton and he directed me to the Grounds. What a find. The staff are exceptional especially Lloyd and the lovely tall head Batman. The food was delicious, the atmosphere took me back to Downton Abbey era and was so comforting and peaceful. The bar stools are so comfortable and generally the place is so classy but not that u can’t enjoy and feel relaxed. I highly recommend this bar to anyone and if I am ever in Sydney again this will be my go to place. So good. Thanks guys. Donna Bunting.

A wonderful extension of the Grounds of Alexandria in the heart of Sydney. It has a beautiful vintage interior design. The coffee is just as good as the Grounds. However the Grounds of Sydney is less of a brunch spot but a full restaurant with alcoholic drinks. Their food is delicious and worth going.

Was recommended to visit while in town - WOW, the dining area is stunning. You walk in and are transported to an old-school Parisian restaurant with so much charm! They have done a great job at mastering the atmosphere. Despite the atmosphere, the food and service was average at best. Though the food was cooked and presented well, it just lacked flavour. I got the impression that everything was bulk made and there was little care to match ingredients. Furthermore, there was barely any service, except for taking orders and delivering the food. Nobody to check on the food or offer drink refills. Despite the lack of service, the POS system asked for a tip when paying. I did not appreciate this and can not see how they justify requesting a tip when there was no service. Additionally, the prices are already high, and Australian workers already earn a high wage, so I can not see the justification to seek a tip.

I had the mushroom crumpets with the morning margarita. Crumpets were burned on one side. Eggs were slightly over and margarita was nothing extraordinary. At over 45 AU dollars you would think it could be better. Service though was great we were able to be seated straight away, even though it was packed. Atmosphere was amazing but the seating was a bit cramped.

had the deconstructed mocha which was so fun to make and so yummy. love the idea of it. also had the passion fruit cheesecake: light cheesecake with strong flavors of passion fruit and a yummy crunchy base. service was alright but waiters seemed so busy it was hard to get hold of any of them to pay for the cheque. however, when they did come around they were very nice :)

(Translated by Google) The lighting is dark and the table is narrow, so it's a bit frustrating for a long time, but the atmosphere is good and the food tastes good. Ground of Alexandria has plenty of plants and good photos, while this is a good place to spend some time in Citi. The grounds of the city is certainly a unique experience love the cold brew there as it has a such a smooth texture and subtle bitterness compared to cold brews with a strong bitterness. The food was good but might be suited for my more people with an acquired taste. The decor inside was quite fancy and made me want to expect more about it. Overall, I was very impressed with the service as the waiter who served me and a friend was friendly and helpful.

Great spot in the City for this add on to the much loved Grounds in Alexandria. Has a lovely feel with a great buzz and the food is just as good as the original. And the cakes are sublime! Fast friendly service, a notch above most cbd cafes indeed!

Eggs and toast spot on. Also had a macadamia chai latte, could have been warmer when served. Otherwise, pleasant experience. The decor and atmosphere inside was lovely.

This is indeed the cutest little restaurant and 100% worth the wait! Love the atmosphere they have created! A slight mixup with drinks but they made it right. Thank you, we had a lovely time at your restaurant!!

Great breakfast experience. We thoroughly enjoyed breakfast and coffee here. We got the hot cake and hash w/ bacon. The staff were exceptional and extremely accommodating with waiter ING and assistance with our 1.5yo. Was the best way to finish off a holiday away from home. Highly recommend!

The food is better than the grounds Alexandria. A bit pricy here but reflecting the location and service.

Nice place, but too much pathos even when you get just coffee takeaway. Overall nice and quiet place to have a business lunch.

been here for a couple of times for lunch which is alright. but their breakfast menu is better imo. they have a good selection that are not on the other cafes. pastrami on toast is amazing! the omelette and trout is nice too but pastrami one is 👍👍! cakes as always is yummy and not too sweet. especially the chiffon, it’s really light! and we had a very lovely server! good way to start the day!

The place its magical!!! Such a nice venue!!! The the food was good but it lacked a bit of seasoning .. that's the only reason why I don't give it 5 stars, the cheesecake very well balanced between sweetness and acidity ... highly recommended ... perfect place to have a date or just have a good lunch ... I'll be back for breakfast!!

Pretentious & overpriced -food is OK, nothing to rave about, even a bit bland at times . Coffee is ridiculously expensive - $5 for a small filter coffee! Also, loud dance music for breakfast is quite unpleasant

Just discovered the grounds in the city. Great coffee and friendly service. Retro dining experience however you will need to book in advance to get a table. Take away always a great option with a solid overall menu.

I absolutely love this place, the quality of there food at each little eatery is fantastic. The effort and art that goes into making this little place beautiful and so very different and themed. I go at least once a month for catch up with the girls or show family from out of state. Weekends can get very busy so suggest going very early they don’t have bookings only walk in times available. They also have cute little food stalls set up as well. A cute macaw while your eating your meal. Love the concept of paddock to plate styles food portions are huge so done over order. A little pricey but very worth it. Totally Instagramable ?

The service here is brilliant, it is not often you find a place with consistently generous staff, and that is one of the primary reasons I return; the only issue I have is with the menu. I wish the Grounds of the City could borrow some items from their Alexandra eateries, because it is not a place that has many options for vegetarians, unless you're fond of quinoa salads (which, I have to say, are repetitive after a while). Having said this, my partner complimented their meat options, so if that is your taste, then it should not be a problem!

Cute and tasty desserts❤️ Their signature coffee with ice cubes are fun to drink and also very nice. Red velvet cake and the strawberry on top Victoria sponge cake are delightful. Must go place???

Booked for 3, and got a table for 2 so felt very crowded. Food was OK, but I was still hungry afterwards.
