First time I went to Thai Pothong was back to 2002. Beautiful restaurant with gift shop impressed me by authenticity of the food, nice decorations, unique gifts and friendly staff. When I came to live in Sydney in 2018, I wanted to go back to see that nice restaurant again. I found it more beautiful then 2002. We’ve became regular customers here since 2018. Many staff know us and they are very nice with us. Recently we had my birthday dinner here. They gave me a gift with a lovely tea cup wrapped in special handmade paper and took photo of us, put in frame and sent digital pictures to us with birthday wishes. Such thoughtful gifts really made my day. Highly recommend this restaurant to all who love Thai food. I’m sure you will like it.

Gives a grand view of the decorative and gift pieces from the Thai culture. Restaurant is pretty big and gives a good time while enjoying the bright views. Service time for food is reasonable although prices are on significantly higher side with a great room for improvement in taste. The staff is welcoming and responsive.

This one came highly recommended, so we made a beeline for it on our first day in Sydney. We were quickly given a table with menus and water. We started with their Betel Leave prawns. The sweet chilli and lemon combined to give this a slightly spicy and tart taste. Next came the soft shell crab, the Barramundi in coconut curry and Pad Thai. Every dish had loads of flavour, pleasing textures and were generous in size. The food here was so good, no wonder there were so many people here. This place was enormous, with every corner filled with diners and Thai style decorations. Service was super efficient, necessary for the volume of people they cater for. We were so glad we checked this out, totally worth the trip.

My family and I came here for our New Year’s Eve dinner and we were definitely not disappointed! The food was so delicious, we ate everything we ordered and there was no leftovers because it was that tasty. I will 100% be returning here again and I would highly recommend trying out this restaurant. The service was fantastic and I especially loved walking around the gift shop as well.

Great Thai restaurant located in Newtown. The restaurant is big and they also have a downstairs area where it feels like you're in Thailand with a bar there. Their entrees are delicious and unique! Their main are also delicious but standard that you can find at other restaurants. They have a huge selection of cocktails! Their sticky rice mango cocktail is very unique and delicious! Definitely worth a try!

Favourite Thai cuisine in Australia. Atmosphere is great. Very friendly staff. Highly recommend the Coconut Seafood and Lychee Duck Curry. Hard to find parking but will worth it. 2min talking from Newtown Station so you can either bus it or train it.

This place has a fantastic atmosphere. We ordered a few entrees and mains. The highlight was the chicken satay and stuffed chicken wings. Although I’d probably get the main size for the Tom Yum next time as the entree size is literally just a small bowl. Overall a great experience and will definitely be back!

Can you guess the restaurant based on the two 2m transformers at the entrance? You wouldn’t guess this is the best Thai food in town, not only the authentic taste but the chic deco, super cleanliness and friendly service! They sometimes have lady boys roaming the two floors touching guys and birthday guests during dinner service🤣🤣 Highly recommended to anyone who never tried Thai or a Thai food lover!

OMG such tasty Thai! We got a few dishes and shared between us - each dish was delicious and each had its own unique taste. Especially impressive is the fish flambe which comes super flaming on its plate. Not only is it impressive but yummmm! We also got pork prik king and the sauce is incredible with just the right amount of spiciness. Staff are friendly and the never ending rice goes well with the dishes to help soak up the sauces.

This restaurant has a gluten free menu almost as long as the standard menu, and all delicious options. Really flavourful food, friendly service. Oh and if you want to celebrate a birthday, it’s the place to be with cake and a song!

Personal opinion, the food is not as great as all the good review and the vibe. But the service is incredible, one of the best Thai restaurant in the service part. Good and fast.

If you come to this restaurant it is best to make a booking so that you will not be disappointed. When you arrive there is one entrance for bookings and another entrance for non bookings. If you have a booking then will be shown to your table quickly, but if not booking might be waiting a while. This is a very good place to have a family gathering as the restaurant is very big and can hold plenty of people. The Food is delicious and filling and you won't be sorry if you come here. The staff are attentive and will bring your meal to you as quickly as possible. They do not rush you to have your meal and will wait till you are finished and will bring the next dish out when you are ready. After eating in the restaurant you can go to the gift shop and make a purchase and they have interesting things which can be purchased, such as a sculpture of the alien from Alien.

Us 4 mates always catch up here a few times a year, we won't go anywhere else. Service is always upbeat and wonderful. Food comes out surprisingly fast considering how many people are dining in. Above all else, the food is always perfect with rich flavours. The bbq pork dish is to die for!

For such a large resturant, they do an excellent job at making sure dishes and drinks come out in a timely manner. The entrees were a huge standout for us, each exploding with flavour. Given all the hype and great reviews, this place certainly didn't us down on our first visit! Grateful to have experienced one of the true gems Sydney has to offer.

This is now my favourite restaurant in Newtown! Am surprised how I missed it so many years. Thanks to my friends for taking me for my birthday weekend. The food is delicious, the service is great and inside is super quirky with all the Thai art around. The food is also really reasonably priced with good portion sizes. It's always busy in here so it's best to pre book ahead. They set up balloons on the table for my birthday. I also got a lovely gift from them for my birthday and they made it a special evening for all of us with all birthday songs and pictures . Highly recommended

We went here on Friday and it was a huge disappointment. Ordered the lamb massaman, pad se ew and calamari. The massaman curry was great but the lamb was either cooked for 6 days or we got mutton. It was tough and dry. The pad se ew noodles were really good but the beef was tough and chewy. The deep fry calamari was probably straight out of a bag from the freezer. I would not recommend going here. I hear the pothong in newtown is fantastic.

Restaurant ambiance is amazing, beautiful, big place, nice decorations makes your visit more welcoming. Place was busy when we arrived but our service was very quick during the night. For our wedding anniversary they decorated our table with balloons, gave us a complementary bottle of wine so we feel very welcome. Menu is incredible there are a lot of dishes and really good options. We ordered baby octopus as entree and two mains. Food arrived on time, very tasty, we enjoyed it a lot. Restaurant has a bar were you can order cocktails, we tried one and presentation and flavour was delicious. They gave us a yummy dessert. Great service, place, food everything in there is spot on. Hopefully we can visit you again and many thanks for creating good memories in this special date for us.

One of my favorite Thai restaurants. Service is always top notch and the food comes out quickly. Red Duck curry is highly recommended, it's not too spicy and soaks into the rice well. Price is reasonable it's better to go in groups if possible. Most diners come and go quickly to have a fast bite with quality food. Download their app to get 10% off, no hassles.

PLACE. Love the place. Can be very busy. We need to be in the queue for may be 20minutes just to get in. So it's ideal to book seats. FOOD. The food is divine. Just perfect! 😋 SERVICE. Quick service despite it was busy that night.

Had an amazing and authentic experience at this Thai restaurant as a visitor to Sydney and celebrating a birthday. They made sure we were looked after well and the service staff surprised us with a complimentary dessert and a rendition of happy birthday! The flavours were authentic and well balanced. The spice levels are as indicated and so a 3 chilli rating was definitely hot even to those used to eating hot food. Plenty of options to choose from and the vegetarian options were exhaustive. Great selection of cocktails as well! Had a great night and will definitely visit again, the next time we are in the area.

Loved the place and the ambience. We ordered the food on our way and got everything ready when we reached. The service was fast. Thai Fish Cake ($14.9) - 9 Chilli Hot Basil Chicken ($19.9) - 8 Chilli Hot Basil Barramundi ($23.9) - 7 Deep Fried Calamari ($14) - 5 Calamari could have been definitely better. I would repeat the fish cake and chicken again.

THE BEST THAI RESTAURANT EVER! An absolutely outstanding restaurant with the best service! Staff are incredibly helpful and efficient even when the place is full! When a restaurant is usually full to the brim you expect to wait a long time for your food, however we never wait long at all!!! The food is delicious and the prices are exceptionally reasonable for the quality! My partner is a vegan, and choosing restaurants is always a little bit of a challenge. When we discovered Thai Pothong it became an instant favourite not just for him but for the both of us!!! The vegetarian/vegan dishes are by far the tastiest I’ve ever tasted and I’ve struggled with meat replacement meals in majority of restaurants with regards to texture and overall taste. Our favourites are the chicken flavour satay scewers, vegetarian rice paper rolls and the red vegetarian duck curry!! But.. everything is amazing! I don’t think any other restaurant in Sydney or even Australia will beat this one! A little tip, book in advance!!! We’ve always booked as there are always queues for people who haven’t! Can’t wait to visit again soon!!!

I would not put this place as my top 10 best Thai restaurant in Sydney. Pros: Venue very spacious and beautifully decorated, huge variety of drinks and food menu, drinks look creative and taste good too (we were a group of 7and all loved our drinks), generous food portions and fair price, my husband appreciated the vast vegetarian options on the menu quick service, friendly staff and best of all was the complimentary big scoop of ice cream - taste amazing. Cons: We had a booking but even then we waited at the door for couple of minutes. I ordered a simple thai dish of beef Pad Thai and it was 70% tofu and 30% beef, the 'angel hair' spaghetti they used was barely cooked. The whole dish was insipid. Drinks had more ice than actually liquid. Overall ok place but I would only return for the drinks.

A little too pricy for just simple Thai food, you can find this stuff elsewhere. The only exception would be the slightly higher quality and good portion size. Excellent staff, the setting was a little unpleasant with all the decorations. Overall, a decent place with only a few things to nitpick. Will occasionally return to dine.

$15 for the smallest tom yum soup I've ever seen. The size of an average small rice bowl. A couple of prawns and mushroom. Very misleading! It was in the entree' section... and it is serving for one. You will also have no reception when you go inside the restaurant.

In what is probably the bigger or biggest restaurant in Newtown this place does not have any issues when it comes to social distancing. The food here is excellent and tastes exactly what you would come to expect from a Thai place in Sydney. The staff service is top notch and helpful, whether it's getting a knife or another order of spring rolls. It's pricier than other Thai places but some things are worth paying a bit more for, and this is fortunately one of those things. In my case, I didn't need to pay so I just focussed on eating!

Walk into a very busy restaurant which shows how much people love this place with people waiting to be seated (I suggest making a booking) At first was confusing been taken to the back then up to the front then to the back again but finally found our table of about 30pax of to the side in a private room! Staff are fabulous (Quick note GEM is an absolute Gem great service! Along with all the other team members) Food was delicious and if you like spicy food, I suggest get into it! Love a good cocktail or three 🍹🍸

  • 4/5 Erin L. 2 years ago on Google
Excellent customer service and quick service. The food isn’t quite as sour and spicy as Thai food normally is, most dishes, especially the curry, is quite sweet. It is recommended to make a booking as you may have to wait quite a while for a table if you don’t. The food was served very quickly but some of the food wasn’t hot, the BBQ octopus tasted as if it had been sitting on the plate for awhile and the red duck curry would have tasted better if the curry was slighter hotter (spice wise and temperature wise). The soft shell crab was refreshing and I would recommend it to anyone. The sizes are rather small for the price but the customer service and pleasant atmosphere makes up for it. Overall, a really pleasant experience and would return to try other dishes.

I am generally so blown away with this place. This was in one of my most anticipated restaurants and it has exceeded expectations. I went here for my friends 20th birthday with a party of 10 but he didn't mention it was his birthday on the booking. Despite that, birthday balloons were set up for the special moment and he was blown away as well. Thanks for making it so special for him. Also, thanks for the complimentary mint chocolates for everyone. And the complimentary ice cream cake for the birthday boy. The food was fantastic, it was hard to fault anything on the food. Everything was excellent on this restaurant and my favourites were the Pad See Yu, Scallops and Baby Octopus. I don't usually like Pad Thai but the Pad Thai in this restaurant is next level. The same thing goes for the Soft Shell Crab. I don't usually like Crab but this restaurant has done justice to that. The prawn fried rice and beef salad were a nice combo to have as well. The vibe on this restaurant feels very prestigious and it is humungous. It definitely feels like Sydney's best Thai restaurant. Food were quickly brought out and service was attentive. This restaurant has become one of my favourite restaurants ever and will definitely 100 percent return. PS: I would like this restaurant to keep the transformers at the entrance. It has become an iconic sight in Thai Pothong / Newtown and would be sort of ashame if it were sold off.

My husband and I have been to Thai Pothong multiple times. It's not only the fact that the food is incredible that I give this restaurant 5 stars. It's the atmosphere, the cocktails and drinks, the quick service and most importantly the amazing staff! This place ticks every box. There was nothing we could complain about if we tried. Despite being extremely busy on a Saturday night. We called for a table for 2 for 6:15pm. They only had 6pm available. We said we would try hard to make it but because of traffic, we got there at 6:10pm. Not a single look of disappointment from them. They smiled, greeted us and took us to the table. The waiters were so helpful, so friendly and the cocktails were beautiful! Despite us only having to table for 1 hour and 20 because of the next bookings. We did not feel rushed what so ever. To say we enjoyed our dinner here is an understatement. I'm convinced it is the best Thai food we have had anywhere! Including in Thailand. Don't wait. Try this place out the next time your in Sydney! And don't forget to book! Cause the secret is out, Thai Pathong Restaurant is incredible. We ordered: Entree: - Betel Leaf Prawns - Steamed Ginger Scollops Mains: - Panang Duck Curry - Coconut Rice - BBQ Pork Cocktails: - Dry Martini - The olive were amazing! - Singapore Slings

I visited here on my birthday, and the reservation table was decorated with balloons and the staff welcomed me. The service was enough, but the restaurant also prepared birthday gift for me, doubling the happiness. It's a little pricey for a Thai restaurant, but I was satisfied with the service and will visit again. The food was also good ofc!!

Been here twice and the food and service has been nothing short of amazing each time. The wait staff are all so friendly and attentive, frequently checking up on us and filling up our water and even scooping up rice for us! The food arrived very quickly despite how busy it was (within 10-15 minutes). We ordered the red duck curry and it is just such a beautifully presented dish. The duck is cooked so tenderly and the curry was packed with so many amazing spices. Love the pineapple and lychee in there as well, adding a lovely sweet taste to the dish. The Pad Thai was also incredible, sauce was perfect and not overly sweet, chicken cooked nicely and quite juicy. Even the juices were amazing! Had the watermelon juice and it was so fresh and creamy. The orange juice was so refreshing and freshly squeezed. They also take allergy requirements very seriously and also have a separate gluten free menu which includes a large variety of their most popular dishes.

We have been dining in a lot of Thai restaurants in the Inner West recently, and though the Newtown branch of Pothong was a delight the experience at the Marrickville arm was just underwhelming. It was all down to the food really - just not as fresh, aromatic or spicy as we would have liked, so the flavors fell a bit flat. BYO only too, so it definitely felt more like "dinner" than a dining occasion.

A very popular and highly rated Thai restaurant here in Sydney and also has also been voter as the best Thai restaurant in Sydney. I can say that this restaurant is fancy! It feels like entering a museum with all those fancy decorations. Service was very good and food was delicious as well. It is recommended to make a booking to eat here as this place will have long wait list for peak hours. Overall, great food, great service and great ambience!

Can get Authentic Thai food here, absolute perfect taste. Should try Whole fried fish. All the dishes we ordered were nice, flavoured and tasty. Good place to hangout for parties and other events. Restaurant ambience is good too. Staff is professional and friendly, as the restaurant is very busy it takes little longer to get the food on the table. Overall it’s a good place to enjoy Thai Food.

We came here for dinner last night (Saturday) and it was such an amazing Thai restaurant! The cocktails and drinks were amazing, the food was so beautiful, the ambience was really nice and the staff were extremely friendly. The only downside was we had to wait 15 minutes to get seating even though we had a 8:00 booking which was kind of understandable for a Saturday night. I would definitely come back again.

Hands down the best Thai restaurant in Sydney, it is no surprise they have won so many awards. The food is incredible, serving sizes are large and the staff are all lovely and very attentive. The place is always bustling with good energy, and they are always more than happy to cater for any special event you want to celebrate. Their vegan options are delicious also!

From arrival right through the meal the staff here are truly brilliant, helping with the menu and making you feel so welcome. The food itself might not be the cheapest but it’s all super tasty and presented well. The service of the food is really quick too. The decor is great throughout and it’s no surprise that it’s busy late into the night - one of the best Thai’s I’ve ever had!

Beautiful restaurant 😁 everything was so great from the atmosphere to the service. The food was absolutely delicious (see my images). I strongly recommend it to everyone, you can even walk in with a table of 10, so efficient operation.

Thai Pothong provided a fantastic experience for our celebration of my dad's birthday. The food was excellent and the team went above and beyond by helping us with the fish and even surprising us with free ice-cream and a birthday song. The staff was friendly and the ambiance was great. We received a small gift to commemorate the occasion and I especially enjoyed the sticky rice with mango dessert. Overall, a must-visit for good food, atmosphere, and service.

One of the best Vegan Thai restaurants in Newtown. The food was so delicious that we ended up over indulging :D. Portion size was generous too and the taste was very authentic. We loved the service, vibe and overall experience. It's one of the few 'close to fine dine' experiences in Newtown!

amazing amazing place! we managed to beat the dinner queue when we unknowingly arrived at 5.30pm on the dot, just when they reopened for dinner. the staff's service was absolutely delightful from start to end of the meal and though it's not the cheapest, the food was really yummy! the dishes packed a punch in terms of taste and i overall enjoyed my meal very much.

My favorite Thai restaurant in Sydney and I’ve been here more than 3 times! I've eaten at many Thai restaurants around Haymarket, in fact there's not much difference in price per person… but I wasn't as amazed as I was here. BTW, the waiters were all really lovely!

Big Thai Restaurant, seems famous for Birthday parties. Large Menu with a lot of options. Food has a good quality. Some nice cocktails. Service a bit slow but it was a very crowded evening. Needs reservation on weekends I think.

Eaten here many times but most recently late on a Saturday afternoon for lunch - table of 3 w BYO wine. Shared entrees and mains. Service was friendly and attentive and all dishes were really tasty. Menu is large so good to go as a group, share and taste more things.

Packed with flavour, very wide varity, everything we tried was impressive, the seafood flambe stood out. Service was very impressive. Staff really cared and always smiled. Prices were very reaosnable. Beautiful vibes and exceptional decore. Don't ask for chop sticks, a nice story behind that, worth looking up.

Always a bit sceptical when you look online and see "Sydney's Best (insert cuisine here) Restaurant". However, in @thaipothongrestaurant 's case in Newtown, they certainly have a good argument that they are. Absolutely aroy! (Delicious!) Lovely decor too. Definitely worth seeking out for exceptionally tasty Thai treats! Service was so friendly and made you feel very welcome. What a great place!

This is our go to Thai resto. Food has always been great! Tonight we tried for the first time the BBQ baby octopus and stir fry seafood and we enjoyed it. Highly recommend also: Fried Rice with Crab meat, Crispy basil pork, bethel prawn leaf and scallops fo entree.

We had a wonderful lunch in this beautiful Thai restaurant recently. The Thai food tasted delicious and looked so beautiful. It’s so great to sit in surrounded by beautiful decoration. The celebration of one of us’ birthday was unforgettable. The restaurant provided the celebrant with a complimentary ice cream desert, and a gift of tea cup. Some staff sang a birthday song with us together, one of the staff took some wonderful birthday celebration photos for us. It really made our day. We much appreciate for the excellent service and efforts that the restaurant provided. We will definitely visit again and highly recommend it to our friends and colleagues.
