Visiting Single O in Sydney 🇦🇺 was an amazing experience when it comes to pure black single origin coffee. It doesn’t take long to realize that Australia is a espresso based milk beverage country. According to the Square Coffee Report 2019, 74% of all coffees served in a café were milk beverages (latte: 27%, flat white: 25%, cappuccino: 20%, and piccolo: 2%). That is massive compared to other countries. This is also why the baristas here in Australia are milk texturing robots. Single O launched an interesting black coffee model to emphasizing on the purest way to enjoy coffee – single origin black coffee: TAP-IN: “We launched black coffee on tap at our Surry Hills café in early 2019. The Freepour™ Taps were created to shake things up at the coffee bar, in the name of single origins. (Which we’ve had a thing for since 2003.) We set about to give pure black filter coffee as much precedence as the espresso machine. The result was a self-pay self-serve, coffee on tap system, front & center, at your fingertips.” I enjoyed a tasty single origin coffee from Costa Rica – Finca La Manita. While sipping this coffee chilled on ice, I enjoyed reading about their farm trip to Fina La Manita in 2013. It is always great to see when roaster engage in long-term relationships with farmers. I also liked the colorful chairs to sit outside against the nicely spray-painted wall. And one little extra: they made sure, that I won’t run away with the toilet key. Too big to run! And one more thing: it is also nice to see, that many cafés are using recycled toilet paper. The details make the difference. A big thank you also to the baristas for their great hospitality and the time to explain the TAP-IN system, that was cool. THANK YOU. #traceability #singleorigin #coffee #workflowautomation #workflowsolutions #makecoffeebetter

Went there in the morning, coffee was good, food was good. Would wanna go back again. They have a bunch of beans that they roast by themselves I believe. The time I went there were only outdoor seats as they didn’t open up the shop - but that might have changed now. Anyway, keen to come back here again soon.

Finally get a chance to get here after only having Single O coffees from other wholesaler. Staffs are amazing! Super friendly, Bubbly and Knowledgeable. Daily Fright is the must-have here! Very reasonable price Specialty Coffees. Would love to try their food next time.

Amazing!!!! Happened upon this place and there was consistently a line out the door. Great for small groups (2-4 people) or solo diners. I asked the waitress to surprise me with a coffee and food order and it was FANTASTIC. Best flat white and espresso tasting, and incredible corn fritters with avocado and soft boiled eggs. I stayed for nearly two hours reading a book. Highly recommend.

I found this recommended cafe on a website and am very glad I chose to visit today. Initially was hesitant to have the only solo seat available at the counter near the kitchen however it turned out to be a very good spot and enhanced my experience. There seemed to only be two main waitresses, Olivia and another girl. Olivia took care of me well and gave some greatly appreciated suggestions on both the food and coffee. The food menu has so many really tasty-sounding options and I found it hard to make a choice! Finally decided to go with one of the most popular main courses… “The Avo Show” - Caraway seed rye, achiote cashew cheese, pickled fennel, seasoned crumb, chilli oil, sweet lemon aspen, and added a poached egg as an extra. This was an excellent recommendation by Olivia and definitely lived up to the hype, especially with the added egg. Coffee - I had my default flat white - this was made to perfection by Abby, and I couldn’t resist the temptation to have a second. I had a brief chat with Abby too, she was very polite & friendly too, it was nice to watch her making the coffees, she looked cool, calm and collected and certainly knows how to make a top-quality brew or two. Finally, just as I was about to leave (just before closing as the cafe was now less than half empty) I decided to buy a few bags of coffee to give to friends as gifts ($20 each) - hopefully they’ll like them and will come to drink and eat here too, although the “other waitress” wasn’t very friendly, didn’t seem to have any time for me until I pointed that out and then she promptly changed her attitude. Overall, I had a lovely time and will come back. Hopefully Olivia and Abby will be there again 😍

Some of the most delicious coffees, the Single O beans got me on a journey of brewing at home. I finally got up to the Surry Hills Cafe and it was a treat, the filter flight was amazing as was the pork toastie. Staff were super attentive and friendly I also picked up a packet of the Parachute brews which are super useful for getting really amazing coffee when all you have near is a kettle

Staff were rude and disinterested. Food was super average. I ordered the ‘Dream Beans’ which was a luke warm soup with raw spinach and beans floating in it. Looked like someone threw up in a bowl and tasted only slightly better. No chance of a staff member asking if you liked your meal. Also, not having the option of skim milk is just arrogant. If you can only make a decent coffee with full cream, your coffees not that great.

Another gem in this gorgeous part of Sydney. Totally awesome coffee (we shared "batch for the table" and it was delicious) and the food was refreshingly unique. Our mushrooms on toast packed a spicy punch and what's not to love about espresso butter topping banana bread! Will definitely visit again

Nice environment, excellent service. Choices of single origin coffees and the flat white we had had amazing milk texture. I’d call it a Melbourne grade coffee. Cold brew is very reasonably priced.

Visited two mornings in a row. This is how much I liked it. Tried their tap filter lineup, piccolo, long black. I’ll have to say, the coffee is a tiny bit on the disappointing side given how high of an expectation I’ve had. Food wise, delicious! Chicken toasties, and the corn fritter, simply lovely.

This review is just for take away coffee. Service is quick and efficient. Could be a bit of a wait as they can get busy. Waiting area is very small as the takeaway corner is on a different area from sit in. Coffee is alright and one of the better ones in the area. Only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because the eftpos machine prompts for a tip (can select no) before paying.

Single O provides some excellent coffee with some tasty brunch dishes. The flat white was a little disappointing, but I did have high expectations. The filter coffee tasting was well worth it and included quite different beans. The chicken toastie was awesome!

Five stars across the board. Amazing food, cooked to perfection. Loaded brekky and lamb dish were exquisite. Coffee is legendary, pick the king black for a more robust punch. Pick up a bag of beans if you brew at home and you will thank me later. Service is top notch, we were helped by the wonderful Emma, genuine smile and she made sure we had an awesome experience.

I went this morning to the Single O Surry Hills Coffee shop. They are located in the Surry Hills. The location is very convenient, as it’s close to the Central Station, surrounded by other coffee shops, restaurants and chic hotels. Single O Surry Hills is a trendy café frequented by locals, early office workers. It gets busy during morning and lunch hours. They brew and prepare different kind of coffees. The coffee shop have nice breakfast and lunch option. I had a flat white with a breakfast burger with jack cheese. It was tasty and filling, I recommend hopping in there and have a cup of coffee.

What a great place! There was a waiting list, a queue outside and not even the rain was a deterrent to anyone trying to get a table. For me personally, the best part was the excellent service, hats off for that. The coffee was fantastic, the handless coffee cups are great. The food was delicious, we ordered the “Annato pork toastie”, it was perfection. The menu is interesting and wonderfully curated. The atmosphere is great, a bit loud because of the space and how busy it was. Every single detail is well thought, the menu with beautiful embroidery, the colours, the furnishing, the menu items. Reasonably priced. Everything is purposeful, I enjoyed that.

Finally ate here after years of just getting coffee. It was pretty good. Pretty busy for 8:30a but snagged one of the outside tables easily. Coffee was stellar as usual. The crumbed barramundi was very good although I was amused at the hot dog bun. Partners chicken sando was also good although I’d pass on the olives. Overall a good place that I might come back to for some chill focus time, but I wouldn’t wait in line for it.

It's a good idea to arrive early because Single O is always busy, and for good reason! This hidden coffee spot is worth the wait for a sit down meal and coffee, but if you're on the go, they have a self-serve coffee bar featuring a variety of brew options. This is one part among others of their commitment to sustainability and reducing waste. Their coffee is top quality and a staple for my machine at home. If you're travelling you can take home some of their single-serve, compostable coffee parachutes.

I'm sad to see there were only five stars i could give for service and atmosphere. While the food and coffee are stellar, it's the staff that are the stars of this show. I went to Single O on my LAST day in Sydney. I was feeling pretty down about it all when a friend suggested we go here for coffee and breakfast. I'm still brokenhearted I had to leave Australia, though the staff and fare at Single O eased that pain so very well. My server, Mitchell, greeted me at the door and kept me smiling with quips and multiple INCREDIBLE coffees. The beautiful Teddie (sp?) radiated around the table with water and laughter. The giant Scot with piercings and painted nails took the time to ask me about my travels and shared some of his experiences abroad with me. It wasn't just great food and coffee. It was a staff that took the time and care to really make my visit something SPECIAL. And I bought SOCKS. WHY? I didn't need socks! What I DID need was a memento of how great I felt after a trip to one of the best-run establishments I've patronized whilst in this incredible town. Thank you so much for making the end of my trip SO good. I'll be sure to return next time.

Single O was one of the most hyped-up places on my Sydney to-do list, evident from the long queues outside the cafe. I ordered a chai latte, which turned out to be one of the spicier chais I've tried (more of a sweet chai person). What really hit a home run was the banana bread. It was scrumptious and deliciously warm, and I just wanted more of it. The espresso butter complemented it well, but even without it, the banana bread would've been just as great. Service could have been a bit better, as the baristas seemed a bit stuck up and weren't as friendly. Getting our orders out took some time, especially with the banana bread, which was a bit slow. They do not have an onsite toilet, it's just around the corner but still accessible.

A colleague took me here for a coffee meeting as I was visiting from interstate. Wow! The coffee is expertly made with love and is beautiful to drink, and service is fabulous. I quickly discovered why it was so busy, yet the staff were very organised and things flowed quickly and smoothly. You can choose from a selection of single origin coffee. Love your work team!

My favourite coffee in Sydney. My flat white is always dreamy. Friendly staff and nice fit out. I ordered a full cream flat white which was delicious followed by a soy flat white which was equally as delicious. If you're a local you probably already know how good their coffee is and if you're a visitor it's definitely worth the trek out of the cbd to try it.

Great cafe with good coffee. Nice vibe and good food options. Not many vegan options but they were helpful in modifying dishes to make it vegan. Had a lovely avo on toast with an oat milk hot choc. Rate those. Picture below doesn't show the avo, but there's an entire avo under all that yummy dukkah!

Good place for a coffee, food and maybe some chit chat with friends. However the place being small, you will not be comfortable seeing people wait while you simply take too long to finish. What I mean to say is that it's not a place to go alone with a book. Otherwise it's an awesome little cafe

Had an iced filter and an eggplant katsu (super yum). Single origin was Kenyan. I'm listening to a podcast about a man struck by lightning as I'm writing this review. There was nice ambient jazz music playing in the background. Coffee quality was excellent. The set up of the cafe was like a minimalist open bar. The staff were next level friendly! They interacted with regulars from all walk off life. It's the Surry hills experience ☺️

Nice place with friendly staff who are highly attentive. Coffee was good enough, but not for the price. ($5.01 for a decaf LB) Was amused by the sign that they aren't accepting cash (covid I suppose) but that there's a surcharge for cards (and menu items on the weekend). Why not factor bank charges in to the COGS, so strange to add them on top (especially when not allowing other forms of payment.)

  • 4/5 Belle F. 3 years ago on Google
Really nice chicken sandwich but personally me and my friend thought there was a bit too much olives in, it just made it a bit too salty and it became too much by the second half of my sandwich. The ice tea wasn’t our favourite but not terrible. Just didn’t taste like ice tea. I will be going back as I can tell they have a lot of great more food and drink to offer.

Really delicious coffee. One of my faves in Sydney. Food is good too! A bit crowded inside but good atmosphere overall. You might have to wait a little during busy periods but worth checking out if you're around, whether you want to dine in or just get takeaway coffee.

We both ordered duck salad, was good just the duck was a bit too sweet for me. Would like to try other food on the menu next time. Highly recommend their coffee. The initial taste was light, not quite the same as other cafes, but soon you would notice it’s smooth texture and well balanced coffee taste and body. You would want to order a second cup to enjoy the experience.

I bought a Breville Precision brewer from their online store. I got a 10% discount as it was my first purchase and they were already the lowest online price. One of the only cafe with a plant based focus menu. Although the view is fun on the counter seat, it is almost impossible to get the attention from the servers. The croissant was mostly doughy with only one crispy edge. The blistered cauliflower was tasty but was cold so not the best for a cold day. The bread was quite tough to cut through. The okonomiyaki had a giant serving of pickled ginger. Very spicy. The plant based bacon was like a crispy salty cracker. The coffee on tap looked quite cool and you could use a cup to fill instead of the to go paper ones if you were drinking on site.

Came here for coffee twice while visiting Sydney. Lovely staff, even better coffee and overall a really nice experience. I also really enjoyed the little Easter egg in the doorbell - put a big smile on my face! 😁

The milk bun with bacon and egg was incredible. The bun was so light it was really just a vector for ingesting yummy bacon and egg and the mayo had a nice heat and just added to the whole experience. Coffee was delicious. I love the way they used the wall opposite in the alleyway for street art and then repeated the motif on the pillar inside the bar area.

Quaint little place which serves up amazing warm banana cake + coffee! I love how the banana cake was so crisp on the edges yet so soft inside! The butter that complemented the cake was HEAVENLY! The atmosphere of the place was really cosy, and you could people watch all day just sitting there! Would definitely return!

Single O has been roasting and brewing coffee for the past 18 years, and is no surprise they're the father of single origin coffee in Sydney. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. There is a large selection of beans to choose from, so there is bound to be something that you're palate will love. To keep you buzzing at home they also have subscriptions available on their website to have coffee sent regularly to your front door. They also make an incredible effort to clean and protect our environment so you can help save the world one coffee at a time.

A very popular cafe and always a bit of a wait. However, very friendly staff and very efficient service, the food came unexpectedly fast. The food was tasty but the serving is on the small side. The coffee was tasty but both our coffee were merely lukewarm. Thought of sending them back but today we were feeling chilled.

Very good coffee! Atmosphere was chill, and the servers were very friendly. We ordered the 'Fish Dawg' and the 'Beef Short Rib'. Both were very delicious. The fish roll was huge! The fish was super thick and cooked to perfection. But the beef short ribs was the winner for me. The beef brisket was super tender, and every component on the plate just makes sense. They complement each other perfectly. This is currently my favourite cafe in Sydney! They serve both really good coffee and food.

Nice brunch style cafe in Surrey Hills. Fish Dawg bun was super tasty, and the coffee is good. Wide selection of coffee (single origin of course). Plenty of seating outside spilled onto the road which gives a nice outdoor ambience. Service is efficient but it does get busy. Parking is not easy so don't come during the peak hours.

Great cafe located in Surry Hills. Nice range of all day menu items plus pastries. The granola bowl, curry and Portuguese tarts were all delicious. Coffee was well made and reasonably priced. Nice mix of indoor and outdoor dining, staff were all very friendly, and service was prompt despite it being quite busy.

After a few weeks of being out of the country this was my first stop after landing back in Sydney. We got in early (around 7am) and the quite empty cafe saw us seated in comfortable both and chair style seating. The calm didn’t last long as this place is popular. Patrons quickly filled the indoor seating and a constant flow of take away coffee orders filed past outside. The service is prompt and adequate. Our server was polite and friendly and we ordered a round of coffees and some breakfast fare. The coffee is on point. I forgot to order mine extra hot but for those who have their coffee at the regulation temperature you won’t be disappointed. Food is fresh and well prepared. I had the avi with lot and it was a really well thought out dish. And thank you for sliced avocado!! I am not a fan of the smashed variety and it was refreshing to see a common dish done with some flare and originality. The granola was really good with a variety of fruits and a really beautiful granola. Perfect! A great place to grab a bite in the heart of Sydney! Thanks!

The best coffee in town! Always consistent, never had a bad tasting coffee from here. That's why I love them. The granola is also equally as delicious, highly recommend the granola with oat milk 👌🏻

Absolutely excellent coffee shop and delicious food. I enjoyed the Avo Show with a poached egg and a latte. My husband got the coffee flight which he graciously shared with me and we enjoyed the natural filter coffee so much we bought a bag. The Avo Show was so unique - I've never had anything like it. Thick slices of avocado, pickled fennel, a generous dollop of cashew spread, topped with crispy delightful bits. The staff was excellent and chatted with us a bit.
