I was really scared, because I’m just 31 and out of a sudden I had to make this huge decision of going through an urgent open heart surgery. After being advised by my cardiologist that Prof. Tristan is THE authority in Australia in this field and after reading amazing reviews about him, I finally had my consultation with Prof. Tristan. He’s very professional, calm and was very patient to explain in details all the thousand of questions that I had, which gave me the extra confidence to go ahead with the surgery. You can tell that he has a lot of experience and is a good-natured person, which I found it to be very reassuring. My recovery after the surgery at the Sydney Adventist Hospital was so fast that I couldn’t believe it. I received the best care from all the hospital staff and Professor Tristan’s team 💕 I’m writing this review 5 weeks after the surgery and I feel like my energy level is definitely back to my pre-surgery time. My post surgery scar is looking very small, thanks to Prof. Yan’s minimally invasive technique, and I can tell day by day that it’s blending in quickly. I just wanted to write a personal review that tells everyone exactly how I feel about Dr Tristan Yan's capabilities and manor throughout my experience of heart failure and surgical treatment. If it wasn't for Dr. Yan, I guess I wouldn't be writing this review. I had a difficult process to go through in ICU before surgery and was guided by Dr. Yan's advice and recommendations in relation to when I was medically fit for surgery - timing was everything and I felt confident that I was in the best hands. Surgery went extremely well and I have been recovering at a blistering rate to the astonishment of my cardiologist. I couldn't give Dr. Tristan Yan a rating less than excellent and would recommend him to anyone of my family and friends as a thoracic surgeon.

Professor Yan is the most amazing cardio thoracic surgeon in Australia! 12 months ago I presented at RPA with symptoms that I thought were Gall Stones. Three hrs later I was having life saving surgery to repair a dissected Aorta. Professor Yan's world wide expertise and care saved my life, no doubt about it! Just before Xmas I received some devastating news when a CT scan found a lesion in my lung. I, like so many others before me, will be forever grateful to the brilliance of Professor Yan. He’s calm demeanour, amazing knowledge and with a team of experts behind him, gave me the strength and confidence to opt for minimal invasive robotic surgery. As I was being wheeled into surgery at the SAH, scared and anxious, the nurses told me to “relax, you are in the best hands possible”. This is the doctor (they said) would be their choice if they needed an operation. The operation went smoothly, pain for me was minimal, healing was quick and 2 months later I am almost fully recovered. Whilst bad news is devastating, if you are lucky enough to be referred to Professor Yan, know that you will be in skilled and safe hands. I cannot thank Professor Yan and his team enough.

Professor Tristan Yan saved my life. He performed an extremely difficult surgery for me. Nearly 2 years ago i was diagnosed with malignant mediastinum germ cell tumour. A cancerous tumour growing at a fast rate in my mediastinum area. Even after going through chemotherapy the tumour was still the size of a mango. It was very difficult to breathe at night so i hardly can get any sleep due to the large tumour compressing my left lung and was also next to my heart. I was referred to go see Professor Tristan Yan because the surgeons at the hospital wouldn't operate on me due to the complexity. Thank God i went because now i am still alive. When i first met Professor Tristan Yan he looked very calm and trusting. When he speaks you can tell he has vast knowledge of his profession and you know that he knew what he was talking about. I felt that i would be in safe hands. He has confidence and an amazing arsenal of surgery skills shown in the videos on YouTube of him operating on people. In the later part of 2021 Paul had a PET scan to test for prostate cancer and discovered that he also had lung cancer unrelated to the prostate, as you can imagine we were very upset and scared. We were referred to Prof Yan who after reviewing the PET scan was confident that we could do keyhole surgery, this was a big relief for us because Paul has many underlying health issues. Prof Tristan Yan - Our Thoughts. 11th Oct 2022 When we first met Tristan Yan, we were in the position of clutching at straws after having elsewhere had diagnosis, standard surgery for mesothelioma and then been given a dire and short prognosis within the space of a year. Luckily, we didn’t like that process and it triggered a reaction so with the help of a brave young registrar we got a referral to Lifehouse. Paul had a lungful of fluid and could hardly breathe when we walked in to Lifehouse and we weren’t expecting much but we weren’t ready to give up yet. Perhaps this was what Tristan recognized in us - and what we saw in him was his passion to do more than be at the top of his surgery game. He didn’t at any time give us false hope and was completely honest about the potential outcome but he looked at Paul’s records and believed he could help. And this is what he did. He told us what he could do which gave us more time and he encouraged us to participate in the process by always being open to any questions and indeed never being phased by our challenging anything which we felt was detrimental to Paul’s survival. We know and he knows that everyone is different and has different potential to fight and sometimes the fight for life is not worth the quality of that life. We have always felt that Tristan is engaged in our treatment (I accidentally said “our” treatment and I’ve left it there because I feel just as looked after as Paul ) Tristan communicates as a human being not just a highly praised surgeon who excels at his technical skill. This is what has always given us hope and desire to keep looking for ways to deal with the challenges which come up. He has a superb team around him who take on the same characteristics of their leader. There’s no gate-keeper who prevents contact when our desperation takes over. They have the same compassion as he does and this is so rare. Many thanks to Belinda, Andrea, Luiza and Clare. We are now reaching 5 years of a meso life together that we were told we wouldn’t have. We have dealt with 5 thoracic surgeons and many other specialists as well as hospital staff. Tristan continues to look outside the square for answers to complex questions and finds those answers to our grateful relief. Prof Yan is a rare beast in this medical system and if there was more of this kind of humanity shown to patients we have no doubt there would be better care, less need for the money and staff who are run off their feet – as he is, it seems – and an easier ride to either better health or a better death.

I was operated on in August this year by Professor Yan for an Aortic Aneurism, a lengthy and complicated surgery. This was key hole surgery and I was left with a tiny 5cm scar on my sternum. Post-Surgery for me was absolutely painless, no painkillers were ever needed and it was such a short time before I was walking , doing regular Physio and making light meals for myself all this due to the amazing skills of professor Yan. I cannot thank Professor Yan enough for saving my life and also being a man who is so warm, caring and compassionate, such an important part of my healing process. Professor Yan visited me in hospital on a few accessions and was happy to share any information I asked about. He also showed me scans and photos as I was interested in finding out about my procedure. He always talked to me not at me making me feel part of the team not just the soon to be forgotten patient. Whilst in ICU Professor Yan took the time to make regular calls to my daughter advising her of my current status. My daughter could not be there and was overwhelmed by these unexpected and greatly appreciated phone calls. Professor Yan has a dedicated medical team of 15 in theatre, Andrea his nurse who supplied me with invaluable information pre surgery and follow up visits in hospital, Luiza and Gosia who assisted me with paperwork for my admittance and my amazing cardiologist Dr Dennis Wang. I was referred to him by my cardiologist Sean Lal at RPA because I was born with a moderate prolapse of the mitral valve that got a little worst in the last few years.
